Corroded back missing refractory panel L-side
Contessa S.

This company sold me a new Enviro insert unit that was not complete - it was missing parts. The installer they hired informed me 3 years ago the unit wasn't complete and that he had to return to finish the install. He told me not to pay for the installation until the parts were installed. He took the remote telling me that I shouldn't start the fireplace. Bay Area Fireplace lost track of the parts missing, insisted I was lying, and never returned to the job site when we withheld payment for an incomplete installation and missing parts. Carlos kept insisting that nothing was wrong with the fireplace and that no parts were missing and we were trying to avoid paying them. It was so unprofessional we just walked away. Carlos insisted no parts were missing and refused to inspect the fireplace or do a site visit to investigate. Fast forward two years of having a hole in the wall. We hired someone else to finish the install. The unit consistently ran hot - you could barely touch the stone outside of it. Definitely not safe. Turns out the fire refractory panels were missing! They gaslit me for 42 months telling me I was making up the fact that parts were missing. The unit is completely damaged on the inside after 4 uses. So, we call and ask for a warranty claim. They refuse to open one. I sent loads of pictures, they inspect the unit and tell me that I need to paint the inside blaming a chimney cap we had to replace because they didn't properly seal the one they installed and it flew off our chimney into the neighbor's yard. We contacted the manufacturer and the distributor for two years complaining about the unit we couldn't use because of these clowns. Finally, the distributor sends someone over to inspect. They write up a report and inform me that the refractory panels are missing and the wiring is damaged due to it. I kinda knew something was wrong with the interior. Carlos kept insisting that I was a "know it all" and I should trust him. Trust him?! He came and inspected my fireplace and didn't even notice the panels were missing. HELLO! How incompetent and dishonest! Carlos immediately tried to blame me and accused me of taking the panels out myself!!!! Who does that to a customer? I paid for the unit in full and they did not deliver to the contract AT ALL. Their installer told me years previously that parts were missing. Their poor paper trail, management, and incompetence could have caused an electrical fire and our house to burn down. Now they won't honor the purchase and replace the unit with a brand new one. The manager was supposed to call me for 3 years and I have not heard from this ghost of a nonexistent person. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. We are suing them for the fireplace unit, damages, and loss of use. If you have any issues with Carlos as we did, don't waste your time. Take them straight to court. They will dance you out of warranty with their gaslighting and outright lies. Your sanity is worth much more than the cost of doing business with people who can't keep track of orders, don't honor contracts, lie to discredit you, drive you insane with their posturing and the whole time KNOW THEY ARE BEING DISHONEST. I can't believe they are still in business. UPDATE: Hash's response is all lies. BAF did install this fireplace and did not complete the installation due to the missing parts. Hash never contacted me once to resolve and Carlos didn't notice the panels were missing upon inspection 3 years later, which is two months ago. He claimed he would replace them after we sent him the report from the distributor's installer and then didn't repair the unit. Please look at the photos we have uploaded to understand these guys have no idea what they are doing and are incredibly dishonest. I have no idea why they think we would make this up or waste our time when the UNIT was paid for in full and included the PANELS that they did not include in the build of the unit. We did a partial payment for install because it was not completed due to the status of waiting for the missing parts, which BAF never came to complete. We hired another party to complete the install as we were informed that there were no missing parts by Bay Area Fireplace. We later learned when our stone cracked and the house almost caught on fire that the unit was indeed NOT complete and that Bay Area Fireplace had sold us an incomplete unit. Just look at their response. They are lying through their teeth and trying to make it look like it was us who somehow built a unit incorrectly! It is built onsite and delivered. Their installer was correct that the unit was not complete, therefore he couldn't finish the install, which had numerous issues that did not abide by the manufacturer's installation guides. BUYER BEWARE.

Thank you Drhash and Bay Area Fireplace for doing a great job for my fireplace. Drhash, the owner of the business came to my house and made sure that the job get done with the highest quality. He took extra effort to get the best outcome for customers. Honest, competence, reasonable price we're what I could say about this business.

