We really enjoyed our visit to Calas Cafe. The cafe is located at the back of the African American history museum, which is a perfect location. The creator/host was the first to approach us when we walked back to the cafe, and he was amazing! He is such a great story teller and really gives a great history of African American women and the Calas. The Calases also tasted amazing! As someone who has to eat gluten free, I was so excited to try these. They are amazing when fresh and hot. I highly recommend. I also don't drink coffee, but I tasted my boyfriend's coffee, which was dairy free with dairy free creamer, and it was pretty good. I only wish I ordered some Calas to go and that I had a chance to visit the African American History Museum. I do plan to visit the museum next time I'm in town. I highly recommend the Calas, the coffee and the museum.

I love this spot and the owner. Calas and coffee are ALWAYS perfection. The location directly in the heart of Treme transforms you. Expect a magical experience. Conversation with the locals and tourists is always delightful.

If I were rating atmosphere alone- 3 stars would be generous…read more I am rating product and service because adding "ambiance", would do those who work here and their product a disservice. It takes a while to get your order because of low staffing. That said, when you get it of course it's beautiful and tastes great. Sitting just around the corner from Bourbon St. and the hustle and bustle energy that you walk thorough to get here- walking in was disappointing. It's a large open space with seating- and it's QUIET. No background music. It gives late night diner vibes and honestly, that's too bad. Adding music, upbeat- doesn't have to sound like a club but music and having more energy between staff and customers would greatly improve the experience and I believe, increase business. If there were some Fats Domino or 90s R&B flowing out of speakers and staff were smiling, upbeat, dancing etc. it would give more "legendary" experience verses midnight diner vibe. That alone made me not want to come back. Not everyone wants to drink alcohol so stopping to sit for a well made artistic milkshake is a great option. The energy brings down the vibe and experience. Match the ambiance, service and vibe to your menu and 5 stars all day.

TL;DR - Despite how popular and what a tourist stop this is, you still HAVE to grab your beignets…read moreand coffee here, at least once. You do that, you may be stopping more than once. Longer: So I was a little hesitant to go to CDM, because it's such the tourist stop and the first joint anyone mentions when they say "beignet". But this was our first stop, morning of first day. The beignets are piled in sugar, they are warm, crunchy and crisp on the outside and soft, warm and delicate inside. I gotta tell you, the texture is just a little different than Cafe Beignet, the Four Seasons, and even the other CDM in the park we tried a few days later. To me, this is the best one. Now, as a coffee person, their black coffee is strong, rich, and a good compliment to the real show - the beignets. But I did not pick up on nearly as much chicory in their chicory coffee as, say, Cafe Beignet's version. Also, I have to let you know the other location in the big park serves a non-chicory version (in addition to NOLA chicory) that is head and shoulders the best coffee we had in New Orleans. But this is the joint. As a bonus, it's colorful, has consistently great street musicians, and has lots of walkable sites as you struggle to waddle around after too many beignets. Gotta go!

What can I say that hasn't already been said? I'm not even sure reviews make much of a difference…read morefor a place like this -it's an institution in its own right. Quick, affordable, and delicious pretty much sums it up. We stopped by for the iconic beignets and chicory coffee, and while the beignets were good, I have to admit I enjoyed the chicory coffee even more. No frills, no fuss, just a classic New Orleans experience that delivers exactly what you expect.
