Canje is easily one of the best restaurants I've ever been to! It has quickly become a go-to for special occasions, when friends are in town, or random date-nights. My boyfriend loves spicy food, so it was a no-brainer for him. I don't handle spicy food very well, but I'm still able to eat here and leave full! There is free parking on site in the lot and a valet option, as well as street parking nearby, so anyone bringing a car has a bunch of options. We found a spot immediately (although it was the last one available in the lot). I highly recommend making a reservation, because Canje is always busy. I have been able to walk in before and snag bar seating, but if you want to sit down at a regular table and have a party larger than 2 people, you'll most likely need a reservation! As for the food, to be honest, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We always start with the ceviche and the pink pineapple. The sauce in both of these dishes is absolutely delicious and could very well just be its own meal Not pictured are the beef patties. These were SO good, and the only downside was it comes with just 2 and they're pretty small. We were a party of 4, so we had to each eat half of one. Definitely worth getting 2 orders of these so that everyone can enjoy one fully! Also not pictured is the Haitian Griot, which was so well-cooked it just melted into our mouths. Then, we got the wild boar pepperpot with a side of roti. Highly recommend the roti so that you can soak up all the sauce!! Incredibly flavorful and so worth it. To round out the mains, the jerk chicken is always a show-stopped. As someone who doesn't handle spice well, I can only have a few bites of the interior meat (no skin). The chicken is marinated perfectly for 2 days, making it extremely flavorful. In terms of spice, it's a solid 7 or 8 out of 10. Our server brought us complementary gelato when she saw us sweating from the jerk chicken spice, which honestly felt so good after the chicken. We rounded out the meal with Cassareep Ice Cream for dessert. This dessert is such a weird mix of flavors that works so well. I've never had anything else like it! Absolutely horrendous. We were so excited to check out Canje, but it was a failure from the very start. We checked in for our anniversary dinner and were seated in the main dining area of the restaurant, which was so loud we literally couldn't hear each other. Our server took over 10 minutes to come to our table. At that point, we asked to be moved to a quieter area, which ended up being the next room over. A marginal improvement, but at least there was a bench where we could sit together side-by-side. Our new server mentioned us moving, we explained it was because of the noise, and he said, "Oh, I totally get it. I can't hear anything in there either." Why on earth do you have a dining room where people 18 inches apart can't hear each other? He took our order and insisted we place the entire order upfront so the kitchen could pace the meal. We reluctantly agreed, and based on us saying we were "average hungry," he suggested a specific number of dishes. It turned out to be 2x the amount we could eat. We also ordered a bottle of wine. About 20 minutes later, another person dropped off all of our appetizers at once. No wine. When we finally flagged our server down, he said he assumed we wanted the wine with our entrees. What? He also explained that they serve the meal as three courses, meaning all appetizers at once, followed by all entrees. Nothing he described as spicy had any heat, the beef patties were completely greasy, and overall the food was awful. And yes, the entrees arrived before the bottle of wine, too. By the time dessert came around, we asked to cancel it. Our heads were throbbing from the noise, and that bottle of wine that eventually showed up was unpalatable. Not even half consumed, we left it behind. It's been a very long time since I've had nothing good to say about a restaurant, but that's the case here. I can't believe it's taken me this long to review Canje! I've been a few times now, and the food and service are consistently excellent. Being from South Florida I'm used to bold Caribbean flavors, and there aren't many spots in Austin that deliver on that but Canje absolutely does. Located on the east side, they offer parking which is always a plus in this area. The interior is modern with vibrant tropical touches. Just a heads up it can get loud inside so if you're looking for a quiet intimate dinner this might not be the best fit. Now, the foodyou can't go wrong with the jerk chicken. It's flavorful, spicy, and hearty enough to share. On a recent visit, I decided to branch out and try the wild boar, and it did not disappoint. It was rich, satisfying, and paired perfectly with the roti and cod fritters we ordered. I washed it all down with a frozen hurricane cocktail, which tied everything together nicely. The ambience is great and the food is also a 10/10 we got the beef patties which were filled with tender, juicy beef filling, and the wrapper is closer to an empanada than a traditional beef pattie. What a trip! No, literally. Felt like I was transported to the islands. Beware of the spice! I feel like many dishes have varying levels of spice. *PLEASE* ask your server if you don't want medium or even super spicy. Be explicit! (They told me the jerk chicken was super spicy and the beef skewers). We ordered the pink pineapple (spicy bites), ceviche (perfect), pork with bok choy (spicy bites), and fish (very spicy). Regardless, we are still glad we came and tried Canje. We likely won't be back but