Stopped in over a convention weekend wanting to support local business and avoid delivery services. We typically avoid Chinese/Japanese places during cons as they tend to get packed and take forever to get food just on the sheer volume of attendees all wanting Asian Cuisine. I couldn't fight the sushi craving though so we relented and stopped in on the recommendation of a friend who's a regular here on con weekend. I had a basic combo of California roll, Salmon roll, and tuna roll with salad and husband had a Philly Roll and Eel Roll. Another home run! Sushi was fresh and delicious. Prepared in a good amount of time. We called an order in and in less than 30 min we had our food. Impressive again since this is a pretty popular stop during the weekend. read more

we went to dinner here as a family in April 2026. It should've been a warning that the restaurant, and I use that term loosely, was completely empty. The single hostess actually seemed surprised to see anyone coming in. The restaurant wasn't dirty per se, but it was cluttered and dimly lit. A motor scooter was leaning up against a wall right inside the doorway. We were greeted with room temperature tap water served in small Styrofoam cups as an opener, very 'low rent', and as it turns out, a grim harbinger of things to come. Perhaps it was morbid curiosity that kept us in her chairs, but we ordered several items off the menu, including sushi, edamame, green seaweed salad, a soup, noodles, fried rice, and salt and a shrimp dish. All of this was served in to-go containers or on paper plates. I got what seemed to be the only drinking glass in the establishment when I asked for a soda with ice. We were given plastic utensils to eat with. The plastic utensils we were given turned out to be a non-issue. With the exception of the edamame, the food was so terrible that none of us endeavored to use those utensils much beyond the first few bites. The soup tasted old and burned, the sushi tasteless, the shrimp suspiciously soft. The noodles were covered with a watery, peanut-butter like substance but without the taste. The white rice placed on the table was clearly old. The fried rice was bland and tasteless. No one in my family could finish their meals. Update: My credit card statement from Sakura lists "88 Chinese Express" - the Chinese restaurant next door.... Is it possible that our orders placed in Sakura, a Japanese restaurant, were farmed out to a Chinese Take-out joint?! Wow! read more

This was in a super walkable area so it was a plus that we could walk there. It is a small place that is nothing fancy. But the food does not disappoint!! The sushi was fantastic. I would highly recommend the Osaka roll but keep in mind it does have peanuts in it. Also loved the Fire Ice Roll.. it was warm and had yummy cream cheese in it. The people with me really liked the TNT Roll.. it was deep fried and very crunchy and all the flavors came together to make it a great mouthful. The sweet and sour chicken was served up warm and deconstructed which we liked because you can put the sauce on as heavy as you want. They gave us a generous portion size. Never a big fan of "Asian Fusion" type restaurants, but if it's Sushi you want, this is the place to go in Lancaster. This place was recommended to me by a friend who lives in Lancaster and travels around the world, so I trusted his judgement. He was spot on. Sushi is good and fresh and well presented. Service, while a little slow, was courteous and helpful, recommending certain items on the menu which were all tasty. Beer was cold and saké was hot- great on a chilly December night. Decor is nice, the place is a bit small, but does not feel cramped. They have many other items on the menu, but since I stuck to Sushi, I cannot say anything about the other items, but my dining companions had cooked entrees and said it was delicious. Came here after shopping nearby and was not disappointed! It seemed quiet and empty inside, but the phones did not stop ringing with takeout orders. There was only one employee at the front of house, but she did an incredible job managing the phones, the registers, and serving tables. She was very sweet and made the experience great. All of the food came out pretty quickly and was fresh and delicious. The tempura was cooked perfectly and crispy. The sushi was AMAZING! And the walnuts shrimp and sweet and sour tofu we ordered were both crispy and well seasoned. The only thing lacking was the mango sticky rice, which was a little undercooked, but still pretty good. I've gotten to eat here for the last few years while attending Zenkaikon at the Lancaster County Convention Center. This year I doubled up and ate here twice. Sakura is not a large restaurant but does have a decent amount of seating, if you have a group call ahead as during dinner I saw people who could not be seated. I was seated quickly for dinner and went with sushi. Picked three rolls that included Eel Avocado Roll, TNT Roll, and Fire Crunchy Roll. Eel Avocado was good as expected and the Fire Crunchy Roll had a unique flavor thanks to the Shrimp tempura. The TNT Roll was underwhelming as it was fried a little harder than I would have cared for. I stopped eating the outside of the roll at the end. Service was good for how busy Sakura was. The next day for lunch I intended to get some Issei Noodle, but they already had a 25 minute wait. Sakura was not busy at the time and went with more sushi. Waitress was lovely and saved me some money as two of the rolls I ordered are part of the Lunch special. Went with the Boston Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and Mexican Roll. Spring Roll that came with lunch was average. Boston Roll was almost a salad in a sushi roll, making it quite interesting. Philadelphia Roll was full of cream cheese and fish as expected. Mexican Roll has an interesting non spicy flavor that's hard to describe but was good. Over the years this place has really grown on me and I enjoy the sushi. Service has also gotten better and it was time to give Sakura a full five star review. read more

