This is my go-to spot for clothing alterations. I've been here many times to get dresses shortened, buttons fixed, and more extensive changes made to clothing, and the owner always does a wonderful job, I am a satisfied customer every time! The turnaround time is not the fastest, but it's not ridiculous either, recently was quoted 4 days for small changes on 2 pieces of clothing... I'm sure you could ask for a faster time if needed. The lady is really nice. This is probably the best tailor and alteration place in San Jose because you get quality work at such an affordable price ($10 total for those 2 pieces of clothing I got altered/fixed). They only accept cash, but with the low cost, that's fine with me. Parking is limited, there's just a small driveway (because it's a converted house), but there's free street parking (partly dirt) on Florence Ave, so I never have a problem when coming here. read more

I went to Capitol Tailor based on a recommendation from my friend, and I'm so glad I did! I was tired of wearing boot cut and straight legged jeans so I brought them here to get them tapered (to skinny jeans). I brought in 5 pairs of jeans, and instead of trying on my jeans prior to the alteration, I brought in a pair that I already love and had her use that as a sample. I also got a few sweaters taken in at the sides and sleeves, which was pricier than getting my jeans tapered (taking in the sides + sleeves were around $17 but that probably depends on the type of top/sweat). Overall, her prices are reasonable and she does quality work. It took about 2 weeks for all my alternations to be ready (5 pairs of jeans and 3 sweaters), but she did ask me if I needed them early. I didn't, but if you're on a time crunch then be sure to let her know. Also, you pay as you pick up the clothes and this place is cash only. read more

I bought a pair of flare jeans because I liked how they looked on me however they were too long. I wore the pants anyway and the bottom of the jeans became frayed and looked tacky. I decided to buy three more pairs of the same jeans and have them hemmed before wearing them. I dropped off the three pants to be hemmed on Thursday, February 2 and picked up all three pants on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Capitol Tailor and Seamstress. I am really pleased with the work they did to hem the pants. They kept the integrity of the original appearance of the hem. On the left are the hemmed jeans by the Seamstress and on the right are the jeans that I wore allowing the pants to drag and fray. The hems look the same except one is now the correct length for my leg. I wish I had taken my first pair of jeans to be hemmed instead of wearing them with the length dragging as I walked. It was money well spent to have the three pairs of jeans hemmed. read more

I got my jeans altered a week before I had to leave to LA and the lady was so intricate of altering my jeans up to my length (because i'm short). After getting it altered to my size, I tried it on and it was the correct length I wanted. The seams were very clean and nothing else was damaged. The lady charged $9 for the alteration which was cheap in my opinion. read more

I randomly found this place online. I went in for a cotton button up shirt. I was quoted 15$ and told (or at least I thought), that if I bring in "2" then I'll get it for $25. I was told my shirt would be ready the next day by noon. I go to pick up my shirt and I am now told that they only take cash. Upon paying the woman, she charged me $25 dollars and said it's because of the "2" sleeves. Forgive me if I'm wrong but you should take into consideration all things before quoting a price, tell people you only accept cash (as this is not the social norm), and not charge people more for sleeves. I did give three stars -after I relaxed from the irritation of the whole experience, I realized that the woman still does quality sewing based on the threads of my shirt. read more

We should never judge a book by it's cover right? Well it stands true here. No glamour, no glory, when you are running a storefront from your home, but when you can execute, that is ALL that matters. I've taken a couple of slacks here, and Catherine (I believe she is the owner) is a perfectionist! One may think a hem is a hem, but I've experienced other places that have ruined such a simple task. For this particular visit, I brought in a pair of slacks that was part of a 2 piece suit. There was a slight tear by the pocket, which looked like it was repairable since it was located near the outer seam. Bringing it in on a Saturday afternoon, I knew my chances of getting it the next day were slim to none. Catherine mentioned that it would be ready Monday, but I asked here if there was any way to get it done by Sunday. I know...I know...probably unreasonable, but I had to ask. Her response: "Sorry, we are actually closed on Sunday." Me: "There is no possible way to get it done by Sunday (*With a sad face*) Her response: "Ok, how about you come back at 5:00PM today" (About 2.5 hours after I actually got there!!) No side note here my friends! This is just flat out AWESOME customer service! When I picked up my slacks, they were repaired PERFECTLY! Will I come back here? An emphatic YES! I've compared their prices to other places in the Bay, and I'm pretty confident they are way more competitive than others. read more

