In late fall, we were cleaning out our garage when a young man representing a company in Millersville walked up and said that we should have our roof looked at because it was streaking probably due to algae and showing signs of wear. He indicated there was an estimator in the area, and would give us a quote good for a year. The estimator did come by and did a thorough job. He even went into the attic above our garage, and showed where there was possible leakage. He gave us a quote, but if we signed a contract then he would give a significant discount. Not sure about the need for a new roof, we waited and at the next significant rain, noticed there was water seepage near the ridge vent and along one of the rafters. We did need our roof to be replaced. However, like any good homeowner, we decided we needed another quote. So we called Long Roofing, who perhaps advertises more than any other company. Their rep was very professional, showed us samples, and provided a quote which included new gutters and re-roofing our small shed/greenhouse. Of course, if we signed a contract on the initial visit, he would include the gutters free along with gutter guards, but was about 40% more than the previous quote. Not being satisfied with the two estimates, we went online and found Capitol Improvements, a local Bowie company, with impressive reviews on Yelp and HomeAdvisor as well as an A+ rating by Better Business Bureau and Super Service Award from Angie's List. Pat Jewel, the owner, came by to provide an estimate. He provided a thorough explanation of the project, including replacing the gutters with gutter guards and the shed/greenhouse. He was extremely personable, and there was no pressure to sign a contract. The materials he presented were the same if not higher quality than the others. He readily provided addresses of other work he had done in the area, something the others seemed reluctant to do. He also explained the little nuances he uses around fireplace chimneys and connecting downspouts which others never covered. He also has an app which allowed us to look at what the various colors of shingles would look like on our house. His price was significantly less than Long Roofing. Needless to say, we went with Capitol Improvement. His crew showed up about 7:00 am. They worked until it got dark and came back then next day to finish the ridge vent and shed/greenhouse. The gutters and gutter guards were installed a few days later. They were very professional and cleaned up afterwards. In fact, our patio has never been this clean in years. They made the whole process as comfortable as can be (as great as the price was, a new roof is still an expensive and kind of scary). But...oops. Something happened during the installation and our downspout came detached from the gutter. And they didn't fix it. THEY REPLACED IT. That's right, instead of just repairing the issue, they made it right by replacing the entire front gutter and downspout on the house. (I don't have to tell you who we are going to hire when we need the rest of the gutters done.) Customer for life right here, folks. This happened for us with several other roofers (called back a week later or no response at all) but Pat answered the phone on a Saturday and schedule an appointment right away** Capitol Improvements was great and we highly recommend them. We had our entire roof and gutters replaced and are very satisfied with the results. We first spoke with Pat on the phone then his son, Lance, came out for the consultation and quote. The price they original gave was reasonable compared to others and they were willing to work with us to accept our requests for specific materials. Lance was also very responsive in answering all of our questions through email and phone. The materials were delivered on schedule and the crew arrived early on installation day. They were very efficient and finished earlier than we expected. They also respected our neighbor's space (townhouse) and cleaned up very well after. The gutter crew was equally as quick and although they missed something we originally asked, Pat took care of it without any problems. If you are in need of roofing services, this is the company you should go with. Can't say enough good things about Pat/Austin and their family run business. They were very professional, understood my needs/concerns as a customer and explained everything so that I felt comfortable with the entire process. Couple of quick points that stood out to me: 1. Pat Jewell, the owner, came to my house for the estimate. He was easy to talk to and was not high pressure. His price and warranty was the best of the three estimates I received. He gave me two references which I called. Both were very pleased with his work. One of them, a church, has had him come back for a second job on another section of their roof. It has been a very rainy season which delayed the job for several weeks. When we got a break in the forecast, they scheduled the job for a Saturday. The crew of six showed up around 9:30. They were professional and got to work right away. The crew worked steadily all day until nightfall and finished the job that same day. Each crewmember knew their job and didn't need a lot of instruction. Danny, the crew supervisor, answered questions I had during the installation process. I was pleased with the way they reconstructed the protrusions through the roof for my air conditioner, attic fan and skylight. They also did a good job with replacing some rotten wood on the edges and rehanging the gutters so they wouldn't sag with the weight of ice in the winter. I must say, my experience with Capital Improvements could not have been better. From initial consult, to product selection through installation, Pat and his team were remarkable. Pat and his family run business, Capitol Improvements, did a wonderful job from start to finish with our new gutters and gutter guards.
