I've been taking my clothes here for sometime and over a year or two years ago maybe even pre-Covid actually did a good job and the past couple times that I've brought my clothes here they've done a terrible job. They ruined the hem and cut one leg shorter than the other and it's noticeable and then I thought I'd give it one more try I took a pair of pants to be hemmed this week and the hem original hymn was 2 inches. The lady was saying oh no no we can't do 2 inches is more hard. It's more hard and so she says one one and a half. I settled for one and a half then I go in and it's shorter that the hem was done shorter than what I originally had measured it to be and there's no extra material on there now to make the hem at least 1 inch of the hymn size, so it actually ruined the style of the pants because they're shorter now than what I expected and I can't wear them with heels. I can only wear them with flats and even with flats it's shorter than I would've wore. Sloppy work -also my pants were supposed to be done and completed yesterday. I pick them up today and they're not even ready that the hymn was done, but it was. The pants were thrown on the side, waiting to be ironed on the hymn where the hymn was sewn so they're just really flaky and I do not recommend them especially if it's new clothes and you're getting alterations and you just bought them like I did I would definitely say no find another another place. read more

Mai used to provide expert tailoring service. Her work was so good that I would drive across town to have my tailoring done. The people that are now in charge no longer provide high quality service and worse, price quotes are not honored. I will not be returning. read more

Would not recommend getting your clothes tailored or altered here. I am quite upset from the experience I had because for for one, they carelessly put the patches onto my scrubs and one of them is extremely uneven. Scrubs aren't cheap and I needed to have these patches on for my program, so I figured I would support a local shop. Secondly, I was accused of not paying for my alterations. I came to the shop shortly after it opened and wrote down all of my info + paid in cash prior to pickup. There were 2 copies of the receipt (my own + the store) yet the lady said she didn't remember me paying? I explained that I did indeed pay this morning and I forgot my receipt, then I proceeded to list out the total and how many items I had. It was such an embarrassing experience and there were other patrons in the shop that were being helped and looked like they didn't know what to do either. Adding in that I did not look at the clothes I got altered in the shop either, bc I was so embarrassed from that accusation I wanted to get out of here as fast as I could. read more

My favorite East San Jose alterations spot. The Vietnamese family runs this operation out of their home, and have always been the sweetest people. I've been coming to them for all my alteration needs for about 12 years and have never been dissatisfied. The prices have gone up over the years but hey, it's inflation and COLA (cost-of-living-adjustments). When you arrive, either Mai or her husband will assist you with the measurements for your clothing and that's it! You can be in and out within 10 minutes depending on how much apparel you bring in. They'll give you a receipt indicating how much the order will cost, and you can choose to pay on the spot or when you pick up. The alterations are usually completed within 2-3 days (they close by 5pm) but they won't call you to remind you -- they just don't have the capacity to so keep those receipts as reminders. We were very disappointed. Poor workmanship. $20 to reattach the satin binding on a twin size blanket. It should have been zigzag all the way around. Instead someone attempted straight stitching which missed the binding 50% of the time. It should have been checked, removed, and restitched correctly. The 4 jeans were charged $10 each and were not hemed jean style - looked uneven. The Mai we used to know from years ago would not have allowed that kind of work to leave her shop. read more

Long story short, I accidentally cut a sports jersey on accident when opening a package and was freaking out on what to do since it was supposed to be a gift. This was the closest alteration place I can find that does these types of repairs. I went in there and they were friendly enough to do a rush fix on it at a reasonable price. Mai has been our family tailor for over 20 years. She and her family do an excellent job at such a reasonable price. I am short and always need my pants as well as most sleeves altered. I am amazed at the detailed work she does on my name brand sporting jackets such as my Patagonia raincoat no one could tell that it was altered and it fits perfectly. I've came here before and didn't have problems. A few days ago I came in to get a dress altered, I told the old woman what I wanted done and she started putting pins into the dress and I was confused, she finished and I told her it's not really what I wanted to do, so I explain again to her, she's not really paying attention. She's talking to another women and then looks back at me while I'm waiting for her to respond and she just says "that's what I'll do for you, if you don't like it take it off, go somewhere else" and then the woman behind her laughs. I mean that's exactly what I did, I took it off and walked out, we didn't say anything to each other on the way out. Very shocking experience here, hopefully other people have better ones. Just very rude and lazy of her to say that. read more

They are friendly, they always do an excellent job and they are great about telling you up front if you're requesting an alteration that they don't recommend. Prices are good and they are quick. I would give them no stars if I could! Bad service and poor customer service. They gave my pants I had hemmed here to someone else. Then kept telling me that someone else picked it up! Ahh I love going here to get my pants altered! It's cheap, it's a business out of someone's house (which is common in East Side SJ). And they can get your pants done the same day as long as you have it in by 10am, you can get dress pants altered by 4pm. And I think I paid $7 for it! Ah don't be deterred by the lady who speaks very little English, she understands you just fine. I think she just speaks very little in general, I'm almost sure she speaks English just fine. Anyhoot, if you need something done quick...for cheap and you're near the neighborhood...I'd suggest you drop your things off at Mai's Tailoring/Alterations! Definitely 5 stars. Most of the 4 star reviews didn't give a 5 because of the parking. The review should be based solely on service, so the 4's can turn to 5's. The business is out of their house and is on a busy street. Mai is great. She gets the job done and for a very affordable price. $6 to hem pants, $12 to bring in the inseam, $8-10 to make the waist small or bigger. I have probably taken 12-15 slacks and 10 pairs of jeans here. Mai can take straight jeans and turn them into skinny jeans for $12 bucks. Awesome alterations! read more

