At the Heartbreak Chef... We got the Big A** Chicken Sandwich Combo which is a 14$ + 6$ deal that comes with Cajun fries, dip included, and a can of Pop. The restaurant is bare bones, but has a nice bench seating that spans the length of the seating area, a garage door opening to the street, and a small bar area near the kitchen. There is local art on one side of the wall and graffiti style decor on the opposite wall and washroom (which you can pickup one of the provided pens and tagged it yourself). The cajun fries are soft potato wedges coated in chili flakes and paprika. It comes with what looks like the burger sauce as dip and is tangy and finger licking good. Eating at Heartbreak is a messy affair. The portions are great for the price, the chicken is hot and fresh, piled high with coleslaw and sweet pickles on a brioche bun. The owner seems to be the soul (pin intended) cook, served us, did cash, and took care of the guests. Overall, the chicken was crispy, lots of meat, will be back to try their mac and cheese. Great easy bite when visiting Kensington. P.S. if you like super surreal promo videos (their old location) hit up @theheartbreakchef on Insta read more

I've had their chicken sandwich several times now and it smacks every time. Super juicy and crispy chicken, soft bun and just plain tasty. Probably my favourite chicken sandwich place in Toronto. And to top things off the portions are massive. Well worth the cost considering how pricey things are these days. We ordered the Cajun fries this time and it was perfectly cooked. Super fluffy and soft in the middle and crispy on the outside with a strong Cajun kick. The owner is right there working his heart out and you can tell it. They moved to Kensington market from their old location on Bloor and honestly I think they fit the Kensington community vibes perfectly. It scream locally made with a lot of heart. Super friendly, good food, but just be prepared to get your hands a bit saucy. read more

We chose to try this place out given that it was mentioned as being the best fried chicken sandwich place in Toronto on multiple websites. It is a cute eatery in Kensington with dine-in options but also takeout/delivery. They do not automatically include utensils so make sure to ask if you need them! There is zero street parking, so if you're dining in you are going to have to walk or Uber. - Big Ass Chicken Sandwich ($14) and Half Ass Chicken Sandwich ($11): Definitely gigantic portions for the price. The buns were fluffy and held up well. The red cabbage slaw was creamy and delicious. The chicken was... fine. It was deep fried in such a way that the batter wasn't crispy, it was actually kind of tough. For example, for multiple bites, I could not bite through the chicken and when I could, each bite would tear off a much bigger chunk than I wanted (not sure if you can picture what is going on). - Mac and cheese ($10): The rave reviews set my expectations high. But it tastes like normal Mac and cheese. Maybe because I did takeout, but it was not creamy; it had congealed by the time we brought it back to the hotel. There was no garlic flavor. I had to add the dipping sauce intended for the fries on the Mac & cheese in order to add some moisture and flavor -Cajun potato wedges ($6): I'm gonna just state that I have always found potato wedges to be the worst of the fried potato forms, because it just feels like a weirdly shaped baked potato to me (too much potato fluff, not enough crunchy skin). So keeping that in mind, I did not like these. I was expecting tater tots from everyone else's reviews, and I was very sad there were no tater tots. I liked the dipping sauce though, so I drenched my Mac and cheese with it. read more

I stopped by here during a recent visit and the food and service were amazing. The owner greeted us as soon and we entered and took our order. He was super nice! I had the small sandwich, potato wedges, and brustle sprouts. Everything was delicious and HOT. The entire meal was made fresh. My only disappointment was that they were sold out of Mac and Cheese (which he let us know up front). I really wanted to try it. The owner was sincerely apologetic for it and assured me that he would have some if I returned. I don't live in Canada but I plan to return and eat here again. I will also recommend The Heartbreak Chef to anyone I know traveling to Toronto. read more

Apr 27/21: More like a 4.5*! This was an awesome sandwich! The sauce was delicious & tart. The sweet pickles were delicious & the bun was good. AND the chicken! The chicken was done to perfection, crispy, crunchy & fabulous! I took the slaw on the side cause it makes the Sammy too sloppy. Let me say the the Garlic Mac & Cheese was quit likely the VERY BEST M&C I've had. The window server was a very polite young lady that made doing Biz, easy. Two complaints; 1. The bun was too small for the sandwich. 2. The napkins. If you're gonna turn out a sloppy delicious sandwich like yours...get some decent napkins, would ya! 100% do-over! read more

