As usual, I was the designated driver for a night out with friends. Was shocked at how many people we crammed in my car for a night out. Reminded me of one of those clown cars you see in the movies. Started out at Koup's and ended the night at DeMatteo's. Was hoping to get a bite to eat but had just missed the kitchen. Can't speak to drinks other than my diet soda.. LOL !!! though my friends were happy with the drinks. The service was great. This eatery/bar has been around forever and is steeped in the rich history of Rome though you would never know it unless you really looked at the photos on the wall. DeMatteo's has been renovated and the bar/grill is really beautiful inside. I have long heard stories of the free peppers and amazing cheap hamburgers. ZERO vegetarian options. Got a full burger menu, but unlike every other restaurant in the country, DO NOT have a veggie burger on there, not even Morning Star or Garden Burger. And all the salads had meat except the side salad which of course has no protein. I found the "Black and Blue Salad" and asked if they had a veggie substitute for the steak. Blank stare from the dumb teenage waitress. "Chickpeas?" I asked. Another blank stare. She can't seem to think! Clearly, I had to think my way out of this and finally asked "Well, can you at least double the blue cheese and leave off the steak?" I don't know if I got double blue cheese or not, but it was a good salad. Oh, and the service. Very poor, very slow. We learned they only had three staff that night - cook, bartender, and teenage waitress. But no one told us there'd be slow service that night, we learned the hard way. My friend's second drink never arrived. We had to go up to the bar to get it! And the place was quite far from full, maybe 1/4 of tables taken up. My two rating is because it was below average on choices for vegetarians and slow service. Both of these were below average and they are critical elements of a dining experience. First time to this Rome original. Rather unassuming exterior and relatively standard bar interior. Plenty of space and seating areas, an outdoor patio awaits for the warmer months. Prompt greeting by restaurant staff, and fast service. Pretty impressive, as waitstaff aren't so plentiful in the new normal. The food - so, I went purely by my coworker's recommendations- and that's how we played it. Started with the peppers and cheese - hot Hungarian longs with an oil and chili paste from what I could taste, served with several slices of provolone and thin sliced Italian bread. This was spectacular! Word to the wise, the oil can squirt out of the peppers pretty hot! For the main event, I went for the "World Famous Burger". A 1/2 lb burger on a luscious sesame seed bun. The burger was grilled to perfection and perfectly medium rare - the only thing that I would note is that it could have had more seasoning to the burger itself. Heard from multiple people about their burgers and they didn't disappoint. Cooked perfectly - medium rare!!! Other places you ask for medium rare, you get a hockey puck. We were hungry after visiting the Fort Stanwix so we decided to stop by here for lunch. This place is definitely full of mostly locals having drinks. We ordered their cheeseburger and grilled ham & cheese sandwich. They do not serve any fries here so our meals came with chips. The food were just decent. The buns on the burger were a bit hard. Great place to grab a beer for happy hour. I am also a huge fan of their burgers; definitely grab some mac salad on the side and you will not be disappointed. The bar are can get crowded, especially during nights with live music but there's a great patio area with a ton of space (and an extra bar). Be prepared to wait a little bit on live music nights, but I find it's worth the wait! read more

Mostly a bar but they also serve burgers and chicken sandwiches with rotating specials as well. The food is good. They don't serve fries, only potato chips, which is a miss as far as I'm concerned. If you want a good beer selection, then it's a great place. They have a solid selection of craft beers on tap and full bar service, too. Generally the service is good, but when they're busy it can sometimes be hard for them to keep up. They have an appetizer plate with local Italian bread, hot peppers and sliced provolone that's outstanding. In addition they have a great selection of beers on tap. But they have remodeled inside and added a beautiful patio. The ambiance is greatly improved. Famous burgers with long hot peppers are absolutely delicious! The grill gives a char that can't be beat and they are served hot and fresh. This is a definite landmark in town and always a favorite stop. The beer choice is vast and wines are cold and refreshing. The staff are friendly and welcoming! I'm not sure how this place gets three stars. Maybe this is based on old reviews but then again I've been going to this place for years. The owner and staff are solid. This is a bar so you get a slight twist on Italian but it is bar food. You cannot go wrong with the burger. It's fresh ingredients and great every time. You also can't go wrong with the chipotle chicken or the cappi or roast beef. If you like very hot peppers you can add their long hots and sauce or have it as a side with fresh provolone. Their sides are always very good and it's a lively atmosphere. Entertainment every Friday night and they continue to expand the outside to accommodate more people. Visited one of our favorites places for a burger on December 31st about 12:30. The food is always exceptional along with the service but not on this occasion. Our waitress Hannah was without a doubt one of the rudeness individuals I've ever encountered. Upon arrival she simply tossed menus on our table and kept walking to the next table. After quite a wait she came back for drink orders. After ordering and receiving our food two out of the six orders were completely wrong. My father tried to get her attention and she simply kept walking. Her next trip into the back room he was able to alert her that he received an Eastside burger but ordered a bacon cheeseburger. Her response "yeah ok" and kept walking leaving the burger there on the table. At this point I got up to use the rest room only to see her standing at the bar texting on her phone. I couldn't even believe it. Her next time in the back room he again said something as she states "yeah I know." Well if you know why are you leaving the incorrect burger sitting there and not at least advising us that they are working on making the correct burger. Finally after all this my father receives the correct burger. My mother's burger arrived about 5 minutes after all ours did so we waited till hers arrived to eat. Her burger arrives and is incorrect! So rather than deal with everything my father had just dealt with, she just ate something she didn't order. I had never seen this waitress before but she had absolutely no personality at all and was extremely rude. Thinking she may have just been having a bad day I reached out to others that dine there frequently. All have had similar experiences with her. read more

