Spotted this restaurant when walking around the main square of Dublin city, and decided to check it out for dinner. If you are vegetarian or vegan, this is fantastic food at a great price. The folks behind the counter give very generous servings, so honestly the small plate is more than adequate. It's a no-frills place, cafeteria style, rather than a place for table service. There is no set menu, they cook what is fresh, seasonal and available, and in the evening after 7pm, they stop cooking any more food and what's left is what's available. From the dinner items I had, the rice & yellow dal was fantastic, as was the turmeric potato bake. I didn't like the chickpea + spinach dish wax much, but that cause of a personal taste preference for creamed spinach rather than boiled, as was the case with this dish. This place makes me happy in ways not many things do. If you spent any time growing up in a traditional Hindu household in India, you'd totally know that vegetarian food can be just as tasty and filling as meat when prepared well and Govindas goes to prove exactly that. The menu isn't all that complex--they have the usual meal with rice, lentils and a few vegetables and all you have to do is tell them if you want the small, medium, or the large plate. I went for the medium one (pictured below) and trust me, it's so filling, you'd find it difficult to walk back home. What's even cooler about this place is that they have really beautiful artwork all around you'd particularly relate to if you grew up in India. This place is flipping amazing! Like others had mentioned in their reviews, this place is a vegetarian Indian restaurant where, for just a few Euros, you'll leave feeling absolutely full. I opted for the regular plate, but there are also small and large plates. Only get the large plate if you happen to be sharing with somebody else as the regular plate was still quite quite large. I believe that the offerings change daily, so what I had (which included a paneer dish and moussaka) won't necessarily be offered on the day that you go. Our first dinner in Dublin, made wonderful by the huge portions and cheap price. From what I could tell there are a few options in plate size: large (which is a gigantic plate seriously), regular, and small. We were starving so opted for the large plate which was about €15 but totally worth it. They pile the plate high with a bit of all the dishes offered. We ended up with basically a mountain of food! Everything was really delicious. The pasta dish that night was a bit crunchy in spots but I will attribute that to coming here an hour before closing. I really loved the squash and potatoes with the tofu in tomato sauce. Completely vegetarian yet very filling. We were barely able to finish the large plate despite being so hungry. Totally unpretentious delicious vegetarian food at an affordable price. The hare krishna music in the background sets the tone, the servers are friendly hippie types, I KNOW this food is good for me. I can taste the kindness in the cooking. This place saved me while I was working in Dublin for 5 weeks. I get the small plate just about everyday for lunch and always leave full. I zombied my way into Govindas after a very zen meditation experience in the studios above the restaurant. You can always count on Govindas worldwide for cheap, healthy vegetarian options offered in feast-like quantities. Unfortunately my most recent experience was a little below expectations... I ordered samosas. They didn't have any. What?? So instead I opted for a grilled cheese and fried potato dish (tasted good so no drama about the lack of samosas). Then I ordered a homemade lemonade.. they didn't have any. Instead I was offered a very interesting concoction called 'Kombucha'. This is a must try. It's a carbonated herbal tea drink which contains fermented Kombucha cultures, which apparently have a harmonising effect on the body and soul. The label on the drink boasts that Kombucha was discovered during the Qin dynasty (221BC) and has been a part of the Asian Zen philosophy of life ever since. Good thing I tried it. The rest of my Govindas experience floated by in a trance-like state, but I'm not sure whether that can be attributed to the Kombucha potion or the meditation experience. Through my semi-conscious haze I happened to observe an annoying number of fruit flies buzzing around the room (but I think that's more to do with the weather than Govindas' cleanliness standards) and also that a disproportionately large section of the restaurant's clientele was comprised of good-looking males. Ooh! So I guess my Govindas experience could be considered a lesson in Hare Krishna philosophy - go with the flow, accept what comes your way and embrace it wholeheartedly... pity none of those good-looking men came my way ;-) read more

Govindas is a great spot for when you want a cheap & filling vegetarian meal. It's a cafeteria style layout where they have a selection of different dishes every day in a hot counter. All are vegetarian and some are vegan. Your plate size determines your price. You choose either small, medium or large. I always get the small plate which is actually fairly huge!! It costs 6.25 for this size - I'm not sure how much the other sizes are as the small size is all I've ever had. It's more than enough for one person. Once you tell them which size you'd like, you can pick and choose what you want from the hot counter, and they will fill (ie. pile as high as they possibly can!) your plate. Usually I just ask for a little bit of everything, most people tend to do this from what I've seen. The food itself is Indian inspired, really filling and hearty. It's not fancy and doesn't try to be. Total comfort food! This is a brilliant spot particularly for people on a budget/students. read more

