A real struggle on graduation weekend: Party of 12, Saturday night. We were told that it wasn't going to be a prix fixe menu as we were a party of under 12 when the reservation was booked (we asked). It was. Selection was somewhat limited particularly for the vegetarians but the waitress said that they could swap veggies in for the trout in the risotto. They didn't. It was just risotto. Potato leek soup. So salty that it was inedible. Like sea water salty. Three of us sent it back. NY Strip. Boring and clearly hadn't been seasoned before cooking (ironic). Not quite cold but really, really close. A little tiny ramekin of chimichurri sauce which I was supposed it make it interesting or tasty I guess. It was neither. The whipped potatoes were delicious. Desert was a borderline interminable wait. And then they served gelato and sorbet to four of us. Think milkshake. A thin, runny milkshake, approaching soup. The food runners and waitress were so embarrassed they couldn't look at us when they dropped the desert and ran. Who lets ice scream, posing as soup out of the kitchen. It used to be a quaint little place with fantastic food ... And now, an overpriced, industrial'ish place with sub-par food (although the owners are clearly cashing out, leaning on its prior reputation). Their menu consists of delicious American flair options. I truly don't think you could go wrong with any appetizer or entree of your choosing. For our starter we ordered the fried meatballs, fried cheese curds and the tomato & burrito plate. Every single dish was wonderful! For our entrees we chose the chicken katsu and their scallops. The chicken katsu was flavorful, juicy, breaded perfectly and topped with the most delicious sauce I've ever had on a chicken sandwich. My dinner date stated the scallops were cooked to perfection! We ended our evening with dessert & cocktails and as you can imagine from this review they were also very delicious! I would also like to highlight our waitress Mia. Enjoyed our time here. Very cool interior and decor. If you have a chance while here go next door to train station. Drinks were good, and bartender had us try some bacon fat rendered whiskey - it was amazing. Food was good, but they had tons of issues with our orders/checks. We were a large group and separated checks. I'll give them benefit of the doubt. They also accommodated our large group with seating in back room, which wasn't even done helpful and appreciated. Arrived right on time for our dinner reservation. The hostess departed to seat a group of 6. It was several minutes before someone else came to greet us. The food is great, and honestly Tailor and the Cook is one of my faves in the area. Their food always please me, it is somehow different and unique on its own way. Restaurants often get busy during peak hours esp on weekend and we've experienced that tonight. I wont go into details but one piece of advice, when you work in customer service, dont walk with sarcasm in your sleeve. Sorry is a short word but it is powerful. But big thanks to CJ, Raisa and the other gentleman who de-escalate the situation. Will i go back to this place? Absolutely yes!! Great spot to meet up with friends halfway in between Schenectady and Syracuse. I got a pistachio latte and the trout Eggs Benedict and they were fabulous! Can you say fiddleheads!? This is a really nice restaurant that's thought through its environs and culinary concepts carefully, providing a variety of dishes that are seasonal and really tasty. The burrata with mixed greens (including fiddleheads!) bacon, croutons was a real delight, with a variety of flavors and textures bursting with each taste. The burrata was creamy on the inside, and extremely fresh. The only point to pick on here was that the croutons seemed doused with dressing, and that there was a tad too much dressing in the dish. A few more greens could have balanced the other textures as well. Otherwise, excellent, and my favorite dish. The risotto (mushroom broth, also lots of fiddleheads!) was really tasty as well. The texture was smooth, despite (I think) not having a cheese component inside. I wished there were a tad stronger mushroom flavor in the dish, but it did a lot with minimal components. The fried ramps countered texturally the softer risotto, but to me they weren't recognizable as ramps any longer. I would have been fine with fresh ramps. The fiddleheads were fresh! The meatloaf with mash potato and side of fiddleheads with caramelized gravy and ketchup gravy was the most flavorful. The meat was multi textured and the sauce was delicious. The chives on top were a simple but nice touch. Overall highly recommended! read more

