I called United Chimney to give me an estimate on some problems with my chimney that were noted in my home inspection after purchasing my home. Andy came out and gave the fireplace and chimney a thorough inspection, pointing out issues along the way and describing what would need to be done to fix it. After the inspection, he sat in his car and did not leave until I had a written estimate with photos via email. The estimate was reasonable and I scheduled the work to be done. Andy's Father, Tony, also a very nice guy, came out to do the work. He lead a 3 person crew over a period of 3 days. At the end of each day, he texted me status updates with photos of the work done. For a short intro: I lived in the Washington DC area in the 70's and worked for an "old-school" German brick and masonry contractor from Hamburg Germany. Our clients owned multi million $$$ homes in the Georgetown section of DC. My point is I have seen excellent workmanship on some pricey properties and have learned to recognize it. I contacted United Chimney Services to take a look at the chimney on my 78 year old house in the Alum Rock area of San Jose. It had started to collapse to the point that the interior facing was showing noticeable cracks, the exterior was also showing signs of aging and collapse. I needed experienced help to to take care of the situation, and I was not disappointed with United Chimney Services. From my initial contact with their estimator, to my later experience with their obviously skilled crew, I never one sensed I was talking to someone not specific in telling me what the problem was and what was the necessary remedy. They presented me with a range of options from the outset and let me choose the ones that worked the best for me. I never felt pressured. These folks showed up on time, worked diligently, and answered any questions I had. They stayed on schedule, and produced a finished product that looked like it had been built yesterday. I recently bought a home with a 99 year old chimney. I originally had an inspection by a "chimney sweep" who told me things would be fine after some minor repair work he did. A couple months later my roofer and structural engineer noticed some "issues" with the chimney. I was referred to Tony from United Chimney by a structural contractor. Ultimately, my chimney was in bad shape. The mortar was totally degraded and there was never a flue liner installed. Tony was very thorough and transparent when giving me options. I climbed a ladder and he took me through every detail. After seeing the problems, the decision was easy, we opted to remove the entire chimney: stack and breast down to the footer. Tony and his crew did a masterful job. They sheared the chimney to protect the interior trim and mantle. The remaining brickwork was repointed, reinforced with steel mesh and parged. I have a two year old child and safety is my primary concern. Tony's work put me at great peace of mind. My general contractor was also impressed with the quality of work. These guys are a multi-generational family of masons. Tony is a craftsman from another earlier era. No B.S. and a straight shooter. He over delivered and exceeded my expectations. We have a boiler that provides heat to a two-unit residential building in San Francisco. To the best of our knowledge, the flue for the boiler was original to the 1920's era building. While preparing to paint the exterior of the building, we noticed that the external sheet metal sleeve that wrapped the terracotta lining of the flue was deteriorating at the joints, and we thought we should investigate further rather than just covering the sleeve with another coat of paint. Based on a previous positive experience repairing our fireplace chimney, we called United Chimney Services for advice about the flue. They discovered that the mortar between the terracotta tiles had been disintegrating overtime due to thermal shock and gas was leaking between the terracotta tiles causing rusting on the metal sleeve. The prudent solution was to replace the flue with a modern vent system. The demo can be a very messy activity, but the United Chimney Services team carefully removed each section of the flue and thoroughly cleaned the work area when finished. With the flue removed they were able to do a more detailed inspection of the attached masonry chimney before starting reconstruction of the new flue system. Of note here - while they were focused on replacing a flue pipe, they were also cognizant that, when finished, the entire venting system needed to meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and performance. The stainless steel flue system recommended by them was installed efficiently and flawlessly. I worked in the ICU/ER for many years and have seen many clients who have had bad falls, so insurance and workers comp is important to me! Tony and his team helped us repair our broken chimney and flashing recently and we're grateful for the work that they've done. They were very professional, courteous, and prompt. Before, during, and after the job we had a lot of questions for Tony and his team and they were able to answer all of them in a timely and satisfactory manner. For context, the chimney stack was visibly broken when we bought our house. Tony and the team patched it up quite nicely over the course of half a day. He also threw in a lot of extra services too like tree-trimming, using muriatic acid for the side chimney to make it look nicer, and grouting the cracks at the bottom of the chimney. He informed us that he was using some really nice rebar (much sturdier than the one we had before). I had been looking for almost two months to try get my chimney repaired and had called roughly 10 different businesses. I could only leave a message at most and if I was able to speak with a person at a particular chimney business, they didn't do mortar repair or tried to sell me what I didn't need. When we purchased our home, we were aware from the home inspection that there was some damage to the chimney that needed to be repaired. After all the rain we had this year, shortly after we moved in, water started coming through into the fireplace! Our chimney had developed cracks in the mortar and we felt that it wouldn't take much of a temblor to cause it to collapse. We recently hired United Chimney to stabilize it. We didn't realize how badly it needed repair and stabilizing due to never having had a cap to prevent rain from coming in. Tony and his crew installed a stainless steel flue liner, filled in the space between liner and chimney walls with rebar and cement, patched up the broken mortar, painted the whole chimney, and installed a spark arrester that covers the chimney top. The finished chimney looks great! The work took two and a half days. Tony took photos, before and after each step of repair and used them to show what had been done. I have now hired Tony and his crew at United Chimney Services twice, which I think speaks clearly how I feel about United Chimney. For the first job, I hired them to remove some broken bricks on my fireplace and then add a few rows on top to bring my mantel into code compliance. The existing brick was rather unique and Tony was able to find a good match an then installed the bricks in time for me to have my remodel inspected and keep the rest of the construction moving on schedule. I later re-hired United Chimney to come back and fix some damage to my firebox that prevented me from using the gas fireplace. My neighbor across the street sent us a photo of our 123 year old brick chimney, which had mostly toppled during the last storm. I would have never known about it otherwise, though fallen bricks were choking the vent to the large old furnace in our attic, which could have been dangerous. United Chimney Services scheduled an inspection quickly. They discovered that the mortar in the entire chimney (which extended down to the floor of my attic) had dissolved over the years into dust. They took down the old collapsing chimney and built a new brick chimney in the attic and up through the roof, put in a new flue system, and also protective flashing to last for the next 100 years! They even inspected my roof and notified my neighbor about storm damage on her roof she would not have known about. They went beyond the call of duty with no extra charge. More importantly, other vendors were recommending alternative damper ideas. was the only one who said they could replace the damper.  Then they scheduled the work date for me, a few weeks out. They arrived on time and got the job done within a few hours. They were professional, taking care to be very clean in our home and cleaning up afterwards. They did a great job with the new damper - high quality craftsmanship. It fits well in the space and has a smooth motion. We moved into our new house knowing from the previous owners that the fireplace and chimney needed some work. I called United Chimney Services and they were available the following week (which is amazing leading up to the holiday season!). Andy came out and did a very thorough inspection, and gave me a written estimate of all the work that needed and should be done. I then called Dee at the office, and was able to schedule the repairs about 3 weeks out. That day, Tony, Harvey and Cedro came to start working. They were very thorough and did amazing work. We had to get the backwall of our fireplace redone (cracked bricks), a new flue, new cement chimney crown (the top of the chimney where the opening is) and a new chimney cap. They got everything done in a day, but had to let the cement crown set for a few days. Came back then, took off the forms, set the cap in place, and painted the inside of our fireplace with black high temp paint. It looks amazing, and you can tell the work is quality.
