First of all, I want to give a huge shout-out to the property manager who handled a tough situation with poise and professionalism. I walked into the front office and some guy was absolutely out of control! I get having a complaint or whatever the issue was but yeesh! Place is ridiculous! I was specifically told on the phone when I signed up my rate would stay the same. 3 months later I get a notice in the mail saying my next month payment will go up 50$. That's 25% of what I am paying! Madness!! I called and spoke to someone on the phone. They were nice and helpful but he said the rates go up when the market does. He said corporate this corporate that. We don't set the rates. Then he said let me apply to keep the same rate for you. A few seconds later he said you've automatically been approved. He said it will eventually go back up. I asked how long he said he didn't know. After haggling him he said let me do some digging and said in another 3 months it will go up like what???? It's already expensive as it is!! He said you were prob told by someone at the call center that your rent won't go up but that's not the deal. Straight false advertising I'm pissed! I then asked oh if the prices move with the market do you ever drop them? He said unfortunately not. We get asked that question all the time and we have a lot of upset customers I apologize. Likeeeee you think????? Such a scam!! Do yourself a favor go somewhere else!! read more

I have used a few dozen storage facilities in the past thirty or forty years, and I must say this is the best one so far. It's so customer friendly; with huge hand carts for your convenience, and loading zone parking right in front, with direct access to a hugh 12' x 12' or possibly larger elevator. Corin the property manager; was very professional, friendly and the easiest person to talk to. She is a tremendous asset to this company; and I would highly recommend anyone using this facility. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars was the hours of operation. They should try extending their hours to 7 or 8pm. It's difficult if you work until 5pm and then have to try and get there and then load or unload and be out by 6pm. On weekends they close even earlier at 5pm. Just something to think about most people work until 5pm, and since I work the graveyard shift its even more difficult. Thanks again Corin your an A+ and will recommend to my many friends. read more

this place used to be good. But over the past year they have decreased access hour significantly (you cannot get into your unit after 6 on weekdays or after 5 on weekends), while also increasing rents significantly. So asking for more money for decreased access. I have scheduled a moveout date for the end of december because of the lack of customer service. read more

As far as customer service. I didn't have a clue how to go online to lease the storage space! The extremely personable, kind young lady was completely generous with me, while helping others, assisting me until the end. She was amazing! Corin is her name at the Portola site. Don't rent from here unless you want black mold on your stuff. I rented here a year ago and when I moved out, my stuff all had black mold on it. The company refused to take responsibility. It made me sick when I was trying to move out. I let them know and the office didn't care. My husband had to rent a space about 5 months ago. It was again on the EAST SIDE FIRST FLOOR of the facility (in the back). He said he didn't want the space because of the black mold issue. They said they fixed it. We are moving out now and WRONG - IT IS NOT FIXED. Again our first level boxes have mold on it (the ones that touch the ground). They have a drainage problem and apparently the water soaks into the storage facility. DO NOT RENT HERE UNLESS YOU LIKE MOLD ON YOUR BELONGINGS. I am not bothering to call the facility and let them know because they lied and said they fixed the problem. I'm calling Hazmat instead. read more

I had a great experience this last week renting a storage unit from this location. I was helped by Corin and Yesenia (sorry if I spelled that wrong!). Yesenia walked me around the property to let me look at different options before making my choice. She was extremely patient, flexible and helpful and showed me three options to choose from. Once signing me up in the office She and Corin we're both extremely patient And helpful as she answered my many questions in detailed. The unit and property itself is clean and very well protected. Corin is an excellent manager who actually waited until I showed up today. She has always been professional and has solved any problems I have had. I have rented many storage units for various reasons and this experience has been the best. Convenient, Fantastic Customer Service, a little pricey but worth it. Corin, the store manager, did a great job throughout the process of leasing and setup phases. I haven't needed to re-access my stuff yet but I love that I can when I need to. I especially appreciated that they sent emails to remind me that my reservation was ready and Corin called to make sure that she would there to meet me and go over the facility, she sure knows her stuff! It worked well for me to be able to communicate directly with the facility team on the day of and to see reminder emails the day before. Corin seems to have a great eye on the premises and I feel comfortable leaving my stuff at her location. The security features are great, the location seems very safe and well managed. A well maintained storage facility, dollies are readily accessible, and on site managers are very helpful. This is not "one of those facilities" where the office is closed or on break for 20 minutes after being open for only 90 minutes and then closed again for break. The bathrooms are extremely clean and are accessible during office hours. And nobody taking their afternoon naps in the hallways. Call and ask your questions. read more

I had a decent experience renting a unit from this location, though it wasn't perfect. Pros: Locked gate with keycode access, long access hours, friendly office staff, sturdy construction, easy-to-understand layout with no weird sizes/shapes as far as I know (some other storage places in town have trapezoidal units or units with slanted roofs that greatly affect your usable storage space), 1st month free promo deal Cons: Only two carts and they're under lock and key. If you don't need a cart to lug your stuff from the car to the unit, that's fine, but if you do, it limits you to the hours when the office staff is there to unlock the cart. In other words, if you're thinking of moving stuff at night after work, you need to get there before the office closes. Other storage places I have rented from had more carts and didn't lock them up. I can understand that you don't want to lose them to thieves, but with a coded gate and TV cameras, wouldn't it be rather easy to see exactly who stole them? This might not be so bad, but every time I was there (usually weekends), the janitor would be using one of the carts to haul his cleaning supplies around., leaving them with only one available cart. They need to get the janitor a supply cart and tell him to stop using the customer one. Note: It was over one year ago that I rented from them, so things may have changed. read more

This is the most awful storage rental facility I've encountered and I've been using self storage for many years in many cities. They lure you in with a free month rent but what they don't say is that there is an automatic rent increase at 3 months of 25%. This was done without any written or verbal notice. Also the manager acts like she's the daughter of Stalin and Hitler!!! Take some friendly advice and go elsewhere. A locally owned business that cares about its customers feedback would be more deserving of your business. If you want a headache then by all means they will give you one at public storage on Portola in Santa Cruz. read more

This place is very clean and professional. The service I received from the manager, Erica, was excellent! She is kind, caring and friendly. A few days into renting I was organizing my space when I heard a friendly voice say "Hi, Taylor. How is the space working for you?" In my opinion, Public Storage policy and management (i.e. 3840 Portola Dr Santa Cruz) is luring ($1 for the first month) and greedy ($130 to $158 for 5-10-8 for the subsequent months)! They do their best to find ways to charge you for every small services they implicitly push you to buy: mandatory rent increase every six months (even if their offered monthly rent for the new customers has dropped considerably), mandatory purchase of monthly insurance and its increase after a few months, special lock, etc.---with no lights provided inside the units. My advice: AVOID PUBLIC STORAGE---when there are several other storages around (as in my case in Santa Cruz) offering far better prices, much better services, and much superior care and respect for customers.
