UPDATE - If I'm in Lisbon I'm eating at Can the Can. This time around we were there twice. Once for lunch with a friend and then just us for a snack. Both times service was great, atmosphere is wonderful whether you eat outside or their gorgeous inside room. For lunch we ordered the cod fish baked à braz, the grilled calamari, and the black linguine with shrimp. Great portions, great value. The next time around we got their outstanding codfish fritters and the fried green beans which we Portuguese call "garden fishes." Just like my mom used to make them. Make sure to stop there and try some traditional Portuguese cuisine with some modern twists. read more

This place was suggested by Chat GPT and we were pleasantly surprised. Even though it was in a very heavy foot traffic area regarding tourists and monuments and just multiple things to see because the space was so large both in the plaza and outside the restaurant it didn't feel cramped. We got seated pretty quickly and we were very happy that there were multiple umbrellas up because the sun was definitely shining brightly that day. We saw some of the specials recommended by Yelp and chat GPT and decided to get some small tapas that were local to the area. A lot of them were with tuna and octopus. And they were very very delicious small portions which was great for us because we didn't want to have too much of a heavy meal as we were going to have a big dinner later on Service was spot on. We had three separate servers come check on us throughout our hour and 45 minutes there. Very pleasant, big smiles on their faces, and we're very quick to see if we needed any extra items. This was our first dinner in Lisboa. We were just walking around then got caught in the rain, so we decided to get something to eat. I love tapas, so we decided on this place because I have shellfish allergy. We got the hummus, but I didn't like the seeded bread they served with it. It was dense and tough, not like any pita I've had before. We got the marinated tuna which was tasty and melted in my mouth. We also got the cod fritters. They were tasty but nothing special. Last but not least we had the guacamole. It was very creamy and delicious, but they served it with what I think were lentil chips that were very fragile. I must say, this place blew me away! Every single dish we tried was absolutely divine! The octopus was cooked perfectly, you could cut it with your fork. A tad pricey but the food is delicious! We got 2 main dishes, the octopus and the cod, both of which were super yummy. They were both served with potatoes- the cod had some spinach and caramelized onions which were so flavorful in addition to the fish. We had been craving octopus and it was cooked beautifully. On our first evening in Lisbon we came here to watch the sunset, have a few tapas and a glass of wine (or two). The atmosphere was wonderful, looking out over the piazza, to the water and seeing the statue Cristo Rei watching over Lisbon, lit in purple (possibly for Advent). The whole Piazza and the tree lit up (near the time of sunset). It was beautiful. The service was fantastic, with our server making a few suggestions that were perfect! They gave my 12 year old a hard time about ordering from the kids menu, got the order wrong, and then made a big deal when we asked for the dessert that comes with it. Asking what waitress allowed us to order from the kids menu. The sangria tastes like soda, didn't taste the sparkling wine. Seems like they are skimping on things and overcharging. Only 4 reviews for "Can the Can"? I'm so surprised! This is a top restaurant located on one of the most beautiful place in Lisbon: Praça do Comércio. Most people and tourists arrive here after their shopping time in the Augusta street. I am a tourist but I have to say that I truly hate "tourist-catcher" restaurants and shops. Great place right off the metro and in the main square. Got a table in the sun which was nice to soak up some sun. All the staff was friendly and all of them spoke English. Cocktails seemed over priced until we got them. 10 euro for a Hendrix gin and tonic seemed steep then it came to the table. Totally worth the value. Foot was great. We split appetizers including anchovies with toast and olives and an octopus croquette with a mustard and honey "dipping" sauce. Solid 4 for the food and 5 for the service and atmosphere. Let's start by the great location right by the water and big square, wonderful to people watch if you are lucky to get a table outside. My waiter Mario spoke English very well, was knowledgable, made excellent recommendations. The full team followed suit, checking on me without being to over bearing just at the write level. I started with the starter platter, which I thought would be too big for one person, it slightly was so I left a bit un eaten but it was a great way to sample the different starters, some were better than others, for example the one that is wrapped in zucchini and is spicy was my favorite. I had a special gin cocktail to this and it was delicious even though I hate gin, I trusted Marios judgement. I had the main course of salted cod which, yes it IS salty hence the name, but it was just to the perfect level another excellent dish. I had the traditional custard for dessert, I was so full by then I couldn't do something bigger though I wish I had gone with the couscous recommendation now. I highly recommend this place for a try. The drinks weren't bad, but we had also ordered a Octopus Croquette. The first time it came out, it was stone cold in the middle. And I mean cold - not warm - but cold.
