This is you typical roadside ice cream/diner joint. The ice cream is delicious and the food soso. I little Val s and greasy but the staff are all super sweet. Like many places not a cheap as back in the day but still not terrible. We would stop again for ice cream, they have a nice out door area, but probably not for food. read more

stopped here on the way to old forge for some ice cream and am so glad i did!! i got a chocolate soft serve with rainbow sprinkles and my boyfriend got a twist in a cone - both which we loved. there's a cute restaurant as well that was pretty crowded, but we only stopped for ice cream. service was very fast and the staff is very friendly! read more

Good for a quick bite. Average diner or bar type of food. The foot long hot dog was pretty good. Fish sandwich was average. Everyone was full and happy with the meal. Service was pretty good. Ice cream was our favorite part. Will definitely give it another try when in the area and see if we get a better vibe on the second go round. read more

We stopped here at this place along the highway after a long day of driving for our annual Adirondack visit --- hangriness was in the air. Theres a nice little grassy picnic area with actual tablecloths (plastic albeit). I had the chili cheese fries minus the chili. It was all good, but I would have loved to have seen the french fries a tad bit more crispy but that could have been a personal preference. All in all a good experience. read more

Decent snack bar style food and ice cream Stopped here on our way back from Old Forge and grabbed some burgers and drinks. Nothing special, but good enough food. Burgers were good, but the bun size is way too big compared to burger size. We also noticed that there were quite a few differences between their online menu and what they serve. We ordered ahead and it didn't take long for meal to be ready after we got there. I'm rating it as a 3 because it's an average place and because where we sat wasn't particularly clean. I don't know if they clean after each person/group is seated, but it surely doesn't seem like it. This is an important area in the COVID era to improve on. Having said all of that - it's really the only place in the area that we could find, so it's a good enough option in the area. read more

Let's get this right out of the way: Kayuta's is a roadside stop with a terrifying clown motif. Don't say I didn't warn you, Muncho, the clown is everywhere. Terrifying clown motif aside, this roadside stand is a classic throwback to another time. Pulling up, you expect to be greeted by Bobby Sockers and Greasers. We pulled in to grab a cone, and were seduced into splitting a fried fish sandwich. The fish had a satisfyingly crunchy coating with a fresh and moist center. The ice cream is your typical soft serve. But enough about the food, you know why you really stopped here. You stopped for the childlike joy of rainbow sprinkles, for the roadside picnic tables with metal umbrellas, and most importantly, for the luxurious feeling of those carefree and endless days of summer. This is a roadside ice cream parlor, diner, etc. Cutesy & somewhat charming, but it had been built up for me by friends and I have to say, I was let down. We were on our way up to drop the kids off at camp, and my friend's daughter kept insisting we had to stop at Kayuta. She kept telling us that they have the best milkshakes, and the ice cream flavors are interesting. I had seen a copy of sign advertising their twist flavors which read "Tastefully Twisted" but when we pulled in, it looked like the sign was down. We were there for a full lunch - 2 adults, 2 tween girls. Service was terrible but I think that was because they had someone call out. There was only one waitress for the entire dining room. She asked if we were interested in breakfast or lunch, and left us with lunch menus. It took quite awhile to get our drinks, and then came my big question: are the clam strips fried in the same oil as the shrimp? Sadly, everything is fried in the same oil, so I was advised to avoid the wings, the french fries and half the stuff on the menu. *sigh* I gave up and ordered eggs benedict. Young lady #1 ordered the clam strips and a chicken caesar wrap. The clam strips were paltry, but she said they tasted all right. The chicken caesar wrap was very good. Young lady #2 ordered chicken fingers with fries, and the other adult duplicated my order. It took forever to get our food. Two parties who arrived after us were served first, probably because they ordered the "all you can eat" pancakes. When our eggs arrived, they were overdone, the english muffins were burnt, and they looked like they'd been sitting. Again, we'll chalk this up to the short-staffing. They were served with a healthy dose of home fries and asparagus, which were a nice touch. I guess the wraps and fried foods are more common orders, since both seemed pretty good. Adult #2 sampled them and said they were good. After all that kibbitzing about needing a milkshake and going on & on about the ice cream, Young Lady #1 didn't order either! Young lady #2 ordered a twist cone, vanilla and root beer. She said it was pretty good but I passed on that. Young Lady #1 said she'd rather stop at Stewart's. read more

