First, I made the rookie mistake of popping by Keyes on a Sunday morning in the fall. The place was packed, there was a line - but I scored a counter seat right off, and placed my order for a biscuit with gravy, some corned beef hash, and a coffee. This would end up costing my $17 and change, expensive and not a good value. The food was served cold, clearly not made in house, and service was indifferent at best. Go someplace else, like one of the restaurants in Inlet, about 5 miles up canyon. Getting wait staff attention for some coffee was the first challenge and indication of the pending experience. The food took over 45 minutes to come out, even for such a simple order, and the 2 times I was able to grab attention for a coffee refill really felt like I was imposing on someone. The gravy arrived cold - not "was on the warmer for a while" cold, but "we just got this out of the walk-in" cold, and returned from a brief trip through a shower of microwaves barely warmed. The corned beef hash was clearly scooped out of a can on to the grill and was a small portion for the price. All while while trying to inject myself between wait staff and their indifference to get coffee, check, warmed gravy, water refill, etc. 7 minutes after leaving I drove past a few restaurants in Inlet, with less crowding and looking just as quaint as Keyes. I'll try there next time I'm through this area. Definitely not Keyes! read more

I have never spent any real time in the ADKs so I didn't know if there were even any real restaurants in this part of the state :) I was very pleasantly surprised to see the Keyes Pancake House right across from where I was staying! Inside, it's like a nearly arranged, very clean and friendly diner. Plenty of seating. I was invited to sit at the counter since I was a party of one and that was the perfect place to observe all the goings on. The staff was efficient and swift with its service. I wanted all the pancakes but also felt obligated to have a little protein, so I ordered an omelette and short stack of buckwheat pancakes. Thankfully my sweet server talked me into a single pancake because those things are huge. Easily 8" across and 1/2" thick, 100% delicious. The coffee refills were perfectly timed and the omelette hit the spot. Quick tip: If you want real maple syrup it's an extra cost, and if you use credit/debit they'll add 2.99% to your bill but these are both clearly stated on the menu. read more

Always go when we are in old forge for the chicken fried steak and eggs, it has become a tradition. Waitress was very kind recently, made sure to ask if I wanted hot sauce with it (which I would have forgotten to ask, but it's a must with that meal). Oh my! This place is always on our list of stops in Old Forge. The pancakes, to be honest, range from very good to excellent. I always ask them to combine the pecan and banana. We'll, this time it was phenomenal, so good I ordered a second one. The photo is that second one and not as much a work of art, but I really felt I needed to write about it. 9:09 am we arrived to Keyes with only two family's in front of us. 9:30 seven of us we were seated 4 Adults 2 children. 9:45 am drinks arrived and we ordered. No creamer on table, waited for someone to notice us waving the empty bowl around. 10:00 the creamer came. 10:30 no patrons in line at all and no food yet. 3 families who arrived after us of equal size were served. My husband got up and spoke to the waitress my daughter and I watched her put our order in late on the computer. 11:00 am no food, my husband got up we are sooo ready to leave!!! Waitress from another table offered us $20.00 off the entire bill. 11:15am food arrived cold, bagels hard as a rock, pancakes and waffle were room temperature. Strawberries for the waffle and pancakes were over ripe with plenty of soft spots. Sausage Gravy not the best. Eggs came out hot. The nostalgia is gone for good we have come to old Forge for over 20 yrs, this was always our breakfast place. It's too bad our Grands didn't have the great experience we once had. $135.00 -$20.00=$115.00 of our hard earned salaries. No tip. Other waitress were clearly way more attentive and on the ball! Pretty decent breakfast spot in Old forge! Ive been here a few times and it never disappoints. They are currently open for indoor and outdoor dining under COVID guidelines. They serve breakfast all day until close. Love the breakfast burritos. Always bomb. Pecan / apple waffles are delish also. Breakfast at Keyes was delicious! At first I was a little uncertain about the cleanliness of the restaurant as it had a very 'sticky' atmosphere and there was food and wrappers on the floor, our menus and table also had food stuck to them, but their staff was visibly cleaning and sweeping so I couldn't be bothered too much. I ordered the stuffed waffles with cinnamon apples and was a little disappointed when I discovered that the apples topping my waffles were canned or from a fruit cup, they didn't taste like cinnamon either, I'm not that disappointed in that though as it was truly very good. Service was pretty good. Our waiter was a amazing! He was middle aged gentleman who was super quick to get us our drinks and even gave us suggestions for what to do in the area, things that are not super touristy either but more local style, giving us a true Adirondack experience. Our only complaint was we were given a plate of plain pancakes instead of chocolate chip but we assumed it was a mix up in the kitchen as our waiter clearly stated "chocolate chip pancakes" when he placed the plate on our table, indicating that the waiter himself got the order correct it was just a mix up in the kitchen. We were also neglected our side of sausage, we didn't speak up though as we had already dug in and were getting full, but if we did say something I'm certain Keyes and our waiter would've definitely made it right. My husband and I can't go through Old Forge without stoping here. Its a food lighthouse. They are usually packed, but the wait is worth it. The waitstaff are massively friendly. They have every reason to be frustrated or overwhelmed, but everyone is good at their job. You would never know that waitstaff were busy. They make you feel welcome. Like family. And the Food! The homefries are seasoned. Not burned. Not greasy. I never have to ask for creamers. They fill up the creamers bowls like breathing. My husband had a Reuben. Got overcharged on our pancakes, all 3 of them. I personally asked how much a blubbery buckwheat pancake would be, was told $3.50, was charged $3.50 PLUS $1.75 for some blueberries! So did my friends on their regular pancakes! My friend ordered fries, but got home fries instead, I asked for mine extra crispy, there was still some raw ones in there, so not even cooked all the way, and they don't warn you about the pop refills not being free. On my way home I decided to stop here after driving by it for 20 or so years. I like pancakes and yelp gave it 4 Stars so why not. Well yelp may have this place a little over-rated maybe it's 3.5 stars but not 4. I got the short stack with blueberries, no other way to have pancakes in my opinion. Place is empty and service was fast. Pancakes came as seen in picture big and full of blueberries. Thought it was going to be a 4 to 5 star review. Then the coffee came. Honestly one of the worse cups of coffee I have ever had. Then the pancakes. The batter, blueberries and syrup were absolutely tasteless. The syrup has to be Sysco like. I worked in the restaurant industry as a cook for 6 years. I also cooked breakfast for 2 of them. I asked for maple syrup as an upcharge and they had none. What! A pancake house that doesn't have any real maple syrup. They cost $6.50. $2.50 for coffee. A little pricey for the quality. In the end my belly is full and it will be a drive by for the next 20 years. read more