We came in for Minnesota and found this place while walking the streets and are so glad we came. Vibes were immaculate, staff was incredible and super friendly. Food absolutely smacked. Everyone liked what they got. The chicken was the perfect amount of crispy and was both light and dark meat. Easily the best fried chicken I've ever had. Food was affordable and the staff made it so fun for us. Even started playing "Minnesota" by Lik Yachty for us Minnesotans. 100% would recommend, a must stop if you're in the area read more

Hubby and I found ourselves downtown with a free afternoon after an early appointment. So we decided to take baby for a walk to Kensignton Market and grab a bite to eat. We stumbled across this gem after seeing the pictures of the huge fried chicken sandwiches and mac n cheese. Our favorite! We walked in not realizing they hadn't opened yet. The owner was incredibly kind, had us take a seat and get comfortable anyway. He invited us to order anyway but let us know it would be about a 20 minute wait as the oil was just heating up. We were fine with that. The atmosphere was very contemporary. We enjoyed that. We viewed the menu by scanning the QR code and placed our orders. And guys... I dont have any pictures of the food because after ONE bite, hubby and I WENT TO TOWN!! The Mac n cheese was so creamy and cheesy. Had incredible flavor. And the chicken so moist on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. Hubby had the dutty jerk fried chicken sandwhich and I just had to take a bite! It was perfectly spiced! The portions were HUGE! I enjoyed my second half at home for dinner! It started raining very heavily and the owner asked if we preferred the doors closed but we said we liked it open. It was so nice of him to ask! Anyway. I don't usually leave reviews but I was really impressed with this place! We will absolutely be returning! read more

Friend recommended I stop in here, no frills, just solid chicken sandwiches. The folks working there were super helpful in walking through the menu, spice level, ingredients etc. I got the spicier of the two sandwiches and some tots, huge portions, and took some to-go. Ate it at 11pm and was equally pleased. Maybe the best chicken sandwich I've had in years. Cheers. read more

Good solid chicken sandwich. Love the fact that they use white and dark meat so you get a bit of both. I tried the Big ass chicken sandwich and it was massive, with delicious homemade sweet crunchy pickles, cabbage slaw and more. I also got to try out their collaboration with Glory Hole donut chicken sandwich the buns were their original donuts that reminded me of Krispy Kreme donut but better, ooh yeah and don't forget the red sauce that goes with it. I've wanted to try this place not realizing I've passed it numerous times I ordered the big ass chicken sandwich, mac and cheese and tried some of my friend's deep fried brussel sprouts. The big ass chicken Sandwich is HUGE. Its two pieces of breast meat drenched in buffalo sauce topped with coleslaw and pickles. The chicken is soooo tender! The buffalo sauce was tangy and the pickles were sweet and crunchy. The brussel sprouts were good and not over done. I just wish it had slightly more salt. The mac and cheese was good with just the right amount of cheese, not too over powering. I loved the green onions on top great pairing. The chef and owner was nice and patient answering all questions and accommodating my plantbased friend. Overall a great experience just sad, they were sold out of tater tots Visit was on a sunday at 5pm read more

Had the big ass chicken sandwich with mac and cheese combo. $20 including tax. The big ass chicken sandwich was really big ass. There was so much chicken, the bun halves were far from being able to contain them & I couldn't fit the whole thing in my mouth. I don't know why this is even positioned as a sandwich - it'd be better off sold as just fried chicken. That aside the sandwich was good: the chicken was crispy, juicy & tasty & the pickles & purple cabbage slaw were delicious. The buffalo sauce was good. The mac & cheese was pretty cheesy, though the macaroni was a bit too soft. All 5 cheeses they use are quite mild, though, so the mac & cheese doesn't have much character. read more

We had a power blackout last Friday night so we sat outside with some of our neighbours, had a drink and chatted. The chat turned to fried chicken and Andrew and Nonna said how good the fried chicken is at the Heartbreak Chef in Parkdale. It's been in our heads all week so that's where Gord and I picked up supper this evening. We both got three-piece fried chicken dinners ... the dinner came with tator tots and cole slaw. The chicken is boneless and there are two sauces for it ... buffalo and jerk. Gord got his with no sauce and I got jerk sauce on the side. I'm glad I did ... I love jerk sauce and this was too spicy. I'm not a fan of cole slaw so gave mine to Gord and he said it was really good. The tator tots were fun ... they were a bit spicy (but in a good way). The chicken is boneless and tasty. I dipped mine in the creamy Frank's Red Hot and it was good. There was lots of food and we both have leftovers for tomorrow. Jerome was friendly and chatty. Thanks, Jerome! read more

