Gas valve that has an 8% leak, per city of Palo Alto. no other leaks
    Paige P.

I called Corinne to let her know I was coming in. When I got there Corruine indicated she was busy and I waited about 15 minutes for Tristan behind the counter to help me. I was very open and honest about the servicing I needed on our 20-year-old vented gas logs and burner - a simple replacement gas line valve. I spoke with Tristan at length (30 minutes) about our specific needs for cleaning and service and provided multiple pictures and explained the unit was in working order - we just had a leak from the emergency valve. I was quoted a rate of $375 and scheduled. I got an email from Corinne the next day canceling the appointment indicating they would not service my unit. Given that 1.) the unit was already in working order and 2.) only needed a gas line replacement, and 3.) they indicated a cleaning was included in their price, and 4.) I called before I went in person and spent a lot of time deciding to replace the whole unit or just repair the line, this was an incredibly disappointing and upsetting experience. When I do replace the unit, I will not be doing so with The Fireplace Element. FWIW, after receiving the cancelation email, I called F&S FIREPLACE SYSTEMS and they quoted me $275, $100 less than the canceled quote from The Fireplace Element and am scheduled for next week.

    Finished fireplace!

We are so lucky to have found Corrine and have them build and install our beautiful electric fireplace, granite and mantle. They are masters at what they do and I highly recommend them!

Complete end-to-end service to provide and install fireplace and hearth. The result is fantastic! It is hard to find a natural stone fireplace, and even harder to find someone to install it. Gerard did it all, and even reworked the baseboards and flooring around the fireplace for a complete finished result. I cannot emphasize enough how unique it is to find someone who will both provide and install a natural stone fireplace. The quality and level of service are unmatched!

My builder constructed the wall framing, added an electrical run, and redirected the existing gas line. I live near the showroom so Aaron didn't mind stopping by to perform the pre-installation inspection. I was super fortunate to be able to snag an open installation appointment just one week later. 2 guys on the EmberWest install team came by and reworked my existing flue, chimney topper, and of course installed the new fireplace. I'm currently waiting for my builder to close up the wall and install the mantel, wall ledger tiles, and hearth. Once this is complete I will be calling Aaron to schedule our final log setup and testing. I realize this review is being written before my project is done but everything has gone perfectly so far and I expect the final setup will be more of the same - perfection!

Even though they kindly let me know they weren't taking new clients this year, Aaron still took the time to ask for our fireplace model number and photos. To my surprise, he actually called and walked us through a few standard troubleshooting steps over the phone! We could see the igniter wire glow red-orange but turn off after a few seconds. He explained that was a good sign -- then suggested we leave it on, and toggle the wall switch as needed to help the system reset. After a few tries, the pilot light finally came on, and then the fireplace kicked in! Aaron explained that when a fireplace hasn't been used in a while, the gas line can fill with air -- you just have to let it run a bit to clear it out. I really appreciate Aaron's kindness, patience, and expertise -- especially even though we weren't official clients.! Thanks to his guidance, our fireplace is working again, and we'll be staying warm all winter. Highly recommend!

Like many customers I wanted to put a TV over a fireplace without it being too high off the ground as this makes for an unpleasant viewing experience. One way to do this is to use the "cool wall" type of installation, which lets you locate a TV right above the fireplace, but this requires building a chase into the room - and the particular room we have is too small for this to be a good idea. I also did not want to use one of the mantle mount options for our TV because that would also bring the TV into the room when lowering it for use which would thereby also reduce the size of the room in front of the TV. So we had a bit of a conundrum. But penguin showed us some options, which allowed us to get our TV low enough without using a mantel mount or a chase at all. Specifically, they showed us an insert that you could put directly on a concrete floor and a noncombustible mantle which you could locate just a few inches over the fireplace opening without risking fire safety. (As a point of comparison, locating a typical combustible mantle above a fireplace requires strictly specified minimum distance, which in effect leads to a much much higher minimum TV installation height..) We also went with a custom surround, which makes the gas insert that we went with look a lot bigger, and also a good proportion for the space that we have... And the design of the insert itself makes it look a whole lot deeper and wider than it actually is by using reflective glass. I'm really pleased with how this turned out. For the wall tile, I'd always had a dream of doing board form concrete and penguin did a fantastic job installing it. This is a fiberglass reinforced concrete veneer product I got from Wall Theory in the color "natural gray." It's worth mentioning that I visited another store that did not think of the options we went with, which left me scratching my head as I stared at a pile of catalogs that they shared instead. Go with Penguin.

He showed me where other people were trying to sell me "fixes" I didn't need. He patiently answered all my questions as an uneducated but curious homeowner comparing multiple quotes. He responded quickly to all texts and calls and was always very kind and generous with his time. The quote for the work I decided to do was similar / less than another company I looked at and Mr Chimney seemed like a far more professional company in terms of communication, presenting options, estimate, etc. Their office seems understaffed (maybe just 1 person working there?), but Erica is super nice and sent the estimate and scheduled the job...best to call her because they must be overwhelmed with email and I didn't get a response to email. The day of the work, the workers came on time, were super nice and explained everything and answered all my questions. They were supposed to do a number of repairs including fix my damper. They unfortunately said the damper couldn't be fixed but they were able to close it and I don't plan to use the fireplace, so they removed the charge whereas other companies might have charged me just for getting it to move enough to close fully or tried to talk me into replacing it. They simply presented the options and their costs and said I could decide later if I decide to use the fireplace. The workers were neat and clean, worked efficiently, and the chimney looks brand new after their repairs. After the work, I was cleaning leaves out of my gutters, and thought I saw some cement dust that had blown into the gutters during the work and was worried it could turn to cement in the rain and clog my gutters. I called Martin and he sent his workers back the next day to clean it up. He told me actually it was not cement dust but some debris from the roof but his team kindly cleaned it out anyway to assuage my concern-- truly old fashioned customer-centered values which is rare in this day and age. I would hire them again for any work and highly recommend them. Thanks, Martin, Erica, and team!!