I came here to get a dress altered that I planned on wearing to a friends wedding. I have broad shoulders and needed extra material added so that the dress would fit. I brought the dress about 3 weeks prior and I was a little anxious when I was told the dress would be ready a day before the wedding. Because I thought it was an easy job, I stopped by a few days before the expected date and hoped that it would be ready sooner than anticipated. I was told I could not see my dress because it was not ready. It made me wonder that the dress hadn't been worked on at all. Nonetheless, it was ready by the forecasted date and it fit perfectly. Although I would have preferred that I have extra time, before the wedding, in the event the dress didn't fit and would need to be altered once again. Came in on a recommendation from a friend, bought in 6 pairs of jeans & 2 slacks. Kathy was very friendly and thorough, offering suggestions to my requests. I originally thought I would need to hem & taper all the pairs, but Kathy saved me $$ by suggesting only 4 needed a taper, the rest would work well with only a hem. I brought the pants in on Tues, they were ready to be picked up by Sat. Payment was cash only, and when I tried the pants as soon as I got home and they all fit perfectly. This place is great! My legs are oddly shaped so finding a pair of jeans that is slim tapered and right for me hard. So I bought a slim pair and came here to get it tapered. First thing off the bat, parking was a little difficult and the walk to it was a bit far but that wasn't too big of an issue. The lady inside was very nice and had me try on my jeans and then looked to see where I wanted it tapered. I got two pairs tapered and hemmed for $30! Not too pricey in my opinion and it was done in about 3 days. I picked it up and it looked amazing. I would recommend coming back here! read more

5 bucks to get your jeans hemmed?! Not bad! I had a bunch of jeans I needed hemmed and drove right over. The lady who hemmed my jeans was very patient as I must have had like 8 pairs. I'm short so I'm always looking for a good semetress and I have found them! She told me it would be a week which was fine, I was in no hurry. When I came to pay they accept cash or check only. Once I bought a dress that had a zipper closure on the back even though it was too small for me because I loved it and I knew she could make it work for me. And she did!! This place is run by a very sweet little Vietnamese lady. I have my jeans hem here and she charges $5 for regular hem and $10 for original hem. She does all my alterations at a great price! I used to go to a place by Valley Fair mall that did the same thing for TWICE as much! My sister got married this year and we had all the bridesmaids get their dresses taken in and shortened..they turned out absolutely fantastic!! Her shop is connected to her home so that's probably how she keeps her prices low. Parking is a little hard getting out of the driveway because it's located on a main street. However, you can always park on the side of the shop or across the street if you want to be safe. read more

This is a very small business in a house located right on Capital Ave. I had 3 pieces done and I was supposed to pick it up in a week. After a week went by, I came back and the lady told me it still wasn't finished and to come back later at 4pm because she had just started that day. I was disappointed because it's inconvenient for me to drive back again. The ladies that work here are fantastic and very courteous. They take their time and make sure they get it right, and even if it doesn't work out, they want to make sure they get it right until you're satisfied. They are familiar with modern tailoring styles as I can see from their walls having pages from the catalogues of J-Crew, Express, etc. I brought in a suit blazer and they altered the waist fit and the sleeves' length. They measured me precisely and wanted to make sure I knew what it was going to be before they worked on it. I came in 4 days later and they got it right, and did a fantastic job. They did it on a dime and the alterations look clean. They also hemmed some jeans for me and fixed a french cuff shirt that was eating my hand whole haha. Will see them again to fix another blazer of mine, keep up the good work ladies! Also, keep in mind, no tailor is perfect, sometimes they make mistakes or need to make adjustments, be patient and talk specifically about what you're looking for or you won't get what you want. read more

I bought a peacoat for winter but the smallest size was still too big on me and I didn't want to return it since I really liked the style. I wasn't sure that it could be altered considering it's a pretty heavy coat but she took a look at it and said it's not even a problem. When I came to pick it up, the new fit was like a match made in heaven! The tailor is an incredibly sweet and talented Vietnamese lady who has been doing this for over 30 years! When I took two of my dress here for altering, I came back out with two amazing fitted dress perfectly how I imagined. Their service was quick, great and easy to work with. They've asked me how soon I needed my dress and I actually told them like 7 days or sooner they were like what!? And I just said please it was last minute and unexpected. They were willing to work with me and they were very understanding. I rated this place a 5 as I was recommended there and came out super happy. Note the pictures before coming here--this shop is in a home. I was at first hesitant since the shop pictures online looked rather modest, but the quality is great--as is validated by other reviewers here. That said, the lady who runs the shop is very kind, and most importantly, was patient. I had no idea what to prepare for or how the process went, but she sized/fitted me well in a simple and painless process. The end result is fantastic. I own several shirts with styles I like, but are just too large and loose to wear casually. I brought one in and it fits great now. I'll definitely be coming back for the rest of my oversized clothing. Her work is great and her pricing is surprisingly affordable. I honestly feel I can buy in sizes larger now and just come to her to perfect it--it's hard finding a sleek and slim fit when most clothing you find for men falls dead flat. Dropped off two suit pants on a Tuesday to get the waist taken in and length shortened. Said they would be ready the next Wednesday since Monday was New Years. Completely forgot I needed the suit pants that weekend for New Year festivities. Stopped by Thursday morning asking if they can be ready to pick up that same Saturday instead of next Wednesday (even offered to pay more to expedite them).
