We had an awesome visit and meal here on our visit back to central NY to visit friends and family. I had the steak salad and it was off the charts delicious. Mrs had an American burger that looked equally great. This will be a must stop on all future trips back to NY.

OMG I cannot even begin to describe how phenomenal this place is!!! We had heard of the Alamo but hadn't had the chance to try it yet. We were meeting friends for dinner and pulled up and the parking lot was packed so we were like hmm that's a good sign. The restaurant has a great esthetic with a tin ceiling, taps lining the walls, pictures of the past and so much more!!! So much history in this place too. Back to the food! First of all the beer, whiskey and drink selections were totally unexpected. They have an insane number of whiskeys and my fiancé was in heaven! I was able to get a local Great Lakes Beer on tap (I was born and raised in Cleveland so I was pumped). We got Thai Chili Calamari for an appetizer and from the presentation to the taste this is not your typical bar food. The calamari was cooked just right and the sauce was not too spicy and just so delicious! My fiancé got the fish fry and I got the steak salad and we switched halfway through. The steak was perfectly cooked and the romaine lettuce was grilled which had such a great char which enhanced the flavor of the dish. There was at least 1 whole avocado on the salad too. The fish's fry was great too! Not greasy at all and so we'll breaded! Plus the coleslaw was very impressive! I highly recommend this places to anyone in Central, NY! They have indoor and outdoor seating and a crazy big menu and drink selection. There is something for everyone here :)

Oh my goodness. This place was a happy accident that we stumbled across and it was so good! The atmosphere is cute and the waitresses were wonderful. The young lady running the bar went above and beyond to get our youngest's order exactly the way she wanted it... tenders with buns and cheese fries with actual cheese... not cheese sauce. The lobster roll, Texas burger, & chicken ceasar wrap were all SO GOOD! The sweet potato fries were the best I've had anywhere and were from SC. Highly recommend this great find for lunch.

A 5 star meal at a 3 star price. This place is a hidden gem with a great atmosphere. I am a critical reviewer, having said that I have eaten these several times and left full and happy. I highly recommend!

The Tavern on the Gorge boasted a friendly staff, good bar food and a welcoming atmosphere with a good assortment of beverage offerings. I happened to catch this place during a night whereby they had comedians from NYC. The comedians were very good and got plenty of laughs poking fun at the Afirondack lifestyles and values. The patrons appreciated this ribbing and a great night of unexpected fun was a much needed release for me and my wife. We will return on our next trip to the North Country to recapture this homespun experience.

Chalk it up to Upstate, NY doing what Upstate, NY does best: Cold Beer and Chicken Wings. And in…read morethis case, it should be Chicken Wings first and cold beer second. You can certainly pull up a bar stool and drop a Utica Club in a can or get a Saranac draft. No issue there. But what you really want to be doing is ordering wings. Seriously...get in car...drive to Prospect...order wings. Look, you can get caught up in wings from Buffalo, Rochester, New York City (not SF because there is not a good wing in this entire city...although at least Kezar makes an effort)...whatever. They all take a back seat to what you get in almost every establishment in Syracuse and Utica. Let's put it this way...it's HARD to be at the top or near the top (which Tavern on the Gorge is) in the wing category in Central NY. Just WAAAY too much competition and people in CNY like their wings. But Tavern on the Gorge...they get a high seat in the Top 5 category and my debate upon leaving the bar was whether or not they were number 1. Wing sauce is apparently a tough thing. I don't think it's a tough thing, but to most bars and restaurants it's essentially the toughest thing they must do. NOTHING varies more establishment to establishment than a chicken wing. Certainly there are some places trying to put their own spin on it (90% of these folks are just making a mistake btw). Not a good idea fyi. The wing sauce at TOTG is as close to perfect as your going to get. Depending on who you talk to, you'll get differing opinions on wing sauce. But in general, the diehards know the base recipe and an ingredient that can have a major impact is butter/margarine. So those wings sauces you see that have sort of a heavier texture (heavy being almost creamy)...they crank up the butter/margarine. Not a bad thing. The place in direct competition with TOTG does this and those wings are ridiculous as well. But TOTG does things a little differently and what you end up with is a sauce with slightly less creaminess and amazing tang. And they don't skimp on the heat...in fact, they dial it to perfection. Don;t worry about going in and having to order mild because you don't. If you don;t want to go hot...go medium...that's fine as well. But just know that Upstate does it's wings the right way...in a fryer, with ridiculously good sauce. TOTG has it nailed. Great place to grab a couple of UC's or a Saranac and eat wings. These are great wings. Period.

A real struggle on graduation weekend:…read more Party of 12, Saturday night. We were told that it wasn't going to be a prix fixe menu as we were a party of under 12 when the reservation was booked (we asked). It was. Selection was somewhat limited particularly for the vegetarians but the waitress said that they could swap veggies in for the trout in the risotto. They didn't. It was just risotto. Potato leek soup. So salty that it was inedible. Like sea water salty. Three of us sent it back. NY Strip. Boring and clearly hadn't been seasoned before cooking (ironic). Not quite cold but really, really close. A little tiny ramekin of chimichurri sauce which I was supposed it make it interesting or tasty I guess. It was neither. The whipped potatoes were delicious. Desert was a borderline interminable wait. And then they served gelato and sorbet to four of us. Think milkshake. A thin, runny milkshake, approaching soup. The food runners and waitress were so embarrassed they couldn't look at us when they dropped the desert and ran. Who lets ice scream, posing as soup out of the kitchen. It used to be a quaint little place with fantastic food ... And now, an overpriced, industrial'ish place with sub-par food (although the owners are clearly cashing out, leaning on its prior reputation). Unfortunate. $85 a head, $1,500 all in with drinks and tip.
