So we hit up Forestport for the Eclipse and while clouds rolled in minutes before totality...the food still left us happy. CASH ONLY. And while they have an ATM, it broke while we were there...luckily, we had some. Service was outstanding. Growing up in Minnesota, you truly need to appreciate the authenticity of waitresses in smaller sized towns, they will treat you like a regular if you are kind and let you know the business end if you aren't. Basically, you get what you give. We had amazing service and awesome food. Just a GOOD FYI- they cook in order of ticket and cook to order so it can take a bit longer but it was worth the wait!

When I look for a diner I check Yelp and the parking lot. There should be a fair amount of cars on a weekend morning. Campbell's had a lot of them and some pulling in as others were pulling out so in we went. Cash only but they do have an ATM. I like cash only places they are working at keeping prices reasonable. We sat in the front but there is also a back room by the bathrooms. It's been around for a long time but it is very clean. Service is the friendly make you feel at home like a diner should kind. We were awful hungry by the time we got here over an hour on the road so I apologize for lack of pics. I had th English muffin sandwich with cheddar egg and bacon. The egg is folded like an omelet over the cheese keeping it from dripping or sliding out and the bacon was loaded into every bite letting you know it was there by even hanging out of the edges. Very filling! My travel companion had eggs toast and home fries and barely finished them but kept eyeballing my sandwich as he ate. Lol it was a fantastic sandwich. Very reasonably priced we will make this a breakfast stop when we head to the Adirondacks again.

Went there 2 days back to back this weekend. FAST and friendly service. Food was typical diner did, but DELICIOUS! My husband ordered meat lovers omelette, but he asked that they make 2 orders to put into the one. They had a bet he couldn't finish. My money was on him! He came back the next day to do it all over again! They said they wish they had a t shirt to give him! lol Packed with meat and especially bacon his favorite. Same for my bacon cheeseburger! The bun was soft and fresh. My son ate that hungry man like he was in prison! Glad we stopped in and they have new regular customers when we are up at our camp!

Probably the most legit diner open in Forestport. I would suggest eating here before going up to old Forge is usually no way in the service is spectacular. We ordered the half pound cheeseburger along with the home cut fries and the grilled cheese which were all amazing. I ordered the burger medium rare and it came out well. Much cheaper than any old Forge price. Portions are huge.

A diamond in the rough. Honestly one of the best bacon cheese burgers I've ever had. Huge and delicious. Homemade pie, we loved the Chocolate Peanut Butter cream pie, friendly service too.

Campbell's food is mostly home-made and done correctly. Best diner-fare in New York State. Giant portions. Try the egg salad with olives.

This used to be THE place to go for a hearty early breakfast before / after fishing or hunting…read more The location is amazing, by a river full of large rocks and pools that are fun to explore (be careful!). Nearby are ponds with launch access. Years ago we enjoyed this "camp-type" diner for the conversations among patrons and pony-tailed Dave, the owner. Hashbrown casserole was a guilty pleasure. We enjoyed the fresh fried donuts, especially the chocolate-covered old-fashions. Then we'd drive up rte 28 to Old Forge and beyond. But...the last time we visited there was very harsh fluorescent lighting in the front room. The back room was dark and empty. And No hashbrown casserole! The young waitress told us that Dave had retired. Ah. I hope the new boss will infuse this historic diner with new life to keep it alive. Of course good food and friendly discussions must continue. But they need to clean everything, add fresh items, and maybe use lighting* that fits the rustic camp character. Play UP the historic old wood features like the bar and cooler. Maybe add woodsy scents. Easy. I still recommend stopping here for breakfast on the way north to OldForge. (You will not find much else anyways!). After breakfast, go around the corner to check out the wild rocky clean stream...like people have been doing for hundreds of years. *Photos from 6yrs ago show that the fluorescent lights were already there. IDK why they made the room ugly this time. Perhaps installing half warm-white tubes is all that's needed.

Our server came and dropped menus and was about to run off. I quickly asked her for a water. She then asked my wife what she wanted to drink and then came back a while later with both drinks. We ordered although I don't think she was expecting us to order so quickly (I get the impression fast service isn't their thing). I was not super happy with my meal. I tried their chicken parm sandwich and it was somehow rubbery and overcooked at the same time. The fries weren't too bad, but the sandwich just wasn't good. My wife had the cheesesteak and liked it. Overall, it's more bar than restaurant. Not super impressive. And while they weren't busy, they seemed understaffed. Our server came to our table to serve our drinks, take our order, and bring dinner out...however until we had finished our meal - we didn't see her again. Not to check on us, see if we needed refills or for anything else. Oh well.

Wasn't really put together well. Soup, shrimp and crab bisque, amazing, as previously enjoyed. Not salty at all. Salmon with mustard sauce special was excellent. Brussels and rice were very good, as well. Bacon wrapped pork medallions bourbon cream sauce was just ok. Vegetables and mashed potatoes were good. Not a mash potatoes person but theirs weren't bad. Their French Fries were great. Restaurant is nice inside with indoor and in season, outdoor seating. They have lots of areas for groups including an upstairs section. The Tavern on the Gorge boasted a friendly staff, good bar food and a welcoming atmosphere with a good assortment of beverage offerings. I happened to catch this place during a night whereby they had comedians from NYC. The comedians were very good and got plenty of laughs poking fun at the Afirondack lifestyles and values. The patrons appreciated this ribbing and a great night of unexpected fun was a much needed release for me and my wife. We will return on our next trip to the North Country to recapture this homespun experience.

Chalk it up to Upstate, NY doing what Upstate, NY does best: Cold Beer and Chicken Wings. And in…read morethis case, it should be Chicken Wings first and cold beer second. You can certainly pull up a bar stool and drop a Utica Club in a can or get a Saranac draft. No issue there. But what you really want to be doing is ordering wings. Seriously...get in car...drive to Prospect...order wings. Look, you can get caught up in wings from Buffalo, Rochester, New York City (not SF because there is not a good wing in this entire city...although at least Kezar makes an effort)...whatever. They all take a back seat to what you get in almost every establishment in Syracuse and Utica. Let's put it this way...it's HARD to be at the top or near the top (which Tavern on the Gorge is) in the wing category in Central NY. Just WAAAY too much competition and people in CNY like their wings. But Tavern on the Gorge...they get a high seat in the Top 5 category and my debate upon leaving the bar was whether or not they were number 1. Wing sauce is apparently a tough thing. I don't think it's a tough thing, but to most bars and restaurants it's essentially the toughest thing they must do. NOTHING varies more establishment to establishment than a chicken wing. Certainly there are some places trying to put their own spin on it (90% of these folks are just making a mistake btw). Not a good idea fyi. The wing sauce at TOTG is as close to perfect as your going to get. Depending on who you talk to, you'll get differing opinions on wing sauce. But in general, the diehards know the base recipe and an ingredient that can have a major impact is butter/margarine. So those wings sauces you see that have sort of a heavier texture (heavy being almost creamy)...they crank up the butter/margarine. Not a bad thing. The place in direct competition with TOTG does this and those wings are ridiculous as well. But TOTG does things a little differently and what you end up with is a sauce with slightly less creaminess and amazing tang. And they don't skimp on the heat...in fact, they dial it to perfection. Don;t worry about going in and having to order mild because you don't. If you don;t want to go hot...go medium...that's fine as well. But just know that Upstate does it's wings the right way...in a fryer, with ridiculously good sauce. TOTG has it nailed. Great place to grab a couple of UC's or a Saranac and eat wings. These are great wings. Period.
