4/7/24 - I usually go in to get my breakfast. My favorite donut is the buttermilk bar but when I go they are usually gone, so I get my other favorite the glazed donut. So I am a little hungry and it's going to be at least another three hours or more before I get dinner. I was very shocked to find out that their last day is 4/26 /25 after I think it said 30 years. I asked the lady why they were leaving and he said it was because the owner of the building did not want to renew their least. How sad!! I have noticed that almost everything on that building is new stores. Songs Hot dogs did not last long but got replaced by a dumpling restaurant. I was shocked to see a Papa John's Pizza place in there because I don't think they are one of the major pizza places. I also wondered why Baskin-Robbin's was no longer there, but maybe like the donut shop they didn't want to renew their lease. They know if they get new faces in there they can get mite rent or lease money, but you know that isn't always good business. People like myself rely on the old places being there. This donut shop was very convenient to me on my way to the freeway and I loved bringing my grandchildren there for Saturday treats. I usually let them get whatever they want and it doesn't cost. Dry much even if I get something. The donut shop passed the freeway is a different story--two donuts and a drink is $8.00 just for one person. Who can afford that for donuts!!! I will miss the couple from the business and will have to go to the other donut shop on Hammer Lane on my way to the freeway. They have good donuts too, but aren't always convenient for me. I have to inform my family that this place is leaving. My little brother who is now grown & on his own lives in Sacramento now but will be sad to hear that this donut shop will be leaving because this is the only donut shop he knows about. My older brother .& his wife go to one close to their home now, but he too was a faithful customer and when I tell him he will be shocked!!! I don't care for the donut shop they go to, the person behind the counter is so nonchalant and doesn't seem interested in anyone and one time I bought a cup of coffee and it was empty and I went to the other coffee canister and the coffee was cold, but I had to get it because I had already paid for it. I have never seen such a big long john in my life. This one bavarian filled maple long john is almost as big as my forearm and as heavy with so much cream inside. I think I got the last one for the morning and now I know why. These are so good. This is the equivalent of like 3 donuts. I have never got so much cream in a donut before. I am in love. For 2.35 this is the cheapest breakfast you can get because I'm about to go into a simultaneous sugar rush and food coma from how full I am from eating one of these. read more

I love this place! Every time I come to visit my parents from San Francisco, this donut cafe beats the rest in terms of quality of taste, presentation, and variety! Not to exclude the exceptional customer service! I didn't get his name but will next time, but he is always so welcoming, greets you with a smile, and lets you know your business is appreciated. But that is likewise for me too! When I bring the dozen donuts to my family with an apple fritter for my mom, their smiles and joy are worth it to me each and every time. Note: Carry out only (due to COVID-19, very understandable). ALSO, there's a minimum purchase for card users. We visited the shop later in the day (around 2pm). They had the classics fully stocked. Classics like chocolate frosted, caramel frosted, glazed, sugar coated, custard filled long John, raspberry filled long John, the twisted ones, and some fritters. I tend to judge a donut shop by how they make the most basic donut. The sugar donut!! Sugar donut- SO SOFT!!!! You bite into it and it springs back up. This would be so good with a cup of coffee. You can see all the air bubbles from a beautiful rise before it was fried. Chocolate frosted- Because the basic donut was so good it was very well complimented with the chocolate frosting in top. The donut itself isn't sweet so any addition like sugar coated or chocolate frosting pairs very well. Custard filled Long John- It did take 3 bites to bet to the custard but there's was PLENTY of custard. The custard is sweet which goes well with the donut since the bread itself isn't overly sweet. Cake donut- I don't like judging cake donuts because I don't like the density. This cake donut is sweeter than the basic yeast donut. It has great color which means it wasn't over fried which can be a problem because they want to make sure it's fully cooked. Lastly! Just look at what I got... 2 Donuts and a cup of Coffee... The prices on Donuts, whether fancy or the plain variety, here at Capitol Donuts has to be the HIGHEST in Stockton. Talked to the owner for awhile... he's had this business for seventeen years, and says this is the slowest he's ever seen. Doesn't help that Mervyn's Department Store, a few doors down, closed. I really enjoy Capitol Donuts. They definitely lean towards the dense, cake-y side of donuts as opposed to Krispy Kreme who make theirs light and airy (which I don't care for). These are the kinds of donuts I grew up eating. I don't know why people are complaining about the prices here. Everything is inflated- you're not gonna find a donut for $0.50 anymore. Besides, I'd rather buy local and support this independent business than buy from Krispy Kreme (which is even more expensive than Capitol, and I personally feel like I don't get my money's worth- because they're so light and airy, I need to eat an extra one to feel as full as I would eating just one of Capitol's dense donuts) The decor... Okay, not gonna lie, their donuts are pretty good. Really dense and not too sweet! Donut King's donuts are definitely lighter and fluffier though, but I prefer the ones here. Why only 3 stars then? I walked in mid day and this middle aged lady was taking a tray of donuts out of the oven and put them out. Yes, the prices of their coffee and pastry are above average, but, then, so is the taste of both. I stop by there several times a week, on my way from work in Stockton to another job out of town. The break always refreshes me, not only from the brew and donuts, but also the conversation with the owner, a really terrific Cambodian fellow who has seen some heartache in his life, including much of his family being wiped out by the Khmer Rouge years ago. Now that the old Mervyn's has been replaced by Hobby Lobby and the College Laundry is almost back in operation directly across, I suspect that the shop will begin to pick up business.
