We called ahead and asked if they would be able to sit a table of four. The staff member said not until an hour later and that was just an estimate. We decide to just go to the restaurant and wait for a table. Only 1/3 of the tables were occupied. The bar had no one sitting at it. I don't know if the restaurant is trying to give a false impression that they are super busy but you can actually be losing business with this narrative, what if I decided to go somewhere else instead of waiting. One of the members in our party was running late, when we asked to put in an order of food in instead of waiting for him, we were presented with attitude. The staff also seemed to be all over the place, interchanging roles. Trinidad food itself has deep flavors and provides a sense of warmth. The food itself was good in general but that's because of the dish itself. It seems like the recipes changed since we visited the restaurant over a year ago - before the chef took a year hiatus. Doubles (5/5) - Fried bread, curried chickpeas, cucumber chutney, tamarind, chadon beni; this reminded me of a desi dish I am familiar with, very good Aloo Pepper Roti (4/5) - Crispy roti, cumin, garlic, habanero seasoned potatoes, cheddar, cilantro lime sour cream; crowd pleaser for sure! it's like if a paratha and pierogi had a baby Curried Fish & Shrimp (5/5) - Lightly fried swai, coconut curry broth, butterflied shrimp, sautéed spinach, jasmine rice; fish is cooked to perfection Pepper Beef Lo Mein (1/5) - it was drowning in the hoisin sauce

WOW!!! i cannot believe i've been living in lancaster for so long without stumbling upon this place. easily one of the best meals i've EVER HAD in lancaster. you can not go wrong with anything on the menu. the plantain gnocchi was out of this world, the coconut jerk chicken was so good i got an order to go. went here after showing some out of state friends downtown lancaster and now they cannot stop talking about how awesome it was. WILL BE BACK SOON

The restaurant looked like someone's living room. We were immediately seated and a QR code was on the table for the menu. I got the Coconut Jerk Chicken. My husband got the Buss Up Shut dinner of curried beef. I really liked my Coconut Jerk Chicken. The chicken pieces were tender and the sauce had the right amount of sweet, savory, and heat. My husband's curried beef tasted bland in comparison with to me. He said it was ok but liked my food better. The bread compared to Indian bread we've had was too doughy and not as crispy. I don't know much of Trinidadian food so this could be very traditional and great. I can only compare it to similar dishes I've had in other places. The coconut jerk was very good. I highly recommend it.

I came by here with my friends to try out this place. Surprisingly, I wasn't disappointed but left with a great satisfied smile. I street parked my car nearby as I didn't see a designated parking lot for this restaurant. Once we entered, we were greeted and quickly arranged our tables and seats. Their service was great. We wanted a dish that is not in the menu and the chef came out to confirm that he can still make that dish for us. Amazing! Really doing above and beyond to their customers. We ordered char siu pork belly over rice and the wings sampler. Both dishes taste very good. The place itself isn't that big, so if you have a big party, maybe it's best to make your reservation ahead of time.

Food was good overall. The doubles tasted great but the flatbreads were dense and pancakey instead of light and bready. The coconut jerk chicken was also good but heavily under salted. And when I asked for salt they simply said no which came off a bit highbrow haha. Nice environment and well decorated.

The food here is absolutely amazing and delicious. Unique dishes that I imagine you will not find anywhere else. The slab of ribs with Mac n cheese is what I had and the meat was tender and fell of the bones. Absolutely to die for. My wife had the Fish and shrimp in a skillet and to too was amazing and delicious. If you're in Lancaster you must stop in for some delicious food.

