Ok, so the food was delicious, and the patio ambiance (minus the beetle on my lap and the rats in the distance (outside eating) was lovely. We ordered: meatballs (so savory and flavorful with the perfectly soft mozzarella) frito misto - plentiful and expertly cooked capa tosta salad - fresh, with a variety of textures and flavors pumpkin ravioli - my favorite (the balsamic reduction was like a dessert pasta topping) and chocolate truffle (choco ice cream which was in fact delicious). All and all it was a fantastic experience, with the exception of one tiny thing: our server (who was very kind and attentive) tried to leave without telling us that they were closing out their shift (caught them lowkey sneaking past our table and called them out). Then our servers cousin took over for them, which was doubly crazy and hilarious. Note: next time let your customers know your shift is over and that someone else will be finishing out the evening. We are feeling devastated and upset to have our Valentine's Day dinner reservations cancelled without any prior warning from the restaurant that they are closed for renovation. We made these reservations weeks ago. The fact that they allowed people to sign up for reservations knowing they would be closed is beyond me. Cute Italian joint with small + fresh selections, solid + strong drinks, pleasing ambiance (upstairs), and friendly staff, but it comes with a high price point. The food experience was based on the calamari, veal tortellini, + lobster ravioli with vodka bisque, paired with Tony's Negroni. What I loved about the experience was that upon entering we saw the main floor was booked (reservations recommended), but we were given an option of the bar or we could head upstairs and choose a seat. We walked upstairs and the vibe was open and pleasantly appealing with low violet lighting. It was definitely more of a relaxed vibe than the crowded and chatty downstairs, and what you prefer will depend on your own personal preference since both were appealing in different ways. The menu is small, so ensure you look before going. The table bread, I have to say, was nothing to note on. It was basically a thin french bread sliced into very small slivers. The calamari sharing plate was pricey at $18, however TOTALLY worth it. It may have been the largest calamari plate I've ever had. It was perfectly breaded and crispy. Tortillini has never been my thing, so I'll say it was alright, but wouldn't make me order tortellini more in the future. I initially wanted the Chicken Marsala, but they were out, so I went with the crab and lobster ravioli, which ended up being full of flavor, very fresh and satisfying. The vodka bisque it was plated in was also super tasty, you could have definitely dipped in some bread to savor it. I literally ate the whole thing it was so good. The drinks were DC-style cocktail pricey at $18, but they were also delicious and strong. Overall experience was pleasant, and it would be perfect for a casual date-night. Not a cut, just an observation. I would say it has a cozy kind of place good for a date or family dinner out. I grab a seat at the bar. I already looked at the wine selection so I decided on a glass of the house red. The menu has a lot of good choices but I ultimately decided on the chicken parmesan with pasta and sauce. It's a Thursday at dinnertime and I'm alone in the restaurant...maybe later things will pick up. My food arrives and smells delicious. I order a wine refill and I'm enjoying the tasty sauce and tender chicken. It's two tenders vs a chicken breast but no matter. Solid quality and taste. After a while I pay the check and I'm out. I came to Capa Tosta for a friend's graduation celebration and was really impressed! We had the entire upstairs space to ourselves for the evening with two large tables to accommodate everyone. There was a bar upstairs as well, although it was really just a space for serving water and taking beverage orders since all drinks were made downstairs and brought up to us. The menu had a great selection and they even had gluten free penne pasta! Yay! I started with an aperol spritz and then shared brussel sprouts and truffle fries with some of my tablemates. Holy moley, the brussel sprouts were amazing. Dare I say, some of the best I've ever had? The truffle fries were good too, very flavorful and a nice shoestring cut. I got the gluten free penne with vodka sauce and chicken as my entree. It was well prepared and was a generous serving size (enough for leftovers). It's always a little questionable ordering gluten free pasta because if it is overcooked even just a little it will quickly fall apart. The dish came out perfectly al dente. I love local spots, such as Little Coco's, an Italian neighborhood spot in Columbia Heights