Five-Stars all the way around for Sean and his team at California Window & Fireplace for my new Velux skylight systems! I have been waiting to write this review, so I could give Cal Window some big props on handling two separate disputes with the Velux factory for a new product they introduced this year - custom-size blinds. While Velux is arguably the best skylight manufacturer out there, they also appeared to have some operational issues launching their new custom-blinds product and twice shipped two incorrect orders, first with a skylight, then with blinds. I do want to applaud Sean for how he handled things in a winsome way. Velux didn't want to own the first mistake, but Sean was persistent and was able to drive it to resolution...and then same on the second mistake the Velux factory made. All three skylights are now installed with the correct custom-size automated blinds and they work great...and the skylights are great! Thank you Sean, Gloria, Alex, Nancy, and Patrick for the constant communication letting me know where things stood. I am looking forward to working with you all again! read more

I ordered a Heat & Glo gas fireplace insert and was not disappointed. Sean was very knowledgeable and very helpful. Once I selected the insert he made the appointment to come out and measure. He gave me an estimated timeframe of when they would receive the insert. The insert was received within the timeframe and prompt with the install appointment. The guys that installed the insert did a very good job.....wow. They protected the floor and even vacuumed afterwards. They went over the use of the remote and maintenance of the unit. I didn't even visit their showroom. Everything was done over the phone. I went online and found the fireplace I wanted. I found Cal Window/Fireplace through the manufacturer website. I wanted to see the fireplace in person. I called Cal Window and Fireplace, Patrick let me know they didn't have the fireplace I wanted on display. But he said he could order it and save on the shipping because they're a local dealer. I would still recommend checking out their showroom. I placed my order over the phone. There was a little delay, because the first unit was damaged in shipping so a second unit was sent. The fireplace we purchased was just a prefabricated unit (it's just covered with concrete backer board). We had ours marble stone veneered before recording the attached video. We invested a substantial amount of time researching. California Window and Fireplace has the most attractive products and prices. We recently purchased a new gas fireplace and a new gas stove from Sean. Instead of heating the entire home we now just keep the rooms we are in are extra toasty and with extra ambiance. California Window and FirePlace installed our new gas insert inside our existing fireplace. It was installed Nov 2018. We just love the insert. They continue to do our yearly maintenance at a resonable fee. This last year we had a leak from the chimney on the glass insert. The water ruined the glass and the timer. California Window and Fireplace helped us by recommending people. The owner stated we needed to find the source of the leak. They helped guide us to take the correct steps in the repair and replacement process. The leak was not caused by anything that California Window &Fireplace did. Because of the water damage we had to get a new class cover and timer. I am not sure what we would have done without their honest guidance. The manufacturer Regency fireplaces was contacted and they sent a special fire board which is now included in the installation of every fireplace. I purchased a gas fireplace from this buisness a year ago. I did my research before I went in for an appt, due to covid, I basically knew what I was looking for. Sean asked me a few questions and showed me a couple of models he thought would fit best for my needs and price range. Within the next couple of days, Sean came to my house to evaluate my fireplace and take measurements. Before I decided to finalize and order, I had several different questions, which Sean replied quickly and answered all of them. Due to it being their high season for fireplaces, we ordered and installation was schuduled and installed in the appropriate time. The Heat and Glow Supreme I-30 is perfect for the house and we absoluetly love it! Moving forward to almost a year later, we recently had a small issue with the fireplace. Again being their high season again, they squeezed us into their schduele within a week. Rob (been with company 15 yrs) and Tyler are the technicians that came out to fix the issue. They were very confident that they could fix it, which it ended up being a loose wire and they did fix it. While, they were here they also cleaned the glass and situated a few of the ambers in the fireplace and stayed while for while to make sure it was running smoothly. VERY thorough!! This is a family own business for 28 years, who cares about the selling you the RIGHT product for your needs (no up selling) and they also care AFTER the sell of the fireplace. Small company that doesn't seem to be well organized or efficient. If there is no issue with your purchase, install, or unit itself, then they are fine to work with. However, if you have any problems, they will overpromise to fix the issue and under deliver. Unless you call frequently to follow up, nothing will happen and nothing will be done. Lack of communication from them is very frustrating for the customer. Service tech was NOT Covid compliant. Would frequently remove his mask in my home, did not wear shoe coverings, and would stand too close to me and touch my phone. I had to repeatedly ask him to keep his mask on. I will not be a repeat customer. I would rather go out of the area to find another better company to work with that go back to California Window and Fireplace. read more

Their service was "terrible." They have a beautiful showroom, but they did not do a good/efficient job on installing my fireplace. The job took too long, they made several mistakes and had to come back several times, causing delays. Once it was completed, the fireplace installation completely fell out on the first use (while the fireplace was lit)...we're lucky no one got hurt! When I called them to share my experience, one of the owners, Bob Volheim, told me that he threatened to sue another customer if he followed through with giving them a a bad rating on Next Door. They demanded (not nicely) that the balance be paid immediately. I also received a threatening voicemail about immediate payment. My contractor will not be using them any more. A friend also told me she walked out of their showroom because of poor service. It was a very bad experience and I do not recommend anyone using them. read more