we are glad we tried it. We did read many reviews here and on Google before dining. Really, only people mentioned that the jerk chicken was spicy. But I think more dishes have some heat. (It does disappear, but still worth noting). Many reviews mentioned how "amazing" the pink pineapple was. This did have some unexpected heat. The ceviche was great and I would definitely order again. We ended the night with something not from the dessert menu - we recommend you try it as well. Order the sweet plantains side as your dessert. Delightful. Not a place for vegetarians. They claim that the goal is family style, but the portions are so tiny and the prices are crazy. Avocado escabeche, absolutely delicious, but they don't even use a full avocado and charge $12. I mean talk about an up charge on that! And it was enough only for one person to eat. They claim they can make their meat dishes vegetarian, but it's omitting the meat and price stays the same. Their wagyu curry that costs $28 for the wagyu is $28 without the wagyu and only potato and cabbage. Like what? So sad because so much potential. My friend RAVES about Canje so we decided to finally make a reservation and give it a try. I lived in trinidad and tobago for a year so I had expectations for the food! The first thing I want to point out is the service. Every single server was so so friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help. I had a lot of fun talking to our waitress. I came with 3 other friends and we decided to do family style to try more items on the menu. We got 2 appetizers and they were both delicious. I'm not a fan of ceviche normally since I don't like raw seafood but man oh man. This was delicious!! The flavors all together topped with peanuts was a special touch. The beef suya is a must get. The meet is tender and it is seasoned to perfection, drooling as I write this. We got 2 curries, pepperpot, sweet potato dish, and 2 rotis to share and it was judt the right amount. Everything was so flavorful & delicious. I would order all these dishes again. But was it authentic? I'm not sure....but was it good? YES. We started with the Ceviche, Grilled Prawns, and Pineapple & Melon Salad--each dish bursting with fresh, tropical flavors. For the main course, the Wild Boar Pepperpot with Guyanese Style Roti was hands-down our favorite! The Haitian Griot with Fried Sweet Plantains was another standout--the crispy, tender pork and caramelized plantains were a match made in heaven. I called and the person on the phone was so kind and did everything to find room for my last minute reservation. We were seated at the bar, which I prefer and the bar servers were wonderful. We come to Canje a few times each year. A top 10 favorite spot in Austin of ours. We were here in September and it did not disappoint. Our favorite dishes are consistent. Our go-to is the ceviche and the wild boar with roti, SO good, you must try. it The chef brought out a couple of things for us to try which was a super nice surprise. The space seems small and very packed in. I feel like the wait staff has a hard time moving around and delivering food. It also makes it VERY loud. What a delight experience! Our friends have been raving about this place for a long time so we finally joined them for dinner this week. As soon as I walked in I was faced with a beautiful space full of Caribbean colors and patterns. We were seated at a long table with another party but they set up decor separating the spaces so it still felt private. The servers seemed super proud of their menu and were very helpful with helping us select our food. I ordered the hibiscus iced tea which was very strong and well worth the $3. For appetizers, we ordered the Jamaican Bun and Cheese, the Amberjack Ceviche, and the Beef Patties. The buns were light and fluffy, the ceviche was fragrant (although could've used a bit more lime), and the beef patties were served with a very delicious chili sauce. We were charged $32 for 4 beef patties, which I thought was absolutely ridiculous, but most of the other things on the menu were relatively reasonable. For our main course we ordered the West Indian Curry, Wild Boar Pepperpot, and the Jerk Chicken. The Jerk Chicken was by far my favorite, although I highly recommend ordering all the entrees we chose. It was a little spicy but the flavors were outstanding and the chicken was oh so moist. Surprisingly, my favorite part of the dinner was the sides. Guyanese-Style Roti, Pepper Rice, and Fried Sweet Plantains were all SO delicious. Parking lot- check I mean what can I say when I go try a place in the downtown/east Austin area and there's a parking lot with decent amount of parking spaces. Just go! I honestly did not read reviews or look at the menu before I went. I simply trusted my friend who picked the location. A lot of the ingredients were foreign to me and I didn't know what I was getting into. There were 4 of us so we were able to order a lot of dishes to try. Here is my highlight, the dishes not mentioned are just straight forward, nothing wrong/bad. The callaloo dip with the plantain chips was amazing! Beef patties were not patties (in burger sense) but a fried "empanada" filled with beef. I don't know how i felt about it. The west Indian curry with wagyu was not as intense with spices as I had anticipated, the wagyu was tender. Not a bad dish. Roti was on point, not greasy like other places. Jerk chicken has quite a kick (spicy). Saved the best for last, the cassareep ice cream. I'm not much of an ice cream person, generally don't order ice cream or buy ice cream at the store. My friends decided