I cannot believe I am still finding restaurants that are unique and so delicious in the city of Lancaster. Who would have thought?! Trinidad cuisine... A unique combination of Latin American food and Chinese cuisine. I was blown away by the quality, quantity, and price of the place! Quality: everything is cooked to perfection. The bao buns are a MUST get. Out of everything that I ate (everything was great) the bao buns are a top. The ribs are so soft that the meat comes off the bone with a touch of the fork. The coconut jerk chicken was super tender as well and the sauce that it came in was a perfect combination of savory, creamy, and spicy. Quantity: the amount they gave you per dish was probably enough to share between two people. Your palate will be selfish but your stomach might (maybe...) Want to share. The sharable dishes are just enough to wet your appetite, the entrees are enormous portions. Price: my wife and I ate 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and a dessert. It was much less than other restaurants I've been to that gave less in terms of food as well as quality. The food is more than worth its value imo. The restaurant changes its menu constantly which is brilliant in terms of business model as well as the consumers as I love trying new things. I'm sad that they are only open for limited hours and they are packed to the brim. If you are wanting to go (yes you should go if you can) I recommend making reservations at least 2-3 weeks in advance. I'm totally going back

Callaloo is a true gem of Lancaster city. Such good fusion food, packed with flavor and very unique. Fried chicken bao buns are the best and I would recommend to anyone. We also enjoy yuca fries which come with a variety of fun dipping sauces. Fries are a little bland on their own. As far as meals, the jerk chicken was our favorite. Also, the mango lemonade was an excellent drink. If you've never had buss up-shut, please try it. It is a delicious and doughy vehicle for all kinds of curries and stews. Love this place!

Still one of my favorite eateries! The quality has not declined since they've opened and the customer service is still outstanding! They have decided to remain take-out only due to the size of their restaurant and wanting to keep their staff and our community safe. I live about 20 minutes away and the food traveled well. Most recently, I had the Fried Chicken Bao Buns and they were amazing! Please keep these on the menu! Soft, light, airy buns, perfectly fried chicken counterbalanced with a slightly sweet mayo based sauce and refreshing cucumber that adds another layer of texture. Callaloo is always high on my recommendation list and has remained in my top five for Lancaster!

My family and I tried this place and so glad we did! Service was great, food was amazing and unique! I had the duck leg and it was probably the best duck I have ever had. My kids had the Korean chicken wings and Mac and cheese pies both were delicious!

This has been some of the best food I've ever eaten out. I went here for the first time in April 2021 and was blown away. I was itching to go back and finally did this weekend and was very happy with my food once again. We literally drove 2 hours just to eat here. The flavors are absolutely amazing. You have to try the doubles. They're a great starter and fun to eat. The aloo pepper roti is not my favorite as I find the potato to be a little bland, but the people I've gone with have always loved it. The chicken bao buns are really good as well. The main curries (chicken and beef) are a staple and good, but I would suggest trying one of the entrees instead. I really loved their shepherd's pie, which they weren't serving this time. The fish and shrimp curry was delicious. The fish was somehow slightly crispy even tho it was in a thick sauce and was bursting with flavor. The buss up shut is a must have if it's not already included in your main. Oh yeah! Their hibiscus drink is also a good add on. Definitely give this place a try whether you were considering it before or not.

My daughter attends F&M, so every month or so we have the opportunity to sample some of Lancaster's many up and coming restaurants. We arrived today to celebrate Easter with my daughter a day early. Reading the Buzzfeed article citing Callaloo as Pennsylvania's best new restaurant, we had to check it out. We shared a "Doubles" for the table, which are amazing savory curried chickpeas served atop a wonderful fried bread. The accompanying chutney completes a great dish! Between the four of us, we enjoyed the "buss-up-shut" curries with vegetables and chicken. This is served with a very unique bread called "paratha" which is a flaky tortilla-like bread that helps scoop up the delicious curry. My daughter and I each had the "shark and bake" sandwich which is a swai fillet served lightly fried on an amazing coconut bread. We both loved the sandwich, which was served with a dish of plantain chips, but we agreed that we could have used more of the garlic/cilantro sauce. Because, the sauce was that good. This a definitely a knife and fork sandwich. I've never been to Trinidad, and it is not currently on my list of places to visit. For that reason, I am glad we came to Callaloo for our Easter dinner. We loved the curry, the sauces and the excellent service that brings home the best that Trinidad has to offer. I understand that some people might be hesitant to visit a Trinidadian restaurant. I recommend that, like us, you take the opportunity to experience flavors and combinations that will leave your mouth looking forward to your next visit. By the way, for all of you hot sauce connoisseurs like me, the pepper sauce really is that hot. It is amazing, but be careful!! Well done Callaloo. This place is amazing! A must visit when you are in Lancaster!! The beef curry was not spicy, just how I like it! It was so flavorful! And the Buss up shut was to die for! Dipping it in the sauces and eating it with the curry was heavenly! Side note- none of the wait staff were West Indian or POC. read more