This will be pretty short. So we have always liked the food but what I saw discussed me pretty bad. We had already ordered and we're eating but I had to pee. On the way to the bathroom you have to pass the servers drink station. The young Asian girl carried a bag of ice out from the back. Through it on the floor a couple times then put the entire bag right into the ice bin. Broke it open and poured the ice in. Now that floor is not clean enough to eat off of. Everyone from the street walks right where she banged the ice on the floor. We have not been able to go back. I'm sorry but that was disgusting! read more

Met friends here who live in Lancaster. We arrived around six and instantly got a table. Everything was clean and we had friendly service. Our waitress was great. Checked on our drinks multiple times and didn't chase us out when we lingered chatting. We all ordered sushi and beers. They don't have any on draft which I was sort of bummed about but I went for a Sapporo can. Service was five star but the meal itself was the 3 star. The sushi was decent, not the best, but not terrible. If I'm looking for sushi in Lancaster again I'll probably check out somewhere else since this was subpar to my normal sushi spot. read more

The sushi was really mediocre and incredibly overpriced for the quality I'm getting, the total was nearly 30 dollars for 2 rolls... The sakura roll was served with orange not lemon, there was barely any avocado and I didn't taste the wasabi mayo. The snow white roll wasn't wrapped in soybean paper, it was just regular seaweed. I think I'd stick to wasabi from now on when it comes to sushi.. atleast it's cheaper and the quality is about the same. read more

The biggest highlight of our trip to Sakura was how nice the staff was. They are very attentive to your table and provide a very warm and welcoming service. The sushi is fresh enough and tasty, and their entrees were very satisfying as well. I had a dish with honey glazed prawns and caramelized walnuts (always opt for the brown rice, it tastes better). The atmosphere is very standard but intimate, you get fried crisps with a sweet and sour dip for the table, and they have a full bar available also (Enjoyed a Saporro with my meal). I would definitely recommend Sakura as a great place for dinner or lunch when you're in the always eclectic downtown Lancaster. read more

Three stars because the food is delicious. Only three stars because the service is the worst I have ever experienced. If the food wasn't so good I would not give any stars at all. If I go back I will not be waited on by the same person. Update: we actually just found out that our bill had been changed to increase the tip. When called, my boyfriend was told "it must have been an accident. If he really wants his three dollars he can come get it." The woman then got back on to say "since we don't have the slip that is the best we can do." As a previous restaurant industry worker myself, I KNOW there is no way that they do not have our slip. I am furious at the response we have been given and they have lost our business. I will also not be quiet about this experience to my family and friends. This is extremely upsetting, as it was my partner's favorite place to eat and we will not be back. Terrible. My three star rating is now a one star rating. read more

