    Truffle fries
    Linette S.

Came here on a late Friday night for dinner. Service was great and attentive. We had the truffle fries and Brussel sprouts with bacon bits to start. The Brussels were delicious and packed with flavor. The truffle fries were okay - the truffle gives off an after taste that lingers in your mouth. For the main entree, I had the almond chicken tenders with butter Buffalo dipping sauce. Everything on this plate was delicious. We wanted dessert, but they had ran out of brownies and cookies. I ended up getting a scoop of ice cream with caramel.

Again, looking for someplace in the area to grab dinner at while we were here on a business trip. Checked the reviews and this location came highly recommended and I have to agree, the food was exceptional. The ambience is very laid-back and casual. They do have a bar you can sit at or high tops, as well as booths and tables. The music is a little loud inside so you will have to speak up if you are there with a larger group of people. They have an eclectic menu with a little bit of everything, we opted to go with the sirloin rice bowl. By far probably one of the better things that I've eaten in a very long time. Love the fact that the rice was sushi rice served with ginger, a beet, slaw, avocado, cucumber, and sirloin that was very well cooked. Our server was adorable and very attentive and truly just enjoyed our experience here

Almond crusted chicken tenders, Buffalo sauce, Dijon mustard

A great little spot to go if you're in the area. All the food had unique and distinct flavors but tasted fresh. The Brussel sprouts were delicious with the bacon bits. I wasn't crazy about the Parmesan truffle fries, it had a flavor I didn't quite like as an aftertaste but the fries themselves were good. They have drink specials/happy hours in the evening that I took advantage of with the social punch, I really enjoyed the drink as it was refreshing and couldn't even tell it was an alcoholic drink. The tenders blew me away with how well they were coated but they still almost tore apart so easily. The dips were an excellent compliment to the tenders as well as each other. I'd recommend getting the Buffalo sauce, Dijon, and their house sauce and mixing the latter 2 with the Buffalo when dipping, adds an extra flavor.

I came here last weekend to celebrate my anniversary with my boyfriend. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really nice, & everyone was very friendly. I ordered the almond crusted chicken tenders and got a side of truffle fries. The chicken unfortunately didn't have any flavour, and the fries had an odd aftertaste. I did ask for a side of garlic aioli, which made both dishes 10x better. I will come back, but try something else on the menu. My boyfriend ordered their bacon cheeseburger and liked it, but agreed that the truffle fries weren't that great (note: if you want the best truffle fries, go to Cactus Club!). The waitress took my leftovers and went to pack them up for me, but accidentally threw them out. She came over right away and apologized for her mistake and said that she placed a new order for me and will have it packed up ASAP. I honestly appreciated the honesty and know mistakes happen, but a whole new meal out of it wasn't necessary (although gladly accepted & eaten the next day!). Also - ordered a Caesar and it was good. The rim was a bit on the spicy side.

Came here for a surprise birthday for a friend - warm and cozy environment, very casual so perfect for friendly get-togethers. They easily accommodated all 8 of us. Only down-side was that we waited a very long time for them to take down our main orders after apps, but probably because they wanted to give us time to chat. Food was okay - very standard for a casual dining joint like Union Social. Was not expecting excellence and I wasn't shocked nor let down by the quality. Overall, if I were to come here again it would be because of a need to accommodate a larger group, not for the food!

    Nice wood tables and booth

Our flight was delayed coming into Toronto two hours so it was a bit tricky finding something still open till 11 pm on a weekday night for dinner (8 pm in the Pacific time zone we left). We were delighted with the wood trimmed tables and comfortable booths. The fish and chips was really good--with the haddock properly seasoned and loved the light batter. The burger and fries were great as well. Wonderful stop on vacation!

Not a great picture and not a great garlic shrimp taco. Pretty standard.

Basically I felt like I was in a bar eating bar food. I guess that's what a gastropub is supposed to be, but it didn't really seem anything special. Maybe my expectations were misaligned. I had the Social Dragon Roll which just didn't seem fresh for sushi. It was sketchy at best. Flavorful, just not what I would expect in the sushi department. That's what I deserve ordering sushi at a bar. I also ordered the Garlic Shrimp Tacos which were better. It was enough for a light meal and I enjoyed it. But, it was what I would expect at a bar, not a good tex mex spot.

We arrived here for a late dinner tonight at 8:00pm, and the place was hopping. This establishment has a very modern look with wooden walls and tall ceilings. There's a dining room to the left, and bar area to the right, all very open. Our server, Trixie, was absolutely fantastic, asking us if this was our first visit (it was) and telling us a bit about the place. The menu isn't that big but had lots of interesting choices. We ordered the buffalo chicken taco appetizer and bacon cheddar burger. While we waited they brought over a complimentary deep fried wonton which was hot and very tasty. It came with a fire sauce which added a nice kick to it. The entrees arrived within 20 minutes and were served piping hot. The burger was perfect and the fries were delicious, being hot, crispy, and flavorful. The buffalo chicken tacos had a nice fresh spicy taste. You can tell these folks really care about the presentation of the food. While we dined, Trixie checked in on us, making sure we were always doing alright. She made some nice small talk with us and made us feel very welcome. We ate half of our plates and doggie bagged the rest as we were in the mood for dessert. We chose the cookies and ice cream; 3 freshly baked cookies served warm and vanilla bean ice cream drizzled in caramel with chocolate chips. What a fantastic dessert, we really enjoyed the mix of warm and cold sweetness. What a great dining experience. 5 Star Food, and 5 Star Service from Trixie!

