I have been using Extra Space Storage for about 4 months now and Brittany, the manager in charge of their facility, is super friendly and helpful. It was a very easy process to get the exact square footage that I needed and they helped me figure that out by the type of equipment and furniture that I was was going to put into storage. They also provided me with the amount of insurance that I wanted. Their indoor storage units are temperature controlled with easy access so that you can drive up to their elevators and use their big carts for loading and unloading heavy items. Today started with a phone call from Hannah Huss saying that I was "caught dumping" at the facility last night and would be fined $75.00. I explained this was outrageous, asked to see security footage, and had to drive there to confirm the fact that I was not the bald man in the Chevy Excursion dumping trash. Two years ago I rented a unit. For the third year the price is $1000 more than the first year, which is outrageous. Especially since they erred on the accounting when I decided to give up my unit. It took all day for accounting to straighten out. Often the office is locked (with no apparent reason) when help is needed. It has become less clean, with junk outside the building. I found the manager on site difficult to communicate with every time. I would never use them again. read more

I've had a dramatic relationship with Extra Space Storage in Santa Cruz which is a unusual for something as simple as a storage unit. I was blamed for breaking their elevator because I knocked the side of it with a cart (as the door closed too fast). The woman who manages the place pointed out that it was caught on camera, but oddly didn't offer to provide me the footage or show me the proof. I have been in thousands of elevators and they are made of steel, and don't break if you accidentally bump them with the side with a cart - maybe with a sledge hammer but this was just a bump. The elevator worked the next time I was there, and then did not the following time. Jeez, I just checked and their elevator inspection certificates are expired. I took the photo on 12/20/21. The women who manages it was accusatory and doesn't seem to understand how elevators actually work. You can't break them by getting caught in the door otherwise none would work. I returned again months later and the elevator didn't work again. I had to carry all my stuff down a flight of stairs. I'm sure it was me that broke it from 3,000 miles away that time too. They doubled my rent effective January 1st which they will probably do to you. There is no ordinance with the City of SC or the state of California that prevents this. I would strongly encourage you to find another storage facility and not give them the business - they are predatory. And if you are there, move before they prey on you. I will be sending letters to corporate headquarters, the federal trade commission, and many other agencies highlighting their anti-consumer predatory practices. I thought payday loan companies were bad but this takes the cake. Plus, it's one of the most profitable businesses out there per square foot. Now I know why. Look elsewhere and I wish you good luck. Horrible, horrible place of business. They lure you in with a cheap rate then they gouge you with a super high rate. They are then unwilling to adjust to market rates. BUYER BEWARE!!!! This is not a place you want to do business with. Also, why I gave them a horrible rating is that when we went to move in the gates were broken and unmanned. You could not get in at all. We had a full Uhaul that we had to keep an extra night and pay for a hotel since we had no other option but to wait for them to do the repair. The offered no reimbursement for the extra expenses. I do not recommend them! And yes, I tried talking to them... no willingness to budge on anything. read more

After talking to Hannah (site manager) and her associates a few times on the phone, inquiring about donating the smallest space available to store items donated to me so I could drive them up to the evacuees at the Northern California fire site in Chico- she kindly agreed to "donate" (which meant give me a "month free" which is their ongoing deal, and waiving the $27.00 activation fee) the smallest storage unit they had available for me to store the ongoing donations I'm receiving (and storing in my SUV bc I have nowhere to put them!!). After I was unable to make the initial appointment (bc I took a friend to the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto last min for SURGERY, when her ride fell through), I spoke with her again and set it up for this morning (12/6) at 10. I showed up to the one by my house unaware that there were 4 in Santa Cruz bc she did not inform me that there were others even after I had mentioned DURING OUR CONVERSATION, that I was happy to have the facility so close to my house on 30th. I called Hannah to let her know that I went to my appointment but, it was the wrong facility. She was extremely rude and stated that after I had "missed two appointments", and with the feeling they are getting about me they no longer wish to "donate" the unit to me". First, I didn't miss TWO appointments. I'll give you the first one but, I was there for the 2nd. And I felt bad because I am 41, and don't "miss" appointments. But I figured taking a friend to the VA was a little more important. But, I guess that's just me. Well Hannah, unfortunately, the unit isn't for ME. It's to help as many of the families as possible, that desperately NEED supplies to get back on their feet after a wildfire destroyed everything they held near and dear, and spent their whole lives acquiring; and the families here in our small, non-corporate community are gathering, to HELP them. Sadly, you won't be a part of that process because it seems as though, your ego got in the way of that community outreach partnership. I will find a smaller company to help us do this. Thank you anyhow. To those seeking a storage facility: I highly suggest that you take your business elsewhere and refuse to support a company that is more worried about "the kind of person you are", then what you are doing out of the goodness of your heart for other humans. The location is conveniently just off of Highway 1 at the Soquel intersection, making it a not brainer to swing by as I go over the hill or come back from over the hill. Prices are good when compared to other storage locations on this side of the hill. We stored our furniture there for almost a year. It was clean, very accessible, and the staff was friendly. They did raise the price three times while we were customers though. My pet peeve with them now is we still live nearby. It is on our way home from working in San Jose and it is impossible to get there before 5:00. The sign says they are open until 5:30. Yelp says 6:00. We have arrived at 5:15ish several times now and there are cars out front but never anyone in the office. What's up with that?? read more

Within less than 24 hours Brian had responded to my inquiry, called me back and I was ready, set go! He was super helpful with getting additional supplies. I had a wonderful experience with Extra Space storage on 2900 Soquel Ave. At a time when there were very few spaces available the manager (Dapring) went out of her way to help me find the correct size for my items, taking the time to clarify what spaces might be available in the near future etc. She always had good suggestions for moving items and hauling services as well. Big Plus - Super nice & helpful people on site during regular business hours. Bathroom available during regular business hours as well. The second floor units seasonally can get very warm or cold. They are less expensive than first floor units which maintain a more even temperature. For several days the strong odor from dead rats made it difficult to spend any time in the unit. This was the only time in the one year we have used the unit. I was told that the rats were drawn to something in a unit and the unit can only be opened by the renter or with permission of the renter. In this case the renter was difficult to reach. I have been told that increased efforts are in place to mitigate the rat problem and it would of great help if the access doors to the building were not blocked open. The gates have no way to be opened during a power failure. Even during regular business hours the personnel report they have no way of manually opening the gate. This has been inconvenient as several times have been blocked from exiting until power restored. What would happen if a person had need of medical attention and was trapped behind the inoperative gate? The local personnel passed on my concern to the management. I never heard back from them. My rating would be 3 stars if the gate problem was fixed. read more

Michael at this location is great! He was helpful and showed me more than one unit so I could be sure that all of my belongings would fit in the right storage unit. I got the perfect space for my stuff and even though I didn't plan on it, ended up moving my things in after 9:00 pm and couldn't figure out the light, Michael came out and showed me how it works. I feel like my things are very safe at this facility and I trust that Michael is the best on-site manager in the area. Trust me I did my research and drove around and talked to people. I will not store my belongings at Extra space again. I chose them for the easy of access with with the drive way for the trailer I was pulling. The actual stay was fine but upon move out I found out I would not receive a refund for the last week and a half. Other places I have rented from I received a refund for any unused portion of the stay. When I called I was told that it was in the rental agreement. It stated in there in a way that is hard to understand as it talks about prepaying for the month, of which you do but you have to tell them before you pay for the month when your move out day is for a prorated rate, which is b.s. So I will be taking my storage needs elsewhere. read more