Stopped here on a recent trip to New York headed down to Boston. Was looking for a place just like this, a little roadside burger and ice cream shop. Since there had not been any recent Yelp reviews I wasn't sure what to expect, but you also have to take reviews with a grain of salt. Cash is the way to go. Not being from New York I didn't realize that you receive discounts at places for using cash, this place being one of them. No problem for us. We ordered a bacon cheese burger and a mushroom Swiss burger with fries and cheese sticks. We both liked our choices. Burgers were a good size and thick patty. Not this little flat burger you get at some places. Fries were good size and the small was anything but a small size. Cheese stick also very good. Unfortunately, we were both too full to enjoy the ice cream. If we make our way through this part of New York again we will have to make sure we get ourselves a soft serve. read more

We stopped here on our way to the Adirondacks at a friend's request. I am not sure what this place's obsession with clowns is but there were clowns painted/printed on everything....a little creepy. Once inside, you will see that Kayuta is a very no frills, home style cooking type diner. I tried their special that day (fried chicken). It came with potato of choice (I got mashed) and corn. The corn looked quite under the weather....not acceptable during corn season. The mashed potatoes were a little dry but were enjoyed by another friend. The fried chicken was definitely above average and I would get it again. Someone at our table got spaghetti and meatballs. The sauce was bland and watery. The last person ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and she absolutely loved it. It looked very greasy from my perspective but I didn't try any. We sampled their pecan pie - it was average (but a little dry). Overall, I wouldn't stop here again unless I knew they had that fried chicken on the menu that day. But if someone requested to stop here again, I wouldn't make too much of a hullabaloo. read more

We stopped here on our way to upstate NY from Boston. We were thinking we couldn't go wrong with a diner. When we walked in, there was a nice waitress who was quick on her feet to take our order. We ordered burgers and chicken tenders. The kids weren't thrilled with the burgers. They tasted like the meat had some sort of seasoning to it. Thankfully the chicken fingers I ordered for myself they liked. Needing more food we ordered chicken basket to go. When the kids got in the car, my daughter took a bite of one of them and it was raw. Stopped by on our way through town because the clowns looked interesting. Walked in and there were flies all over the kitchen and the chef wasn't wearing a hair net or gloves. Probably should have just left then but for some reason decided to order anyways. Got told they would bring the food to us outside but after waiting for 20 minutes went inside and the food was just sitting there uncovered. This would not have been a problem if it weren't for the hefty amount of flies hanging out in the kitchen. Probably should have left at this point too but again decided to eat the food for some reason. Food was mediocre, cheese had a weird flavor and way overpriced for what it is. The only decent thing were the mozzarella sticks which were obviously store bought and frozen. I have no one to blame but myself when I Inevitably get food poisoning from a clown themed diner but you can still save yourself. read more

We ordered cheeseburgers and fries. The French fries were not shoestring fries. They were real French fries and were delicious. I had the bacon blue cheese burger and it was perfect! These are not skimpy burgers! They are even served on a butter toasted bun, which adds extra flavor to the sandwich. This is our favorite place to stop in upstate New York. read more

The problem with the previous reviewers is that it is like they went to Russia and tried to get Asian cuisine. Central and Northern New York summer cuisine is made up of hamburgers, hot dogs, and ice cream. Ordering other things, no matter what the special, is a sign of not knowing your cultural geography and history. After more than 3 decades of passing this shop and never stopping (because its location from my original home never made sense as a place to stop - too close to or from our destination or origination), it finally made sense to stop there. Yes, there are clowns all over the place - owner's prerogative; is it your home? It looks old. Likely is. Partner ordered, so I cannot say much about service or personality. Again, if you travel to Russia to experience southeast Asian personality, you made the wrong turn in Albuquerque. Northern New Yorkers are nice, but not at first and not until YOU earn their trust. We ate outside for the fresh air and green scenery. Our daughter played in the grass while we ate. We ordered a cheeseburger, fries, and a chicken quesadilla. That last order was a long shot given where we were - near Poland. My partner isn't from there or the region, so she didn't know she was potentially barking up a distasteful tree. That tree proved to be a revelation. Guess what? The burgers are some of the best burgers I've had in a long time. I eat burgers while on the road a lot. AUTHENTIC BURGERS is what you will get here. Authentically grilled meat on an authentic grill. You can taste the delicious char. The buns were authentically grilled on said authentic grill. The chicken in the quesadilla was juicy and wonderfully seasoned and grilled. The cheese in the quesadilla was tasty and was joined by authentically grilled onions and peppers. It was enough to feed our 4 yr old and my partner. The fries were good in that they were made of authentic potatoes. Oh, and the soft serve ice cream: I sample soft serve ice cream EVERYWHERE I go, from Maine to Missouri and Georgia to Vermont. This is one of the best stops for soft ice cream. I got the twist with rainbow sprinkles, the model to compare ice cream across the eastern U.S. It ranks top. As good as Benny's in Old Forge. Better than Pied Piper in that town. Better than the main stand in Inlet. Creamy and flavorful. Don't pass it up. You want AUTHENTIC summer cuisine in Northern New York that harkens back to the mid 20th century, before the hipsters discovered it? Go here and know what you should order. Prior reviews sound like people who love Starbucks - sure, go to Stewart's. Nice place, but not as authentic as Kayuta. read more

