Came here for the summerlicious dinner menu. I ordered the cured west coast salmon for the appetizer, the beef strip loin + short rib for entree, and the wild rose panna cotta for dessert. I also had a sangria. They were 15 mins late giving us a table, so I was a bit annoyed when I came into the restaurant. I had been hearing nothing but praise for the place and had be looking forward to the reservation for a really long time. I was worried that this place was just one of those places that was over-hyped. I was wrong- this place fully deserves the praise it has received. Based on Summerlicious, I found my new special occasion spot. Beautifully decorated with a huge sitting space and an amazing view of Toronto, this place serves contemporary food. However, service could be better. They start with bread and hummus (they called roasted chickpea something), and they will refill it if you ask for. Drinks selection was pretty good, particularly cocktails. Funnel Pickled salad to start with, was a perfect combination of fresh crisp veggies, sweet and sourness. For mains I ordered Risoni Risotto, they were delicious, perfectly cooked. For desserts, I and my hubby shared a Summer berry crumble & Flourless chocolate cake, both were delicious with generous portions. The ambience is really romantic and the view from 54th floor is gorgeous. My husband ordered Foie Gras Parfait for starters, Ontario braised lamb shoulder for mains. He loved both of them, mains, in particular, the juicy tender lamb with distinctive flavours, well cooked. The only thing we were not impressed was, service, proper attention was not paid to us, we had to call our server many times for water or cutlery, we would have preferred a little more interactive server. This restaurant is located on the 54th floor of the TD Bank Tower. To get to this tower via the path can be a little confusing because the signs are not really clear. Furthermore there are smart elevators where you press your floor number on a screen outside the elevators and the screen directs you to a certain numbered elevator (as opposed to pressing the up or down button outside and then pressing the floor number when you step inside the elevator). The view from the restaurant is beautiful and I was lucky to have gone on a day with gorgeous weather. When I got to the 54th floor the hostess greeted me and brought me over to the table (she was not that friendly and didn't make conversation on the long walk to the table). Our server was nice. We were unsure which appetizer to order and he recommended the mushroom soup, which he said he could split into two bowls for us since we were not that hungry and were worried we wouldn't be able to finish. Mushroom soup was delicious! One of the best I've ever tried. Onto the entree: I ordered the braised lamb shoulder. It did not disappoint! The sauce however at one point tasted too salty. The other staff working there who brought our dishes were really friendly. Our server brought over a small complimentary banana bread dessert for us as a congratulations ( we were celebrating my graduation). Came here for summerlicious. Was another great experience. I got the smoke salmon salad as appetizer and it's so far the best dish I have had this summerlicious. The salmon was soft and tasted good. The veggies and sauces added many different flavours to the dish and went well with the salmon. For main I got the tuna dish. Overall I thought the dish was average. The tuna was more over cooked than I would like. Also it had a strong fishy taste too it. The other components to the dish was good but nothing stood out. For dessert I got the berry crumble. I liked the crumbles and there was a good amount of berries. Didn't like the liquid was in the bottom of the jar. After mixing the liquid with the crumble the dish started looking unappetizing. read more

Requested a seat by the window and was told they were unavailable when I arrived, and was sat in the middle lower area with no real view, reserved location on open table about a month in advance. Paid for a fancy overpriced case of food poisoning. Everything was disappointing. From service that took way too long( to serve me something that was a size of two bite sized brownie)and to be judged because we were look like young children. If I can pay for your overpriced bill and tip you above average I expect to have nicer manners and food to come out on time. Would have been faster to make your own meal at home and dishes washed verses waiting on their food. The menu was disappointing but gave them benefit of the doubt to make it tastier than it sounds. The rest of these positive reviews... are really hard to believe. Have no idea these pictures of this "great" food is coming from... because it certainly didn't look like that today. They attempted and failed terribly trying to obtain a taste that was "unique". If you find that taste of spoiled food is nice by all means go on ahead. There will be a chance you'll get the runs the entire night. Oh and the chefs got a better view than me while they cooked. I was located in the right spot in case this youngster decides to dine