Octopus, side salad, & vino verde
    Elizabeth F.

It was a late Saturday evening in July. Lisbon is bumping. I'm looking for a spot for dinner and wanted to try a seafood spot on my list to find that they were no longer taking walk-ins. I walk 5 minutes further and find another one closed. I walked another 10 minutes to Baixamar which is also on my list, but hadn't wanted to try as it was further away than anticipated. They're open and I snag the last table outside, getting to people watch and enjoy the evening breeze. The server is very helpful sharing which green wine is dryer. He also warned me when I over ordered, suggesting that the small plates are actually quite small so I landed on the octopus and side salad. The octopus is grilled well and has a sweet potato puree on which it sits, a delicious complement to the squid. There were a few pieces of broccoli and cauliflower. Everything is seasoned perfectly. The side salad had a hint of lemon juice. I enjoyed the brief conversation with the server and glad I found a spot on a late night. The food also came out fairly quick, so an added bonus after nearly an hour of looking around for dinner.

Top tier experience. Staff was friendly. Restaurant was clean and bright. Outside patio also nice for good weather. Didn't wait long to be seated or to eat. This was our first meal in Portugal and we loved every single thing we ate. We aren't normal dessert people, but cause the food was 5 stars in flavor, Presentation and quality, we had to try the desserts as well. We def aren't disappointed in the least. Matter of fact. We tried their sister restaurant Maria catita the next day, as well as their wine bar the family owns.

Seafood pasta. Winning. Bad picture. Great dish.

First of all shout out to every restaurant in Lisbon for being so kind to my toddler. This pasta was deceiving delicious. The sauce was perfectly salted and flavorful with parsley sprinkled in. The seafood was fresh and a good variety of mussels, clams, shrimp, and a razor clam. I wish all of my seafood had opened but just a couple of clams were still closed so I let it slide. Overall it was hot and fresh and everyone enjoyed their meal.

We got the Seafood Platter with a lobster. AHHHHMAZING. So much food for a reasonable price. Everything was so well seasoned and fresh! Wait staff was friendly and food came out decently quick. Was fun staring down the lobsters in the tank while chowing down. They gave us extra napkins and cleansing towlettes between the scenes of carnage which were very needed. It was really hot when we went in July and not really airconditioned. We also had a hard time getting a water refill. Forgot how much we paid but it was worth it, 10/10 definitely go torment their lobsters

The first leg of my nine-week European backpacking adventure brought me to Lisbon, Portugal, a city nestled into picturesque hillsides and steeped in vivid hues. My traveling companion and I made a rule early on in this excursion that we would resolve to try the local cuisine in each of our destinations, and I couldn't help but be excited about what little treasures I'd unlock in pursuit of this objective. I was so delighted to find myself in a country I had never before stepped foot in, hearing a language that had never graced my ears, taking in a cityscape unlike any other I had ever laid eyes upon. During long walks traversing Lisbon's desperately uneven terrain, I made a habit of perusing menus posted outside each establishment. Having made the decision to transition to a pescatarian diet at the age of nine, my seafood-loving self was almost instantaneously intrigued. The fruit of the sea has always held a special place in my heart as well as my palate, and I was so excited to taste what the Iberian Peninsula had to offer. One afternoon, after having spent a while basking in the sun by the water with the signature red cheeks of a tourist who had forgotten her sunscreen, I stumbled upon Baixamar. The restaurant was hidden under a semi-discrete blue awning, tucked away on a cobblestone street awash in people enjoying colorful drinks at happy hour. Upon crossing the threshold, my dining companion and I were seated directly next to a tank of live lobsters. We ordered a sparkling red fruit sangria to take the edge off, which was stunning both in its appearance and its flavor. Garnished with a cinnamon stick and mint leaves, the beverage reminded me of everything I loved about Lisbon itself -- the energy, the vigor, and the liveliness of it all. As my main dish, I opted for the salmon with coconut black rice, which came plated alongside an incredibly light, almost foamy sauce of lemongrass. The entrée was a gorgeous fusion of bright, quasi-tropical flavors and the grounding earthy notes, seamlessly satisfying my late afternoon cravings. My acquaintance selected the cuttlefish ink linguine, which came topped with a stunning assortment of shellfish and other seafood. If you find yourself in Lisbon, I can't recommend Baixamar enough -- drop by for a midday drink or take a pause to enjoy a full plate. Seafood in a coastal city is something to be savored! 10 out of 10 out of 10. We waited a little longer than expected for our table but the waiter made up for it with quick service and a smile. I came with a group of seven, started out with passion sangrias and wine. We ordered a mixture of appetizers, tapas and main dishes. Everyone was happy with their selection ! The oysters were fresh and delightful, the garlic and brandy prawns had a nice little buzz to it:) and they made an adjustment for me with my dairy allergy. Other orders on the table were the mussels, black linguine, seafood risotto and steak. There were no complaints all around and the ambience was very pleasant. I will definitely be back before leaving Alfama

