There, I always felt they were fighting a tough battle by clambering for attention amongst a myriad of independent cafes that seemed to be cropping up monthly. Situated, where they are, in Drumcondra, save for a couple of other neighbourhood cafes, they seem to have more of a presence. Located within a sort of cultural centre for the area, the café is small and unassuming. It shares the wider space with various small businesses including a little specialist food shop and it seems the laid back, earthy vibe is consistent throughout the building. I had been in once or twice for a takeaway coffee and liked the no frills layout. The open plan kitchen looks directly out to a small dining room, littered with kitsch tables and chairs. On this occasion, I was sitting down to their appetizing brunch menu. Having done the brunch thing to death around the city, I am always surprised to find new takes on classic dishes. Nelly's don't deviate too much from the norm, but enough to stand out from some of their competition. Both of us opt for the cheesy scrambled eggs on sourdough with bacon and avocado. The simple introduction of the eggs as 'cheesy' may have influenced my mildly hungover choice, but nevertheless, they hit the spot. The eggs were perfect and the bacon and avocado (more of a guacamole) were also delicious. The coffee was somewhat forgettable but the friendly service and relaxed atmosphere made up for that. I would say that in an area somewhat lacking in original brunch-serving cafes, Nellys is most certainly worth a visit.

It's easier to…read morebrowse than either Kitchen Complements or Stock, its south of the Liffey competitors, due to the large floor space. Staff were very friendly and helpful and I was talked through the basics of the business, which are that it's Irish-owned, has several stores throughout the land, and makes all of its own extensive range of icings. I can vouch that the ready to roll one is really easy to use and goes on beautifully - my only issue is that I was advised to get two and a half times the quantity I needed, having asked for enough for a medium Christmas cake. So I have a rather large surplus of sweet white stuff and foresee a year of much cookie and cake decorating for the kids - up to the point I get tired of it and chuck it out no doubt. A word to the wise - the prices here are looking very good indeed, compared to Stock which is on the expensive side. I bought the exact same cookie presentation box here that I bought in Stock a day previously, it was 2.50 in Stock, and 1.85 here. The assistant I spoke to advised that keen pricing is part of the company ethos - and given how expensive confectionery goods can be, you can't argue with that. She also told me they are moving to a bigger premises further along the north quay in the new year - perhaps nearer the Italian Quarter. I'll definitely be making this by first stop for baking stuff in the future.

We had to leave it in the end, and resigned to going another day. To my sheer delight and surprise walking by Crowbar (Button Factory) a second branch of Dolce Sicily has just opened! It's much more spacious and a really comfy cool spot to hang out. The sheer array of cakes and pastries are amazing - they have loads of unusual flavours. I went for the savoury ciabatta with buffalo mozzarella, grilled aubergine, leek omelette (unusual but nice!) and baby spinach. While I did feel the price of €11 for the sandwich was quite steep, you could tell the ingredients were all seriously good quality. It was really gorgeous! You could add soup or a salad for an extra two quid also. I went for their soup which was Roasted Red Pepper & Tomato - really zingy and fresh. We were both pretty stuffed after the massive lunches but decided to go for one of their amazing looking cannolis - WOW. We chose the pistachio cannoli and it was out-of-this-world delicious. Definitely worth a try!