I echo the sentiments of the recent few reviews. Total "I could care less if you bought from us or not" attitude. We got a quote for a Regency back in October from Matt Bustamante. At that time, he came in and measured our opening and told us that the Regency model we had spent two hours picking out would work and sent us the measurements to share with our contractor . Fast forward to today, it turns out that Matt had sent us measurements for a different brand - his explanation being "well maybe you told me to get a different one - it's been months and you're not my only customer". Long story short - when you're going to spend $4K you expect the sales person to be a bit more understanding of customers needing guidance and clarity in the process, rather than "stop wasting my time" attitude. Beware!**CA Windows & Fireplace are CROOKS** We wanted to replace the glass of one of our fireplaces that randomly shattered. Used this company because that's where we got the glass first when building. Plus they're a family business and wanted to give them our business. Bad choice!! We contacted them on December 22, 2015, wanted to talk to Sean but talked to Morzella who said STEPHANIE will call us back. We told Morzella what happened to our glass, gave the model number, dimensions and style information. She said she'll put in the order and with installation it'll cost $650. She asked for the credit card # and said it'll be here in 3 weeks, which should have been the second week of January. That she'd call when it's here and we'll schedule an installation appointment. Sounds good right?! January past, we called, Stephanie said they're very busy and would call back at the end of the day to discuss. NO WORD. February past, we called again, Stephanie said she'd call at the end of the day. NO WORD. They called a few days into March and said they'll come to install on March 18. The day of they called to cancel without setting a new date. On March 23, 2016 - We called THREE TIMES and finally Stephanie answered and said she'll (guess!) call back at the end of the day. No word. STEPHANIE's classic line is, "I'll call you at the end of the day." On April 12, 2016 - We called FOUR TIMES and spoke with Shana who said she'll tell Stephanie to call. No word!! April 19, 2016 - CALLED FIVE TIMES! They called back and said they'll come to install on the 23rd. Sending two weird white guys who had no idea what they were doing. Turns out it was the wrong glass. Too small. UGH! So, we did what any other person would do, we called other places** and put a stop payment on our credit card to refund the money for the glass that WE NEVER RECEIVED. Wouldn't you do the same?! Not about to sit around till "it's our turn" to get a call back or have them order the right glass, playing phone tag, especially if we have to wait 3+ MONTHS for a call back. That's pathetic and frankly not how to do business. Guess what happened?! All of a sudden STEPHANIE started calling. Lol. "Call us back to schedule an installation date... blah blah blah." Anyways, by the end of April, we had already found a new fireplace glass company. The owner of the NEW place was very organized! We ordered, paid and made an appointment for installation. And best of all he actually calls you back when he says he will. And finally have a new glass! **The new fireplace glass company is called, Fireplace Window, in Redwood City. They charged us $173 for the new glass, while CA Windows & Fireplace was charging $500 (just for the glass). ****Now CA Windows & Fireplace is fighting for the money from our credit card company!! EXCUSE ME, YOU DIDN'T DO YOUR PART, NEVER CALLED BACK, AND NEVER GOT THE FIREPLACE GLASS RIGHT... Why are you disputing the money from our credit card?! DO YOUR JOB RIGHT!! I can't say enough good things about this place. We purchased our house back in February (2015) and the closing agreements included fixing one of the newly installed fireplaces. After having a nightmare experience with another installer called TheFireplace Element, I found California Window & Fireplace. From the first phone call they were a pleasure to work with. If they said they'd call, they called. They showed up when they said they would. Most importantly they were very polite, even when I had to reschedule at the last minute. I will say, you do need to plan ahead. They are busy. Don't expect to get next day service in the middle of winter. This is their busiest time. Plan ahead and have your fireplace serviced in the summer months and you won't have to wait as long. I didn't plan ahead this year, so I ended up having to wait a few weeks for service. read more

We were in the market for an modern gas fireplace insert. We viewed three different fireplace stores in the area and decided to use California Window & Fireplace because they were 1) very responsive, 2) reasonably priced, and 3) knowledgable about products and alternatives. Our sales representative was Jesse and we were going to move forward with a stylish Mendota insert. Love! As we proceeded down the path of installing our new insert however, we ran across a road block - our fireplace wasn't a good candidate for the particular insert we wanted. Our sizing was wrong. Major bummer! However, its good to know that California Window and Fireplace won't sell you a product that isn't a good fit for your home, and that they put professionalism above profit. I was referred here by my contractor, who had a client recently with a great experience at California W&F and found that they had a great price on what he wanted. However I felt like they could care less that I was there, weren't interested in really helping me, and I certainly didn't get the "warm fuzzies" that made me want to stay and shop. It's such a service-oriented industry and I didn't get a good service feel. If I just wanted to look at photos of fireplaces & physical specs, I could do that via Google at home in my PJs. We originally bought our gas fireplace from California Window & Fireplace, in 2000. We called for service, but an error was made in installation of the wrong part, and it came to light when I questioned the charge. The company (Sean) rectified it immediately, and insisted on giving us the right part without charge, and were amazingly kind, apologetic and wonderful about it. Mistakes happen, and service technicians sometimes in the rush of life install incorrect parts. But the customer is not always honored and respected in the way that we were.
