Really delicious tacos at a very affordable price ($2.50-$4 for a double-wrapped taco overflowing with fillings). I am vegetarian and was not disappointed by the offerings. I tried the black bean, potato, and vegan chorizo (i.e. spiced tofu) tacos and loved each one. The potato taco in particular was amazing -- the combination of fried potato croquette, avocado, and crema was fantastic. I also got an order of the elotes and loved it too. Its a crime that Chipotle is able to stay in business within 100 miles of BTB. Here are the things that are better at BTB -the ingredients -the customer service -everything -they have queso -booze -queso -no hipsters or 10 year olds -beer That list isn't exhaustive but should give you a good idea. They also have the "chimichanga". For those of you white people who think all Mexican food is the same... your pretty much right. However, the chimichanga is the one exception. You take a burrito and then you fry it. Thats it. You may be thinking "well thats the same thing as a burrito"- you could not be more wrong. This was my first time eating here. I got the fish taco and the croquette taco. I think the fish was a little soggy but the croquettes had a nice crunch. The tacos had so much slaw that it was overwhelming I wish more things were on it. The slaw was really sour and since there was so much it was hard to taste the other parts of the taco. The fish was probably soggy because of the slaw. They have a open bar to choose your own sauces. I thought letting you choose your own sauces was nice and each one tasted really different. So one day my guy friends dragged me to "Cantina" even though I was dying to go to Panchero's. How could anyone choose another burrito place over my beloved Panch? But Cantina held its own. The burritos were so damn cheap and you can actually eat healthy here! The guys got your typical big fatties with all the goods, and I got a veggie burrito on WHOLE WHEAT. How accommodating is that? And it was delicious. Best part is, each was $4. Talk about value. And the ambiance is perfect for people-watching on South University at a bird's eye view. Also, on a Tuesday night, this is the spot. 80 cents shots. So naturally, everyone gets about 20. The atmosphere gets crazy but is intimate enough that you really have a great time with the tables around you. The vibe is totally fratboy while the music is unabashedly hipster. It's an notable incongruity that food businesses along the S. University corridor rarely possess. BTB burritos, generally speaking, are thick, heavy cylinders of food goodness for the price (but the prices have been slowly creeping up). I've been to the cantina twice. I asked for black beans in my burrito but they gave me pinto. Twice. The tortillas even tasted drier. The only saving grace of this location, besides proximity to my office, is that one can enjoy a bevvy of the alcoholic kind with their meal. I'm a bigger fan of the original State/Packard location. I am absolutely LIVID at the situation Cantina put us in. We got here two hours before the March Madness game so I could get food and drinks while we watched the game. Two hours have passed and someone who I'm assuming is a waitress is that told us we have to leave in five minutes because a huge party that had reserved our table was coming. We had not been informed of the situation until 5 minutes prior. Then they proceeded to gaslight us by saying they told everyone in the area that we needed to leave by that time. They made a mistake and are neither admitting it nor offering an alternative or discount. Only one staff member has been understanding and kind, but the manager and other waitress have been disrespectful and rude. Soooo coming from California, I like to think that I have very high expectations for Mexican food. Walking up the flights of stairs to BTB I honestly didn't know what kind of restaurant I was getting myself into. When I found out it was a cantina, I rolled my eyes. Quality mex out here in Michigan??? pssshtt. However, one bite from the steak tacos proved me wrong. The meat.... so flavorful.... While I'm not a fan of BTB Burrito, I am a fan of BTB Cantina. Located above Good Time Charley's on South U, Cantina is a Mexican bar. Along with Mexican grub, they have margaritas in additional to your usual assortment of drinks. The line is often a lot shorter or non-existent compared to Charley's so it's a good alternative if Charley's is too busy. Even though it was pretty empty when we went, they have a DJ who was playing a lot of 90s hits. Really brought us back and they have a decent-sized dance floor so you can bust out your moves. read more

You can Fire and Ice almost anything you can think of--which means double hot sauce for fire and extra sour cream and jack cheese for ice. This used to be my favorite lunch on campus, but there's been some wild variations in ingredient quality over the last few years, which combined with a palpable price increase, makes it hard for me to be as gushingly pleased as I was when this place opened. They have upped their game again since then, and are much more consistent again. And when they are on, they are totally on. The queso is pretty great, the sauce selection is a hot delight, and the chips are usually excellent. The steak varies from gristly/fatty to quite good. I'm always a fan of the robust vegan plate, which you can still get (like fire and ice style--gone but not forgotten) even though that's not on the menu. I swear they have a perfect soda fountain. Their diet coke is primo. Though they do sell sugar coke in the cooler. I also like the tacos, and the happy hour margs are exactly right for the price. I've been wanting to check out Cantina for a while and went today for lunch. I ordered 3 tacos (pork belly, fish, and carnitas). The price is great, portions were good, loved the salsa bar, and really dig the ambience, but it took FOREVER to get my food. My lunch mates were done with their lunches by the time my food came out. The guys bringing the food out didn't say why it was taking so long, just that "it's going to be a few more minutes" every time I checked in. Clearly, one of the tacos takes a long time to make, so it would have been nice for them to mention that when I ordered the slow poke. 5 stars for the food, but 1 star for the service. read more

