It's nice when you stumble upon a sale. The best part of our purchase today was meeting Cliff, who was so knowledgeable about chiminea. He he explained how you need to out some sand in the bottom of these things so it controls the heat at the bottom. He walked with us throughout the store. We needed to grab some seeds for my daughter's class project. It was such a gorgeous day outside that we figured we'd stop by at the nearest nursery and make a day of it. It's lovely here! So many different plants, trees, floral options, pottery, you name it. It's like a green thumb's dream. A plant warehouse if you will. We grabbed some green onion seeds as my kiddo will practice growing her own plant in her class. We were looking for okra but didn't seem to find it. The only thing that would've made this experience better is to have had a smiling face from any of the staff. We passed by numerous workers who seemed to be a bit too busy to acknowledge us. Longest review of my life. Don't waste time reading it, just call Cornelius for Design AND Installation. You will pay more per plant than if you did it yourself, unless you consider the time spent finding the right plants in the size/shape/quantity/ health, and don't mind Houston traffic getting them home. "You get what you pay for." and I got plenty. My challenging yard: small, narrow, asymmetrical, with an HOA-mandated fence (cute but low, so zero privacy) and typical N. Houston compacted clay. Now, I myself am also challenging, so I wanted everything: year round color, plants that are pest and freeze resistant, aromatic. I also wanted a place for me to grow flowers for cutting, another for my dog's need to be a dog, a place for socializing less likely to annoy neighbors, and keep my Flemish Giant Rabbit safe from predators and my garden safe from him eating everything down to the roots. On my own I spent thousands and no one was happy. Ten letters from the HOA later, I admitted my artistic imitations and called Cornelius/Calloways Nursery for design services. $500 for consult. ("Hmmmm, steep." I thought... " I'll get their plan and do it myself." Yah. No.) Melissa Rothacker, Landscape Architect (equal parts artist, scientist and counselor) took copious notes before even asking to see the yard, and never made me feel like a twit for a yard covered in the 4 ft high raised beds (unsuccessful attempt at bunny proofing), my questionable design choices and the pest inviting over crowding. Rothacker's plant selections gave and design gave me more than I thought possible: a variety of natives, mostly evergreen, for year-round color; large full shrubs for privacy, all mature enough to withstand some rabbit nibbling; a discrete but lush perimeter for the dog; and the perfect spot for a fruit tree/flower garden. Dylan Cody of Cornelius Nursery (part saint, part high school principal) sourced a broad variety of plants, shrubs, trees and vines of just the right size for everything to be in balance from the start. The prices for plants and materials were fair, upfront and consistent. I was able to break up the installation into three phases for my budget: front yard, back yard, and side yard. The installation was performed by the star team assembled by Esteph Christison (owner of Kings Garden), and overseen by Calloways' super plant guru, Dylan Cody, both of whom frequently consulted with Designer Melissa Rothacker by phone. (She came in person several times to see for herself and/or listen to my concerns as the project unfolded. Having all three professionals invested in the project's success was amazing. The level of care, expertise, of these professionals, and Cornelius' replacement guarantee (I would still pay for transport and installation if something dies, but we have already had a share of Houston weather events and everything is thriving) made it a pleasure to watch the project unfold. They source the plants, shrubs and trees from nurseries far and wide, and were able to get the type and size needed to have everything grow harmoniously. Because natives were chosen, my yard is bursting with life already: bees, birds, and tons of beneficial insects, so I don't have to treat the yard with pest control. (serious issues with white flies for two years... Now? Zilch. ) The installation crew all the did the heavy lifting (and digging) with good cheer and care for my pets and property. They also really know plants. No shortcuts were taken. Irrigation system corrected adjusted for plants' needs. Land regraded, and all plants were put in place with tailored soil conditioners, and amendments in the ideal location for sun exposure and air circulation. I could have saved time, heartache, and money if I had just called Cornelius/Calloways first, but when I did, I got an absolute dream team So, no regrets - Just me sippin' tea, with my happy dog and rabbit in my gorgeous Texas cottage garden!! I purchased some begonias around six weeks ago all from the same flat on the display. Only the pink ones are growing. The red and white have not grown at all. I was told that they were probably from different suppliers. Their only solution was for me to dig everything up, bring it back and start all over. He is full of factual information but will also give you his opinion on things if you ask. I was looking for potted plants as a gift. After checking out some chain stores, I called Calloway's and they had about 15 different items and said they typically keep giftable potted plants all the time. The selection was really nice, I think some might have been for Valentine's Day. The prices were reasonable, around $30-60 for a potted plant garden. Great value and well-made. Definitely lasted longer than ones from the florist. I also needed a stick and paper due to it being a gift, and they had it available and were so helpful. New to the neighborhood and so glad I stopped by. I have 4 terra-cotta planters I purchased for the front porch. I was struggling a little bit on what exactly to go with given the sun (am), and size. I was able to bring one of the planters in and Sandy did a great job helping pull together some ideas and frame the up in the pottery. We came up with a great look using marigolds, which will also keep all those pesky moths off the front porch at night. My grandmother owned a garden center like this one and my mom worked their full time. I would spend hours there and know the business. This is a go-to. Everyone is awesome and it feels like a family run business. Tons of variety. If you catch them the right time they have exquisite pots half price. Ask for Sandy if she's working that day. what a beautiful nursery. now that spring is around the corner we are tackling the job of redoing our landscape. calloways has everything you'll need. we bought a beautiful japanese maple tree to be a focal point in front of our home. with its gorgeous red leaves during spring and summer and elegant, bare branch lines during winter. they had many to choose from. you can tell they lovingly care for all their trees, plants and flowers. prices are a bit higher but you can't beat the quality. everyone working here were very sweet. you just can't be in a bad mood walking through this nursery. read more