My plate of food is placed down and a cockroach walks right out from under my plate and across the table. We signal for a manager - she comes over to our table, brushes the cockroach onto the floor near my feet and lets us know "It's gone now." I proceed to lose my sh*t and explain that it's just on the floor by my feet to which she stomps it under the table. "It's gone now!" she repeats, laughing. What a fantastic place to go with a family. The sushi was delicious, especially the sashimi. But more than that the staff was kind, welcoming and wonderful with my 2 and 4 year old daughters. The kids menu provided enormous portions of really good food with rice included for seven dollars. The shrimp lo mein and hibachi chicken were big hits. The three of us were having a hard time making a decision on where to go and what to eat, and I'll have to say we were delighted to have chosen Sakura. This was maybe my third time in, and I have yet to be dissapointed, but this visit was good enough for me to dust off my Yelp icon and type this before lunch today. Our servers were on point... Great option in the downtown section. The lunch specials are filling and delicious. Surprisingly good Pad Thai for $9-$10. Ive tried the sushi and it's consistently good. Not the best out there, but a good option. You can eat in but it is a small space. I typically order to go. They do have a small bar, but I have not ordered alcohol here as of yet. This was an excellent surprise. The Lancaster that I first new almost 50 years ago would be lucky to have a good pizza shop (there was the House of Pizza!). Today, with restaurants like this the city can boast quality food the equal of Philadelphia. The crispy beef was fantastic with the heat adjusted to being tangy without inducing Apnea. Went here on a Saturday night around 6:30pm and experienced what is possibly the slowest service I've ever had at a restaurant in this country. It is a small restaurant, less than 10 tables total. When we came in they were half full and then we ordered. After we ordered, things picked up and the restaurant got full, but again it's a small restaurant. We waited and waited for our food. We observed a table that was seated long after we had ordered, get their food first. Eventually out sushi appetizers came. After almost half hour, our entrees still hadn't arrived and our server was nowhere to be found. We were over it and were going to ask for our check and leave as we had been waiting about an hour while we saw others get their food. Right then the food finally came. It's was quite good in flavor and that was the saving grace. I enjoyed my sushi and hibachi and a friend that got the pad Thai loved it. Was very excited to have sushi at this place. Went here with 3 of my friends. We arrived just as they opened and ordered fairly shortly after we came in. Our one friend received her food right away and then we waited 40 minutes before she finished her food and the rest of us still hadn't gotten ours. Oh Lancaster, I feel so sorry for you. If this restaurant manages to get a 4.5 star average, then these must be the same people who believe McDonald's has great burgers. I am a huge sushi fan, and to be honest, I devour it at least once a week, which I'd like to say adds to my credibility as a decent sushi critic. I ordered all special rolls: 007, Godzilla, fire dragon, dynamite, shrimp tempura, jalapeño roll, and tiger roll. I could write an essay on how bad each roll was, but I will limit myself to key points. Fish to rice ratio is horrible, and the fish that I managed to find deep inside was not fresh. The crab was imitation. The jalapeño roll had a piece of jalapeño that was extremely small and carried no heat. The shrimp tempura was all tempura batter (might as well just call it a panko roll). Five stars for the sweet lady who served us. Another star for the cool (but deceiving) sushi names. Minus five for making me eat rotten fish. If you're into small portions and paying top dollar for "good" fish, this is your place! I'm sorry, that came off sarcasm but I meant it in a literal sense. I've been all over the country as well as Japan, and have been fortunate to try some of the best and worst sushi ever made. This is not the worst sushi, but it certainly is not the best. In between his texting, and finally taking my order, he refused to comprehend the word "nigiri" and kept correcting me to use the word sushi to describe my pair of salmon and yellow tail on rice. If it's not sashimi, it's nigiri. But apparently he didn't like that and made me feel like I was stupid. Hmmmm.... none the less, I ordered "sushi" and a "sushi roll". The roll was $12 and was about the size of a hotdog! This was hands down the most money I've ever spent on a salmon roll with rice paper, spicy mayo and rice. If it had toro in it, I might understand... but that should've been $8 tops. The nigiri... sorry... "Sushi" was sliced super thin. About half the width of a pencil. The yellow tail was delicious and the salmon lean with little fatty content (which was a bummer). Being so close to the ocean, I'm surprised the fish quality wasn't better. I'm from Kentucky and we have sushi places that have incredibly fresh fish. It seems strange to me this place is highly rated with such poor service, quality of fish and portion sizes. I will say the atmosphere and decor is nice! They have a great sake selection, plenty of rolls and a slightly above average fish selection. Unfortunately, I wouldn't pay this much money for such small rolls and thinly sliced "sushi" where the rice outweighs the fish 4 to 1. If you want sake and a mini bar, come hang out. It's 3:30pm on a Monday and it's a holiday AND I'm craving for Japanese Food! So, early dinner at Sakura sounds interesting. We've been walking through several closed stores and sitting in a nice cool restaurant was the next best thing to do with my honey. Started off with the Agedashi Tofu which was great! Crunchy and the sauce was a perfect complement. We are both James Bond fans and the 007 Roll had to be tried. Eel, salmon, cucumber cream cheese, mango topped with smoked salmon and lime and topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. It tasted as yummy as it sounds. I love eel, so I chose the Fire Dragon Roll, eel, avocado wrapped around shrimp tempura with masago on top. I did not share! Hahaha, ok, I lied, I gave my sweetie one piece! Then when we were done, we figured we wanted the Fancy Salmon Roll, salmon wrapped around tuna, white fish and cucumber with masago on top. What I liked about Sakura is that the amount of rice to filling is just right. Not too much rice. The sauces are added to complement the roll, not to overpower or cover up bad fish flavors. It's there if you like it. The wait staff was very friendly and took care of us. Well, we were the only ones eating at the time. But she was naturally friendly, I think. All in all. I went here for lunch and ordered the lunch special - miso soup with a spicy tuna roll and an alaskan roll. Miso soup was OK. Spicy tuna was not spicy - the sauce was kind of strange. Alaskan roll was OK. Unfortunately, I have had worse sushi, but I definitely have had much better sushi. There were other parties in there (on a Thursday for lunch) - so maybe it is the best sushi in Lancaster - sorry locals!! I've had enough experience with sushi to tell the good from the bad, and Sakura's is phenomenal. I frequent this place for Sushi, but have tried some other items from their chinese menu and everything I've had was excellent. I suppose the freshness of their ingredients isn't surprising, given the abundance of flawless locally grown produce and meat. Their prices are very good, particularly now that they've revamped their lunch specials. Service is great, though the food can take a bit to get to the table--a small snag I can only attribute to the place being at capacity most of the times I've been there. The place itself is beautiful; it's a bit dark, but there's light exactly where you need it. I'd consider the decor to be trendy without being pretentious. Definitely one of the best looking Asian fusion/sushi bars I've been to. Sakura has been and remains the standard to which I compare every sushi bar I go to. Thus far, none have surpassed it. p.s. Doesn't matter, when it comes to sushi, it had better be on point. The rolls: Crazy Girl Roll - Tp. calamari, avocado, asparagus inside; topped with spicy salmon, nuta sauce and momiji sauce. Out of Control Roll - tuna, yellowtail, salmon, avocado inside; topped with tuna and salmon, nuta sauce, spicy mayo and eel sauce. Spider Roll - soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado, lettuce inside; caviar and eel sauce outside. The Crazy Girl and Out of Control rolls were each drowning in sauce, seemingly attempting to hide the "not so fresh" fish taste. The Spider roll, again, just not fresh. It's clear from the reviews that others have enjoyed many a fine meal here. Alas, my first visit will be my last to Sakura. read more

