My first time visit today and I am definitely coming back. I had their spartak cake and it was delicious! Layers of chocolate cake and lemon custard cream! It was tasty and NOT sickly sweet like most cakes. They have an excellent assortment of cakes that are delicious, and reasonably priced for all your special events. However, I am docking one star for the service. They employ some very unfriendly teenagers at the cash, and their inhospitable service is a great area of improvement for this business. When you walk into this this type of establishment, you want to be greeted by someone with a smile and a cheerful disposition who is willing to help you. For special treats, we will pick up a variety of slices of cakes, with the nutella cake being my favourite. I was hopeful, as I like to try out and support local businesses. The window displays are lovely and the desserts inside look delicious. However, much like the previous commenter, the cake tasted dry, semi-hard and crumbly, definitely not fresh - or if it was, then the recipe was too dry to start. The buttercream was OK. The cupcake was the same thing, even more dry, actually. The Oreo buttercream had potential. The tiramisu was the best of the three. The flavour was good. Could be stronger in the coffee and liqueur but it was still nice to eat. I feel like the cream (mascarpone cheese?) could be reduced a bit, as there was a lot of it. Service was decent - nothing crazy, but nothing bad, either. I can't say I'll be returning. For the price, I feel like there are many other places in the city to spend my money and enjoy every bite. read more

Tried this place for the first time...we ordered a slice of chocolate hazelnut cake. It was late morning and lots of cake slices were available. Unfortunately when we got home, we realized we were given an end slice (of a rectangular cake) and therefore it was mainly cream and not a lot of cake. Ordered the hazelnut butter cream cake from here a few times and loved it! Decided to take my mom here for coffee and dessert one day. BIG mistake! Cake slices are at least four days old and rock hard stale. Coffee tasted like cigarette ashes in water. Told the person behind the counter that the cake was stale and handed her back the full cup of coffee 1 minute after she served it to me (after tasting it), asking her to throw it out. I didn't get an apology or my money back. Instead, she started to explain to me that this is what butter cream is supposed to taste like and went back to reading her book. If you go here, ask when the cake was made. It will make a huge difference in your cake experience. If service is important to you, you should probably go somewhere else. I've never experienced good service here. read more

I stopped in after seeing the wonderful display. It's a bakery that specializes in wedding cakes and has coffee. I was a bit skeptical as to how the pastries would taste. The icing was okay, but not fantastic. To be honest, store bought icing tastes better. The plastic rings on top are a nice touch for children. Something fun and different. It was a carrot cake, worse cake ever, no taste, no nuts, and a thick cream butter base. 50 dollars for a 7' cake, way to much for the poor quality of the cake. I purchased 2 pieces for cake for $10 - a raspberry and a lemon cheesecake. Both were completely inedible! Neither my husband or myself took more than one bite. They were hard and dry and tasteless. I went back the next day and the girl behind the counter apologized and offered a refund. The owner heard this and came over and proceeded to tell me that it was my fault - that I didn't know what good cake was supposed to taste like. She then proceeded to embarrass my by talking about me in another language to another woman and pointing at me. I walked out with out the $10 refund. It wasn't worth being treated like that. I have tried tried The Cake Smith at least 4 times and have always been disappointed. The first 3 times we tried various cake slices. Every time the cake was dry and stale and the buttercream was mediocre at best regardless of the flavour. It was very evident the cake slices were made many days prior to my purchase. I was looking to purchase a fancy birthday cake and thought I would give the Cake Smith one last try. I purchased a small version of the cake I was considering buying for the birthday party for a taste test. The cake was a chocolate with a layer of chocolate mousse and another layer of raspberry mousse. The cake was decorated with raspberries and blueberries and which did not look fresh. The chocolate cake was dry. The raspberry mousse was white. I thought the sales person gave me the wrong cake, so I called the store. I spoke to the baker who advised the raspberry mousse is flavoured with the same flavouring that is used to make gelato, that is why it wasn't pink and is probably why, I could barely taste any raspberry flavour in the mousse. Also worth noting, when I spoke to the sales person in the store prior to buying the cake, she told me the mousse was a mix of chocolate and raspberry, which seemed odd and was not correct. The Cake Smith should ensure their staff has good product knowledge. Needless to say, I will not be serving a birthday cake from The Cake Smith and I will not be buying anything else from this bakery. read more
