If you are impressed by all the good reviews, do yourself a favor and pay attention to the recent low-rated ones. Something seems to have changed. I hired Royal Chimney back in summer to inspect the chimney for a source of a water leak that was happening last winter, and to install a missing spark arrester and a rain cap. I trusted all the good Yelp reviews, and even though it took a while to hear back from them and schedule a visit, while another company was available next day, I gave a family business the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake. Tony inspected the chimney, said everything was okay with the stucco and the flashing, and he couldn't see any cause for leaks other than the missing spark arrester/rain cap. He installed it, said hopefully it should all be okay now. I asked if the mesh was sealed to keep rodents and birds out. He said it was, took my money, and rode off into the sunset. Fast forward to yesterday. It rained, and the leak near the chimney came back. I called and texted Tony, and now a day later still haven't got any response. In the meantime I contacted another company, who came out this morning. They found two issues with the chimney stucco and flashing. The stucco problem is causing the current leak, the flashing issue is not a problem right now but will eventually fail and become a problem. As for Tony's rain cap job, here is what their inspection report says: "There is a chimney cap on top of the chimney, but it does not have a spark arrester. A spark arrester is a requirement of every local code in our area. A brick and mortar chimney cap has been added by Royal Chimney which is just wired to the top of the shroud and is serving no purpose. It does not correct the missing spark arrester issues nor does it prevent any rain entry. An 8" round stainless steel chimney cap/spark arrester and storm collar should be installed." I'm attaching photos of the cap and the wire job. The cap is too small, the mesh doesn't cover the opening and doesn't stop any rats or birds from getting in. In the meantime, my ceiling is still leaking because the wet stucco can't be sealed right now, and a permanent fix is even more work. I had plenty of time to fix everything properly last summer, but all I got from Royal Chimney for my $320 was no diagnosis and a useless chimney cap. What a waste of time and money. read more

They get 5 stars for many reasons. First, Tony replied to my message via Yelp very quickly and with answers, plus his phone number. I gave him a call and explained that we had an issue we needed resolved ASAP! Tony was pleasant, knowledgeable, provided an estimate and was kind enough to schedule me sooner than later. The reason we called was the Spark Arrestor was ripped off the chimney during a recent storm and thrown across the home into the yard. Luckily, no one was hurt and there was no other damage. Steven came to our home to do the repair/replacement and add a damper, if possible. He was also pleasant, knowledgeable and fast! I paid for a cleaning and as a retired arson investigator, I do know what creosote looks like, it appears he does not. He did good on all but the cleaning, just a short 30 minute sweep (plastic brush instead of metal) and vacuum from the bottom that did not even clean the shelf. I am so skeptical about the casual, quick chimney cleaning that was just done at a cost of $200 per chimney (2 chimneys) that I will most likely hire another company to come out and check. In the 30 yrs of owning this house, this was the only service to complete the job in 1 hour-for Both chimneys! He was on my roof for mere minutes and I never saw brushes even come out of his car. Additionally he left my fire screen on my carpet-without even the thought of putting down a cloth to protect. I was left feeling as if I had interrupted his weekend - and he was eager to return to. Ever since moving into our home nearly 13 years ago, we have never used our fireplace. It has been hidden behind a couch for some time and even though a lot of dust and cobweb have built up over the years, we haven't paid any attention to it. A few days ago, however, we detected a foul odor in our house, which we traced to the fireplace. The odor inside was quite unpleasant, and it was clear that something was decomposing somewhere in the chimney or in other parts of the fireplace. Our ash cleanout on the outside of the house is covered by a wooden deck, with a trapdoor panel for access. When we opened it up, the smell was strong and we noticed that the steel door was open. It was clear that some animal - we assumed a rat - and made its way inside and had died. Ick! Well, I wasn't about to stick my hand in there to grab it, so I searched for chimney service companies and found Royal Chimney Service. When the guy showed up, he got straight to work, and discovered that a huge opossum had made its way into the ash trap below the fireplace and had