Looking around the area for a place to eat a good meal on a recent Monday evening, we came upon this sushi house. As the only customers in the place, we sat at the sushi bar (more people filtered in after a while). Music seemed intrusively loud. After a while, I asked politely for the volume to be lowered. I received a simple apology and the volume was lowered promptly and without fuss. Kumamoto oysters (served as "shooters") - excellent Unfiltered sake - very nice Miso soup - delicious and satisfying Various sushi and sashimi - tasty and fresh Their "Signature" roll - delightful. Our attempt to find a table at Annie Bailey's was unsuccessful, so we wandered downtown, comtemplating heading back out of town to Rice and Noodles. However, we stumbled across Sakura and made a night of it. First of all, on a Saturday night this place rapidly filled up by 8 PM. We were lucky enough to grab a table w/o reservations, but that's not generally the case after 8. Make reservations on weekends. Service was very good. Our server had to come back to confirm an order, but she kept the glasses filled and food was ready in a timely fashion. Ambience was likewise pretty solid. Dim lighting, quiet music, upscale settings. As for the food, appetizers were good...seaweed salad and spring rolls, both $5. For entrees, I poured over the menu- overwhelming- and picked the tri-fun...shrimp, chicken, and steak with mixed veggies in a brown sauce. The server said "great choice"....which got my hopes up...but, I have to give it an "ehhh" rating. Not the most flavorful meal. I wouldn't quite call it a frozen-dinner offering, but it was just plain. My wife, on the other hand, picked a winner...pinapple curry shrimp. I never tasted anything so sweet with such a unexpected kick. Really good. Both were in the $15 range. I hate to lay waste to a resturaunt for a ho-hum meal, but I suppose the meal was my choice, so hence my problem...or is it? Shouldn't every menu offering be a homerun?
