The host and bartender were wonderful even though they were overwhelmed. Our server, on the other hand, was irritated by our very existence. No hello, she just dropped a pitcher of water and paper cups in the center of the table. My husband added a sided salad to his order and she rolled her eyes at him. Cute, cozy setting on the backside of the lake off the beaten path. Quiet ambience and rustically furnished. We started off with some wings. Dan chose maple bourbon and they were sweet and tasty. When we order wings I always go for the veggies first; tonight we got four celery sticks on the side. Here is where I met my first disappointment. I knew with my first bite something was off with the celery. I bit into another one, same thing, they were limp. Limp, bendable, plasticky celery is simply disgusting. For the first time ever we didn't eat all the celery. I showed the waitress when she took our appetizer plates away, she apologized and said she would inform the kitchen. Dan ordered Chicken's Revenge with fries which he upgraded for $1.00 to Chrissy's hot fries. He was happy with his meal. He gave me some of the fries and they were quite tasty. I ordered the Salad Dianne. The salad has good potential. It was composed of greens with grape tomatoes, hard boiled egg, bacon, grilled chicken, onions, peppers, and blue cheese crumbles. The lettuce was a mix of iceberg and better greens, which was fine, however a significant amount of the lettuce was past its prime. One of the most important qualities of a good meal to me is freshness; I don't want wilted, slimy, brown veggies in my salad, or ever for that matter. Also, there were several pieces of the white, hard pieces of lettuce that usually get thrown away because they're not very enjoyable to eat. There were some shredded carrots in the salad and a couple of them were brown and not good any more. One of the cherry tomatoes was good, but three of them were mushy and weird when I bit into them. I knew I should have just changed my order when I asked if the salad dressings were homemade and I was told no. Originally I had wanted dessert, but I skipped it after my less than satisfactory meal. Our waitress, Amber, was nice and friendly. I still gave them three stars because I hope that my meal (and the celery) was just an oversight. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll be back to give them a second chance. read more

Horrible. I hate to leave bad reviews but they were just pathetic. The food was completely tasteless. They served the salad, appetizers and main entree at the same time. The wings were like rubber. They took them back but instead stuck them in an oven to make them more crispy instead of redoing the order properly. The marinara sauce was like water. It used to be good, not sure what happened. The fried fish was soggy. While I understand people are understaffed you can still serve a meal properly and cook it properly. This was just a horrible experience. read more

We have been going to this restaurant from the time it was owned by Christy. It was later bought and owned by Diane. And now by the current owners. It really has gone downhill. My buddy who has been going there as long as me has stopped going because the food has really degraded, the service is horrible, and they continue to jack up prices. I am now following suit and will not be going any longer. It is a shame as I loved it before and I am a big supporter of the local businesses as I have a place right down the street. I hear the current owner wants out and that is probably a good thing. I would seriously think twice about eating here while it is under the current ownership. It currently attracts a crowd that finds it appropriate to act like they were raised in a barn, screaming, swearing (if you have kids definitely don't bring them), and all around has not respect for anyone else around them. Clearly the current owner doesn't care as they appear desperate to take every dollar possible which is why they are pricing themselves out of the market. I am highly disappointed that I find myself at this position but really hope a new owner comes in. read more

Good restaurant! Big boothes to sit in. Service is good...easy to talk to and provides good food recommendations. I got a chocolate martini...which was just okay. I don't think I'd order it again. Tomato basil soup was Great! I ordered a bowl which was more than enough. Then ate a blue burger with bacon cooked medium. The edges were burnt but still edible. Overall the food was good but nothing memorable. The overall experience was enjoyable. I'll be back and I would recommend this restaurant to others. read more

Red Dog Tavern has been a staple for us when we are in Old Forge. They have done a great job of staying open and available throughout the pandemic. Service is always friendly and prompt and they truly make you feel like family. I love their quesadillas and chicken wings- some of the best around. Salads are also very big! The downside this year has been their lack of draft beers but the service has been slower with less travel so they seemed less able to sell through drafts as opposed to other places closer to town. read more

The hospitality is real ,genuine and sincere. The brews on tap are crisp and cold and served with the brightest smiles. The menu has so many delicious temptations the devil need apply. The angels in the kitchen make honest to goodness soul satisfaction. Had the Shrimp Quesadillas .Perfection filled the plate!! The owner himself greeted us and made us welcome along with our very attentive and gracious bartender. I will return for my favorite Saranac LegacyIPA and to try the menu temptations. We have spent summers in the area for the last 40+ years. I can't remember exactly when we stumbled upon this hidden gem. But it's been a while. I know we've seen at least a couple ownership changes over the years, but it's amazing how the food and overall experience has never faltered. All the other reviews about the wings are absolutely true. Worth the price of admission. But don't let that keep you from testing out the rest of the menu. The food is truly superb. read more

