Wow, this place is a hidden gem. Right in Capitola by Nob Hill, it is the cleanest and nicest storage facility I've ever seen. Everything is very organized and secure, and they have handcarts and up-close parking right by the elevator (I had an upper unit, and found it was just as easy to get to as the downstairs ones). The owner even stayed over a couple of minutes to sign me up for a unit when I arrived in town much later than expected (there's always an accident on highway 17 when you have an appointment, right?). I loved the local history pictures on all the walls, too. And the rock-n-roll piped in kept it from feeling spooky after hours, like most storage places tend to. If you can snag a unit here, go for it. read more

This is my first Yelp review, I've never been so inspired to leave one. I had also never used self-storage before. I did my Yelp research, called for quotes, and chose this place (we're in the Santa Cruz area, we're willing to drive but not over the mountains). First thing to mention: incredible service. Honest, direct, told me what questions to ask about the competitors, helpful, gave us a free lock, etc. Other Pros - Clean, well-lit, secure facility (felt a little like home...) - Great range of products - Competitive price on all ranges of product - Eco-friendly - Locally owned!! The other place that compared on paper was Store More America in capitola. They're a chain, not locally owned, and I can't imagine that they would beat Capitola Self-storage in any way. read more

I always hate leaving a less than stellar review.... but, here goes. You enter this place at your own risk. When I came in I found it very clean, open, well lit and just a really neat place. They even have some beautiful artwork on the walls. The aisles are named after local places which makes it super cool too. I spoke to a tall curly blond haired lady with a super bubbly personality. She explained all my storage options and the rates as well as specials and perks. Like if you refer someone you get a free month. I ended up referring lots of people. I got 1 month off I am positive. I did secure a unit btw ... and everything was super. Easy peazy! I think came in after more than a month and paid my bill. The lady was a bit quieter this time and seemed less animated and happy? Almost depressed. I am not sure when I did try to pay next, but I came in to set up a new auto pay and the lady (Same one) was super short with me, snapped at me and combative. All I wanted to do was take care of my end .. not get treated terrible. She raised her voice a lot and as stressful as that was I also was dealing with some major health issues. I could not deal with her mood swing this day and walked out. I neglected to follow up after my last experience. Then I call and make arrangements to pay my bill and see about auto pay or close out storage. Its been well over 6 months and I no longer needed storage. I owed at this time for 3 months. With the late fees and charges, I knew it would be a bit high, but I had money and just wanted this stressful event over with. My jobs are often in sales, so I really know customer service and how to talk to people. I figured I would use my sales experience to maybe calm this down since it felt like a personal thing and not a business thing. I began emailing the manager which is a man.I wanted to know my bill since it had been a while. He helped me know what my options were etc. I went in with money in hand and my bank cards. This next visit would prove to be a total nightmare. The lady (same tall older blonde lady with curly hair) was there and she seemed bent toward me. To the point where she was screaming at me about how much money that people owed them, and showed me a long list of debted accounts. I was really put off by sharing private information and by her shoving paperwork in my face. She then went over my correspondence with the manager and how she knew everything I had said. As if it had anything in it that was offensive or ? It made no sense. I had fully intended to pay, came in apologetic for being irresponsible on my end. I know I avoid potentially stressful interactions and didnt know there was anyone else to talk to previous but she was so mean. She was the only one I had been dealing with and she was now acting totally irrational. She screamed at me in such a way that it made me feel totally unsafe.(She is really tall and I am barely 5 foot.) She yelled at me much worse than the previous time and then refused to take payment. She was losing her marbles and terrified my daughter. So sad to see this happening this way. I had never expected this type of thing to happen in a million years. The lady was soooo different from our first interactions. I left distraught and in tears. Didnt even get to pay as she was not interested in me squaring up my account but in being a tyrant and punishing me for being a burden. I requested to only deal with the manager, a nice calm professional man. As I began emailing him and so on about what to do and I ended up paying for my account in full and emptied it out with in a day to be done with the place. I believe I was emptied out the first week of December 2014. I was not going to leave a bad review but I felt so much stress and emotional strain from how horribly I was treated. In our correspondence (The male manager and myself) I learned the lady in the office is bipolar and was having some issues. I felt terrible for her situation. However, she abused me. She flew off the handle in such a dramatic way and with other renters there, I was not just embarassed I was so shook up I was throwing up for days. I thought I had the flu but I know it was my nerves were shot. Anyways, I give 2 stars for the managers efforts. And for him being so kind. But this was one of the single worst experiences with a business I have ever had. I review honestly as I think its good to support local. But people should know what they are getting into. I have dealt with many illness's and lots of anxiety and depression that was brought on by mentally abusive people. I pray for the lady, but she took out on me her turmoil. The manager knew there were issues and he still left her working alone knowing she was not stable. He even said the owner might want to talk to me. I left this situation feeling it was not fully resolved. The owner never contacted me and I know they record the office. I hope she finds peace. read more

