Great Views!! I came here on an end of the year jetski journey. Launched at oneida shores and rode across lake on a fantastic fall day. I stopped for a cocktail but I stayed for an early dinner. The bartender/waitress was so friendly. She greeted with warmth and was inviting. I sat outside even know the bees were crazy that day (I think it was the heat in October) . The bartender had know probably making her way outside to serve. The menu is extensive tons of selections. The food was great. I ordered fries with a cheese sauce, Pulled pork nachos, mozzarella sticks and the chicken sandwich. Everything was excellent. Try the pork nachos they were piled high with a sweet and tangy taste. Went later in a Friday and everything was delicious. Our server "T" was great. I had the Greek chicken gyro sandwich and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Chicken was well marinated, tzatziki homemade, fresh veggies and pita. My husband had the fried chicken BLT- the chicken was pounded thin and perfectly breaded. My son had the lasagna- it was huge and fed him for lunch the next day too. We have a cottage in town and will definitely be eating here every time we're in for the weekend. read more

I've reviewed Canal View in the past but I guess it has been so long that Yelp has forgotten as I am being prompted for a new review. I love Canal View so I'll happy do another one. Both the food and the view are great! All the Italian dishes are good but Chicken Caprese which is a light wine sauce with chicken and greens that something unique if you are tired of the old standby of pasta and sauce. The fried haddock and Haddock Oscar are great choices on the weekend and just about anything is bound to become a favorite choice. They've got both indoor and outdoor seating and are doing a good job with their Covid precautions and this is one of the few places I am willing to eat inside. They've also got take-out down to a science so if you don't feel comfortable eating in, the meal will be just as good in the safety of your own home. read more

I'm going to have to admit that this review will be tinged with a bit of nostalgia, as my family has been enjoying the Canal View for quite some time. Most people familiar with the Sylvan Beach area instantly think about the amusement park, the beach, and some mainstays like Eddie's. However, if you venture down past the park and past the Crazy Clam you'll find one of the best places to get a meal in Central New York. Let me run you through a great meal here: *Start with the Bam Bam Shrimp and a cup of their clam chowder. The shrimp is admittedly a close relative of the bang bang shrimp found at Bonefish Grille, but is done just as well, if not better. Crispy with a sauce that has a nice kick. There is plenty to share with 3-4 people. The chowder is creamy and never disappoints. *Enjoy some of the warm bread they bring out to the table while waiting for the rest of your meal. *Order a piece of haddock. Like it fried? It will be very lightly breaded and fried with no grease. Flaky and soft - it is cooked to perfection. Like it broiled? Try it in their garlic butter or in the dill sauce - both are great. The fish is soft and flaky and the sauces are tasty. Sides are pretty typical - french fries, baked potato, or rice. You can also do a salad if that tingles your taste buds. *Finish off the meal with a homemade Italian dessert or some of their soft ice cream at their in-house ice cream stand. You will be full, but luckily you can walk along the canal or along the shores of Oneida Lake while you let your meal digest. If it's a nice summer night out, bonus. Whether you are a visitor or live in CNY, you really should give Canal View a try! Oh yeah, if you want to say hi to the owners and tell them how much you enjoyed your evening, they can usually be found helping with host duties, taking your check, or helping behind the bar. I realize that all the reviews were very positive, but I'm sorry to say I found the food average and over priced. The location was nice and the ambiance was good and I loved the history on the walls. But, I don't go to a restaurant for the history lessons. Bottom line: Over Priced and Average food. (Me: BLT & Fries with an Arnold Palmer. Wife: Speedy with Fries and a Club Soda. Son: Cup of Wedding soup followed by a Fried Seafood platter. Was over $60. Got charged for every refill and almost $4 for extra bacon.) Too much $ for what we got. This was our2nd visit to the Canal View Cafe and it is consistently Great. I gave 5 stars because great help and consistently excellent food in this Covid era is very tough for a business to do. The Haddock and scallops fish was perfect, Rubin sandwich great also. It was a Saturday night and always tricky maintaining excellence. Lastly ambience is original. refreshing and very comfortable. I remember it like it was yesterday, 3 guys with a toilet, on tubes, paddling up the canal, throwing tootsie rolls at the crowd. Called themselves the "Unstinkables". I reach for one of the hundreds of tootsie rolls being thrown, then...WHACK, WHACK, WHACK...3 bees...1 young man...many tears. Pretty sure that toilet sunk that day. Character building day for many it seemed...me especially. Took a date here once in 1996. Shared a Chicken Parm. and a Carafe (3) of Chianti in one of the back booths (VERY comfortable)...over looking the Lake AND Canal. Very quiet back there some evenings, and one of the best views in town. Excellent wine selection and really don't think anyone else in town can even compare. You can't beat the location of this restaurant. Right by the canal on one side and the lake on the other side. It is a large restaurant and always busy. There is outdoor seating. There are not many healthy vegetable options on the menu. I ordered the broiled haddock and there were no healthy side options that I could have with it. The fish was overcooked and not much flavor. Needless to say that it had no nice presentation. The Italian style greens were good!!! read more