DeMatteo's isn't as much a restaurant as it is a bar. They have some good bar burgers, but that's about it.

I went to this restaurant and 11/18/14. I was in Rome New York with a coworker and we ordered chili which is okay and two burgers I ordered the Southwest burger and my coworker ordered a regular burger . When we received our burgers bit into mine to discover it was raw / bright red on the inside , as my coworkers was as well. We sent the burgers back watch the bartender remove the burger's and place them back on the grill one of which I had bitten. After 2 min the burgers show back up and the bartender tells me our pitcher of beer will be removed from the bill. We inspect our burgers again and they are both bright red inside still. We both left . I recommend the Heath inspector pay a visit to this place. read more

We stopped in yesterday for lunch and had two really great sandwiches and cold drinks. My roast beef was rare (just like I like it!) and my girlfriend had grilled chicken with smoked ham was great also. It was very comfortable and the waitress was exceptional. The only thing that surprised us was the lack of any Italian items on the menu. After all: DeMatteos and in Rome!?! This is a place for tavern food and as such is at the top of its competition. When I pass thru Rome this is the only place I'll stop for a sandwich . The food is very fresh , I usually get the chipotle chicken panini with roasted red peppers -Love it , they also have a nice back room with a fireplace and large tv. Very friendly people!! read more

We stopped here while passing through. Needed lunch & wanted something good . We both had the Eastside Cappy & it was excellent . The Cappy is sliced fresh for each sandwich & they lightly brush the ciabatta roll with butter before grilling it on the press. Out of this world! We shared a large potato salad which was just how my mother in law used to make it! The Mac salad looked great too! Burgers look good. Traveling from out of town for work. On a Monday night myself and 5 coworkers went in at 8:45pm for dinner and drinks. The place was very clean and well lit. Approximately 10 people in the restaurant with 4 being served at the bar. We were met by a waitress, I asked if the kitchen was still open she replied "It opens at 9pm for burgers and chips only. You are welcome to wait for 15 minutes." The bartender then said "it's ok order what you want, except salads or cold cuts." We asked for the food and alcohol to be on separate checks. At that point we were told they only accept cash.(Which was ok, we just were unable to use the company credit card for our meals.) We decided to stay and they crew ordered a southwest burger (medium), 4 southwest chickens sandwiches and a chipotle chicken sandwich. We then ordered beers and they were out of glasses,(with only 16 people in the establishment) One of us was lucky got a chilled glass and the rest of us got solo cups. While cooking our meals, the hostess/cook/bartender informed us that she messed up the chipotle chicken and made it to be southwest. (The person who was receiving it said "that was fine and it wasn't a big deal and just finish it that way.") During the time we were waiting the owner and another bartender were very unpleasant, they stood in-front of us sitting at the bar, while sorting out a register problem. They were rude to the hostess/cook/bartender that was helping us, about not turning down the lights properly. Once we received our food... the burger was cooked medium well and instead of the southwest mayo there was a raspberry mayo on it. All the chicken sandwiches were cooked through but all had the same raspberry mayo. One also had two top buns and another two bottoms. At this point we didn't want to hang out for things to be recooked... (Other than the raspberry flavoring the food was good.) We decided that we would finish our beer and Pay our tab in cash. (Luckily there was an ATM in the bar..$3 sure charge.) We completely understand that places have "Off Nights" but we would all NOT recommend going there if this is a usual thing. We left and went to Applebee's to enjoy some more adult beverages and appetizers. They lost out on us sticking around and spending our out of town money in a local owned business. read more