This is not the first time at this restaurant favorite but it is the first time at their new location. Still the same great food but definitely a different feel. The old place was small, quaint and had a homey vibe. The new location had more of an upscale, city vibe with all the noise that comes with it. However as I said this change did not affect the food, everything was delicious from the cheese board we started with, the Caesar with scallops my husband had, the GF shrimp and pasta fish I had, or the macaroni and cheese or fried chicken sandwich my daughter ordered. What a magnificent dining experience! To begin with, the room we were in was elegant, tastefully decorated and lighted, and with stimulating artwork. We were a party of 14. Before anything was ordered, they brought charcuterie boards to the table, which had, in addition to an assortment of cheeses and cold cuts, chicken liver pate! What a delightful surprise! It was rich and full of flavor, fresh, which is essential with chicken liver, and served alongside roasted almonds soaked in truffle oil and toast points. Craisins and soppressata with crackers as well. All of the ordered appetizers were spectacular. The chef sent out an amuse bouche of smoked seasoned beets on individual forks. The entrées were all very well received. If you ordered the filet mignon rare, you actually got it rare. Same with the salmon. The sides and vegetables were all beautifully cooked and perfectly seasoned. The wait staff knew the menu, knew the ingredients, and were eager to serve. The mixed drinks were prepared perfectly. The wine list is more than adequate and the selection of whiskey was impressive. From the appetizers to the desserts to the coffee, everything met or exceeded our expectations. There is serious talent in this restaurant. I have been coming to Utica regularly for years and this is my first time in this restaurant and everyone at my table I can assure you will be coming back. read more

I really really liked this place. It was beautiful and the menu was so interesting. I loved that they had such great vegetarian choices. When I see that I always choose it because it is unusual to find good vegetarian options. I had the watermelon radish "pastrami" Reuben which was a fantastic combo and delicious & I loved it and would order it again....but.....it wasn't very pastrami like, it needed that peppery edge or something more smokey. I also had the cheesecake with a berry sauce and fresh berries which was quite good, a bowl of fries which were great fries but over salted, a bowl of perfectly dressed hydroponically grown lettuces...and..... the margarita I started with was in fact perfect! The borscht had so many layers of yumminess-both refreshing & quite beautiful. I also had the Ceasear my only complain was the dressing was a bit watered down-but the greens were local & tender-included actual anchovies-Yay! Finally the trout/miso entree was loaded with flavor-and the trout-cooked perfectly & so tender & delicate. Thank you, chef, for an amazing meal. In a world where restaurants have been closing & excellence is hard to find-you knocked it out of the park! I had never paid that much for a top shelf martini. It was more than my burger. My second was the Smashburger and side Caesar. The burger comes with only one patty, so very thin. A great find! The building is beautiful, interior and exterior. The menu has so many interesting options, it is difficult to choose. Smashed crispy potatoes with blue cheese were so tasty. We also enjoyed sweet potatoes with burrata and cranberries. Both were delicious, beautifully presented. Drink menu and wine list are extensive. We finished with carrot cake which was unlike any other i have had. Dense but light flavorful cake, artistically plated. A very nice way to end a truly delicious dining experience. Wow, it's been a long time that my mom and I have been trying to come here (25yrs, lol). The hours haven't worked out for my train arrival or departure times as they use to open at 5pm. The 3pm made it that much more feasible to stop by and celebrate my mom's birthday today. The menu looks great, supporting most dietary needs. Definitely will be back for dinner one of these days. The space is huge, so you don't have to worry about being right next to people when you dine, which is great. Overall this place is a grand slam for the city and the neighborhood! read more

Visited the new location for the first time with some Utica friends. We arrived about 10 min early for our 7:30 reservation. They asked us to be seated in a small waiting area. At 7:32pm, the host comes over letting us know there was a delay and offered us a high top or a free round of drinks if we wanted to wait. We chose to wait, thinking it odd he had offered drinks so quickly. Turns out the wait was almost half an hour. Once seated, we ordered salads that came quickly, all were delicious. After a fairly long wait, long enough to think our food should be ready, a waitress appeared to say they did not have the ingredients to make their Thai shrimp dish. Ok, switch to the Bolognese. Another 10 min or so and the newly ordered Bolognese and two other dishes appear. Runner drops them off and dashes away, no acknowledgment that my scallop dish is missing. After another 5 minutes, my dish appears on an incredibly hot plate - either fresh out of the dishwasher or from sitting on a warmer. No mention of the wait for it to arrive. As we start to eat, our waitress stops by to say along with the free round of drinks, they will comp the Bolognese as well since the original dish was not available. Nice of them and the person who had ordered the Thai dish tried to refuse it as he enjoyed his Bolognese but the took it off anyway. The food was delicious, service prompt and they did try to make things right by comping us for the slipups so I will give four stars with a warning to readers that you may need to bring your patience to have a favorable experience. read more