I had a great experience looking for plants as a gift here. The staff is helpful and accommodating. I'm not very educated on indoor / outdoor plants or gardening in general although I've planted some in the past, but the staff was able to help us make our final decisions based on elements such as sunlight exposure, size, and aesthetic preferences. The two times I went, it was about 5PM- not too busy, but a couple of shoppers roaming around and enough staff to assist. They have a covered indoor area and a smaller outdoor area. There are pots for the plant scattered near the register for the (mostly) indoor plants, and larger less gaudy pots for the outdoor plants. I got a few mosquito bites, but that comes with the outdoors! I'll be back soon to purchase another plant. read more

I really love Calloway's. I feel like it's a fantastic place to buy plants, and I think a lot of other people agree because it's always busy, especially if you go on the weekend. I recommend coming here during the day on a weekday or first thing in the morning on the weekend. I feel like they have a really fantastic selection of plants to choose from, especially compared to somewhere like Home Depot or Walmart. I do feel like it can be hit or miss when it comes to the helpfulness of the staff, however for the most part the people who work here are very knowledgeable when it comes to choosing plants. read more

Worst customer service ever! Visited this Calloway's today, and the cashier and employee (who was on his cell phone) said they didn't know how to help me find native plants and couldn't help me. When I asked if someone else could help me, they used a walkie to call another employee who intentionally walked away and said "she had to check into something"... after 10 minutes of waiting for someone to help me- and no other customers in sight- I finally gave up and decided to choose another nursery! We've been to Calloway's many a time. Once the wife and I got hitched, it was time to put some greenery in the house. I suppose my one philodendron wasn't enough. For houseplants, we don't have green thumbs, the wife in particular has the touch of death, so it's been a challenge and Calloway's has been right there to take care of us every step of the way. We've bought everything from herbs (basil, rosemary, etc.) to trees (a Chinkapin oak), to everything in between. The quality is pretty good and all their plants come with lifetime replacement warranties. We've had to use it several times, eventhough the most mortem autopsy showed that we were over zealous waterers. The staff is very helpful, giving us tips to save the next one and telling us what we did wrong on the last one. The prices are a little high, but with as many plants as we've killed, unintentionally, of course, they need a little padding to cover that cost. It's definitely understandable. Their pot selection is pretty good and they have all kinds of fertilizer. If you're looking for something to plant, this is where you should go for greenery. Thank you mulch, Calloways! read more

The staff knows their stuff compared to those at Home Depot and Lowe's in the home and gardening department. They take pride in that knowledge too. It's a pleasure to actually have a conversation with recommendations and suggestions to your questions rather than a quick Q&A dash. The prices are great when you get their daily specials that are based on seasonal items. They host an annual Fall Festival where kids can pick a small-medium pumpkin and decorate with sticker faces. They can plant a flower to take home. There's freshly popped popcorn in the mix. There's a couple of staged areas to take the best Fall pictures of the kids during the Fall Festival. read more

The plants are all well taken care of and there are all kinds of accessories such as pots, seeds, fertilizer, tools, etc. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He helped me find the perfect gardenia plant for my mom, with the proper soil and pot. Then he explained how I should pot the plant, along with the watering instructions. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming; plants are not stressed; and there's always a good variety of healthy greenery to browse and shop for. I'm always on the lookout for clearance items and specials; the specimens they put out on sale tend to be good in shape. I visit Calloway's regularly getting garden supplies and asking for advise. Since I belong to the Garden Club, I receive regular emails with helpful hints and notices of garden specials. Calloways sponsor our homeowners yard of the month and gives one lucky receipient a gift card each month. The plants that I have purchased from Calloways have all been healthy and I have not had to take advantage of their guarantee to replace plants. After wasting 30 minutes of our time in a different Calloway's location (Custer) me and my husband drove here and we made it right on the dot 7pm on a Sunday before they close. I explain the gentleman what had happened and he said he was close, I felt so frustrated about the overall Calloway experience in less than an hr that it probably transpired because he let us in, open the register and was super nice about helping us. The younger guy with long hair looked a bit frustrated and annoyed he threw his satchel or backpack looking thing to the floor when the gentlemen. Asked him to do something. There was another lady worker that didn't say much and left, but the gentleman was kind at all times and to our luck two plants next to the register were exactly what I was looking for. This review I truly want to make it a 5 because it meant a lot some people still believe in customer service like the manager but due to the younger guy with an attitude wanting to leave it can't be. After the young guy left and got on his car he loudly said "OMG" before he shut the car door... Lol teenage tantrum. But aside from that very happy with the managers service will for sure recommend this location and visit myself more often. read more