and dash (if that exists) to catch her on time. Everyone got to enjoy the sunset but me. So sad to see Canoe is not on ther Winterlicious list this year! The absence reminded me of the time I went there a few years ago, so I thought I should post it anyways. Hopefully they will do summerlicious or come back next year -- Appetizer: Pickled Atlantic Mackerel: I honestly didn't have high hopes for this dish but was pleasantly surprised! All components of the dish worked really well together, and amazing presentation too. Main course: Pacific Ocean Fish Croquette. This was more filling than I expected. I did find it was quite heavy. The radish kimchi was a refreshing contrast to the fried croquette, making it much more bearable. Dessert 1: Kernal PB+J. I usually don't like peanut butter, but it had such an amazing light mousse texture. I was very impressed. Dessert 2: Hewitt's Dairy Muscovado Panna Cotta. THIS WAS FANTASTIC. I was deciding between this and the caramel pumpkin cake, but I'm so glad I went for this. After trying some of the Kernal PB+J, I was hoping my dessert would have that melt-in-your-mouth texture too, and was ecstatic when it did. It was my favourite out of all the dishes, and had the perfect level of sweetness (I have a low tolerance for sweet things). The toasted kasha sprinkled on top gave a nice crunch too. I did not enjoy the sea buckthorn though, I'm pretty sure my face visibly warped when I took a bite of it. Overall, a phenomenal dish. I loved my previous visit to Canoe, it has both an amazing view and delicious food. Heard lots of great reviews of Canoe and decided to come here for a work lunch. We started off with the mushroom soup based on recommendations from someone in the elevator. Afterwards we ordered the beef and lamb from the main menu. The food was great and we really enjoyed our mains. The portions were pretty big and we were super full afterwards. Service was a bit on the slower side and I would budget more than an hour for the meal - be cognizant of time if you are rushing for a meeting. read more

Canoe is definitely one of my all time favourite restaurants, so I was elated when I found out they reopened! My family got the Bison Tartare and Sweetbreads as starters to share- they were both delicious. We all agreed that the tartare was the favourite though! As a main, I got the Baffin Island Turbot which was absolutely beautifully presented, as you can see below. The fish was so flakey & buttery and the other components, like the buckwheat + wild rice stuffed leak, really blew me away with their flavour! And finally as dessert, I got the Wild Ginger Brownie which was a really wonderful end to my meal. It was rich, decadent and covered with some fantastic tuile and mousse. Plus, the chocolate sorbet was a perfect sweetness and really refreshing. Also, the waiters were really attentive and the service was quick. I really appreciated how they explained the different elements of your dish to you when they presented your food. I've only been to Canoe for Winterlicious lunch, twice. The first time made me want to come back for the second. So when I was in town for Winterlicious, I made a point to come here for another lunch! I was super lucky to have found a reservation for lunch last minute on OpenTable, as they had been booked up, but with last-minute cancellations, reservations do open up. I did wish that we had gotten a table with a view (I put these in the OpenTable notes), but I believe those are more on a first come first serve basis. The lunch menu this year was great, with lots of delicious options. To start, we had the foie gras parfait and the poached salmon. Both were very delicious and well-balanced. For mains, we had the albacore tuna and beef short rib. These were also pretty good - not the hugest portion, but decent considering it's Winterlicious. Finally, the desserts we tried were the molasses trifle and the berry parfait. These were also quite good, but not too memorable. Plating was very nice for every dish we had. Service was all right. I wouldn't say it is outstanding, but it's certainly not bad. I don't expect too much for Winterlicious, though, I must say. Overall, during Winterlicious, it really is a deal to come here for lunch, even with the price increase. They even validate for parking on the weekend. And you can't beat that view. If I ever find myself in Toronto during liciousTO, I'd definitely have Canoe on my list! read more

Oh the views, the food, the ambiance! We thoroughly enjoyed a business dinner here and loved it. If not for our server going AWOL when we were ready for the check, this could've been as 5 star review. 54 floors to a heavenly meal, which started with an amazing northern mushroom soup. The depth of flavor and umami was all that. Then on to the entrees, which were all presented and delivered at elite levels. My salmon was a sublime experience and my teammates raved about their pork jowl and rabbit dishes as well. The desserts were exceptional as well, from the local maple/flan like slide ala mode to the sorbet. A must visit if your in this fine city on the lake. read more