This was a pretty good place to meet for breakfast. I was really impressed with their ability to accommodate my party of 11 on such short notice. Our waitress managed our orders with ease and even managed to separate checks without issue. Our food was hot and ready in record time and all cooked properly. I enjoyed the options to order and my children had plenty to choose from. This place is definitely older with a more rustic feel but even though it could use some updates, it really isn't needed. I felt that it was kept clean and operational and met all of our needs perfectly. A bunch of years ago I went here and loved it. This morning not so much. Our waitress was the only high point. She was friendly and seemed genuinely happy that we were there. The guy that cashed us out the register (the owner?) was the exact opposite. Seemed annoyed to take our money. Food left everything to be desired. Homefries were so dry that they crumbled on the fork. The eggs in the omelet we ordered were very weird. Like spongy and maybe not even real eggs? Seriously the strangest yellowish grayish color. The outside of my blueberry pancake was good. The inside wasn't fully cooked soooooooo... I'd skip this place. I am EXTREMELY underwhelmed with the quality of customer service in this establishment. Me and 10 of my friends came in for breakfast and we were treated like dirt. I am a Californian gal, born and bred and I have certain expectations. The food was great, but it's a shame that the service really let this place down. Also, my international friend who is from the U.K was treated terribly. The waitress gave every single person water, but my friend from the U.K, does the restaurant think English people don't need water? He left extremely dehydrated and sad, he cried for 10 minutes straight. The head waitress lady is very rude (the blonde one) and should rethink the way she treats her customers. First off. We went today around 12:30 for a late late breakfast. Got seated right away and was greeted by our waitress. She was very polite and accommodating. We ordered pancakes, meat, eggs etc. we got the food in a timely fashion and it was warm (ish). We started to eat and I had a clear sight of the kitchen. I watched a line cook touch food with his bare hands. Ok it maybe was a mild mistake. Nope. He did it continuously and didn't at all wash his hands or use gloves. The other cook was wiping the sweat off his face with his bare hands and continued to cook and serve food without gloves/washing. I was looking forward to eating my meal till I saw that. I wish the other patrons saw what was happening. I assure you they would not eat anymore. The waitress came over to the table and handed us the bill and commented on the fact I barely ate my food. I just nodded and left the booth to pay. I only wish I was able to eat the 35$ worth of food if only the kitchen staff was sanitary. read more

A reliable place to satisfy a carload of teenagers on a road trip! On our annual visit to the Adirondacks, we stop in here and are always met with great pancakes and excellent service. We have only eaten typical breakfast menu items, but it doesn't disappoint, especially when you get genuine maple syrup, and it's an easy I n and out and back on the road. Keyes has a way of letting me down in the years I've been going. The upside of this place, it probably has the most seating in all of Old Forge, their pancakes are decent, and its fun to reenact the scene from Fargo while waiting for your food, "Pancakes again? Can't we get a steak or something?" "Pancakes house". The down side, if you are there for anything besides breakfast it can get a bit suspect, medium-well hamburgers are often very pink, they also want to charge you for refills on your soda at $2.25 a pop. This place was....okay...But not a place I would return. Not one thing special about any of the food i got, and i find it surprising that a breakfast place can have crappy bread/toast, but they did. Tiny wheat bread that was barely toasted. good job screwing that one up.... Our server was completely clueless, was barely seen, brought us the wrong order and ran off before i could realize it.
