We were referred to NCSU ED for our English bulldog at 6months old, he had fluid in his abdomen and…read morewas going into heart failure - it was an hour and 15 minute drive but our local vet called ahead and they were waiting at the door to take Waylon right in. First trip they removed the fluid and got him back to "normal" we found out he had a lime sized mass on his heart -- the cardiology department is WONDERFUL - they took time to make a plan to remove it and give Waylon a chance at life. Surgery was scheduled for 6 wks from the initial appointment, we had our local vet checking him 3x a week to ensure the fluid was not coming back and within 10'days we were back on our way to Raleigh for another emergency situation. The doc informed us had we been stuck in traffic he wouldn't have made it to the hospital. Long story short - they were able to remove the mass, and give our pup a second chance on life. Waylon has turned into my emotional support pup and I couldn't be more thankful for the wonderful staff we worked with. Dr. Luckring - you rock!

I did gain useful anatomy knowledge, hands-on practice hours, connections with classmates, and was able to pass the MBLEx. However, I ultimately cannot recommend this school to students looking for a professional, evidence-informed educational environment with strong instructional support and open academic discussion. One of my biggest concerns was the gap between what was taught in class and accepted industry standards. My class group sought outside instruction after class to learn basic professional draping practices because we did not feel adequately prepared by the towel method we used at school. The style of lymphatic massage taught also differed significantly from both assigned textbook material and standard professional practice outside of the school. There was a repeated emphasis on accepting teachings without questioning them, including statements such as, "I learned this from my teacher. I didn't question it, I just accepted it." For a professional healthcare-adjacent field that requires critical thinking, ethics, and client safety, this approach was deeply concerning. Over time, many students became hesitant to ask questions, request clarification, or express disagreement because classroom feedback and disciplinary conversations could feel personal or emotionally charged rather than educational. The overall environment often felt less focused on open inquiry and more focused on compliance and avoiding conflict. Questions about inconsistencies between instructors, industry standards, or course material was interpreted as disrespect rather than genuine attempts to learn. Although the program claims to emphasize autonomy, healing, and personal growth, in practice there often seemed to be very little room for critical discussion. Clinical supervision was also extremely limited. Student clinic sessions were technically "supervised," but instructors were typically simultaneously teaching class or seeing their own private clients. During hands-on classes, the instructor was often in his office answering emails rather than offering direct supervision, support, or feedback. As a result, students received very little direct observation or constructive feedback on hands-on skills. Most feedback came from short client comment forms rather than meaningful professional guidance from instructors. During disciplinary discussions, school leadership at times utilized psychological or metaphysical interpretations of students' emotions and behavior rather than maintaining a clearly professional and educational focus. In my own case, during a disciplinary meeting, I was told I was "repressing" memories and that my attempts to correct my own behavior were "not me on the inside" and therefore disingenuous. This contributed to confusion regarding professional boundaries, scope of practice, and further discouraged students from openly engaging in the complaint or feedback process. Another challenge was the lack of neutral administrative structure. Because the owner also serves as director and primary instructor, and the office administrator is his wife, it felt difficult to raise concerns safely or seek objective conflict resolution without fear of retaliation or negative consequences. Lectures were frequently long and unfocused, making it difficult to distinguish essential material from personal stories, tangents, or philosophical discussion. This program may work well for students specifically seeking a guru-style learning environment. However, students looking for clear educational standards, evidence-informed instruction, constructive clinical mentorship, professionalism, and an atmosphere that encourages critical thinking may have a very different experience than they expect. I completed the program and am grateful for the classmates and clients I met along the way, but I believe future students deserve a clearer understanding of the educational culture and instructional environment before enrolling.

After a brief honeymoon period, the program became inconsistent and unsupportive: disengaged instructors, heavy reliance on guest teachers, promised clinical opportunities that never materialized, and a learning environment marked by favoritism, retaliation, and dismissive responses to reasonable concerns and accommodation requests. I invested ~$10,000, over 1,000 hours, and a long commute, yet had no confidence the in-house final would be graded fairly--and that concern proved valid when I failed it so severely it appeared I'd never attended. Meanwhile, other students retook the exam multiple times, leaving some feeling defeated and financially exploited. The contrast was clear after transferring: in a consistent, professional, and supportive program, I passed the MBLEX on my first attempt and am now a licensed LMBT, MLD-C. Future students: ask hard questions about instructor consistency, clinical opportunities, grading transparency, accommodations, and whether the school prioritizes your success--or functions as a gatekeeper. Trust your intuition early. Massage school should be empowering, not demoralizing.

Wake Tech has several campuses. My first time attending Wake Tech was back in 95 era. But after…read morebeing laid off from work in 2008, I decided to go back to school. Since I had no medical insurance, I didn't feel like paying for out of pocket medical expenses. I stumbled across the website for the Wake Tech Dental Program. http://dentalhygiene.waketech.edu/clinic.php If you need your teeth cleaned, then if you are a student at Wake Tech, it is all free. And trust me, I have seen some grills at Wake Tech that needed some attention. And if you are not a student, then it will cost you a small fee of $20. That is not bad for some people that need that $1200 deep intensive cleaning because you have not ever been to a dentist in your life. (They did state that they have some people who need some serious TLC.) But it is good to only pay $20 for something you might not otherwise be able to afford. As far as the cleaning and treatment goes, they did the screening, complete work up, blood pressure check, x-rays and the whole 9 yards. The techs, even being students are very knowledgeable, and gentle. I will put it like this, my first year student tech was so gentle, I actually fell asleep in the chair, while she was in my mouth. The instructor thought it was funny, but I was tired. You don't have to worry about being left alone with some student that have never done any work on a soul. Because first they practice on each other, then they call in their family members and friends to practice on. So, if they didn't kill their family members, or friends, you have nothing to worry about. Now as far as the facilities for being a student, well, they are poor in comparison to the other campuses. The student lounge, while larger than the North campus, is also the cafe, which is also larger than the North campus, but they have nothing to eat except the vending machines. The library is quaint. The computers in the library I think were running Windows 98. Ok, maybe Windows 2000, but they were old, and very slow. Even trying to do some web based school homework on them was very difficult because the computers were not capable of running certain programs or software. The computer in the computer lab were a step up. As a student attending the campus, the issue parking deck cards, and you are supposed to let yourself in. As a student visit from another campus, security is supposed to let you in provided you have proper school ID. That does not always work, as security told me that they were not going to let me out one day since I didn't have a school ID. One quick phone call to the security chief at home fix that issue. So, here is the wrap up. I don't know what it is like to take classes there, but the students complain about the lack of food. I was a HUGE fan of the dental clinic that they run, and they do excellent work, so that earned them a bunch of stars. I did however remove a star because if I went over to that campus, and had to use the library services, or computer, the equipment was dilapidated. Many of the students there are high school that will graduate with their HS Diploma, and college AS at the same time, so you can't beat that. Almost having a BS by the time you finish high school.