Frutos do Mar com Linguini Nero

OMG! What a great find! You MUST head to this seafood restaurant on Rua dos Bacalhoeiros (Cod fishers' Street) just a couple of blocks NE of the Praça do Comércio and the Tagus River. There's construction in the street right now, but DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU! It has GREAT seafood at very moderate prices - take this from a retired couple on a budget. Santos and Francisco speak perfect English but they allowed me to use my modest Portuguese. Whatever language you use, you'll love the food. Look for the "Prato do Dia", the daily special. We chose the Frutos do Mar com Linguini Nero, Seafood with Black Linguini. You'll gobble it up and soak the fresh bread in the delectable olive oil/garlic sauce too. It comes with the bread and olives appetizer and a glass of house wine, ALL INCLUSIVE with Tax too for .....13 euros pp (about US $15 pp)!!!! The seafood plate brought back memories of a similar one my Sicilian grandfather made for Christmas Eve. And we were here around our US Thanksgiving and the streets were already illuminated with Xmas decor. Intimate and Unbeatable! Check it out!

After being unable to get a seat at Maria Catita restaurant, we were walking around looking for a restaurant for lunch. Baixamar had exactly the seafood we were looking for, available seating, and was located right next door. The wait staff was super busy so it took a while to get menus. They seemed more interested in getting people in instead of serving the patrons. Similarly, when we asked for our bill, it took asking twice because the staff was worried about how to get 2 more patrons in when there were no empty tables (you can have our table if you give us the bill). We ordered the Portuguese mussels appetizer (€12) along with a tuna steak sandwich with a cuttlefish ink bun (€8) and a soft-shell crab sandwich with a curry bun (€8). The food was excellent. The mussels were tasty. The sauce was not overpowering or too salty. The tuna steak sandwich was my favorite. The tuna was perfectly seared on the outside and pink on the inside. The cuttlefish ink bun was tasty. It added a bit of sweetness to the sandwich that I enjoyed. The soft-shell crab sandwich was also excellent. The crab was juicy with every single bite. Although the curry bun was tasty, the flavor combination was unexpected. The sandwich is a bit messy because the soft-shell crab requires a little bit of force to bite. Overall, the food was great and I would come back. However, the service could be improved.

Eventually one or two people started to join as we sat, but for how good the view was at this place I'm surprised it wasn't busier. Service was a bit slow despite us being the only ones there, but the food was really good. The avocado toast came with a perfectly cooked egg, and my scrambled eggs with pickled onions were also tasty. The coffee here was also strong and delicious, but really, you're here for the views. I don't know that I'd travel out of my way to stop here, but if you're in the area and are craving food with a view (and have time to spare) this is a solid option in my opinion.

We couldn't get a spot by the railing, but when some other people left, they moved us to a great spot just in time for food to arrive. Would definitely come back. We had the cheese plate, the bifana, and the meat croquettes. The bifana was surprisingly different than I expected, but tasted like a beef stew dip sandwich. The meat croquettes were filled with some super soft meat inside, and the favorite was the cheese plate with a huge bowl of toast and bread.

He will talk to you for hours and teach you about food and wine and culture and talk about the history of food and how it came to be in Portugal. I loved it. I learned so much. I aspire, as an American, to learn from and look up to other cultures. I feel very honored to have dined in a restaurant managed by him on our trip to Portugal. I'm going to recommend to our travel coordinator to add this restaurant to the Google map recommendations list because more people need to go to this place - they need more tables, more space, because I'm convinced this is such a hidden gem that should be exposed to the masses to enjoy! We visited several wineries and this restaurant had the best wine - bar none! The fish, a fish I hadn't tried before, was deliciously seasoned, falls apart with the fork, the creamy rice was just divine. I normally will never eat little cherry/grape tomatoes - ever - but the perfect bite of fish, creamy rice, and a tomato was... perfection. The menu is deeply curated; flavors - textures - wines that make sense. You can tell Frederico what you normally like and he 100% knows what wines he has that you will love. The tomato, orange, ham, salad, was absolutely balanced and delicious. I'm so grateful that our first trip to Portugal we got to meet Frederico and dine with these wonderful people who love food and wine as much as us. I'll never forget it as long as I live. You will not be disappointed. Promise.

It was not crowded at all on a Friday night, and I was able to strike up a conversation with fellow diners and actually hear myself talk. That is rare these days. I was surprised they were offering Happy Hour pricing around 7 PM, so I quickly took advantage of a pitcher of sangria, which was delicious and incredibly fresh. I started with the chorizo, which you cook yourself right at the table. For my main course I ordered the steak with eggs, and it was excellent. To finish, I had the crème brûlée for dessert, and it was also outstanding. Overall, a truly wonderful hidden gem in Lisbon. I cannot wait to return.