I had doubles, pepper roti, and buss up shut w/ curry chicken. The doubles was very tasty! I got every contrasting taste. The sweet, the sour, and the spicy. The chutney on it was a game over because it sealed the deal in flavor. The barra (doubles) was the right consistency and the perfect size. The aloo pepper roti was delicious! This was my first time having pepper roti with cheddar cheese and it was delicious. I was a little hesitant when it was served with sour cream but I was wrong... it was a good compliment. Lastly, the buss up and curry chicken. The buss up was the right texture and soft as well. The curry chicken was well seasoned and flavorful. I sapped up every bit of sauce with my buss up. I definitely recommend the doubles, aloo pepper roti, and the buss up shut w/ curry chicken. read more

Decided to take my family (who were visiting from out of town) here for an early Easter dinner after reading so many positive Yelp reviews and seeing it featured in a Buzzfeed article. I wasn't disappointed-Yelp made me look good yet again! We started off with the doubles, which were absolutely delicious. 2 orders of 2 was perfect for all 4 of us. For some reason, the flavoring of this dish reminded me of papdi chaat (one of my favorite Indian foods), and I wasn't mad about that. I got the Buss-Up-Shut & Curried Chicken. It was delicious, well spiced, and the chicken was perfectly cooked. It was so filling that after the doubles, I couldn't finish it all! Luckily, Callaloo has an excellent take out system, so your leftovers will be perfectly stored for a late night snack. The rest of my family enjoyed the Shark & Bake (I tried a bite--the fish was so fresh!) and the Buss-Up-Shut & Curried Vegetables. There were no complaints, especially when the pepper sauce was brought out...which definitely scored extra points with my dad for the heat and flavor. I was happy that Lancaster was yet again able to satisfy some of the biggest foodies I know! Can't wait to come back again! read more

Callaloo has great food and amazing and friendly staff. This was one of the best meals that I have had in awhile. Definitely come here when in Lancaster. You will leave happy and full of food. The curries were great, and I would suggest trying the hot sauce. read more

Its not often i get a gluten free dinner so flavorful and well prepared. The shrimp and fish curry is a 100/100 hands down the best flavor in the restaurant. Crunchy fried fish covered in a fragrant and robust curry. If you get an extra rice you can get a nice lunch left overs. :). read more

Real yelper know, when we go to tourist locations your not Elite unless you go where the locals live. When I think of Lancaster I envision horse and buggy, side of the road stands, and large fields. Well...was I wrong. My yelp app takes me to a part of Lancaster that has a more like open South Philly feel; you know, row homes, well manicured fronts, and people of all nationalities. So I guess it's wouldn't be unusual to have a Trinidadian restaurant there. Arriving on a Thursday evening the restaurant was packed with a wait of 1.5 hours. Highly recommend that you have a reservation. The staff was really nice and offered a drink while we waited for our food; I don't recall another time a restaurant did that with a carry out order. As others have mentioned, the food is just immersed in flavor, see pictures below. The Calllaloo with Crab and Fish and Shrimp were delicious with the seafood being perfectly cooked (no over cooked shrimp thank goodness) I really look forward to returning and trying more deliciousness! read more

