It was our first night in Toronto and we wanted to find a place for dinner that didnt require a reservation. This place was a few blocks away and maybe because it was 9pm on a rainy Sunday, we had no problem getting a seat right away. I ordered their SPICY MARGARITA. It was spicy and so good! For dinner I picked the prawn rice bowl. That, too, was spicy but it was really tasty. It contained 6 prawns covered in some sauce that contained a lot of flavor. I would have licked the bowl. I've visited quite a few times in the past few years as a financial district staple with great happy hour specials and lovely atmosphere. It's also been a reliable spot to be able to book tables for large groups. However, they have poor problem resolution if there are any issues that arise. Their food is all pretty good and drinks are fairly priced. Their staff are what I would call elusive and very no frills--beyond your first order, they're a bit hard to flag down to order additional items, settle bills, or otherwise. We had an incident where my friend ordered an alcohol-free beer, but when received, they had a sip and suspected it had alcohol in it because it tasted like the regular alcoholic version. We asked the staff to confirm if the drink they poured was actually alcoholic beer on tap, or if it was an emptied can of the alcohol-free beer. The staff came back and apologized, saying it was the alcoholic beer and poured from the tap but the order placed was indeed the alcohol-free beer. My friend then requested to have the can for the alcohol-free beer instead of poured in a glass to be safe, because she was pregnant. The staff then realized the gravity of the issue and went to get the can, saying we can keep the other glass. A few minutes later, someone who I presume to be a manager came over to say she had clarified the situation again and that it was actually NOT the alcoholic beer--which at this point we weren't inclined to trust. The manager did not apologize, but instead said that a bit of alcohol is okay when you're pregnant... We didn't say anything or raise a fuss, just smiled awkwardly. We left not too long after, and we were charged for the mistaken beer as well. This experience put a bit of damper on going to this place, as it was a frequent spot we visited for decent happy hour specials. However it's evident that staff do not know how to handle special circumstances, nor do they seem to have high EQ. If you are a person with no dietary needs, no wheelchair or crutches (because it's cramped as hell and the washrooms are located on the 2nd floor), not pregnant, and no allergies, then this place is probably fine. But if you have any of the above, then you should skip it in case of incident. read more

I popped in here for a quick late lunch during the weekday. It's a nice upscale fast-casual restaurant/bar much like Earls, Joeys, etc. The servers were super friendly and nice. Very helpful and pleasant people. I wanted something small, so opted for their pork tacos. You get 3 small pork tacos for $14.75, which is pretty good in terms of value. They were surprisingly meaty, and tasted decent. They would probably make a good sharing item for the table as they were quite salty. Now, if this were a taqueria, I would not be impressed with the tacos. So if you are expecting "proper" tacos, don't order them. Go to a taqueria, lol. But this is a corporate chain pub in a city, whose main goal is to make a large swathe of people happy. So within this context, I think they did a good job. I would totally be ok to come back and try something else another time. I also had a local hazy IPA which was lovely. Overall, it was a good experience and I would go there again. read more

I was in town for the annual TIFF film festival and my hubby wanted to find a place to watch the Raiders game. This sports bar was right next door to my hotel and it fit the bill. I went to meet him between my film screenings, and he looked right at home with all the fellow football fans. The bar has a ton of tvs and each one was tuned to a different game. I was surprised that they'd be showing so many NFL games in Canada, but they were! Note that none of the television sets had the sound on, so don't expect to be able to hear your game. But if you're traveling, you definitely can watch it! Almost everyone in here was wearing sports jerseys, which was cool. I grabbed a stool at the bar and ordered a margarita and the spicy chicken sandwich at the advice of the friendly and charismatic bartender. My margarita was delicious, but it was SO small. Like, where's the booze? It was already served in a teeny tiny glass, but it was 95% ice (see photos). I guess that's Canada for you, but good lord what a ripoff. My chicken sandwich came out of the kitchen quickly, so this is a good spot if you need to dine in a rush. It was hot and fresh, and tasted really good! The chicken was legit spicy, and the chicken breast seemed to be high quality. The bun was a little stale, but I didn't eat it anyway. I enjoyed the fries but it's hard to mess up fries. I do think the food and especially the drinks are overpriced, but just consider it a charge for watching the football games! I'd come back here, but only on game day. read more

This place was delish! We ordered the tandoor chicken pizza, the noodle salad, a grilled cheese, pierogie, and edamame. Everything was on point! The pizza - which was my entree - reminded me of being in Delhi, India. It tasted great. The pierogie was great and my son who tried it for the first time enjoyed it as well. The restaurant itself was busy, but service was still efficient. All of the staff were nice and the waitstaff covered for each other. I loved the team approach! This rowdy public house serves some beautifully crafted food. I was there the other evening for dinner with friends and had a great time. While the restaurant was loud, that's because it's a pub and it was packed full by 6pm. And for good reason, all the food was fresh and delicious, and it looked like art on a plate. We started off with the Red Beet Hummus, an engaging dish both visually and tastefully. Just looking at it, it looked stunning. Tasting it, it was vibrant, and delicious. I followed that up with the #1 Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl. A large bowl filled with a mix of fresh ingredients, and a spicy sauce that caught me off guard in a good way. Service was organized and on top of everything. They had our table ready quickly and responded to our requests even with so many people in the house. Would I come back? Came into Local on a whim for lunch and I will say we for sure lucked out. When first walking in a will say this place in very elegant and was probably the nicest looking restaurant that we ate at during our trip to Toronto. For appetizers we went with the Hawker's Street Curry and the Fully Loaded Crispy Potatoes. We really enjoyed both. The Curry was flavorful and Roti was great. The in-laws ended up enjoying this dish a lot more then expected. They even brought out more Roti when we ran out and still had curry leave over. The Fully Loaded Crispy Potatoes were definitely more upscale then your typical loaded fries or tots. Was a big fan of the shaved Parmesan and Horseradish Aioli. That really took it to the next level. For my entrée Local Fried Chicken with the Hot Honey sauce. I will say the sauce is a lot more sweet then it was hot but still was good. I also liked that they used dark meat chicken just because for me it has so much more flavor. The batter was nice and crispy but my only issue with it was be on some bite it was just batter or barely any chicken. Just a little thick in some areas. I also got the try the Fried Chicken Ramen which was all liked. Nice rich broth and I liked that they served the Fried Chicken on the side so it did get soggy from sitting in the ramen. The bar slowly filled up and the main level was nearly full once games started at 1 pm. Fair variety of beers. A fee craft options on tap plus a bunch of macro options. Many different styles so everyone should be able to find something they'd like. Decent options for whiskey too. Some standouts like Little Book and Kentucky Owl. Food wise, we had the smoked trout dip, the fish and chips, and the regular. All the food was good. My favorites were the dip and the fish and chips. Solid quality for a sports bar. We came here on day 2 since they opened. It was very vibrant and they seated us even though they were busy. We sat by the bar and the waitresses, bartenders and waiters were constantly checking in on us. I hope they keep up with this attentiveness when we return a few months later. Morgan, the bar manager was very nice too. The guava margarita was very good and had a good spice. The pizza was great but I wish they brought it sooner so that it was warmer. It came out slightly cold. The place is huge as you can tell from the picture and has a nice contemporary look. Restrooms are upstairs where there is a smaller seating area and bar.