died. :( Double ick! I phoned a couple other contractors and masons and I got a lot of no-shows and very high bids until I contacted Tony @ Royal Chimney. My job consisted of removing the exterior brick and leaveing the inside alone. This was a messy noisy job but Tony approached it with confidence. Which is why I got bad bids from others. They would over bid a job just to cover they fact they did not know what they were doing and afraid of the unknowns that may lurk once the job is started. Updating my review for this company. It seems we were due for a chimney cleaning and inspection. We are also in the process of covering the exterior chimney with travertine stack stone and wanted to ensure the cracks on the fireplace did not indicate the chimney was structurally comprised. I called yesterday 9/12 left a message and Tony returned my call within 5-10 mins. We chatted about what I was looking for and had mentioned I went through them before, and it just so happened that there was a cancellation they had for the next day. I took that appointment. Ron, showed up and he was early which is a nice change from other companies showing up late. Anyhow, he had an awesome attitude, laid back, and really easy to talk to. He gave me some tips on my fireplace, as well as letting me know my fireplace grate was positioned incorrectly and fixed it for me. He also let me know I had my damper open (this has been like that for probably 10months), and he showed me how to visually inspect to make sure it is in fact closed. Anyhow, he cleaned my chimney gave me some tips, went on the roof and pressed on the chimney stack to make sure it had no structural issues and we were done! It was pricey and the owners son in law came and spent less than 10 mins. Did not use his brush to clean up but lied to me saying he did. I know this bec I have a camera that I reviewed later on. He got nervous and wanted to talk his way out with stories. He just vacuumed the lower area and that it. UPDATE: 9/1 It is interesting how I got emails from the owner about being sorry and refunding my money. I thought wow he is really owning up. Later got several emails back and forth to send him the receipt and asking who he can write the check too. All of a sudden I got a personal text on my cell phone asking me to take my review out and that I was lying. He was offering to refund me $180 but I said we paid $160 bec his son in law got so nervous about asking him what he did exactly. The owner tony said it would take 45 mins but it took 10 minutes of just vacuuming the lower part of the fire place. This guy is a CHEAT. I texted him back that he was harassing me and threatening me to take my review down. I got so fed up that I said keep the money even though he said his big concern is 100% customer satisfaction. BE AWARE and watch them. It was not about the refund but being honest and have some integrity. I have all his emails if anyone wants to look at them? If he was nice and apologized and said he would come again and do the job or just making sure this does not happen again, I would of put an update of my review and how he handled it. We had 2 chimneys to be inspected/cleaned (they are gas fires, and both chimneys have covers protecting them, so they are likely fairly clean, but due to a defective gas line, we thought we'd have them cleaned, in case we needed more extensive work), and we also had our dryer duct cleaned out. Took off 1 star only because there was dryer lint tracked throughout the bathroom and ground into the area carpet there, and found our bath towel rolled into a ball and shoved that way back into the rack. I had the pleasure of having Tony and his right-hand man inspect my home this afternoon. The home was built in 1893 and part of the historic district in Palo Alto. As such, the home's exterior elements (including the fireplaces) are to be preserved and maintained to preserve the integrity of the architectural elements. Tony inspected all four fireplaces to provide me with his assessment of the integrity of the fireboxes and flue and his recommendation to ensure these fireplaces that were rebuilt in 1940 do not cause a fire to the rest of the home. I have known Tony for 11 years and first had him rebuild the fire boxes and flu at my previous home that was built in 1928. There were some repairs made prior to my ownership that kept little to no flow of smoke . out out of the flue. After having met a couple chimney experts with some charging nearly $15k for an expensive fan option, Tony provided a cost effective solution at a fraction of the price. He rebuilt the boxes and reworked the flue which solved my problem. Tony is extremely fair in his pricing and his kindness is very transparent to provide the homeowner with his best and highest recommendation. Tony reminds me of my father, a journeyman plumber of 40 years with a genuine desire to not gouge or overcharge based on your zip code.