Canoe never disappoints me. From the second I walk in with the view, even on a gloomy day. Appetizer: Cured rainbow trout, nori, Taramasalata, Ink cracker and seaweed persillade. It was a good portion for appetizer and the flavours were good. Albacore tuna, at first when I saw licorice potatoe, I wasn't looking forward as I don't like licorice at all. I even asked if I can substitute. However they told me that it's very light. The flavour was very unique and went surprisingly well with the potatoe. The holland marsh leeks was tasty and fresh. This plate usually have all the ingredients that I don't like but turned out well. I find my mint chocolate torte was a bit dried so I tried my friends lemon tarte. It was much better. This used to be one of my most favourite spots. Great service, high-quality food, fancy presentation. I liked to come here a lot. My bills easily reached $3-400, and I always tipped an extra 30% on the final total, so it wasn't like I cheaped out this dining experience. The last time I came was for my birthday back in November 2018. I've never been back since. The food was mediocre, first and foremost. It came out cold. Do you know why? Because it took them 45 min to bring out the appetizer. My partner and I ended up arguing. We started an argument, went through the entire argument, and made up before the appetizer arrived. That's how long it took. Then we were seated at a table right next to one of those pillars, towards the entrance of the restaurant. I specifically requested a window seat, and I saw that there were many window seats available the WHOLE time we were there. But I guess we weren't special enough, despite how much money I've thrown at them over the years. Service was mediocre, too. The staff acted like we were a waste of time, like we were beneath them. Our server switched several times, meaning there was no assigned server to our table, which is STANDARD here. The servers all miscommunicated, and it took us 20-30 min for us to even receive a single glass of water. I mean, since they quite obviously didn't want a tip, we gave them no tip. :) Never went back there again. read more

Came around 6 pm and was seated without any issues. Its too bad we didn't get a window seat because the view is truly phenomenal. As for the food, it was decent but I expected to be blown away given the prestige of Canoe. The fois gras (app) was my favourite of the set, with the caramel and ginger crumble giving a nice light touch. The strip loin (main) was cooked perfectly (med rare) but lacked flavor. The cheek was a tad dry but at least the side vegetables tasted alright if that's anything. The mint chocolate torte (dessert) looked way too sweet for my liking, but it actually tasted alright. Wish the portions were a bit bigger overall. Definitely picture worthy, wish it was more food worthy. Was nice to experience during Summerlicious nonetheless. read more

Canoe certainly has one of the best views of Toronto and it's one of my fav places to visit! What a beautiful sunset! The staff and service are always wonderful (Thank you Ali and Jesus) not to mention the beautifully presented and delicious food and cocktails ! Some of the highlights included the incredible onion soup (in an onion)! I LOVE this dish! They have a wonderful selection of seafood including these oysters and such an interesting 'surf and turf' dish of salmon plus squid stuffed with short rib! Wow! I don't even know how that came about as a concept but it was amazing! I had my fav drink the Paloma which was 'okay' but to be honest, quite diluted. Should've had my fav their oldfashioned ! The dessert (not pictured but enjoyed) was the earl grey and citrus, with decadent chocolate ganache! What a great meal! Just keep in mind that if you're looking for a window table, these are hard to come by and it's first come first serve quite often. read more

Came for lunch during Winterlicious 2017. When it comes to Canoe, unless you're here for business or it's just another regular place by your standards, you'll probably be going tourist-mode, pressed up against the windows looking down on the world below you and into the horizon. Of course, with a camera. Or perhaps that is just something I do, given that the other diners were well-dressed and I'm pretty much out-of-place. But it is winterlicious, you're likely to attract uncultured commoners such as myself that typically prefer to grab a lunch special from chinatown. Everything is well-maintained. Kitchen looks really clean. Washrooms are top-notch, though they don't have any hand-dryers. Instead they opted for paper towels.. We were seated at the west corner facing the CN tower, so there were a lot of viewing options, whether it's out into the lake on the south side, or west towards Mississauga. Because it was daytime, and snowstorm was forecasted throughout the day, we had the opportunity to observe how the distant cities looked when there's a huge snowstorm falling down on them. It was quite a sight, and something you wouldn't be able to see at night. Each dish comes with a wine pairing, if you would like to go that route. All of the dishes I ordered were great. From the foie gras, to the chuck flat, to the chocolate fondant. The beef was so tender that you could literally pick pieces apart with chopsticks. Service was good. Waiter walked over often to check up on things like water and feedback on dishes. Allowed me to challenge the dessert with chopsticks by limiting my choice of utensils. I don't know if this would be considered unacceptable, but for me it was all good. I don't know whether winterlicious reflects regular service, or how amazing the food really is for those with more experienced palates (given that I see a lot of less than stellar reviews on the food), but for me it's pretty much up there. read more