Excellent Americanized Trinidadian fare with well executed proteins, complex flavors, and intelligent plate composition. I feared this place would be too spicy, but they have a ton of mild options (I think they should market that more clearly.) I ordered the chicken thigh dish. The dish comes in a cast iron pan. It is a braised chicken thigh in a chicken stock base with potatoes and other vegetables. On the side it was served with some puff pastry like bread, two sauces (neither of which I felt were well matched with the flavors of the dish), and a cucumber chutney (also this didn't seem to go well with the dish.) The chicken thighs were wonderful. The fell apart on the fork, but also held onto their natural fat and jus. The potatoes were a bit underexecuted and seemed to distract a bit. I'd have enjoyed them softer or crispier, but not quite so dense in mouthfeel. The sauce was deeply respectful of the chicken natural flavor and was well spiced and seasoned. The puff pastry bread was amazing. It made this dish very much like a deconstructed (albeit lighter sauced) pot pie. This bread is buttery, fluffy, soft, but still maintains a robust mouthfeel. It was the perfect complement to the hearty chicken and vegetable flavors of the dish. This was an excellent meal. It's no surprise Yelp named Calalloo the 2017 best new restaurant in the state of Pennsylvania. read more

This was an amazing restaurant in Lancaster City. My wife and I were hoping to find something different that wasn't a pub, so Callaloo was a great spot for dinner. The restaurant is very vibrant in color and has large photos explaining different aspects of the cuisine. The place is tiny, so get there early to grab a seat. Our waitress was very nice toward us and would check in on us frequently. The food is very stick to your ribs type of fair. My wife and I decided to split tge fried chicken bao buns as an appetizer. The chicken was well seasoned and the sweet & spicy soy glaze was awesome. I got the rack and mac as my entree. The ribs had a great bark on them and fall of the bone. They were very tender and the dry rub was delicious. The mac and cheese had a nice crust over top of it and was great as well! Awesome small restaurant with delicious food and fantastic service! read more

By far the most delicious Trini food I've had outside of Trinidad. Absolutely love this place. If it wasn't so far from NY I would visit all the time. I had the doubles, LLB drink, Sorrel, and shrimp Curry. Highly highly recommend. read more

Another excellent outing. The beef curry with buss-up-and-shut was excellent. The chickpeas and potatoes and pumpkin and beef meld together so well! And the buss-up-and-shut was not as doughy as in the past. Doubles again were perfect! I know I've had a love and hate relationship with this place but the curries have never let me down and I recommend them highly! Shout out to their pepper sauce! I finally went to Callaloo after seeing the beautiful bird art on its windows for a while now. I was recommended this place as being friendly for vegetarians and they certainly werent kidding! Food: we ordered the Doubles, Pineapple chow and aloo roti. The flavours were subtly distinct enough from Indian for me to have made me enjoy everything there. I truly did! I loved the sauce the roti came with. Their house brand habanero sauce was a good heat and I loved dipping the pineapple in that. I loved the flaky squishiness of the Doubles. When I'm back in Lancaster, I am planing to try the other things on the menu - the entrees. Ambience : very casual and good decor! While the tables were reserved, the bar tables were empty and perfect. Service : it was fast, efficient and friendly but not too friendly. I just loved to food so much that my experience was absolutely positive. Vegetarians or otherwise, do visit Callaloo. ETA: been here few more time and love it. We had their lemongrass creme brûlée and it WAS HEAVENLY. we devoured it before a photo was taken, but do order it. It is delightfully good. read more

This place is so good! Reasonable prices for delicious food. The arugula mango salad was SUPER! Went there for lunch, where you order at the counter, get a #, and sit anywhere you like, and they bring the food out to you. The curry coconut chicken was so good!!! The double was delicious--fried bread with garbanzo beans and some other deliciousness was really a big portion for a low price. The drinks were great--lemon lime bitters and peanut drink were really tasty. Go here for lunch at least and you will have a great meal for a low price. Loved it!! read more