I finally got around to getting a fried chicken sandwich from the Heartbreak Chef and I can assure you I was not disappointed. Aptly titled the Big Ass Fried Chicken Sandwich, this sandwich was one indulgent experience. With two sizeable pieces of fried chicken (one dark, one white), a fresh potato bun, a generous portion of saucy purple coleslaw and some sliced pickles, this was an explosion of flavours (in the best way) and is certainly in my thoughts as being one of the best fried chicken danishes in the city. Make sure to get some extra napkins though, this one gets messy! I also have to note that everyone seemed so friendly; when I walked in, I got an immediate nod and hello from everyone in the back. This seemed like a genuine group of folks that were working hard and putting great care and attention in these sandwiches (and other items)! read more

The Heartbreak Chef has an item on its menu called "The Big Ass Chicken Sandwich". Lemme tell you - there couldn't be a more accurate name for this item. This sandwich is absolutely massive. I'm known amongst my friends for the big portions I eat, but a BACS combo for lunch was all I needed to eat the entire day to sustain me. The sandwich itself was pretty good. Very flavourful, but that comes with a ton of sodium. I found myself chugging water for the rest of the day. The tater tots that come with the combo are awesome. Super crispy, crunchy, and comes with a great spicy mayo for dipping purposes. If I had to say something negative/critical about The Heartbreak Chef, it's that their sandwiches don't travel well from an Uber Eats perspective. That can easily be forgiven, however, given how massive the sandwich is. The potato rolls that this sandwich is built upon have no chance against the pure weight of the fried chicken it tries to contain. Seriously folks - this is a huge sandwich, and I don't recommend going for something like this if you've got a big meeting scheduled for after lunch. I can't imagine myself eating here often (my heart wouldn't be able to handle it), but I'll be back if I find myself craving an epic chicken sandwich. read more

5 stars for the spirit and energy of this small owned business who started out in Parkdale and had to move locations in the middle of the pandemic. Jerome brings style and vision to this small fried chicken joint. The dutty chicken sandwich comes with a pineapple ring and coleslaw in the burger. If you want, and can handle that jerk spice, then that's the sandwich for you. If you cannot, (like me) stick to their tater tots and super cheesy macaroni and cheese, which is perfect for an Instagram cheese pull btw. read more

I love their mac & cheese as well as their fried chicken. Always fresh and consistent delicious taste.

About 20mins wait not bad, but the Mac and cheese was cold.. on a cold windy day I was hopping for my food to be hot.. the chicken isn't seasoned nicely and majority breading. The chicken stayed crispy but needed more seasoning. Dutty burger was a good portion but probably wouldn't order this again as the chicken wasn't good on its own. Cold slaw was bland. I ordered the dutty chicken burger $11.99 Chicken& waffles $14.99 Mac& cheese $7.99 $37 total +tip Ultimately I think other chicken burger spots like rudy or chick-fil-a have better flavour. read more

I make it a personal mission to try all the chicken sandwiches so I had to give Heartbreak Chef a try! The sandwich comes with 2 pieces of thicccccc chicken. Make sure you have wetnaps or a nearby sink when you eat it cuz it get real messy! It's a similar size to other chicken sandwich places, though I did expect it to be much bigger because of all the pics on their IG profile. The chicken was a smidge salty to me but we all have our preferences with that. As for the mac and cheese, if you like yours more chunky rather than smooth, then this is for you! I think I would have preferred if it was more smooth and consistent throughout. read more