Since it's called a Drive In I assumed food would be quick. Man was I wrong. Not even really sure why it's called a Drive in since you have go inside to order food. They have a dining room, a counter, and picnic tables outside. We went inside to place our order and paid. I assumed that they would bring our order outside to us when it was ready so I gave them a nice $8 tip. It later became apparent that was not the case. We ordered a burger, an individual pizza and chicken riggies and it took about 35 mins. The group after us who ordered like 15 burgers ended up eating before us because some kind of kitchen mixup. The food was decent but the service was awful. We'll never be back. read more

This establishment is awful. Other then one brunette worker the waitress sue is very rude and her daughter is not much better. They barley do there job and are no help. The food is no good and a dirty building in there. Doesn't look to bad on the outside but the inside is awful. I know someone who got fired from there for absolutely no reason. The owner is no help and just went outside to smoke the whole time we were there. He yelled at all of us to where and mask and was the only person not wearing one in the restaurant.The food took way to long and was way over priced. read more

I was going to write that it was the worst meal ever but was corrected by my son who said that the food was edible so gave it 2 stars (but that is pushing it). We stopped on the way up to the Adirondacks on 6/30 for lunch because I had been there before and it was good. Not this time. As the previous poster said they were short staffed - wow does this happen a lot at this place or what. We had 2 waitresses for the whole dining room but even they were having a hard time with it. We ordered 2 burgers - one blue cheese burger and one swiss and mushroom - thinking who could screw up a burger. Well yup you guessed it, they did. My burger was delivered wrong (only had american cheese on it). Both burgers were cooked until they were like hockey pucks. I asked about the mix up in my order and she brought me a bowl of mushrooms to put on myself that were STONE COLD. Yuck! My son ordered the chicken fingers and they were edible and my daughter ordered the chicken wrap which was 90 percent lettuce and 10 percent chicken. Service was very slow and the food was not that great. I highly doubt that we will stop there again. Also the prices are high for what you get. With my husband's burger he ordered the mac salad and got this tiny cup full - really for the price they should have given him a sizable portion. A nice little place to stop before you head up into the mountains. Good lunch selection and a wide variety of ice cream. Prices are much cheaper than any of the tourist traps. If you are looking for a quick bite and an affordable price this is a good place to stop. read more

Kayuta is an oasis off RT 12. Stopped in for lunch and noticed their "specials". On the list was Chicken and Biscuits. Ordered this special and was completely pleased. The lunch was perfect. I've stopped here many times before and was never disappointed. If you're there for only ice cream, they have it all. I would recommend their chocolate milkshake. A work of art.... read more

I still gave them 3 stars because they let me choose my ice cream flavors(even though there were only 4 hard ice cream flavors and 3 soft). This was an excellent stop for us, clean, friendly and tasty. Our waitress was very friendly and recommended the fresh fried halibut sandwich plate or dinner platter and it was yummy. It came with a huge piece of moist, crunchy batter fried fish and two sides. I really enjoyed the macaroni salad and had no need to add seasoning. I would not hesitate to eat here again and recommend it to anyone looking to eat in the area. We didn't get any desert, but I was eyeing the floats and shakes menu. Coke floats are heaven to me. The front of the building is the ice cream parlour. They have scoop ice cream ( 4 flavors) and soft serve( a dozen or so). The do floats, shakes, flurries and sundaes.