Made a reservation but still had to wait maybe 10 to 15 minutes for a table, despite being after the lunch rush. A bit pricey for lunch, but it's expected for a dining experience of this caliber. Service: Waiter was fairly attentive, although it took a while to take our orders. Was seated near a window, as requested when I made my reservation. View would definitely be nicer during the summer months. The waiter/waitress that brought each dish would explain what I was eating, a very nice touch! Food: This was definitely more than just food, it was a dining experience. The complimentary in-house made bread with tomato puree humus was very fresh, as the bread was still warm. The maple cured salmon + fogo island crab appetizer was very rich, with the taste of creamy avocado and salmon tartare, but only very small portion of crab. The braised tamarack lamb was so tender it could be cut with a fork, although it was a little on the salty side. Each dish was also plated very beautifully, almost like artwork. Beef was fatty and really gave a lot of flavor to the crostini. Definitely recommend. The main of beef filet + cheek was very beautiful. I actually enjoyed their wild rice crumble that came with it a lot. Gave it a very nice crunch and some acidity to balance out the beef. I had the dessert of panna cotta which was very unique. Very refreshing. Most people got the devil's food cake or panna cotta. To be honest, the panna cotta is probably more interesting so definitely recommend if you trying their Sumerliscious menu. Service: Very professional and high tier. Unfortunately, some waiters/waitresses had a pretty strong accent while explaining the food so I had no idea what they were saying. However, I appreciate the effort and smiles. Atmosphere: This in my opinion is the top reason to visit Canoe and their biggest reason for success. Their view of downtown Toronto is amazing especially during sunset or a sunny day. You are essentially eating dinner with the CN tower or harbourfront right behind you. This place embodies the idea of serving less food for more money. While I can't dispute the ambiance and beautiful view offered by Canoe, the value for food you get in looks vs. flavour was just adequate for me. They certainly serve their fresh ingredients with pizzazz but the problem for me was that the food simply did live up to its looks. I had a fresh salad and chicken with corn as the main. The dessert we had was a shortcake crumble and panna cotta. My favorite thing they served was the panna cotta but I would probably just save my money and get more of these elsewhere at a dessert cafe. Come for the views, stay for dessert, but keep the expectations low. read more

The quotes helped point out the pun that not only is the food 4 star quality but that the restaurant is on the highest floor of an office building A popular lunch and dinner spot for the business crowd on expense accounts, you won't feel out of place for a romantic dinner or family outing. Leave the kids at home. Aside from fantastic food, the service is 100% first class and top notch. I also had my wedding here. It didn't disappoint. The quality of food and service were on par to a regular week night. All I can say is I'm never even slightly disappointed here. Pretty late review but this is a Summerlicious review. Last minute decision and they were able to accommodate my friend and I for 11:00am (they also had an opening at 2:00pm). While we did not get a seat right beside the window, we got a booth right behind those which I thought was still pretty good. It was a gloomy day anyways so there wasn't much to see. I wasn't expecting much very because I had been a few times before over the years and it's always just been fine. I ordered the salmon tartare (sea buckthorn mayo, crispy nori, salmon roe emulsion, Haida Gwaii kelp vinaigrette = smoked oyster) , the beef cheeks (roasted baby gem, beef fat aioli, lettuce puree, caramelized onion jus, crispy shallot + wild rice crumble) and panna cotta (Ontario strawberries, caramelized puff pastry + lavender). Honestly, I've had a ton of salmon tartare and they're all pretty similar in terms of taste, nothing special but this one was REALLY good. I'm not saying it tasted different but it was just perfect! My friend and I both really liked this dish and were really excited for the rest of the meal thinking it would continue to be bomb. It was just that good. While I wish I could say it was amazing from