We visited Lisbon August 2025 and I have been meaning to catch up on reviews and wanted to shine a very positive light on this place for sure. We wanted Portugese food at a "nice, semi-formal sit down place". Gambrinus looked to tick all the marks - we walked there and found the place quickly - very charming storefront. You walk in past the bar room which is very quaint and semi-supperclub formal. We got to the maî·tre and were seated in the very charming formal dining room. There is a reserved elegance of this place that makes it feel as if it's been there for 50 or 100 years - wonderful classic decor. The staff are all in formal attire - striking all the vibes of a late 1950's American SupperClub in Portugal. And to our glee - this is indeed what this place is! We were served our starter drinks while we reviewed the menu options; our "formal, main waiter" who is in the most formal attire walked us patiently through the options (we are new to Portugese food) and he made a number of excellent suggestions. Our starter course arrived, shrimp flambe, which was made table side and served - hinted at what was to come. We were amazed at the showmanship of the staff - very formal but friendly and in a way comical. As we awaited the mains, a table near us ordered something also flambe'd crêpes. But it was the SHOW that was special. They brought out the cooking stuff, and the waiter arrived and put on a literal magic show - acting like he had the fire in his hands - he would release the flames into the crêpes and then capture them back in his hand and the flames were gone. The table that ordered them were delighed, and we also enjoyed the show. Our main order did not disappont and hit all the marks. We had an after dinner desert and drinks, then a coffee. The price is not inexpensive; the food and entertainment makes this place five stars. If you are in Lisbon and want to have a "formal" feeling dinner that is classic and entertaining - go here for sure. It's delightful, fun, and worth every penny! read more

It felt like an old school steak house inside. Wood panel walls, red carpeting, white linen tablecloth. Waiters dressed in black jackets. The entrance is inconspicuous, red door no flashy menus posted outside or a person trying to get you to come inside like all the other places on the street - that feels like South beach Miami. The service was impeccable. The food was good but not spectacular but we were all satisfied. Lots of fish options like oysters, fish rice, fish stews as well as pork chops and steak. The price was more than we have usually been paying around town, almost double but I was kinda expecting that when we walked in. If you want a nice quiet classy sit down place with great service away from the chaos happening outside then this is the place. read more

The uber dropped us a few blocks away from this restaurant in the old part of town. It looks so historic, yet comfortable inside. It is a lovely restaurant. The food was ok, but over priced, maybe due to the location. Dinner for 4 was 285 US$ (246 Euros at $1.16/Euro). read more

Classic, old-school, vintage, old world vibes all around. I have been coming here probably for over forty years.... You read that right. Since I was a little girl. I remember sitting at the bar with my Dad dissecting some freshly boiled shrimp . I also remember the shrimp with garlic (you can have that as an appetizer or I'd ask it as a main meal with rice - out of this world). The goat at New Year's is pretty classic. Gambrinus is known for its fresh fish and seafood. This time I had the sole with capers. We did have the shrimp as an appetizer. One had the filet mignon Gambrinus with fries. The meat was superbly tenderized and delicious. Another had the fried squid. Half of us had the semi-freddo of chocolate and hazelnut- another classic from childhood that is still incredible. And half of us had the Crepes Suzette. The show itself is like a magic show even if the sauce is a bit too sweet for my taste but you will be wowed. I recognize some staff over the years and that is what is one of the most remarkable things that sets Gambrinus apart from other restaurants. Many spend their entire careers there and serving is an art form. A restaurant that has stopped in time for me. It still brings great memories and the food and service never disappoint. My friends took me here for a proper Martini in Lisbon. The cocktail was good and so we're the croquetes. Service was very good as well.