I have been to this restaurant several times but mostly at the former location. I have to say that the current location has tremendous decor and allows for much more seating and dinner options. The current menu covers a wider audience than the original menu(s). However, having said that, The Tailor and the Cook has taken a big step back. While it used to have a completely unique menu that emphasized farm-to-table items, there appears to be a priority now on attracting customers with all preferences rather than focusing on a select group of eaters who enjoy fancy, gourmet, elegant dining. To be honest, I felt that the restaurant does not stand above the crowd. I also felt that the service has taken a big step back. I had noticed this in December when I went for the first time at the current location. Previously, the maitre d', servers, and cleanup crew were top-notch. That is not the case anymore at the current location. We had to ask for additional water three times, and rather than have one person take our orders and bring out the food, we had several people involved. Thus, it did not have the friendly appeal that the original place had. When I first started going here, attention to detail was pristine. Bread was hand-delivered to us, everyone received salads, and the server was well-versed on the menu, including drinks and desserts. During the pandemic, the restaurant switched to smaller plates that I did not like as well as what was on the original menu, but at least the food quality stayed the same. Now the quality of the service and food itself appears to be going down. Just for example regarding the food,, the "Nice Salad" 3 of us ordered had wilted greens, and cashews were on the salad rather than the hazelnuts that the menu said. Thank goodness none of us is allergic to cashews. If I had never been to The Tailor and the Cook before this last time, I may have still given it 5 stars. However, it is simply not to the standards it had at one time. Hopefully it can return to that status before too long. read more

This is a review for the new location on Main St. The move happened November 2023. We had a dinner on the first Thursday in January 2024. We visit Utica often because we have family in the area. We had been to the old location and always enjoyed our dining experience. The renovation of the space for the new location is impressive. The space is divided in to a bar area with seating and a dining room. We ate in the dining room. The ceilings are high and the space has a modern upscale feel. The room was pretty full of customers.. Impressive for a weeknight in early January when people tend to stay home after all the holiday partying. The service was attentive and professional. The menu is one page with a mix of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pasta and full plates. I liked that some dishes had small and large sizes. Many time I find the full plate portion size is too much for my appetite. We shared a cheese board and plate of fries as an appetizer. One person had the Thai Curry Bowl, another the Open Face Steak Sandwich and the last person orderd the meatloaf. We all enjoyed our selections. But somehow it just didn't seem as special as the former location. The prices are reasonable but the menu choices seem more ordinary. In the past I thought the menu selections were more distinctive. The food quality is great. But the menu selections less inspirational. Still they provide quality food for an enjoyable dining experience. read more

I ordered a salad and a pasta dish without mushrooms. The dish came filled with mushrooms (I'm allergic) and my salad never came. The waitress never came back to the table. The manger saw I was unhappy with my meal and came over to ask what the matter was. I explained the situation. 10 minutes later the waitress came over profusely apologizing. She offered to remake everything and bring the salad. At this point we were 30 minutes into our meal. I said I had no interest in eating any more, and she offered to wrap a new dish to go. Great farm to table restaurant in Utica and it brings a higher end restaurant to the area. The menu changes base on what is available at the market, but that makes the experience so much better. This place is racist. The servers are manager gaslit and harassed the only black family in the restaurant, on commencement weekend. The food immediately made one member of the party with a dairy allergy sick, and the staff kept denying it could have been their mistake. The washrooms were out of tissue and the server brought a roll of toilet paper to the table. Then while taking a picture of the party the server said "say lactose!". Petty, mean, vindictive. This is not hospitality. I've been a Yelp user for more than a decade. I don't post reviews because I have more important things do to. But this needed to be noted publicly.
