This place has new owners. While they have remodeled the place and it's much easier to walk around in than previously, they don't have nearly the inventory they used to have. I used to purchase bamboo stalks here, which they no longer have. I was told they may get some in next month. I just noticed that they don't have near the amount of plants that the previous owners used to carry. Perhaps they will increase their inventory in the coming months. read more

What a gem! Came to Dallas unexpectedly and decided to do a little plant shopping while there. Went to Calloway's originally but was mostly unimpressed, however an employee there recommended this place. They have such an amazing selection of plants, so many bonsai but also many other house plants as well. I love how carefully all of their plants were laid out. It made it easy to see them all and you could tell they were all well cared for. My only regret was my lack of car space because it meant I couldn't purchase some of their larger plants. Another cool plus about this place (especially as a tourist) is that the originally building was built in the 1930s and then they added on more to the building later in the 70s I think if I remember right. Super friendly and helpful staff, well cared for and curated selection, jealous we don't have one like this at home. read more

I have been a gardener for 25 years. For my birthday, my wife bought me a bonsai from Sunshine. 2 months later it died unexpectedly. Twice. I attempted to return it, but each time, the 2 young redheaded girls that work there, negated my explanation, and proposed false ideas that the liability was solely on me. BOTH times- they said that they didn't have any replacement species because all of them died. SO you sell my wife an $80 plant that dies while ALL the other EXACT plant species die too, and you don't replace mine with at least another plant. Something? Anything? ZERO customer service here. Despite being relatively friendly, the staff here was really weird about driftwood displays...I pick one up and it has a price tag "24.95" and the guy working says "you know what....that's not for sale". So I keep walking and then pick up another one that says "14.95" and I say "is this one for sale?" To which they say "yes" however when I go to check out they don't want to sell it for the marked price but instead 40 dollars. So suffice it to say..they'd rather have a customer leave having spent NO money than any money at all. Weird flex. read more

Cool shop with lots of bonsai, fig and citrus trees. I bought my Fukien Bonsai and Janet Craig plants from Sunshine Miniature Trees about 5 years ago and they're both doing great!! They help me re-pot and re-soil it every year or so and I also purchase their fertilizer which really support healthy growth year-round. Their staff are all so super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. It's a fun place to check out and they also sell a wide variety of planters. They'll also deliver nearby. read more

I've been here a couple times over the past few years. Everytime I go I wonder why I've waited so long to come back. The staff is helpful and very knowledgable. They'll guide you to a bonsai or succulent that will meet your needs and thrive in the conditions you have. There is a large assortment of species, sizes and price points. Most recently I went for a bonsai tree that would work with a succulent garden. Every staff member asked if I needed assistance in a non-pushy, genuinely helpful way. One of the associates, Mai, pointed me towards an Elephant Jade Bonsai. It was obvious that this is her passion and she alleviated any fears I had about my black thumbs. She helped me find the fullest, prettiest one in the store. She enthusiastically educated me about how to trim and care for the plant, as well as warning signs for over or under watering. There are lots of rooms, nooks and crannies to explore so I recommend coming here with time to spare and discover. This is a great spot to get gifts for "the person who has everything". I've purchased gifts for Bosses Day here on a couple of occasions. I was excited to finally make a purchase for myself. At check out the man I presume to be the owner informed me about the monthly FREE bonsai care class that is usually held on the first Saturday of the month. Call or stop in to sign up to participate! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We picked up a Pothos and a Fukien tea tree bonsai, as well as some general fertilizer. We came into Sunshine expecting a good selection of Bonsai and was immediately blown away by how HUGE their selection was. Honestly, huge. I had to walk around a few times to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything! We were made to feel welcome and it was clear the staff really had a passion for plants. Amanda and Emily were both very friendly and helpful - even offered my daughter a bottle of water. Now of course when you're buying a plant it's well, alive. So when we were checking out I was surprised to see some care sheets that came along with each plant. HIDDEN GEM!! Cannot hype this store enough! If you're looking for a bonsai tree, this place is the place to go. Any of the staff members are quite knowledgeable because they love bonsais themselves. Each of the staffers I've talked to brought personal experience to how to care for the bonsai trees. Don't let the interior dissuade you. The customer service was great... until it wasn't. We came here a few months ago to buy a few indoor trees to make our home more green. The person we worked with was great - friendly, offered suggestions, gave us simple care directions, etc. He helped us pot the plants and even added moss around it to make each plant look a little prettier. He told us to give them a call if we had any questions or problems with the plants, and they would help us re-pot or figure out any issues. We bought 5 plants and pots for around $300 and left really excited. Fast forward 4 months. One of our lily plants started to droop only after 1-2 days, even after being watered. We were too afraid to overwater her, so we decided to call the store. We told them the problem, and they just said "bring it in". The lily sat about 3 feet high and was pretty big by now, so we put them in the trunk of our prius and drove to to the store. At the store, we were told that "we transported the plant the wrong way" and now it's "probably sunburned" and most likely can't be saved. They said by the looks of it, it just needed more water than we were giving it. We asked if we could water or re-pot it at the store, and they said they would have to charge us for it. We were FURIOUS. 1) Couldn't they have offered a few suggestions over the phone instead of just saying, "bring it in"? 2) Wouldn't you think they would've told us not to keep it in the sun or offered the right way to transport it? 3) They told us when we bought the plants that they would help if anything ever happened. We took time out of our day to leave work and go take the plant back, only for them to tell us we have to pay for any help. Frustrating experience. We plan on buying several more plants for the house, and definitely will NOT be coming back here. read more