The dinner we had was average at best and nothing special. Service was a silly affair w/ a # of men in suits and ties providing much flourish taking orders and putting down plates. We were put in an interior room that is segregated from the other parts of the place. Everybody in the room - which is a small wood-paneled room that holds about 20 - was an American. This was off-putting once I realized that there was a larger, much nicer dinning room. Two dinners w/ a beer and a glass of wine (no desert) was about $100 USD. Gambrinus is an amazing Portuguese restaurant with 5-star service. The wait staff are amazing and they prepare most of your meals in front of you. They literally read your face and if there is anything you don't like, they come in and take it away from you... our waiter even mentioned that if we didn't like our starters he would switch it out for free. They also make these filter coffees that make you feel like you're watching a science experiment in a lab. I don't drink coffee but my friend does and she said it was great so I believe her. My Portuguese style grouper was delicious! I also had the seafood bisque to start and that was great as well. A little lighter than what I'm familiar with but it tasted really good. My friend had lamb chops and apple pie - funny story, she started to ask questions about the apple pie and he l her to hold on a second then brought the entire pie for her to see and approve before he cut into it. Great meal and experience. Near my hotel so I walked in, no reservation but I was early so no need. Service was excellent. It wasn't crowded so I had several people waiting on me. I had the Grouper and it was terrific. Also some really nice dry white wine which I wished I'd taken a picture of the label so I could ask for it again! Would go back again! read more

First night in portugal... my travel buddy wanted to dine here as it was a recommended place and high end. The bar had diners but the restaurant only had one other person and then she left and we had the whole place to ourselves but that's probably because it was also early. The setvice was ok, not all that it was hyped up to be. The food was terrible, I had the lamb shank and she had the shrimp with rice. The food was not warm at all. For the price and description offered this was very disappointing. I stay away from high end restaurants when I travel but my friend loves this stuff. The bread was not complimentary. read more

This is a classic spot snd many yelpers raced. Rightly so!!! We uber ED to the spot and walked into old Portugal as we got into the square and then the restaurant. The staff were attentive and the spot we got was on the elevated level. Tables were sufficiently spaced so we could have a conversation. Beautiful setting The breads were superb to start. Not sure why the taste is so good. Started with some shrimp and it was cooked a couple of ways. Perfect size snd nice snd firm. Self peel! Entrees were the steamed seabreem and salmon. Perfectly cooked with sides which must have been picked that morning. The evening was finished at the bar with madeiras tastings from 1875 and 1907. What an experience!! read more

For dinner, food is delicious, traditional but somewhat overpriced. What makes me come back night after night though, is its excellent bar. Once you step in, you will see the bar. In the back are lined bottles so old they look like they got hauled from a sunken ship or unearthed from a forgotten cellar. When I was there, I tried a 1850 Madeira for 16 Euro. A 1907 is 12 Euro. Madeira is a fortified wine, a little sweet, like a port or sherry. Gosh, I easily pay more for an average glass of wine or cocktail on SoBe! For all their overpriced food, this is ridiculously cheap. So, you absolutely have to go there, just so you can brag about tasting a 160-year-old wine. And let me warn you, it will ruin you, as from now on you will scoff at most other bottles and say "hmm, not as good as the one I tasted at Gambrinus" and you most certainly will not be pleased with the bottle you picked up at the airport... If you like, you can order some appetizers, like pata negra or cheese, or just snack on their almonds (which is not free, btw). Service, as is expected, is old world charm and courteous. Not into wine? Order a cup of coffee and see how they brew it the old style way. Either way, it is most certainly a perfect ending for your day (or put you into an excellent mood for what's more to come). read more

Scarlet shrimp was delicious & waiters were exceptionally friendly & casual formal dining

Happened upon the place while strolling through the area to pick a place for dinner. The interior looked very welcoming through the front window, so we went in. Lovely restaurant in an old-world manner, with an atmosphere totally opposite all the other loud & boisterous places surrounding it for blocks. Was so nice that we returned 2 additional evenings during our Lisbon stay. By coincidence we received an email from acquaintances the following day suggesting we try Gambrinus, since it was one of their favorite places on their prior visits. Small world. Will return on future visits. Professional staff with a lovely atmosphere & pleasant food. Only 1 complaint. On our 3rd visit there were 4 VERY LOUD & VERY PROFANE-mouthed customers sitting at the bar who were obviously intoxicated & dropping the F-word in almost every sentence. Unfortunately, the young bartender did "nothing" to address the situation, so we did not stay for dinner that night & left after 1 drink. This type of behavior may be acceptable in a sports bar but should not be tolerated in a more sophisticated restaurant. I fault the bar staff for not properly addressing this situation since it diminished the quality standards of Gambrinus. read more

Came here with a friend who has been coming here for years and enjoyed this beautiful 1978 Niepoort Vintage Porto. The food and atmosphere in the bar was absolutely delightful and seems to transport you back to a different era of class and sophistication. read more

You literally get 5 shrimps with dry rice - no invention, no taste whatsoever.
