We are feeling devastated and upset to have our Valentine's Day dinner reservations cancelled without any prior warning from the restaurant that they are closed for renovation. We made these reservations weeks ago. The fact that they allowed people to sign up for reservations knowing they would be closed is beyond me. My friend and I made last minute reservations for 7:45 p.m. on a Wednesday evening for dinner and drinks. We left impressed. Here's why. 1) Food: The menu is divided between starts, mains, and a surprisingly large dessert menu. My friend ordered the bolognese and I the chicken parm. We both really enjoyed our meals. The chicken parm is HUGE! It's a large thin cut of chicken on top of pasta. The pasta came with vodka sauce, which I don't usually like, but loved this one. My wife is a frequent partner on my dining adventures, but she leaves the Yelp review writing to me. She'll often share her opinions on a place, but for this dining experience she insisted that I give it 5 stars and she was 100% correct! Not a cut, just an observation. I would say it has a cozy kind of place good for a date or family dinner out. I grab a seat at the bar. I already looked at the wine selection so I decided on a glass of the house red. The menu has a lot of good choices but I ultimately decided on the chicken parmesan with pasta and sauce. It's a Thursday at dinnertime and I'm alone in the restaurant...maybe later things will pick up. My food arrives and smells delicious. I order a wine refill and I'm enjoying the tasty sauce and tender chicken. It's two tenders vs a chicken breast but no matter. Solid quality and taste. After a while I pay the check and I'm out. This is the second restaurant recommended by de.eater.com that has been in a rough neighborhood. I'll be doing my research elsewhere. I came to Capa Tosta for a friend's graduation celebration and was really impressed! We had the entire upstairs space to ourselves for the evening with two large tables to accommodate everyone. There was a bar upstairs as well, although it was really just a space for serving water and taking beverage orders since all drinks were made downstairs and brought up to us. I love local spots, such as Little Coco's, an Italian neighborhood spot in Columbia Heights that consistently hits it out of the park. Unfortunately, this was not the case with Capa Tosta. Our server, while very friendly, was not just dropping the ball the entire night, it's like he never even had it in the first place. We were seated next to the door -- fine, even if it was February in DC. After being seated, we waited over 20 minutes before our server actually showed up. We ordered everything at once since my partner and I have kids (who were very hungry). But after 30 minutes passed and my husband and I still didn't have a cocktail, we knew something was off. Turns out, not only were our drinks never put in, but neither was our dinner! Okay, lapse of memory. We then had to completely go through our entire order. We asked for bread a few times to help keep the 3.5 year olds happy, but it never came. Then when we asked for more water, our server spilled the pitcher all over my partners bag with his laptop! Omg, what a mess! Our food eventually arrived -- and the kids were so hungry and cranky. For $30 I got an appetizer sized portion of tortellini (exactly 12, I counted) in an alfredo sauce(?) that had the taste and consistency of glue. It would be easy to still be hungry after ordering this dish as a main course. Gnocchi tasted like someone cut up Pillsbury dough and tossed it in some tomato soup. Bolognese sauce was also completely bland, if it was Chef prepared I suspect his last name was Boyardee. Fritto Misto calamari was decent but nothing special. I think their food looks a lot better on their Instagram than it does when it's actually served, maybe they can give me the Instagram food instead. Overall, my reaction is meh. It was cold so he originally ordered a hot toddy. The bartender suggested a boozy cappuccino. We didn't taste much booze but it was cold so he had more than one ;) when we got the check we found that each of his drinks was $4 for the cappuccino plus $12 for the shot of whatever was in it, making that a pretty pricey weak drink. We received complimentary fresh bread with olive oil and cracked black pepper. The Crispy Artichoke tasted delicious with the fresh green sauce. The pastas were tasty and perfectly al dente. We were seated right away and there was only one other couple in there since it was early (just before 5pm) and it filled out a bit more by the time we left around 6:30. I got the Orechiette pugliese- homemade pasta with sausage and broccoli rabe in a white wine sauce. My pasta was quite oily and wasn't as flavorful as I expected. I would like to try something else next time as they have a lot of great options. My friend really enjoyed her Cavatelli Pesto with shrimp. The pesto was similar to the that which was drizzled over the crispy artichokes and it was light but flavorful. The service is also phenomenal and our server, Arturo, went above and beyond to make us feel special! Both pastas were cooked perfectly with a great bite. The bolognese had a deliciously classic home-cooked feel to it. The ravioli was an absolute star. My boyfriend usually doesn't go for seafood pastas and he said it was his favorite dish of the night. For dessert, we got the bombolini and chocolate truffle. We had high hopes for Capa Tosta based on the 4.5 stars, however our experience was pretty subpar. They gave us a tin of bread but it was 3 slices of a baguette. I've never seen such a small amount of bread served let alone baguette slices. We asked for more bread and they gave us another 3 slices. Pretty strange. They have olive oil and vinegar at the table but the only place to pour it was our large plates we got for the appetizer. So it went all over the entire plate and ruined our artichoke. Our mains were also not impressive. The cacio e Pepe was cold and covered and way too much Parmesan. It was hard to eat. We didn't say anything because our waitress was quite young and it didnt seem like we would get anywhere with complaining. We stumbled upon Capa Tosta driving through the neighborhood. Overall we absolutely LOVED IT! The ambience is snug and welcoming, the music was fun and up beat. drinks: We ordered the house red wine which was delicious and an espresso martini which was excellent! It had additional tiramisu liquor and was well made! Apps: we ordered fried artichoke and bruschetta. The fried artichoke was good, nothing extraordinary but the bruschetta was really nice. It came with burrata on top which was a nice touch. Dinner: ordered the eggplant parm (as a meal) and asked the owner to modify the gnocchi burrata to make with vodka sauce (which they kindly did despite it being a busy Saturday night). The eggplant literally melted in your mouth and the gnocchi was so soft! There was a side of Italian hot sauce that was excellent, something we had never had before. Dessert: cannoli and bombolini. The cannoli was to die for! Probably one of the best we've had and the bombolini was so yummy. The serving size for the latter was large so took the rest home.