to order this. The first bite was hmm, interesting. The second bite was, wow I'm in love! The ice cream had a richness that wasn't heavy or dense, oh and then all together in one bite with the puffed crispy rice and pepitas, it was just perfect!! All the textures! Second time coming here. The first time was good, but I was having incredible migraines that the noise level did not help, so I couldn't give it a fair review. Now, I can at least confidently say this place is ridiculously loud ALL THE TIME. Service is generally good, but the ambience of noise that bounces back from the walls and windows makes it hard to hear the waiter. Be prepared to always yell. But the waiters made sure to include our teetotalers with nice non alcoholic shooters. Very sweet! At the very least, the food outclasses the ambience to the point where I'd still highly recommend coming. Family style works here because trying everything is so fun when everything tasted GREAT. Major shoutouts to the griot, jerk chicken, and grilled prawns. Roti is always a must. Pictures included! After being here twice, I can confidently say Canje is delicious. Based in Guyana (country in South America with cultural connections to Caribbean) the food is a mix of tropical island flavors with different textures. As a vegetarian, I appreciate there are a lot of choices for me. We first started off with Jamaican Bun and Cheese which was a spiced version of dinner rolls that is served with almost a cheese pimento dip with red pepper relish on top. The rolls were so fluffy and soft with nice spice/bite and so good on its own to be honest I don't think it needed the smoked cheddar/pepper relish. I actually felt the relish detracted from the bun because the bun had so much flavor on its own. We then had smoked avocado escabeche which was delicious - silky smooth avocado with brightness and acidity from what it was marinated in with crunch of the pumpkin/pomegranate and pickled onions. For main as vegetarian, I had sweet potato which was on a bed of crispy coconut flakes (coconut choke as it is called) served with black beans, cheese, and cilantro on top. It was yummy with great flavor but a little on small side if you're hungrier. I got it with a side of pineapple hot sauce as I love food with more kick and it was perfect. My husband had the Pepper fish which he found delightful with the perfect amount of spice, but not overwhelmingly spicy that he couldn't appreciate the fish itself. For dessert we had the Cassaeep Ice Cream. The ice cream itself was delicious texture and I love dark chocolate, but I wasn't big fan of cassareep which is almost like molasses but a little more bitter than I normally would like. I did enjoy the passion fruit and puffed rice with pumpkin seeds on top. Make sure to get a reservation on Open Table! Even the bar seats are reserved ahead of time. We sat on the patio which is shaded and had fans which was nice. Parking is free! I went to Canje for my coworker's birthday and had an amazing experience and was glad I got to try their fixed menu. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, which was perfect for a party. However, it does tend to get loud and hard to hear your neighbors. I would not recommend for a quiet dinner. When it comes to food, the West Indian Curry (especially with the Roti) and the Jerk Chicken are both delicious. They use great combinations of spices so that the flavors are bold but not overpowering. The cocktails were also excellent - since I love passion fruit, the first dance cocktail is always my go-to. The servers were super friendly and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Canje also offers a free valet which is super convenient when parking can be a challenge in that area . It was nice that there is parking at the restaurant so we don't have to find parking on the street or pay for it. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful. Only cons are it's kinda loud and you sit right beside another table or two, so not great if you want to have conversations. The food was great - not a single dish we didn't like. It was seasoned to perfection and the flavors were spot on. The only thing we were not crazy about was the dessert, but that's just because we didn't like the salted cream. The atmosphere is great here and service is amazing. They have a dog friendly patio that we loved. But the food was just not to my taste.. we had the boar stew which was super flavorful but too Christmas tasting to me, the avocado escabeche tasted too smokey. Like weird flavors all around and everything we ordered I was like bleh. I can't remember what my drink was and it was not that good either. We finally got to try one of the best restaurants in Austin and it surpassed expectations! It was our anniversary and we let them know and all the staff signed a very sweet card for us. Our waiter was incredible and knowledgeable we learned a lot and he took such good care of us! We never had to ask for refills he was always there. The environment was warm and swanky but really good vibes and music as well as great decor. The food was of course the main show. They recommend 2 in each section so we followed suit. Tucked into the ceviche and Jamaican bun with cheese Gruyère and they were unbelievable and delicious. For the main we had the Haitian griot which we'd never had before the meat was tender and slow cooked it was stellar as well as the jerk chicken being one of the best seasoned I've ever had and i was recently in Jamaica! The pepper rice and root were perfect compliments i can't wait to try more on my next visit. read more