What a great find!!! They do same day service for hems for only 6 bucks! Plus they do a excellent job! I tell all my friends about this place.. Really Small place, but doesn't even matter since you are either dropping off or picking up something. My girlfriend introduced me to this place one day and she comes here like everyday just to get any of her clothes altered. Shoot even her mothers clothes. I brought my brother to make his boot cut jeans to fit like a perfect straight leg which gives him the best "stacks" which means the altering is good. For its price, its way worth it and way on time. You may even ask for a same day service. Though the negatives is that its on a really busy street, and that the store is their own house, yet that doesn't affect the altering one bit. In conclusion if you live in east side san jose and you need to change something about your clothes, come here! This place is great and incredibly affordable! I brought in 6 pairs of jeans to be hemmed and Mai did a fantastic job!! I am from Seattle and hemming can cost anywhere from $12-18 and she only charges $6! I give her 4 stars because her work is great and she is very polite, however parking was very tricky given that Story Road is a busy arterial and she does not accept cards, cash only. I was excited about this place because 1) it had good reviews, and 2) the three (clientele) women I talked highly about this place. I needed to get my VERY tule wedding dress altered (bustle, add fabric around the breast, and 2 rhinestones belts around the waist). When I explained to the woman what I needed to be done, she said she would NOT do the bustle because she had done it before and it does not come out right, which is respectable because I'd rather her be honest than do it and it comes out bad. So for the remaining alterations (added fabric around the breast, and 2 rhinestone belts around the waist), I was charged $75 One week later, everything was done!!!!! ... but when I arrived, I was told that only one belt was added and the second belt would NOT get added because the tule would get caught in the belt and she complained that it took her 4 hours to do!!! so I ended up leaving with a dress half done. I ended up paying $55 for the 2 minimal things she did. read more

No frills, no bells, no whistles, no non-sense. Mai made her business out of her converted garage right on Story Road, next door to Super Taqueria. Simple, they do quality tailoring for almost free! For example, she will hem any pair of pants for the steep price of $5. If you save up for a while, then that shouldn't hit you too hard. The place isn't big at all. Like I said, it's a converted garage with only two telephone booth (do those still exist?) sized dressing "rooms", and if those are both occupied by individuals over 5'8", they're pretty much staring at each other. Another thing, Mai doesn't speak English. Being so established on the East Side, she's picked up a little Spanish, but Vietnamese is the language of choice here. No worries though. I've been going to her for about three years now, and our entire professional relationship is based upon hand gestures and pointing to a calendar. I don't give out the dreaded one star reviews easily, an establishment has to really earn it. Mai's Tailoring did just that today. I went there last year to get a few pants hemmed and I also asked her to remove pockets from a pair of white pants because they were visible through the pants. When I got the items back she ended up just sewing all the pockets shut, which is not what I asked for. I chalked it up to a language barrier miscommunication, so I just cut the pockets out myself and it turned out OK. Today was the day in which really earned this place their 1 star. I walk in with the same white pants that I actually never even wore because I needed to get them hemmed. As I walk in I notice that there were three ladies in there getting dresses fitted. Being the patient person that I am, I just take a seat by the window and just waited quietly. The man who was there asked if I needed to try the pants on and I said "yes." I continued to wait. About ten minutes passed and she was finishing up on the last girl in the group. Another customer walks in with a toddler and a baby in a carrier. The tailor lady glances over and then asks one of the dress girls to move their stuff out of the dressing room. The lady moved out all her stuff and then the tailor told her to go in and get changed. Her words exactly "go get dressed, you have a baby." Since when do babies give you a cut in line free card? I was sitting there for 10 minutes and I wasn't offered a room! The least she could do is ask me if it was OK to let this lady in first. Seriously, the baby was chillin' and so was the mom. I don't see the great urgency in getting her in. Maybe I should take a baby to the DMV or better yet Disneyland if this is the new trend. I bounced out of there immediately and never looked back. Customer service and respect are key in my book. This place obviously does not value my business, so I will make sure to take it to someone who does. Sorry Mai you guys suck. read more

Mai's is your regular, run-of-the-mill garage business. Sure, she doesn't really SPEAK to you in English, but she (for the most part) understands when you speak to HER. She did a good job of hemming my pants (I brought in 9 pairs all at once), and it took about 4 days to get them back. The hems were right on the mark and I had no complaints. read more

She's been really shady lately. This place used to be quite reliable and affordable. However, I recently had a friend pick up something for me which cost $150 to do. When I brought it in... I had specific request to use a specific thread. When my friend picked it up, it wasn't the thread we had agreed on. I just called her... asked if she spoke english.... and she started speaking in vietnamese. (I know she speaks english). Luckily for me... is speak vietnamese... and when I started speaking vietnamese back to her... she was in shock a little. but then was still really mean over the phone. read more

If you need simple items hemmed this is the spot for you. Pants, skirts, dresses, etc. Anything more complicated, I'd find a less busy spot to make sure your needs are properly understood. Mai's quality is ok for simple jobs. She sometimes looks mad and doesn't speak much, but I'm guessing it's because she's super busy. Great service and quick turnaround - they altered 3 pairs of pants to make the waist smaller and shorten the length in less than a week. They look and fit great.
