If you enjoy college basketball, have a partiality for Duke or just admire Coach K, then going to a basketball game at Cameron Indoor Stadium is a must. Be aware though, you are going for the experience, NOT the facilities.
In comparison to other college basketball stadiums, this one is tiny and historic at best. Do not bother suggesting they change it or give it many upgrades though. I think Duke, Coach K or the team thinks it will jinx them or something. Maybe they feel that if the system is not broken, then do not fix it, or something. As Coach K keeps leading Duke to victory, it is hard to argue.
The food here is overpriced and not that great. You have pizza, Bojangles chicken sandwiches, popcorn, candy, soda, etc. Most of this has been sitting out and thus is stale, lukewarm or soggy. Honestly, it is just better to eat somewhere else before you come. You may want to invest in getting a water at the concession stand though, because there is only one water fountain in the whole building.
The stadium itself is kind of confusing if you do not know where you are going, especially for the students. The students stand in the bottom half of the stadium but there are hallways with offices off to the sides where students seem to often get confused on where they are going.
The main highlight of the stadium though, is the atmosphere. You are very close to everyone else in the stands and those in the front rows are practically on the court. The student section are very proud of being called the Cameron Crazies and do just about whatever they can think of to distract the other team or cheer their own. If you are adverse to loud noises, bring ear plugs, or you may go deaf from the screaming and cheering. It is a rowdy group with a call or a dance for just about every song that is played in the stadium or every situation that arises. It is fun when you see those in the top section actually join in. You have "Crazy towel guy" and two older men that have fun joining in one of the most popular dances of the evening. Those three are at every game and I have yet to see them miss one in my time out in this area. When Duke is at home, they definitely have the home-field advantage and I find it impressive when an opposing team faces Duke and manages to pull off a win. They definitely are facing a hard crowd who do not stop cheering or jeering at any point during the game. The students are known for keep booing a player for several minutes to the end of the game if necessary.
If you do get to go, it is only really worth being part of the whole experience as a student or in the student section. Up in the seated sections, it is just not the same and you are not as involved in the game. That all being said, I would never spend as much on a ticket as some fans are known to do for the really popular games. I have trouble finding a reason why a basketball ticket to see the Duke vs UNC game is over $1000. Fortunately, since I have been in the student section before, I never really have to worry about this ever. You go, you experience, you check it off the bucket list and you move on. read more