beginning to end, it wasn't. The beef cheeks were a little bland and dry. If there was more sauce or if the sauce wasn't so thick an gooey, I would have preferred it more and might have fixed the issues I had with it. I didn't really care for the wild rice crumble or really anything on the dish. Everything was like meh. Portion wise, there was a lot of meat and my friend and I could barely finish this. I think I ate half of it and took the rest home. The panna cotta was small and very underwhelming. There's supposed to be lavender in this but I couldn't taste it. I felt like I was eating more puff pastry than anything else and the puff pastry wasn't even great. If this is how their desserts are normally (I honestly can't remember anymore), I would definitely pass on them. The salmon tartare made us expect a spectacular lunch but it was just mediocre and was how we felt it would be originally. I feel like most people come here for the view and as long as the food isn't horrible, they'll be happy. Went to Canoe for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend a week ago. Great space, warm and very inviting, apparently has great views (unfortunately was super foggy the night went). Overall an nice experience but overpriced in my opinion. Had their tasting menu $115 and wine pairing $60. Wine pairing was totally worth it and was our favourite part of the entire meal. Honestly though, it's way too overpriced for the quality and quantity of the dishes. Out of the 8 dishes there was only one dish that really made an impression - the onion soup. It was creamy, flavourful, and matched perfectly well with the wine pairing. While all the plates were presented well, unfortunately the flavour profiles of the other dishes fell quite short. The sommelier was amazing and super knowledgeable. I really enjoyed his explanations and wine gems. The service overall was pretty good. However they placed a wine bucket right beside our table and it was rather annoying having the servers consistently walking between our table to grab the bottles. I would imagine it would be better to place the wine cooler right beside the table they're serving. Frankly it ruined the ambiance quite a bit. read more

To celebrate my final night in Toronto, I decided to go with Canoe. Despite inclement weather, we braved the stormy rains and headed over to the restaurant perched high in a financial building with an expansive view of the city. Check in was a breeze and since we requested a view, the hostess kindly asked us to relax at the bar while she checked for available seating. Our wait was brief enough for us to enjoy a few drinks before we were seated, which suited me just fine. We started with a carrot, garlic & orange olive oil spread - the color was vibrant and the flavors were tangy and robust! It coupled perfectly with the warm pumpkin seed bread and the pairing was seasonally appropriate. Raw Bar: Malay Oyster and Covel bay from New Brunswick Tuna tartare Scallop ceviche Shrimp with pear & red pepper couly Kim Chi torched Salmon Jumbo shrimp salad The oysters were a big hit as expected as well as the tuna tartare and scallop ceviche. The Kim chi torched salmon, however, wasn't especially appealing to me. The flavor profiles just seemed a bit off and the salmon didn't taste fresh to me. Rib Eye was divine! It was prepared beautifully with a nice crust to it and a warm pink and juicy center. Coupled with the roasted mustard aioli, each bite made my mouth instantly water. The supporting cast of portobello pickles, crispy layered potatoes, and roasted carrots all added to the earthy flavor profiles of this impeccable dish. Lamb was presented three ways: as a sirloin, rack and braised meatball. The sirloin flesh was incredibly soft and cooked to an irresistible medium rare. The rack was lined with a fatty border which added a deep permeating flavor to the lamb. The surprise was a small meatball that was made with braised meat that was very tender and intensely flavorful. The accompaniments of Branson pickles, butterball potatoes, spring onions and baby turnips were nice but were not as successful in rounding out the flavors like the ribeye dish. We ended the evening with some coffee, a warm butter tart with chocolate covered pecans, coffee soaked raisins, and a smoked vanilla ice cream. The tart was sublime with a rich and buttery texture that felt like velvet. I wasn't particularly a fan of the smoked vanilla ice cream as it left a fairly pungent after taste on my tongue. But overall, it was a satisfying dessert that I would order again sans the vanilla ice cream ;) Following the meal, we shared some friendly conversation with the server and had our checked coats retrieved. The experience was pleasant with great service that wasn't overbearing or pushy with up sells and the food overall was mostly up to par with my expectations. Would I come back again? Absolutely! Location/Service: Located in the downtown financial district, right above the TD Tower on Wellington St. Underground parking is available and is free when you eat at the restaurant - make sure you ask your waiter for a complimentary