What a delicious sandwich. I had the Dutty Chicken Sandwich and the flavours were outstanding. Excellent jerk seasoning, perfect fried chicken, nice slaw... They provide a warning on Uber Eats that it is "very spicy" but I thought "pfffft, how spicy could it be?!?" Let me tell you, this mother fucker is SPICY. It is now five hours after eating the sandwich and my back mouth can confirm that it is equally as spicy on the way out. Came here on a Saturday for the $5 chicken sandwich special. I was surprised that there was a huge line up. I waited at least an hour and a half. Ya'll. I'm a rambling fool when it comes to uh, anything. But I'm somewhat at a loss for words to describe the OUTSTANDING quality and care that Jerome puts into his food. My partner and I showed up absolutely ravenous at HBC. Our original plan was to check out another place (she was craving vegetarian roti), but we didn't even know if they were open, and they weren't answering their phone. WHO THE !@#$ does that?! People who don't wanna sell food, that's who! IN A PANDEMIC???! After salivating over the amazing pics of all this GORGEOUS food on Instagram, I convinced her to go to The Heartbreak Chef. I mentioned she's a vegetarian, yes? She's only recently considered that she should perhaps add some chicken back into her diet and had some earlier in the week, with no major complaints. Well,...in her words: "NO REGRETS!" She had one of the chicken pieces on the side, and it was STILL A LOT OF CHIMKEN. We each ordered The Big Ass Chicken Sammich, and she got the SECRET MENU version: coleslaw was replaced with Mac 'n Cheese. We also ordered tater tots. HOLY !@#$, ya'll! Tater tots are boring af, right? These are doused in cajun seasoning and come with dip! I am of the opinion that only sub-par food requires dip to make it taste better...HOWEVER...the tots are UH-MAZING! They are so crispy and flavourful! The dip is awesome! (but they really don't need it!) Okay...these sammiches... I DID NOT KNOW HOW THE !@#$ I WAS GOING TO EAT THIS MASSIVE AF SAMMICH. It is the BIGGEST sammich I HAVE EVER SEEN. And honestly? $11.99 is a STEAL. You get TWO MASSIVE fried chicken thighs. THEY ARE THE WHOLE SAMMICH! It's a chicken sammich with "some" coleslaw and pickles. Coleslaw: ON POINT! Crunchy and tangy, not loaded with tons of mayo, because GROSS. The pickles were crunchy, sweet and tangy and added fantastic contrast. This is the messiest meal I've ever had in my whole life. I was covered! In slaw and mayo and juices and everything! The messier the better, right? ;) This chicken legit made me cry. I'm not even joking. It is JUICY, incredibly crispy, not greasy in the least, packed with flavour and a nice little kick from the buffalo sauce. P*PEYE'S WHO????!!!??? (P*peye's supports Trump, so GTFO with that ish). Jerome, if you put out a menu item of chicken tenders, YOU WOULD SLAUGHTER P*PEYE'S! This is seriously high quality food made with so much love and such care, it's astounding. $35 for all this food (plus a bottle of water) was an outrageous deal when you consider the massive amount of food. And again: QUALITY. I'm a very proud food snob and have been cooking since I was 4. I am very picky about where I eat because most places are TRASH. HBC is not trash. It is the opposite. It is LOVE and QUALITY and PRIDE. Jerome LOVES food and it shows. I swear to god, I may visit every week. Worth the trip from south 'Sauga and then some! And I hate Toronto LOL! Oops, look at that. I rambled. Not sorry. Jerome, if you're reading this, when we get married, we are hiring you to cater, ok? Thanks :D PS. Wunderbar IS the best chocolate bar, period. read more

Came by on the weekend after randomly seeing a post about their chicken sandwiches on instagram. Boy, was it worth the drive! We got one of each of the signature sandwiches - Big Ass Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Dutty Chicken. The sandwiches were huge! The original sandwich had see really big pieces of chicken that were so juicy. I actually really enjoyed the slaw that accompanied the sandwich because it's crunchy and cut through very nicely. The Dutty sandwich was not as spicy as I expected but this was a good thing. The jerk sauce was so flavorful with a hint of spice so you could actually taste all the flavors in the sauce rather than being overpowered by spiciness. It's no wonder Jerome gives you a huge stack of tissue because you're going to need it. Thankfully we had a baby in the car so we had lots of wet wipes because you're going to need some if you have them! read more

It should of been 5 stars. Had the big chicken sandwich that's spiced with jerk sauce and the Brussels. The sodium level in the jerk sauce completely ruined the experience. It was really salty and overpowered the other flavours such as the cabbage and spice...not sure if they're using a store jerk paste or it's made in house. Based on concentration of that sodium it tasted similar to a jerk paste. Outside of that the quality of ingredients it was very good but unfortunately it wasn't the best experience. Brussels was tasty nice sweet and tangy favour not over fried. Might be willing to give it a try in the future and try a different sandwich. read more

We love the fried chicken here. SO GOOD!!! The sandwiches are *very* tasty, if very messy. Believe them that the dutty sandwich is *spicy.* The first time we ordered, our food came with very good potato wedges. Since then, they've switched to "Cajun tater tots" which are pure grease and made me feel sick to my stomach. Twice. I was hoping this was a temporary switch due to supply or something, but the item persists on the menu. I'm sure they keep it because people like them? I wish they would offer both. read more