Canal view Cafe is a joke they say they are family friendly it's a lie if you have small kids don't go we just went to have a nice meal and the baby was fussy because he has been in the car for awhile and hasn't been able to run around as my family and I were leaving the older lady at the door asks us to not come back maybe until next year when my son is older because he was being to Disruptfull And the only thing that was hot that came out was soup and French fries. Tonight I had the extreme displeasure of being berated and scolded by a wait staff member. All because I finally spoke up to get my name put down for a table after getting passed by for 10 minutes by the owner. The staff member humiliated and embarrassed me. I had been going to this restaurant for decades as my family has a long history at the Beach. We were visiting the area and called to order a fairly large take out order late afternoon before their dinner rush (7 entrees and 2 kids meals.) They told us that they can't fulfill our order on a weds because it was shrimp night and we were ordering other menu items. Luckily we found another restaurant down the street who had our food out in 20 minutes. I've never had a restaurant say that they won't even take an order and turn customers away for not ordering a special. read more

Had a wonderful meal last night at the Canal View Cafe. The place was charming and the staff was so friendly, efficient and accommodating. We started on the deck by the pond, with the view of the canal in one direction and of the lake in the other, and stayed to watch the sunset. Wine bottle oil lamps in wrought iron stands lined the deck. Ask about the legend of the chicken, and if at least two of you are drinking the same wine, get yours in the chicken pitcher from Italy. Moving indoors for dinner, we ordered apps of bang bang shrimp (7 large pieces) and fried calamari, which was lightly fried, not greasy and came with some excellent marinara. Entrées ordered included the fish "Feast" which was excellent, a fried fish (haddock?) which was ample and awesome, a fish and greens sandwich, and the Chicken Caprese which was very flavorful (huge bowl...could be shared by two). All entrées except the sandwich came with either soup or salad. The Italian wedding soup was the best I ever had. Visiting the Canal View Café on a weekday was probably a good choice as the traffic was not extremely high by the beach. The limited parking spots around the beach seem to be "pay to park" so it was very nice that the restaurant had its own free parking lot around back. read more

Not one to complain, but service was poor. We sat down at 4pm with only two other tables full. Our food wasn't brought out till 5. Waiter forgot our fries and claimed that he didn't have enough hands to carry it all and made a snarky face. The fries came out 10 minutes later piping hot. So no, he had plenty of hands but just forgot to put them in. We said nothing, but asked for our bill. We waited 15 minutes for the bill as our server passed by us multiple times and said the bill was in his pocket. He proceeds to tell the manager we were unhappy. She comes over and defends his poor service by saying "his section is full". When we sat down, there was no one else there. So it couldn't of been that full. She asks why we were unhappy because our order was put in at 4:30 and out by 5. But we sat at 4 and ordered right then, our server just never put it in, causing us to wait an hour for food. Very disappointed with management and how they failed to correct the situation or apologize for poor service. Also disappointed with our server for snarky comments and failing to provide decent service. read more

I was there on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, around 6pm. Parking was not bad. It was busy (not packed). Very brief wait to be seated. Nice atmosphere. Good food. Generous portions. Unbearably slow waitstaff. Got worse when her friends sat at the table across from us. It would have been nice if she was that helpful (and quick) for us. Restaurant was half empty when we left. No excuse for slow service. With that being said... We will be back again, but not anytime soon. read more

I'd like to give this a 3.5 if I could. The restaurant is located directly across the street from the Erie Canal and also next to an amusement park at Sylvan Beach; a bustling area this time of year (late June). The restaurant was packed but we waited out the half hour at the bar and had fun. The bar tender was entertaining. Has outside dining but we chose the indoor air conditioning as we had been outside all day. I started with a Caesar salad, my wife a garden salad. Hers was good, mine was a little soggy but not too bad, plus I was starving. My wife had the zucchini parm and enjoyed it. I had the fisherman's feast. It wasn't bad, a decent size piece of haddock, but only two scallops and three shrimp. I've had better seafood platters but this wasn't bad. Our waitress was awesome in every way and we tipped her accordingly. It was packed when we arrived, and with that said, the restaurant was a bit dirty (spilled food on floor, etc). I saw some of the other dishes people around me were eating and they looked great. We would definitely return again but I would probably try another entree. read more

Beautiful Spot - Great Food - Nice Staff - Get there Before the Season Ends. This is a like a roadside inn on Cape Cod displaced to Central New York. It has the simple good food and hospitality of a great summer night on the shore. The Cafe, true to its name, sits along side the old Erie Canal junction with Oneida Lake. Most seats look out over the parking area to the lake or canal. The food is great. We stopped in for a late lunch, as we were finishing the early dinner crowd started to arrive for the Sunday night Harvest dinner special. They were all locals and knew each other so the place has a nice friendly atmosphere. Our lunches were great. Cups of soup - Italian Wedding - New England Chowder. Both good examples of the type. The IWS, was a little salty to my taste (but we don't cook with any salt at home, so we are sensitive to it. Haddock sandwich was great and large; the chicken spiedie* was wonderful. The meat was perfectly moist and grilled to perfection. The house made potato chips were great. The onion rings were good - not hand-made at the cafe but good. Solid offering of bottled beers. Both local crafts and national brands. We will certainly try to get back before they close for the season - Nov 22. *For those not in the know - a spiedie is are a CNY speciality - brought over from Italy to Binghamton, NY. Marinated cubes of meat are roasted on a spit and pulled off the spit into a long roll. The trick is get the meat seared and cooked but keep it moist. read more