You get by with a little help of your friends, not only in college or life but facing a massive plate with steaming, yummy and pure vegetarian food in front of me I wont get by without my friends. I really like the deli set up because you get your food right away and no long waiting during my precious lunch time. It is the perfect vegetarian and reasonably priced spot to get a healthy and tasty lunch near my college. We used to go there weekly during to share a 3 person plate for about 10€ with Indian cheese, different vegetable and up to 4 different small salad sides and left happy and fully stuffed the place. Govindas One of Dublin's best quick eat Veggie cafés Govindas does a great range of Vegetarian & Vegan fare. I haven't tried their entire menu and don't know the names of most of the dishes but it's all good stuff! The daal is always worth a try and they'll generally have a potato dish and another with tofu, naturally. Cold salads are normally included in the price as well. The second of the Govindas chain (not in Burger King kinda way though) is located on Aungier street. The place is a little on the small side but this is a busy part of Dublin so I'm guessing they do a brisk take away trade. I got a small plate and just asked them to put a bit (haha more like a lot- the portion was huge) of everything on it and not one dish was anything less than delicious. It tasted really fresh and included lots of vitamins, protein and carbs. Honestly just such an overload of plant power, I was very happy. The restaurant is nicely furnished and cozy. Vegetarian food in Dublin! I'm sorry, I'm just excited. I'm traveling abroad for a few weeks and will be trying to Yelp as I go - mainly as a way of helping contextualize all the fun I'm having. This place is fairly priced for the huge amount of food you get - and it is a huge amount. I should have gotten a small plate, as I left a good amount of food after eating. I would recommend the small unless you are absolutely famished. Everything had a unique taste and texture - and the plates let you get a taste of different kinds which is good, in case you don't really like one. You can power through and then be done with it. Ambiance is great - it's a nice, airy set-up, so things go pretty well in terms of speaking with someone and generally being in a space. This location is by a lot of hostels in the area - so you will get to have good vegetarian even when you're on the road! read more

I have passed this place so many times and never stopped in! A veggie indian canteen-style restaurant (as in, you take a tray and they slop it onto a plate for you and you pay at the till at the end of the counter)... I got a small plate with rice and veggies (I think it was called subji?) for e5.50 and it was filling and very tasty. Take a tray and tell them what sized plate you want and they'll fill it with as many of the available options as they can. They do soup too (today's was lentil). I love this place and eat here all the time! It is vegan-friendly, which is handy as I am vegan. I usually just order a small plate and ask for everything vegan, plus salads (all for €5.50). It doesn't matter what dishes they serve that day, as I always love it! The staff are very friendly and more than happy to explain all the different dishes, as it can be a bit daunting if you've never eaten here before. Excellent chain of restaurants by the Hare Krishna organisation, that are all over the world. All dishes are so tasty and full of flavour and really great value. There is always a soup of the day and a Dal of the day, which is a lentil dish! Samosa and spring rolls to start, five or six dish choices as well as veggie burgers and salads. One of my favorite quick places to eat when I'm running errands in Dublin 1. The food is fairly cheap, healthy, and all vegetarian! Plus the servers always give nice big portions :) The mis-matched tables and chairs, fliers for local businesses/cooking courses/yoga instruction, and grab your own cutlery all add up for a very casual and homey dining experience. Credit cards are accepted for purchases over 10 euro. Unfortunately none of the entrees are spicy, but that's a small drawback from an otherwise great restaurant! This place got me through the misery of Dublin in November. The windows steamed over in condensation, the gentle atmosphere and the made-with-love vegan curries and pumpkin soups made me feel like I was in my granny's kitchen, nurtured and safe, the perfect antidote to long, dark nights in the city. Their da'al and broccoli coconut curry is fantastic and just before they close they sell off all the day's fare to one euro (1 EURO?!!!). Even at that they still load up your tub to overflow. Govinda's really needs to be commended for their generosity and integrity ( veggies come from their farm in Fermanagh, extra kudos to them). I'm devastated that the yoga classes upstairs have been discontinued as I would hit up the restaurant after each fantastic session but this won't stop me visiting here often. Clean, basic, no frills good Vegetarian food. Had a quick dinner with a work mate last night - I chose the Indian-style Lentil soup - nice balance of lentils, curry spices and fresh coriander. The portion size was more than I could finish, and I didn't even take the piece of crusty white bread offered alongside the soup. Quick and easy dinner for 3 euro - can't beat it! My friend had the "half plate" for 4.50, which consisted of two large scoops of entrees, which he said were delicious. Good food very filling was not a huge fan of the tofu but apart from that great. Very quick eat.

Dependably delicious vegetarian and vegan food, huge portions (anything above a 'small plate' and you'd probably not finish it), cheap as chips, and the staff are always sweet. Your mixed plate gets you a bit of everything: curries, daals, rice, and a rotating daily special, maybe a spiced polenta. Nothing has ever been overly spicy in my experience, but always tasty. Counter service and then you seat yourself, so more of a canteen than a formal sit down place. I go here every time I'm in Dublin, and it never disappoints. Alongside Cornucopia it's my favourite veggie spot in town. They have a few locations too which is convenient. read more