pass. Service was alright - probably because it's Winterlicious, I don't feel the service was as top-notched compared to a regular dine-in. The staff did explain what was being served, so it was a little nice knowing what we are actually eating. Food: Appetizer - foie gras parfait. It was really a parfait style, a bit mushy and soft. But strong foie gras taste and it compliments well with the pie crust. I only wished there was more of it, cause the portion was pretty big. Luckily I used some of the bread as a side spread. Main - ontario beef tenderloin. Cooked medium rare - juicy and not dry. The kale added a nice complimentary taste as it was a bit sour. It would nice if the portion was a little bigger (cause I love to eat beef), but it's winterlicious - so kinda expected. Dessert - sticky toffee pudding. Sticky indeed and very sweet from the combo of caramel and toffee. It was still alright - there's a little bit of raspberry to offset the sweetness. Overall I had a nice time at Canoe. You really need to book in advance for winterlicious and they are a little strict with being on time. But you get a really nice view, nice fancy atmosphere - and with party of 8 and a few drinks, it's quite enjoyable :) read more

Overall the food was good but there isn't really anything I had that I would come back for. So fancy this place doesn't have signage on the building. Once you enter the building, you'll see a sign mounted to the wall by the elevators telling you Canoe is on the 54th floor. There's a bar area that has a separate entrance from the restaurant area. The view from the top is pretty nice and you can see the CN tower if you're sitting on the lower level of the restaurant. This place has a great fine dining atmosphere. The décor is classy and the chairs are comfortable. When you get up from your seat, your napkin is magically folded and placed on the table upon your return. There weren't too many things on the menu that excited me, yet I still wanted to try everything. In addition to the a la cart menu, they have a tasting menu for $100/person. Items on the tasting menu can also be ordered a la cart. The food was good, with the foie gras and the side of cream corn being the most memorable. I read great reviews on some of the desserts, but unfortunately they were no longer on the menu. FOOD Raw Bar $72 - East and West Coast seafood platter (good for sharing 2-3 people) - There were about 10 different things to try on this platter, most of which I couldn't keep track of what they were. I think a little labeling or cheat cheat would be nice instead of asking the waiter about each time again. There was tuna tartare, salmon tartare, scallops with foam, popcorn (which you're supposed to eat after the scallops), shrimp, swordfish, oysters and salmon pate. Northern woods mushroom soup $16 - My friend didn't enjoy the truffle flavors in this soup as much as I did. It was simple, good, but boring. I wouldn't want more than a few spoonfuls of this. Pan Seared Quebec Foie Gras $28 - lavender peaches, Ontario peanuts, and toasted bulrush brioche - The foie gras was done just right and tasted great. I really enjoyed the peanut sauce with crunchy pieces of nuts. The brioche was ok, but found that I rather eat and taste the foie gras on its own and then eat everything else separately. You can share this among 4 people, but realistically, you'd want the entire appetizer to yourself. Even more realistically, you should order 2 and have it as a main. Tea Smoked Duck Breast $43 - Northern Woods mushrooms, pickled wild leek, rapini and 3 grain porridge - I went with the recommended medium rare and it looked beautiful. I'm not sure if I was too stuffed to enjoy this dish by the time I got it, but it was just AOK. Alberta Labm $47 Strawberry BBQ ribs, roasted loin, eggplant, and sumac sheep's cream - My lamb loving friend that ordered this dish loved it. I'm not a lamb lover and thought it was too lamby when I tried a bite. Creamed Ontario Corn and Shallot Rings $8 - This creamy corn side was terrific! It came in a bowl with a pile of husk on top. I didn't even know you can eat husk and I didn't know that eating it could be so delicious. One of my favorites of the night. Desserts $12 - I got to try a bunch of desserts and my favorite of the bunch was the recommended butter tart. The small scoop of ice cream was my favorite part on each of the desserts. -Classic Canoe Butter Tart - smoked vanilla cream, flax seed, nougatine, rye and ginger ice cream. -Milk Chocolate and kernal peanut - 46% milk chocolate, banana butter and caramel ice cream -Chocolate Torte - Okanagan hazelnul, praline and ovaltine ice cream -Roasted Niagara Peaches - Candied violet, chamomile, cream cheese and yoghurt mousse There were many options for red wine by the glass but the only Cabernet Sauvignon was the Lotus Cab for $16. Wanted to like this place more but didn't live up to the reviews. Being from NYC it reminds me of a place that gets hyped up to tourists but the locals know it's overrated. The ambiance is top notch but the food was pretty standard. Got the lamb and while it was presented nicely it really didn't have any flavor and was pretty average. For what this place is supposed to be that was disappointing. On the plus side, again the bar is great and the cocktails are on point. But if you're in town for a visit I'd think there are better places to spend your $ on. read more