Verdict: Callaloo serves up a unique dining experience. It's up to you to embrace it. Go for lunch. Get there when they open at 11:30. It gets busy fast. Make good use of the off street parking they have on Mulberry. It's super close and convenient. The Buss-Up-Shut & Curried Chicken was a new experience for me. I've had plenty of curries just like this one before but the roti was different. I recommend you give it a try. You can get curry with rice lots of places. I had to let my American eating habits behind to properly use the roti like a utensil. "Properly" is me being generous because I need more practice. It was easy to soak up some of the liquid in the curry but I found it much harder to get a little chicken with the other ingredients in a single bite. read more

Just when I thought Lancaster couldn't be cooler, Trinidadian restaurant. I thought it would be similar to other island foods, but it was bold and exciting. Make reservations and ask your waitress for suggestions. This place is busy and BYOB! Atmosphere is sleek, cozy, friendly and modern. Cool ingredients and Trini food art adorn the walls. Vegetarians and carnivores alike could dig this place. Small menu but it has big flavor. I'd come here to try something new. Trini foods are hearty, some are a tiny bit spicy. There are interesting ingredients or new spices and flavor profiles that I've never tried. Everything was super fresh! Only a few items are spicy. But those items are sneaky spice, where you suddenly realize your mouth is hot after a few minutes. Still so tasty. The special spicy beef with jasmine rice 4/5. Food filled with tons of flavor. The pineapple seasoned with cilantro was insane and the spicy beef dish with jasmine rice and the bread was awesome. It was very busy and service was pretty good. It seems to be a popular place and I know why. Cool space and atmosphere. Would love to go back. read more

Headed here yesterday for a late lunch. Been wanting to get here for a bit. Through the social media buzz, coming for a visit was almost sure to be a gastronomic win. It was. Had the Stewed Beef with Roti, Doubles, Aloo Pepper Roti, and the Peanut Punch. Since I love spice, I was generous with the hot sauce. Yes, I ate like it was my last meal on earth. Close, I am off of work for a couple of weeks and giving myself more leeway to live the good life free of care. The dishes were tremendous. Know close to nothing about Trinidadian cuisine and that was part of the thrill. It had elements of Indian food with a definite Caribbean vibe. If you can't get to Trinidad, let it come to you, through your mouth and into your soul. Love, love, love this hidden gem in downtown Lancaster. The food is great! The fried chicken bao buns are my go to. My son likes the curried beef or chicken buss-up-shut. Their menu/service is excellent, but the hours have been a bit of a moving target since covid- totally understand that has been the case with many restaurants- but they are good about posting on social media. read more

11/21 visit. I'd estimate this is my 5th visit to Callaloo since opening. I have enjoying bringing new people each time and helping them discover the delicious Trinidadian food that Callaloo creates. On the night we visited there was a spicy Korean bao bun special and I hope it gets added to the regular menu. It was everyone's favorite item of the evening! I visited Callaloo today while visiting Lancaster, PA. My wife is from Trinidad and was in the mood for"Trini" food, so I yelp'ed and this place is the only game in town serving this type of Caribbean cuisine. I will have to say that we were pleasantly surprised, especially being so familiar with "Trini" food from back home (as my wife would say). I myself am Puerto Rican and familiar with the taste of the Caribbean. Calliloo is a small place that is bright and trendy. I recommend calling ahead and reserving a table as this place fills up fast for dinner. I ordered for my family the Chicken Curry Bus-Up-Shut (a type of roti bread) and it was fantastic. I also ordered the Pineapple Chow, Cassava Fries (Yuca), Shrimp Souse (Ceviche) and last but not least, the food that Trinidad is most famous for, the "Doubles". All of the food was wonderful and yummy. In closing, I would say pay this place a visit and you won't be disappointed. I would have given 5 stars but thought the "Doubles" are over priced for what is considered a street food (2 for $1USD in Trini and sold for $1.50 each in NYC). Lastly, they should play some Caribbean music (Calipso or Soca) which would lend great to the ambiance of the restaurant. Great job Calliloo!! read more

