We really wanted to like this place, bc we love a good buffet. Alas, this one just sucks. There's a large selection, but it's a matter of quantity over quality. Much of the food is flavorless. Came here with my family and instantly regretted it. Sure, the staff was polite, but that doesn't make up for food that was flat-out disgusting. The sushi tasted wrong, the "crab" was practically nonexistent, and when they finally refilled it, it was nothing but sad little crab sticks. I stood around for over 10 minutes waiting for the hibachi chef, who apparently had better things to do. The grand finale? My entire family got sick the next day. I love Buffets, cuz I dont eat alot but love to try a little bit of everything. We were a party of 8 and they actually opened up a party room for us to sit in. ++ . Everyone ate an s ton of food, but many comments were Meh. I'm the only one who had a steak and I thought it was great. I think the ratio of Meh to Good was in the positive. Its really hard to review a place like this. The grocery side has some amazing finds you won't get anywhere in Spokane. You can even ask the manager if you are looking for a particular item and they will do their best to order it if their supplier has it available. Like so many other restaurants in the area, Canaan buffet needs to face their issues head on, and make changes that customers have been asking for. I worked for years in the restaurant industry. I know the challenges businesses face with budgets and staff. They can have some definite limitations. In my opinion I believe it would benefit them and improve the restaurant if they only ran a lunch buffet during the week, and a dinner buffet on the weekend. The rest of the time they should do sit down meals and takeout. Canaan could do quality sushi, Korean food with side dishes, have a habashi, even make their own dim sum. Customers are willing to pay more for quality, house made food. I know labor cost increase with house made items, but the food cost is drastically lower compared to prepared or prepped goods. Years ago the food, atmosphere, and even customer service was good and competitive with other respectable restaurants in Spokane. Like other restaurants time, and the economy has really shaped their entire business. I can tell just by looking at other comments from customers when the decline started happening. I know all businesses are in a tough spot, but it is obvious that if something is not done about the food, atmosphere, and customer service people will look elsewhere to satisfy their craving for Asian cuisine. Even the most loyal followers will stray if there is a huge change in quality, consistency, and or Value. There is so much potential in this hidden gem. The owners need to look not just at their pocketbooks, but the feedback of their customers. It was my favorite lunch spot. If you are going to try it I would suggest takeout. Until they address many issues other customers have spoke of prior I would avoid the buffet. I see some bad reviews so wanted to balance. I went on 9/15/22, and my party of four had a great time. I liked the variety and selection. They have a student discount. I ate my fill and wish I had room for more. The service was fine (though we didn't have any real needs). Also, I feel bad as the reason it's a grocery buffet is they had to pivot due to Covid, becoming a grocery store when no one went to buffets. It can't be easy running a mom-and-pop restaurant, especially this day and age. Anyway, my group had no complaints. But even if we had, I'd try to extend a little mercy and grace. For years Canaan Buffet was my go to (and recommended) asian buffet. Like many other reviews since the covid shutdown, this establishment never really recovered. The food and service has been in a steady decline. A lot of the good help left which really hurt the friendly atmosphere ( I miss the Asian lady with the head scarf who used to make the sushi and the blonde caucasian lady who worked at the front). The sushi really made this place in years past when they would have full rolls (ie rainbow rolls and nigiri) and you could request rolls as well, now I believe all the kitchen staff rotate in and make the bare minimum both in quantity and quality :(. Id love to see this Christian based and veteran supporting business bounce back but my hopes get fainter and fainter with each visit. read more