Soft bread w/ garlic & olive oil spread 〰 Their garlic spread was very good because I like how garlicky it was simple taste and the bread wasn't hard so you won't have to struggle with it. Coastal Half Dozen Oyster $21 〰 Not a big fan of oyster but tried one regardless which turned out to be better than what I thought. Not an expert in oyster so can't really give much comment on it but oyster eater rated it as average. The size of the oyster was pretty small too. Larded Beef Fillet $57 〰 Of course you expect your beef fillet to be cooked exactly how you wanted it to be when paying such price medium rare is really medium rare that's pink throughout the beef without a red centre. Remained certain level of juiciness and tenderness. My favourite of all. Pacific Halibut $48 〰 The surface of the fish was crispy but inside was still juicy. Perfectly cooked, I had couple fish dishes before that's too dry that was difficult to even swallow. As a poor millennial, we can normally only come here during winterlicious/summerlicious, at least we get a significant pay bump. We came here for 2019 winterlicious in a group of 4 so we were able to try most of the tasting menu. overall amongst the starters, I enjoyed (surprisingly) the green bean salad, which wasn't vegan and had foie gras at the bottom which really added a extra layer of richness and flavor to the refreshing salad. For the main, my favorite was the Pork Jowl two ways and it was simply a really balanced dish. For dessert, I liked the apple cheesecake tart the most, as I really like tarts in pgeneral. Appetizers, we ordered the green bean salad, the roast beef tartare, and salmon cabbage roll. The green bean salad had a nice crunch from the beans itself, and made up for the veggies with the foie gras. My roast beef tartare was good, but I didn't enjoy the seared outer texture of the each piece of beef cubes as it didn't add texture, but did confuse my palette in a unpleasant way. The presentation of the dish also seemed off as the entirety of the tartare and the dish was on one side of the dish, which gave me the impression the star of the dish was missing. The salmon cabbage roll was a good second as the salmon was cured perfectly but it lacked texture, and the outer cabbage layer was harder to cut, and therefore harder to enjoy with the cured salmon stuffing. Main wise, we ordered the strip loin, the pork jowl, and the halibut (not about that vegetarian life). I went with the pork this year as we often get the strip loin in prior years, but boy was it a pleasant surprise. The strip loin main steak was good, but nothing stood out, the steak was cooked perfectly. The dish however did come with a beef croquette, or "osso bucco croquette", which took me by surprised as all croquettes I know of involve mashed potatoes. While it was a pleasant surprise, since the beef was already cooked before formed into croquettes and fried, the beef inside was somewhat dry and lacked seasoning. The halibut was cooked well, and it had a nice char on the outside. The sauce paired well with it, but it didn't blow my taste buds as much as the canoe I'm accustomed to. The Pork Jowl however, did blow my taste buds and my mind. It was cooked 2 ways, one braised (maybe with red wine?) and reminded me of classic french cooking, and the other was similar to pork belly and was cooked similar to Chinese style Cantonese roasted pork, or siu yuk. The siu yuk was really crispy on the outside, but it was not the only component that made the dish really good. The parsnip and the heirloom carrot sauce really brought the dish together. Dessert wise, we got the chocolate cake, the apple cheesecake, and the maple parfait. The maple parfait was delightful and the use of bananas was subtle but can definitely be tasted, and it even caught the fancy of the wife, even though she's normally not a fan of bananas. The chocolate cake was good, not too sweet as it's dark chocolate, but since I'm not a big fan of chocolate flavored stuff, it was simply good. My favorite was the apple cheesecake, which was served in a tart shell. The little pickled/marinated pieces of apple was sweet and tarte and balanced out the sweetness of the cheesecake well. Canoe is a "top table" literally, not just figuratively; on the 54th floor overlooking Lake Ontario, it doesn't get much better. And Canoe doesn't rest on its laurels - it's always working to stay "on top", and it shows. The cuisine is "new Canadian" and takes pains to use so, so many local ingredients. As a visitor, I'm looking for these exact things when dining out: locality, authenticity, and great tasting food, and Canoe never disappoints. Even if you have dinner plans elsewhere, I'd recommend stopping in for a reasonably-priced cocktail ($12 for a Moscow mule, and a huge selection of manhattans starting around $13) with one of the best views of toronto.
