I stopped by during a World Cup match, so most of the nearby bars were packed, but this restaurant was surprisingly quiet with only a few tables occupied. The décor is nice enough, but it didn't quite match the way the advertise. Unfortunately, the service was also underwhelming. It wasn't bad, but it felt pretty lackluster, especially for a restaurant at this price point. I was expecting a more polished dining experience. The food was good, but it didn't wow me. My favorite dish was the Paneer, and the kofta was also enjoyable. One thing that stood out in a negative way was the presentation. For example, when our appetizer platter arrived, some of the dishes were awkwardly stacked or hanging over one another. We ordered take-out dinner from Meesha - they have a pretty good deal for 2 people dinner (I don't remember the cost), you get 2 gravies and 2 sides (where we picked two gravies) as well. We made the bread at home and had leftover food for a few days. The food quality though - was okayish, don't get me wrong - food was good, its just that it was quite oily - we could see oil floating in the dal makhani and allo baingan and kadhai paneer that we ordered. I appreciate the efforts in making the food taste good but with the amount of oil seen, I don't know for certain if I will want to order from here again. The cumin gives a butter chicken after taste that I didn't care for. Meesha was some of the best Indian food I've had, and "Canteen By Meesha" still has great food, but what happened here? 7:30 PM on a Friday. Fridays in Fremont in full swing with live music everywhere and bars and streets full of people. In Canteen, there is just one angry looking woman in the dining room, and the kitchen staff is sitting down with nothing to do. We're sitting in what used to be a delightful back deck open to the sky and the neighborhood, but now it has a roof and has been boarded up. The server said it was his first day at Canteen, but I think it was his first day as a server anywhere. He got our orders right, but that was about it. When we left an hour and a half later, the dining room was still empty, yet the scene on the street was lively and loud. Made a reservation here. They sat us OUTDOORS in February. It is TOO cold, even with any heaters. No other restaurant does outdoor seating in February. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately have to agree with some other reviewers that the taste of the food just doesn't justify the price ...you are literally paying for the ambience and the food doesn't hit the spot. The plating is pretty but rather odd for example the luchi comes dunked in the potato stew and the ghugni chaat had a lemon piece right on top of the curry which you need to fish out. Kulcha was basically a dry butter free naan Only the moong dal halwa was tasty but the halwa isn't even the hero of the dish it's overshadowed by the ice cream ..Rabri tastes like cheese not like actual Indian rabri. Also every Indian restaurant must have a rice dish like pulao or biriyani but they had nothing rice oriented (no cumin rice doesn't count). I would try the appetizer again, but I think I'd want to find another dish to try because the other two weren't amazing. The Kulcha was more like a pita bread and did not feel fresh, chaat and croquettes were very good. The veg third course was a beet uttapam that did not feel fresh and was small in size, in comparison the non-veg third course quail biryani was very good. The fourth course was average for both veg and non-veg. Eating lamb after a year but the meat felt over salted and was lacking a refreshing element. They also ran out of the ice cream on the menu so ended up replacing it with vanilla ice cream which made the dessert too creamy and lacked freshness. We did enjoy the wine pairing with the food. All the respiratory viruses going around make eating outside seem like a good idea, but I think we are all a bit fatigued by freezing wet outdoor spaces. That's why it's so lovely that Meesha has a nice, well ventilated but also well heated outdoor space that manages to have a simple but elegant atmosphere. The service is prompt and friendly. Other yelpers talk about getting pushed out the door but we found the pace to be very relaxed - he neither ignored us nor pushed us out the door, which is great for a busy Saturday night. The drinks were interesting and delicious, I had the Meesha Old Fashioned which was sweet yet balanced and went well with the meal. The food was absolutely delicious. We appreciated how visually appealing the meal was too - pops of color. Our favorites were the potato croquettes and the paneer - both well done and complex without being pretentious. I seriously don't know how anyone can give this place less than a perfect 5 stars. I have eaten Indian food all over the world. This was crazy excellent. The interpretation here is an excellent balance between western and Indian palates. The spice level perfect, and the flavors both authentic yet perfectly adapted to American heat levels. The star of the appetizers was the fried cauliflower, the mutton and butter chicken both outstanding, the Dahl treated with the same respect. Add in some olives and a beer,,, and it was a perfect combination for four of us. I was stuffed, but decided I could not pass up dessert. All the choices on the menu looked outstanding. The wife and settled on milk cake, the daughter (a finicky 16 year old who consumed her weight in butter chicken, mutton, bread had stalled out-- but saved room for sorbet. The food was wonderful and I enjoyed almost all of the dishes very much. I even had some leftovers for breakfast! The patio is also such a calm oasis for a meal and I was very glad to have booked a table there. However, the service was really lacking - there was no greeting when we came in for our reservation and our server Karen was largely absent during our meal - I saw her being much more attentive to other tables around us but she seemed to be avoiding us altogether. I didn't feel welcome at all. I don't know why the service we received was so chilly, but I left feeling like we had been a nuisance. Prices are reasonable; keep in mind that you'll need to order a variety of items from both the appetizers and the mains to really fill the table for a group, but nobody at ours left hungry. Cocktails are on the sweet side (the Paloma was almost sickly so - it's generally a pretty dry drink?) to my taste - I would stick with wine or beer here. On to the food... not a fan of the lamb chops (underseasoned/overcooked) or the potato croquettes (mushy texture), and there's a same-same-y ness to the mint chutney (it's ubiquitous - it gets served as the topping/condiment for many of the dishes), but overall I enjoyed this meal and I would come back to try other things on the menu (the fish dishes were excellent - I would recommend any of them; prawns, salmon, rockfish - all of it). read more