When I sold my house in Capitola I moved my belongings into Capitola Self Storage. That was ten years ago. They have always treated me in a friendly and professional manner. The bathrooms are impeccably clean. I feel comfortable knowing that my valued possessions are safe in humidity controlled units that are under constant surveillance. They have a good selection of supplies for purchase and equipment which is available for use free of charge. They also offer U-Haul services in the form of truck rental which is extremely convenient. To be honest one star is too generous. My friend/boss and i were treated horribly when trying to rent a unit for a few personal items and also inquiring about the types of units that might work for a business he is thinking about opening in the area . After being shown a small unit and told the price, my friend was asking many questions such as "are the hours here more flexible for business owners needing access (in case he decided to store inventory there too)". Caprice,the senior employer,was giving us all of the information and the many strict rules of the facility. My boss is Mexican, here doing business and was told what types of ID he will need to rent; he showed her his passport. Before we left he was asked several times if he wanted to hold unit and was offered a copy of the lease to look over; he declined. We then walked to the Peets coffee next door. He needed me to clarify a few things for him because of the language barrier and Caprice was speaking fast. Less than 15 minutes later we decided that we will use this facility only for bicycles and a few personal items, not business. I walked back to rent it for us in my name, i was treated coldly by Caprice and told this facility is not a good fit for us and we will need to go elsewhere. I explained this was not for business,only bikes ect. She refused to rent to me because " his items will be in there too". And she kept repeating "this in not a good fit for you". She also refused to call the manager when i requested it. I pointed out that MOST units have items stored for more than one person (a mother/daughter came in to share a unit while i was in there). Caprice refused to rent to me because i was sharing the space with Miguel. After i accused her of discrimination she called the police (even though i was calm), because she said i " refused to leave". 1) If they did not want to rent to Miguel and I why did she still offer to put unit on hold for Miguel and offer copy of the lease just a short time earlier?? 2)If they require both of us on the lease why not make that clear? When I called Josh the manager to complain he backed his employee and said " we have the right to refuse service, we don't want your business". CAPITOLA SELF STORAGE DISCRIMINATES. Why would they refuse us, because my friend is from Mexico? Because he is sometimes hard to understand because of his accent?? I hope those who read this decide to take their business elsewhere. We cannot support ANYONE being singled out and discriminated against for ANY reason. Please don't support racist views. read more

Capitola Self-Storage is the paradise of storage places. It's clean, well-lit, indoors, secure -- and the staff/owners are very nice. I think the rates are reasonable, too. After reading reviews of other places -- complaints of rodents, bugs, water, mold, etc. etc., I was thrilled to find Capitola Self-Storage. I just recently rented a storage locker with this company and they are really amazing. Even the movers today couldn't get over how clean, neat and basically wonderful the environment there is. It is actually really fun to go there!! Sounds crazy, I know. The staff are great, the prices are phenomenally low compared to San Jose, etc...and they have a very advanced security system. In addition, a local museum displays lots of old, historic photos of this area which are hung in various parts of the storage facility. Really! You have to see it to believe it. I have had things in storage 8 times in the past 20 years and no place compares to this...on all levels...cleanliness, security, helpful staff. Really a great place to store your stuff. read more

I had a small unit here for approximately two months while staging to sell my home. It's a very clean, well maintained storage facility. All the units are located indoors which is great. The staff is friendly and helpful. When I first put my lock on I had accidentally locked it open and they called me that evening to let me know. Cost is a little on the high end but well worth it. Chris is Fantastic! She is so helpful and friendly and remembers me when I come in. She goes way, WAY out of her way to be accommodating. She stayed over one night when I was having trouble with my lock...even though I know she had her family waiting for her; beyond GREAT service! I can't thank her enough! I've been using dim and dingy Santa Cruz storage units for so long, I didn't realize that good places actually existed. This is by far the nicest storage facility that I have ever used. I've only dealt with the office staff once, but they were pleasant as can be. The interior is brightly lit, solidly built, and thoroughly clean. The lobby area doubles as a small history museum for Capitola. How cool is that? For those who care about more practical concerns, they have lots of carts, their units are individually alarmed, and the restrooms are fresh and clean (perhaps because they require your access code to get in). If you're lucky, you might catch the smell of baked bread wafting through the vents from the supermarket next door. It's pricey, but that's par for the course in Santa Cruz. This is the first self storage company where I've felt like they're actually giving me some value for the money, as opposed to just jacking the prices because they can. read more