Why this doesn't have 5 stars is beyond me. I recently visited Ann Arbor for the weekend and was extremely impressed with what BTB had to offer. The first stop at BTB was for a mid-afternoon churro after a day of drinking. Late night stop for nachos and more churros. 2 friends and I split the steak nachos and if you watched us eat them, you would probably want to throw up. We demolished them! We literally sat there, faces inches from the plate, shoveling food into our mouths trying to see who could eat the most. It was wonderful. Some boy commented on how he likes girls with appetites until we pulled out churros. Then he was thoroughly disgusted. We were not. We were in a state of sheer drunken food bliss. As a UW-Madison student, I was extremely impressed with BTB and very disappointed our campus does not have one. read more

My friends lived across the street from this place (the original location) for years - we'd always end up at their place after a hard night out and BTB was always the BEST BEST BEST way to hit the spot! It was so good that we'd often eat it the next morning (now that I look back - this is gross - don't do this). Their burritos are the best. Period. Their hot sauce is the perfect addition to ANY meal that needs spice - esp their burritos!!! I actually think this eatery was the reason I finally started dating one of my friends - he pursued me for years (which including buying my burritos) and one night over burritos I fell for him. This review is purely based on the food. I used to eat here with a couple of my friends from grad school and this was one of my fav place to eat on south u. I would always get the shredded chicken burrito bowl with a side of hot salsa. The never skimp on any of the ingredients. I love that every bite I take, there's a great mix of meat, beans, cheese, etc. the interior of this place can definitely use a face lift, but it being a bar makes it challenging since it's always going to get busy when the student are in school. I remember when I was getting settled into my new apartment, my cousin and I decided to stop by after reading some positive reviews about btb. We went to the location on state st but remember the food being very tasty and more than enough for both of us. Go to eat lunch here in the daytime and it just feels like a barren, bordering on ghostly experience. A sober burrito in the daytime yields a not so keen observation of the hard, uncomfortable tables and ever so uncozy hard cement floors and basic interior. I am sure the nighttime bar & live music scene here compliment the huge burritos here, but midday I kind of felt like "Wow, is it worth it for you guys to stay open in the daytime?" All in all, I still give 3 stars because you can get huge stuffed burritos, nachos, and what [Tex-Mex] have you made with fresh ingredients at a reasonable price. Also the counter service not requiring to tip tickles my thrift-fancy. Overall, kind of a cold uninviting interior, especially noticeable midday - but huge portions of fresh Tex-Mex at rational prices. And who doesn't love that their prices already include tax--no searching around for those pesky pennies. -Ground Beef Burrito (refried beans, salsa, cheese, ground beef): It's a great size and all of the ingredients are plentiful and flavorful. It can be dry at times so I really enjoy the "wet burrito" option as the sauce is yummy and hot cheese is great. I was not impressed with my first (and undoubtedly only) trip to Cantina. Perhaps my expectations were inflated after seeing the restaurant on various lists of hot restaurants in Ann Arbor. Or perhaps, as a Southern Californian, I have a different expectation for tacos than the general Michigan population. But the food I was served was (at best) merely passable and certainly not worth even the Taco Tuesday discount prices. I ordered three tacos: carnitas, carne asada, and fish. The carnitas was the best of the three. The pork itself was dry and less flavorful than I would have preferred, but it was served with the tastiest garnishes and had the best balance of flavor overall. The carne asada was the next best. The beef boasted a tasty marinade, but had been cooked to death. The garnishes were less inspired--simple pickled onions and a wedge of flavorless avocado--and did little to improve the dish. The fish taco was a flavorless waste of calories. I usually try to be at least somewhat positive in my reviews, by I was appalled by the fact that the strongest discernible flavor was that of the corn tortilla. Among other things, it needed more salt, a better crema, and something to give it a kick (I'd recommend pickled jalapeños or maybe a spicy pickled ramp). I had planned to try additional items after sampling the tacos, but given the experience I was content to simply leave. My reviews are overwhelmingly about the food, but for those interested: I came a little after the lunch rush (around 1pm) and found the service to be gruff and uninviting. The atmosphere is fine--perhaps a step above a fast casual restaurant--but didn't stand out either positively or negatively. read more

While this may be a place mostly known to the late night crowd, the happy hour here is fantastic! $3 margaritas! And the Mexican food here is awesome and authentic. I've had several of the tacos and my favorites are the papas and the chorizo. I was skeptical about the chorizo being paired with squash and potato straws as it sounds like an odd combo, but don't be intimidated it works perfectly!! Great gourmet tacos. Though not necessarily authentic, it is clear a lot of thought went into making them unique and delicious. The tostada costs the same as a taco and you get a lot of food, so I would recommend two tacos and a tostada for a hungry person. I love BTB Cantina but am sadly disappointed that half the time I go in there it's empty! I can't figure out why...students are too lazy to walk upstairs? It seems like often the mediocre Good Time Charley's downstairs will have a line out the door while the much cooler and more delicious BTB Cantina will be empty just a flight of stairs up. I don't get it. BTB Cantina has cerveza, sometimes live music and DJs, delightful frozen margaritas, and of course all the delicious BTB food (burritos, quesadillas, nachos) that you could want.