that consistently hits it out of the park. Unfortunately, this was not the case with Capa Tosta. Our server, while very friendly, was not just dropping the ball the entire night, it's like he never even had it in the first place. We were seated next to the door -- fine, even if it was February in DC. After being seated, we waited over 20 minutes before our server actually showed up. We ordered everything at once since my partner and I have kids (who were very hungry). But after 30 minutes passed and my husband and I still didn't have a cocktail, we knew something was off. Turns out, not only were our drinks never put in, but neither was our dinner! Okay, lapse of memory. We then had to completely go through our entire order. We asked for bread a few times to help keep the 3.5 year olds happy, but it never came. Then when we asked for more water, our server spilled the pitcher all over my partners bag with his laptop! We had to order take-out because they said they were booked solid for the entire evening even though we arrived right after opening and the place was completely empty. Um, ok. Perhaps we were refused service because we were dressed casually? Last time I checked my money was still green. Portions of food were small and absolutely tasteless. For $30 I got an appetizer sized portion of tortellini (exactly 12, I counted) in an alfredo sauce(?) that had the taste and consistency of glue. It would be easy to still be hungry after ordering this dish as a main course. Gnocchi tasted like someone cut up Pillsbury dough and tossed it in some tomato soup. Bolognese sauce was also completely bland, if it was Chef prepared I suspect his last name was Boyardee. Fritto Misto calamari was decent but nothing special. I think their food looks a lot better on their Instagram than it does when it's actually served, maybe they can give me the Instagram food instead. Overall, my reaction is meh. I just don't understand where all these rave reviews came from, it's like they ate somewhere completely different. But $28 for the "Feast" (a charcuterie plate) and all we got was those teeny tiny triangles of cheese? Please please tell me they messed up and gave us a "Nibble" order instead? (Also, i then def want my money back.) And it wasn't even good or unique cheese and meat. We, honestly, had better in our fridge. It was a HUGE letdown. $8 for "garlic bread"? What part of that was "garlic bread"? Pretty much zero garlic and a little slice of some cheese thrown on top. It was inedible. The fritto (fried calamari, shrimp, and zucchini) was tasty. We were seated right away and there was only one other couple in there since it was early (just before 5pm) and it filled out a bit more by the time we left around 6:30. The crispy artichoke appetizer was delicious! It was lightly fried and drizzled with a refreshing lemon pesto sauce. I got the Orechiette pugliese- homemade pasta with sausage and broccoli rabe in a white wine sauce. My pasta was quite oily and wasn't as flavorful as I expected. I would like to try something else next time as they have a lot of great options. My friend really enjoyed her Cavatelli Pesto with shrimp. The pesto was similar to the that which was drizzled over the crispy artichokes and it was light but flavorful. The prices are a little bit on the expensive side but if you're looking for a more formal Italian dinner- this is a great place to check out! I've never seen such a small amount of bread served let alone baguette slices. We asked for more bread and they gave us another 3 slices. Pretty strange. They have olive oil and vinegar at the table but the only place to pour it was our large plates we got for the appetizer. So it went all over the entire plate and ruined our artichoke. Our mains were also not impressive. The cacio e Pepe was cold and covered and way too much Parmesan. It was hard to eat. We didn't say anything because our waitress was quite young and it didnt seem like we would get anywhere with complaining. The patio was lovely and the drinks were good. This is a long overdue five-star review, but I'm finally checking it off my list. Capa Tosta is a phenomenal place - the food and people are wonderful! My partner and I came here for Valentine's Day, and it was an "escape" because the ambiance and food were on point. The dessert was the perfect ending to a beautiful Valentine's Day dinner. After a wonderful experience there, I knew I had to take my sister and her friends there as the place for dinner before we painted the town red (as part of her bachelorette weekend). The bachelorette dinner celebration was held in April and the team at Capa Tosta really took good care of us. They made our table look and feel extra special for the occasion, and my sister (bride-to-be) LOVED every minute of it.
