Saw this place before they opened a few weeks back and was in the area for lunch and was just excited to give them a try. Party of 2.5 my husband and I was greeted as we entered. This resturant had an open large dining area with plenty of seating. It was open, spacious and clean. With beautiful interior design. There was also a bar to the left of the entrance. We were seated given a menu and our server came and greeted us right away. Took our drink orders and gave us time to look over the menu. We came right on time for their lunch special (Mon-Fri 11am-3pm). We ordered from their boiling lunch 3/4 lbs shrimp and 3/4 lbs of green mussels captain special mild, one fried oyster basket, one catfish basket and once chicken tender basket which all came with fries and we ordered one of each; regular, sweet potatoes and Cajun. Our orders came out fast and it was all fresh and hot. The seafood boil was delicious and came with 2 potatoes and 2 corns. Seafood tasted fresh and the captain special seasoning was very good the corn was sweet and the potatoes cooked perfectly. I've never had fried oysters and it was actually really good. Nice crunch to all of our fried food. The chicken was tender. The fries were all perfectly fried. The sweet potatoes waffle fries were my favorite one of the best I've ever had love the crunchiness goodness of the outside and how the potato just melted with each bite. They also provided us with a variety of sauces for our fried food baskets. Overall we had a great experience. The food was good and very affordable our server was very attentive and nice. We were seated close to the entry which made it was very cold. After that, it was a pretty disappointing experience. We waited 22 minutes for our starter: 2 bowls of clam chowder. Guests around us were getting their food, even those that were seated after us. After finishing our chowders, we waited another 12 minutes for our entree: an 8-piece fried shrimp plate with fries and cole slaw. Never received our cole slaw. Chowder and shrimp was just okay. FINALLY. I've been waiting for a seafood boil restaurant to open up in Clovis. I came here for my birthday dinner for two about a week ago. We were seated quickly and got our food rather quickly as well. Interior fit the theme and plenty of seating inside. We came around 5pm and it filled up by the time we were eating. Located at Sierra Vista mall amongst some other shops, so it makes for nice evening outing in Clovis. Everything was as expected, they even include corn and potatoes in your bags. We ordered the Dungeness crab w garlic butter and shrimp w captain's special medium. I personally like the creole flavors so I would recommend. They also give you gloves which I've been to a couple other seafood boil locations where they don't, so I was pretty happy about that. I did bring my own in case which I ended up using anyway since they were tighter. The oysters were ok but I do appreciate them being separated from the shell ahead of time. I had the boil with crab and husband had the fried shrimp basket. We also ordered fried mushrooms that was our only little issue. They came out after our dinners. This is my second choice for a seafood boil in the 559 area, the flavor is good and the spice level gets pretty spicy, it has a good kick to it. I like that they have combo deals and they do holiday specials sometimes, I only know of Mother's Day and Father's Day special, not sure if they do any other holiday. I usually go with a friend and we always get the family deal with the captain's special, flaming hot, it's enough for us 2 or sometimes 3 and we usually finish the whole thing, depending on how hungry we are lol! The hush puppies are good and addicting. We get the oysters cooked in the captain's sauce as well, sooo good, I believe it's broiled. Service is friendly and pretty attentive but there have been times where they aren't that busy and the waiter/waitress takes a while to check on us. This is also a very spacious spot so if you wanted to go in a large group they will be able to serve you. It has the same feel as most seafood boil spots with fishing nets, crab and such for decoration. I haven't been back in a while though because the last time we went it was pretty salty which has never happened before. So not sure if they got a new cook. Unfortunately, we've not been able to try the fare to see how it measures up. Upon arriving, after a brief wait, we were seated and provided menus including specials. Out server, Mitchel was quick to arrive and offer drinks or appetizers - we asked for a moment to look over the menu. Neither the hostess nor our server mentioned menu items that were unavailable and, despite the menu having prices and notes updated with grease pen, upon asking for one of the seasonal specials, were advised it was unavailable. It was priced at $47.99 for one pound of blue crab plus two pounds of additional seafood/sausage. We were directed to the closest other 3# option (since we were looking at sharing for two) but that option was significantly pricier - $65, or the $34.98 option which was half the amount of food. We asked for the manager and explained that we'd like to have a compromise as it was not appropriate to not explain to customers upon seating that an item was not available. I also explained that the hostess could have indicated, the waiter could have indicated and the restaurant could have easily placed an "X" through the menu item (those grease pens work just as well for prices as marking an item) His reply was to repeatedly indicated "but its seasonal and we don't have it" Then his suggestion was to order individual items (no crab at all, shrimp/clams/sausage would be cheaper than the $47 bundle) rather than coming up with a solution. According to both the waiter and manager "there's not a way to change the combos in the system" I feel like this place does a bait and switch - off items not on the menu for a "good deal" them not have it so they can convince you to spend more. We offered to pay for our soft drinks (which the manager did waive) and we left. It's a shame that we didn't even have a chance to expand our date night options but Captain Crab needs to reevaluate how they serve their customers and how they address menu updates to present an experience that will value patrons. We won't be back. FYI - Blue Crab season is year round in CA, April thru October in the Gulf Coast and April-December on the East Coast so their "explanation" is extra suss read more