Went on a snowy day. Waitress saw us come in, and we stood and waited for a couple of minutes before we finally picked our own table. We could see her eating in the kitchen through the window on the door. She was licking her fingers when she went and got our menus. We ordered a pitcher of beer and she brought 4 dirty glasses. Went to the bar to get clean ones. Bartender was pretty cool about it. Food was okay but a pretty limited menu. Flags on the ceiling were cool save the confederate one. read more

Summer trip to Adirondacks and to the Dog. I went in for the ribs as i always do but they were sold out. Thats okay because I had the wings (maple bourbon sauce) and they were excellent. Even better was the clam chowder. I don't think I've had chowder since a trip to the beach 5 years ago. Anyway, this chowder was awesome. Loaded with the good stuff. Red Dog Tavern is known for their Armageddon Wings, but they really don't want you to eat them. Because they are hot. The hottest wings I've ever had. But even better are their Nuclear wings. Which are hot and incredibly tasty. The way to experience the Armageddon wings is to order the nuclear wings and a side of Armageddon sauce. Eat your last wing dipped liberally in the sauce and enjoy the endorphin rush. The draft beer selection is terrible, but they have a well stocked bar. The menu is not vast but all of the food was good. And the Nuclear wings are among the best wings you will ever have. And the Armageddon Wings, well, they are the hottest BY FAR I've ever encountered. If you don't believe me know this: if you eat ten in 20 minutes they are free. The owner told me she has had 11 people pull that off in 9 years. Nobody else comes close. Go here if you like hot wings. And the rest of the menu is quite tasty as well. read more

Unfortunately, this is not a great spot for families. I expect businesses in this part of the world to be a bit quirky, and this one certainly fits that bill. It's small, and it was hot, noisy and crowded when we were there. The parking lot is very tiny, but that doesn't matter, because it's apparently not for customers. Signs throughout proclaim "Employee Parking Only." Seriously. Customers evidently don't get to park in the parking lot. They have to park along the busy street, which is precisely what my wife and I did with our three young boys in tow. The menu also says something about this being a good opportunity for parents to teach their children proper restaurant behavior. Wow. I know we're technically patrons, but don't patronize me. The reason this doesn't get a single star is because the food was decent. My son got wings, two of which I managed to wrestle away from him. They were fried quite well, and the sauce, despite being the mild version, was very tasty. My bleu burger was also quite good. The meat was excellent and cooked just like I ordered. However, there was way too much bleu cheese, which made it far too rich and salty for my taste. My wife got the french onion soup, which was average at best (no crunchy topping). Her pulled pork was also quite average - fatty and not the least bit smoky. The service was slow and spotty. Our server came back only once during the meal to check on us and refill drinks. Mine sat empty for some time while I watched her stand there chatting with other employees. Overall, I was quite disappointed, and I won't be going back. read more

This place is a must-go any time my family are in the 50 mile radius, and my father is convinced I'll have my wedding rehearsal dinner here... or the reception. It's just that good. The stand-outs on the menu are the prime rib and the ribs, which are both only served on Saturday nights. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender, with just enough sauce and incredible sides (including the garlic mashed potatoes, which are to die for). The other menu stand out is the Roman Candle, stuffed with spicy sausage, cheese, peppers, and other heart-attack-inducing ingredients that I'd gladly shave a year off my life for. After a nice day at the water park my uncle suggested dinner at Red Dog Tavern- SO GLAD WE DID! First food review, then the wing sauce review. The atmosphere is typical Old Forge- Locals, Some summer locals and some just visiting for the weekend. We were told a 1/2 hour wait so we all got a drink at the bar and talked with some local's. It can be a little loud but that's the whole experience- as a party of 7 adults were par-taking in the laughing and being loud. We were seated with-in the 1/2hr time wait- Our waitress was Elisha. She was awesome- very attentive through our whole visit. We all order the Prime Rib- that came with garlic mashed potato's- (no side salad) We all order a side salad with it and also a mac n cheese balls for an app which were delish! We did not have to wait long for any of our food or drink's long for a party of 7. We were all pleased with our Prime Rib dinners... huge and all cooked to our liking. ***Wing Sauce** I have a few family members that like HOT things- so they wanted to try the hottest wing sauce they have- it will burn your skin if you get the sauce on you.... NO LIE! If you want to "try or taste" the wing sauce they will caution you that it's very hot and only let you try the sauce on a toothpick with a tiny bit on it. Well...... my family got what they wanted! It's something out of this world HOT! My cousins tongue hurt they next day after only putting a tiny bit on her tongue. Of course they have a t-shirt if you eat all 10 wings in 30 minutes kind of thing. Great atmosphere off of South Shore Road in Inlet, NY. Nice folks, always an enjoyable meal. The food here has great potential, and some portions of the menu really succeed. However, some of the offerings are not as strong. They do a HUGE platter of BBQ pork nachos. It is literally 5-pounds of food. While a 5-pound plate of nachos is a win-win, the BBQ pork is not the best ever. That said, they really do make a good effort with this dish. The pasta dishes are made-to-order and with chicken or shrimp they can do a number on a hungry stomach. Can't say much about dessert, but that's not a knock on quality, it's just that the gas tank is usually full by the time we finish the entrees. read more