My family (2 adults, and 3 kids 8, 12, and 13) and I arrived at 7pm for dinner. This was our first (and last) visit to this restaurant. When we walked in we had to wait for several minutes to be waited on while the only person upfront finished taking care of someone who was paying their bill. The fish pond with waterfall and fish that is in the entryway was nice but the water in it was cloudy/murky and dirty. When we got seated there were about a half-dozen of groups in the restaurant. The meal and drinks set me back almost $90 bucks for the family. Most of the food was luke warm at best or just pain old. Stale hard noodles, the shrimp and other meats were dry and had no flavor; the sushi was room temp at best and only had a couple pairs of tongs for several types of sushi. Their garlic bread was hard as a rock and my kids tried to eat the pizza, but it was hard like cardboard. I had called the week before and asked if they had crab legs and was told yes, they had them, but none were in the buffet. Many things weren't labeled. A few things weren't too bad such as the salmon, and pepper steak and our waitress did an ok job at keeping our drinks full and plates cleared, but it sure was not worth the price. I normally don't go for buffet style restaurants, but I made an exception here as it was recommended to me by an acquaintance. We had semi-high hopes, the reviews weren't stellar by any means but not horrible. The restaurant appeared clean, the koi pond is a nice touch and no strange smells upon entry. But any hopes we had were quickly dashed. The food was mediocre at best, some of the dishes not kept hot and as for the sushi, we'll I didn't expect much at all but seriously it's nothing at all like what's advertised, a complete farce. There were just a few variations of the California roll, unappetizing veggie rolls, and no nigiri at all for the hour we were there 5:30-6:30 though they promised several times it was coming. To cap it all off, there are many signs chastising anyone who dares waste food, and frankly since the food is generally pretty awful they should expect it to have many unfinished plates! My soda drink tasted like sugar water and when the waitress came by I let her know. She said she would check and bring another but never returned. For Spokane, being inland without a huge Asain population, it's 5 stars. If it was Vancouver or Seattle or NYC, it would be 3 or 4 stars. According to what else is generally available locally, the food really is pretty good. There is an excellent variety, the Mongolian grill is good quality, there are a few western foods (fries, pizza, jello, mac & cheese, regular fried chicken, etc) for kids or whoever, there is an extensive salad bar, the sushi is hit and miss (sometimes ok, sometimes not really), they serve both Asian and western desserts plus lots of fresh fruit. The lunch price is good at $20 per adult. Other than the LARGE koi in the pond at the front, the atmosphere at the back near the buffet away from the windows is somewhat dark and lacking, but that has its own weird charm and keeps the prices lower. The make-shift Asian market is excellent and thoroughly stocked but not cheap, we found. Maybe we just bought the wrong stuff, idk. All that said, the Canaan Buffet is one of our go-to places to stop for a meal while we're in Spokane. Good value. read more

Bf and i Came in at 3:46pm (lunch time) and waited while a line form behind us at the desk. The hostess waited until 4:01 to come to the desk and charge dinner prices after we waited and came for lunch specifically. Came out to 57$ for two people and I never once got a refill on my Dr pepper. My bf got a pineapple cream soda and out waitress refilled his at least once. The fact that the restaurant was empty besides 1 or 2 families and the hostess waited for dinner prices to come serve us was seriously bothersome and seemed planned at the time since a few people in line saw her standing at a table in the middle area of the restaurant. The food is good for the most part and the grill area is great to create your own dish. I do love the oriental market inside it's great for any ramen noodles or fun snacks you could try. I have been waiting to return to Canaan since the COVID restrictions were lifted. I used to stop in monthly when I was in Spokane pre COVID. My review back then would have been totally different. At that time I would have rated it as the best Chinese Buffet style restaurant just about anywhere. But not today, Canaan is now a poor imitation of its former glory. My recent visit was very disappointing, the place is now part Chinese grocery store also. The food was nowhere near the old quality. The steamed shuemei ( spelling) are small mass produces things, not the big plump items of long ago ( probably a Sysco version of Chinese foods) All the hot trays where essentially empty when I was there, the place was not crowded, and even if it was that's not an excuse. It's purely the management keeping the trays low so that people will eat less. I had trouble even getting a small bow of fried rice from the trays. "and yes I have taste glue before" You will love the receipt it says you should "tip" your server 10 to 15% for what? You do not have a server it is a buffet you are the server. You get up go get your own food and bring it back to your table, ok give yourself a tip. The Bathroom (mens) disgusting, the place just opened for the day and there was paper towel all over the floor and there is no way the floor had been cleaned any time soon. I'm 3rd generation Chinese and this is very good food for our tastes, especially the brown seaweed salad which is tangy and a little bit spicy.