I have eaten here at least five times now, and I can't stop going back. If you like Indian food with a Caribbean twist, this is the place for you. The entrees are a smidge pricey ($11-$18) but they come with a huge side of Roti, or Buss-up-Shut bread. It's so delish. Also the Cassava fries are the bomb.com. My wife got the recommendation from some co-workers and since it was only about a 30 minute drive from us, we decided to give it a shot. We had never had any Trinidadian food whatsoever, so everything about it was an experience. To say the least, it was a great experience! We went on a whim cause we didn't have much to do. We were lucky enough to get a table despite us not having a reservation. If you decide to dine in, just check to see if you can reserve a table ahead of time. Pricing: Slightly higher than average. We ended up ordering a doubles ($3.75), coconut jerk chicken ($16), and a spicy pepper beef ($19). For the amount of food that is given, it's definitely high, but how they make up for it in quantity, they make up for it in quality. Food: The food was great. The doubles comes on this bread that is fried, but soft with chickpeas, cucumber chutney, with a tamarind cilantro sauce. It was a light appetizer that tasted healthy and easy on the palate. The coconut jerk chicken and spicy pepper beef were both tender with their own mixture of flavors. The coconut jerk chicken did taste like jerk chicken I have had before with a coconut flavor added to it with a bit of spiciness to it. The spicy pepper beef sauce reminded me of a Chinese sweet and sour sauce with more spiciness to it. All together, everything was fantastic. Service: Great. Our waitresses made sure that we had clean plates to share our food together with our doubles and main course. She ended up bringing us a carafe for water since she noticed we were scarfing down water to help with the spiciness of our food. Overall: A delicious experience! I think for a first time trying Trinidadian food, it was a great first impression. You wouldn't expect a place like this in Central PA, but it's definitely a gem. I would definitely recommend for anyone to come here if they are in the area, or at least 30 minutes away to try the food. read more

Callaloo Trinidadian Kitchen has so many five star reviews. We expected the food to be as other Yelpers described. The table we were lead to had a napkin on the seat from the previous customer and was near a door that the staff keep opening and closing. We had the pineapple chow which lacked flavor described by others. It was a bowl of cut pineapple. The curry chicken was rubbery. There were many empty tables on a weekend evening. When asked how dinner was, my husband let the waitress know the chicken was rubbery. She said it was because it was brined and did not offer us anything else. We are not familiar with brine and looked for the definition. Brine should not make chicken rubbery. There was not hot water at the hand washing sink. We were disappointed and later cancelled a reservation we had previously made for next week with friends. I do not like posting negative reviews. I hope the description of my experience helps the inept managers fix the problems we had that evening. read more

The restaurant itself is beautiful but it is very compact and I would recommend reservations any day just to be safe. The team are all very accommodating and were able to explain the menu to us. It was absolutely worth a trip, since we had never had trinidadian food before and we enjoy trying new cuisines. I would caution that, if you do not like spicy food, you probably won't like it. I got the butternut squash soup and every few bites, there was a bite with a ton of cumin that made my mouth tingle. My wife loves spicy food but some of her stuff was the same way. More spicy for the sake of being spicy rather than for the flavor of the peppers. read more

I was so happy to hear that callaloo was open again (just to go) a few weeks ago. What happened to the nice people (young and Trinidadian) who worked there? The food was the similar to the callaloo before but the lady who dropped the bags at me was rude! My husband wanted the food again so we went back next week and it was closed again read more

The curried chicken buss-up-shut is delicious! The mixture of chicken, curry and chickpeas and potatoes was perfect to be scooped up with the buds-up-shut (flaky bread). Sauces on the side were great compliments to the dish, as well. Portion sizes are hefty. We will be back! read more

My wife and I stopped in for a quick lunch. We only had 25m to order and eat before needing to pick up our child from school. Service was incredibly fast, and the food, amazing! I had the roti with beef and was blown away. Will be back for sure! read more