I've been looking for indoor plants for our home, and came to this store because of the good reviews. I spent over $300 on a variety of plants and pots here, and asked questions on how to care for the plants. They told me to call or come in if I ever need help. My peace lily that I purchased here started to droop recently and I called them to see if I was doing anything wrong. The owner told me to bring it in and he'd help see what he could do. I went through a lot of trouble to bring my lily in (large heavy plant and pot) and the owner was unbelievably rude. He chided me, made me feel bad about not knowing how to care for the plant. He refused to do anything to help. He said the plant needed water but he wouldn't water it for me. He said it needed to be repotted but would have to charge me for it. I was in the middle of expressing my concern to him and he walked away, refusing to talk to me. I will never shop here again, and I recommend that you spend your money elsewhere, where they do not treat their high spending customers this way. When I left my house, my plant was drooping but still green. When I got to his store, it looked dead because it was hot outside and I didn't know to not carry the plant in my trunk (open trunk not closed). I never should've brought the plant back, and I don't know why he asked me to bring it in if he wasn't going to do anything to help me. It was very inconvenient to pack into my car, take time out of work, and go to him, but I did because I really care and wanted my plant to be ok. read more

I want to be really good at gardening. I fancy myself a 60-something year old grandma in a cute 20 year old's body, great at baking and cross-stitching and growing all kinds of cool shit. Well, I buy my cookie dough in the refrigerated section, my stitches are way uneven, and where established gardeners have brilliant, verdant thumbs, mine as more of a pukey shade of brown-green. That said, I bought four different kinds of succulents and cacti a few months back. I loved them, painted cute pots for them, named them... and promptly killed them. As a replacement, my sweet boyfriend got me the cutest little bonsai in the world for our anniversary... which shriveled up after less than 60 days. Bonsai are not easy, y'all. Not wanting my guy to know I murdered his thoughtful present, I trekked back to Sunshine in hopes that my tree could be saved. I was greeted immediately by an employee who poked, prodded, scraped, and analyzed my tree before pronouncing it Dead on Arrival. RIP, Fukien Tea. When I said I wanted to replace the lil guy, I was swept along in a whirlwind of action. The guy took me to find another (healthy) tree and asked tons of questions about how I'd been caring for mine. Turns out I was doing basically everything wrong-- watering too shallowly, too infrequently, and putting it in a window that wasn't sunny enough before moving it to a place that basically singed off the leaves. Oopsies! I was invited to a complimentary bonsai class at the greenhouse and given plenty of care instructions as the guy moved my new bonsai into my old pot, added some cute gravel, fertilized, and sprayed pesticide. He really knew his stuff. No one tried to upsell, surcharge, or talk down to me-- just tons of options, tons of great advice, and great looking plants. Best of all, I got a do-over! And first I just thought it was a small shelf with discounted flawed succulents but then kept seeing more of these sad stretched succies. Inside and on the bottom shelf. Bamboo plants isn't my thing however they all looked phenomenal. Succs & cacti are my thing and I was bummed that some of my faves you had could be in much better looking shape. read more

Was out today in the cold to look for a few small decorative plants to accent my decor. Stopped at a nearby nursery but didn't see a darn thing that caught my eye. Went to YELP and found this treasure tucked away off Greenville next to a liquor store. Went in and had to restrain myself. A whole houseful of plant life, succulents, and trees!!! A fantastic selection of the usual and the unusual in various shapes and sizes!! A very helpful and polite staff; reasonable prices; all the stuff you need...pots, mulch, moss, rocks...all that stuff in one place! My advice to potential buyers: "caveat emptor" -- let the buyer beware! I ordered online a miniature Bodhi tree from Richard on 12/30/18. Today, 9/9/19, over eight months later, I still haven't received my tree. That isn't a typo. I have attempted numerous times to contact Richard. Generally, calls and emails weren't responded to, but when they were they contained excuses (too cold to ship, for example) and even more empty promises. In May, when the weather had gotten warmer in Cincinnati, the tree was promised in the next two-and-a-half weeks. No tree arrived. Two more calls in July and August went unanswered. I finally filed a formal complaint with the Dallas BBB. Interestingly enough, Richard called on Labor Day, 9/2/19, saying he'd be sending the tree via Priority Mail "in the next day or so." One week later ... yep, you guessed it. No tree. While I was waiting for Richard to be an honorable, sincere and truthful businessman, too much time had elapsed for American Express to file a dispute and give me a $25.90 refund. (I just finished speaking with AMEX.) Everything in this review is factually correct. Be very cautious in dealing with this establishment! UPDATE: (9/12/19) I just received a refund check from Richard for $25.80. Close enough, given the situation. There was no explanation for the sheisty service that included glacially-slow response times and NO Bodhi tree! I rather imagine I have the Dallas BBB to thank for the reimbursement. While I have my money back, I still stand by my accurate one-star Yelp review. read more