My husband and I had dinner here recently and for a chain restaurant it was pretty good. It's similar to a Moxie's or Kelsey's in my opinion, but I feel the food here is better. I had the Candy House Salad ($11.98) and added BBQ grilled chicken to it for an additional $4. The salad consisted of mixed greens (a real mixed greens, not just romaine and iceberg, although it had too much romaine for my liking - but thankfully no iceberg!), mango, roasted red peppers, feta cheese, and figs. The menu said it contained "sugared walnuts" but I didn't see or taste any in my salad :( The dressing was a maple vinaigrette. The added chicken was real breast meat. The portion wasn't too generous, but it was acceptable. Overall, the salad was good. I liked the mix of ingredients. Despite the word "candy" in its name,it wasn't too sweet (although maybe it's because I was missing the sugared walnuts). Portion-size was good. It was filling for a dinner. So on the menu it says you can make any salad "a Wozny" for an additional $5. I asked the server what this meant and he says it means "almond-crusted chicken tenders" Apparently, there is a regular customer who comes there and always orders his Caesar salad with almond-crusted chicken tenders and his last name is Wozniak, so they put it on the menu in his honour, lol. Sounds interesting, I might have to try it next time! My husband had the BBQ Short Ribs with Cheddar-Chive Biscuit ($19.98). It came with a side of spiced carrots, and it had a huge pile of fried onion strings on it. I had some of the onion strings and they were excellent. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal. I didn't have any of the short ribs, but I saw him cutting it and it looked so soft and tender, like he didn't really need a knife! Our server was Charlie and he was good. Nice place. The customers skew a bit on the younger end (at least it did on the Saturday night that we were there). Lots of young couples on dates, I noticed. It's in a strip mall, so there is lots of free parking.

I did try the lemonade they had once, but to be honest, it doesn't quite fit my palate. The lemonade has some sort of seasoning in it. The bread was fresh, soft, and sturdy.. and the patties were flavourful. I'm not a vegetarian but I was very satisfied with them and happy I chose this over chicken or beef options. Fresh desserts for a reasonable price. (btw, there is no special discount if you order large quantities of an item). The coffee brew was strong the way I like it, but way too strong for my parents. I have fond memories of eating veal sandwiches. My dad use to get these long veal sandwiches from a…read morefood truck that would stop by his workplace years ago. He brought one home and I devoured it. The bun was soft, the veal was breaded and tender, the marinara sauce was fresh, and it had onions, peppers, and mushrooms that made it the best sandwich. He bought them for me late in my high school and all through my undergraduate years. I moved away. He retired. Veal sandwiches died. Coming back to the GTA, the best veal sandwich I have had is from California Sandwiches. This location is the closest one to my workplace. On Saturday, I had to go into the office and stopped by this location to grab a bite before getting down to work. This location is on Dixie, just north of the 401. You expect tired, hungry truckers around this area on a Saturday. Then, you have folks like me. I wanted a veal sandwich and was hungry. Parking in front of the eatery is limited. I got a spot out of the possible five available. There is also a back entrance where there is more parking. I walked in. There was a woman ahead of me ordering three sandwiches. I already knew what I wanted. This California Sandwiches looks dated from the outside, but is pretty decent inside. I finally got to place my order for a veal sandwich with mushrooms. Technology-wise, the woman took my order down on small pieces of paper. The only modern thing seemed to be the debit machine. Judging by the sign where it said it accepted cash, scribbled in pen underneath was debit. I was armed with both and paid with cash. Everyone there seemed to be Italian. I liked the homey vibe. She asked if I wanted anything else. I got a bottled diet Dr. Pepper. I found out later on that there was San Pellegrino. Oh, well. I'll get that next time. This California Sandwiches is a bit different. You can buy bottles of marinara sauce to take home. Fish and chips are on the menu. If you can fit poutine in your tummy with your sandwich, it's available. Finally, if you feel like pasta, you can get some here. I loved all the choices. It took a bit of time to get my order. There were three orders ahead of mine. Finally, my sandwich was ready. The woman who prepared asked whether I was dining in. I was. No tray. Just the sandwich wrapped in paper was handed to me. I loved all of it! The woman called me sweetie when she handed me my sandwich. It was endearing. I happily sat down and looked forward to chowing down. Why do I love California Sandwiches? The veal is larger than the bun. I opened my sandwich up and felt so happy looking at such beauty. It came with lots of napkins. You need all of them! I took my first bite. I was in heaven. The veal was tender. The breading was perfect. It was light and yummy. I loved the marinara sauce with little chunks of onion. Finally, all those sliced mushrooms got my seal of approval. The yummy bun held everything together. Some have complained that it's expensive to get a sandwich here. With taxes, my sandwich with mushrooms and a bottled drink came up to $14.50. Considering that my sandwich was huge, packed with goodness, and I didn't eat anything until dinner, it's all worth it to me. It does get messy eating this sandwich. After I was done, I washed my hands in the women's washroom. It has two stalls. It was clean. It's dated, but everything works. I'd come back here again for another yummy veal sandwich. It's good reliving good memories while creating new ones. (169)