Like many customers I wanted to put a TV over a fireplace without it being too high off the ground as this makes for an unpleasant viewing experience. One way to do this is to use the "cool wall" type of installation, which lets you locate a TV right above the fireplace, but this requires building a chase into the room - and the particular room we have is too small for this to be a good idea. I also did not want to use one of the mantle mount options for our TV because that would also bring the TV into the room when lowering it for use which would thereby also reduce the size of the room in front of the TV. So we had a bit of a conundrum. But penguin showed us some options, which allowed us to get our TV low enough without using a mantel mount or a chase at all. Specifically, they showed us an insert that you could put directly on a concrete floor and a noncombustible mantle which you could locate just a few inches over the fireplace opening without risking fire safety. (As a point of comparison, locating a typical combustible mantle above a fireplace requires strictly specified minimum distance, which in effect leads to a much much higher minimum TV installation height..) We also went with a custom surround, which makes the gas insert that we went with look a lot bigger, and also a good proportion for the space that we have... And the design of the insert itself makes it look a whole lot deeper and wider than it actually is by using reflective glass. I'm really pleased with how this turned out. For the wall tile, I'd always had a dream of doing board form concrete and penguin did a fantastic job installing it. This is a fiberglass reinforced concrete veneer product I got from Wall Theory in the color "natural gray." It's worth mentioning that I visited another store that did not think of the options we went with, which left me scratching my head as I stared at a pile of catalogs that they shared instead. Go with Penguin.

My builder constructed the wall framing, added an electrical run, and redirected the existing gas line. I live near the showroom so Aaron didn't mind stopping by to perform the pre-installation inspection. I was super fortunate to be able to snag an open installation appointment just one week later. 2 guys on the EmberWest install team came by and reworked my existing flue, chimney topper, and of course installed the new fireplace. I'm currently waiting for my builder to close up the wall and install the mantel, wall ledger tiles, and hearth. Once this is complete I will be calling Aaron to schedule our final log setup and testing. I realize this review is being written before my project is done but everything has gone perfectly so far and I expect the final setup will be more of the same - perfection!

Even though they kindly let me know they weren't taking new clients this year, Aaron still took the time to ask for our fireplace model number and photos. To my surprise, he actually called and walked us through a few standard troubleshooting steps over the phone! We could see the igniter wire glow red-orange but turn off after a few seconds. He explained that was a good sign -- then suggested we leave it on, and toggle the wall switch as needed to help the system reset. After a few tries, the pilot light finally came on, and then the fireplace kicked in! Aaron explained that when a fireplace hasn't been used in a while, the gas line can fill with air -- you just have to let it run a bit to clear it out. I really appreciate Aaron's kindness, patience, and expertise -- especially even though we weren't official clients.! Thanks to his guidance, our fireplace is working again, and we'll be staying warm all winter. Highly recommend!

He told me…read moreexactly what I needed to do for safety and to protect my house, and different options with transparent pricing based on whether I planned to use the furnace vs just keep the chimney and house safe. He showed me where other people were trying to sell me "fixes" I didn't need. He patiently answered all my questions as an uneducated but curious homeowner comparing multiple quotes. He responded quickly to all texts and calls and was always very kind and generous with his time. The quote for the work I decided to do was similar / less than another company I looked at and Mr Chimney seemed like a far more professional company in terms of communication, presenting options, estimate, etc. Their office seems understaffed (maybe just 1 person working there?), but Erica is super nice and sent the estimate and scheduled the job...best to call her because they must be overwhelmed with email and I didn't get a response to email. The day of the work, the workers came on time, were super nice and explained everything and answered all my questions. They were supposed to do a number of repairs including fix my damper. They unfortunately said the damper couldn't be fixed but they were able to close it and I don't plan to use the fireplace, so they removed the charge whereas other companies might have charged me just for getting it to move enough to close fully or tried to talk me into replacing it. They simply presented the options and their costs and said I could decide later if I decide to use the fireplace. The workers were neat and clean, worked efficiently, and the chimney looks brand new after their repairs. After the work, I was cleaning leaves out of my gutters, and thought I saw some cement dust that had blown into the gutters during the work and was worried it could turn to cement in the rain and clog my gutters. I called Martin and he sent his workers back the next day to clean it up. He told me actually it was not cement dust but some debris from the roof but his team kindly cleaned it out anyway to assuage my concern-- truly old fashioned customer-centered values which is rare in this day and age. I would hire them again for any work and highly recommend them. Thanks, Martin, Erica, and team!!