I live in North Carolina but used to go Inlet / Eagle Bay every summer. When I go back I re-live my childhood and LOVE IT! I found the Red Dog Tavern about 10 years ago on a snowy day and it was awesome! Very cozy and Adirondack like! Be aware. this is NOT IN OLD FORGE. It is just outside of Inlet. They probably say it's Old Forge to get people in Old Forge to consider it. It IS worth the drive. I ALWAYS go there when I get back and think about it throughout the year. read more

Having a family camp on the 4th lake within walking distance makes this the easiest place for usto go but happens to be one of my favorites too. The hottest wings around but be careful. I have to write a mixed review. After a visit last year and some pretty bad food I didn't think I'd want to return. But after reading in the local paper that the Red Dog had new owners we thought we'd give it another try. The beer selection is pretty standard, but that's fine with me. We made a single order of 10 wings with a sweet/hot sauce that I believe was Sweet Revenge or something of that nature. It was insanely good. We actually ordered another 10. It is reminiscent of a sweet BBQ sauce that is laced with something hot. It's pretty thick and might benefit from being a bit thinner, but that's picking nits. Absolutely 5 stars for the food order. Unfortunately . . . there was the service. We ate at the bar and the lady tending bar was more interested in a gentleman that she apparently met during snowmobile season who came up to visit her in the summer. Much of our time there was listening to them plan their activities for the next couple of days as she ignored us. Her (minor) daughter was working the restaurant side but spent much of her time during our stay sitting at the bar & watching videos on her phone. She wasn't really a bundle of energy with cleaning & greeting guests. I think that if we'd received better service and seen some initiative out of both the lady and her daughter we'd have given the place a better score. The owners weren't there that night & I imagine that it would have looked much different had they been watching things. Will I return? Absolutely. The food has clearly improved and it's a delightful atmosphere. Personnel issues can easily be remedied with a bit more attention from owners so there is nothing fatal about it. Even if I never try anything else but the beer & wings it'll still be a required stop for your ADK visit. And the t-shirts are cool too. read more

Two years in row, bad service. Completely wrong dinner brought out, had to wait for what I ordered. Annoying, but was made right by a drink chip from who was assume was a manager. Good thing I had a drink comped, because for my other drink, they actually charged me an extra $2.50 for me to have my Manhattan "on the rocks." Having wanted to come here for a rather long time, may I say I was not disappointed. We ended up ordering some pasta with a cream based sauce, which rivals any I've ever had. Their fish cake special was equally as marvelous, the only fault to be found was it was a tad small, and finally the wings. Having heard of the Armageddon sauce in California I expected that the rumors were larger than life. It was too hot for me, the sauce had lived up to prior expectation. Kirsty's is amazing. The best Chicken wings I think that I have ever had. Burt's Garlic have the right amount of heat and garlic. They also have Delicious sandwiches (Pulled pork is sweet and spicy!), pastas, and a good assortment of appetizer/bar food. The waitstaff is friendly and while during the busier times there is a wait for a table and food the wait staff is always accommodating. They are open year round and really easy access during snowmobile season. Sadly Kirsty's is for sale but hopefully the recipes stay with the establishment. read more

UPDATED REVIEW: I visited the Red Dog Tavern one year after writing previous review. If you intend on dining in without doing the bar it's important to get to the restaurant when the first open for dinner otherwise you get jammed up in a crunched bar area waiting. We were served our beverages quickly and placed our order. I decided to order wings this time, Kids got kids meals and wife salad. In the menu it said the wings are served extra crispy which worried me a little bit I didn't say anything and went with the volcano sauce. I was very pleased. The sauce was very flavorful and the meat was very juicy. The children were pleased although they were getting a lot of extra energy out at the time. Wife's salad was a nice portion and the soup she ordered was freshly made. Overall much better experience food wise this time. The service was still very slow even though we were one of the first patrons. I guess that's to be expected with most establishments in the area as they are limited in size to serve guest. Gosh we love this place. Whenever we are in the area we stop in at least once. Great bar to sit at and have a beer or 4, or to sit down at a table and have a nice meal. Very warm and cozy in the winter. Parking is a hassle sometimes but not too bad. Park along the road if you have to. We've enjoyed each meal we have had here, and the great ambience and terrific service. Waitresses are always prompt and pleasant. Try this place out. read more
