Eggs Madame
Dara R.

Honestly the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. That's what I'm starting the review with because it's important. The Rest of the food was tasty too. My only mild disappoint was the cornbread, as it was a little dry. Admittedly I only picked this restaurant because of the cool greenhouse concept so I had no expectations. They do not take reservations, which is a bummer, but the town is cute to walk around so we didn't mind the 45 minute wait. It is busy for Sunday brunch and it can get a little loud. Overall the vibe is unique, the food is tasty, and the people are nice. I don't know if this is a regular place for me, but I will be thinking of the eggs for a while. Also, like most places in Philly they charge a credit card fee.

Maaaaan! We had a time here. From the moment we entered we were greeted. We waited about 30-40 minutes, but it was worth it. Our server, Mandy was great! She was attentive. Gave my wife a fresh cup of coffee with our asking. Anyone who knows my wife, knows she likes her coffee. I wish she would talk and eat. Hahahahaaa! People every where. And are friendly... well at least most are of them. Place is inviting which matches the energy of the staff. Come here! You will not be disappointed.

Wow!! Lots to say about cake. 1) The space is incredible. It's so beautifully placed, and they really nail the greenhouse feel. 2) The staff was efficient and served us excellently! We even were impressed by how quickly they were turning out customers. 3) The food is soooo good. They do have a really limited selection, but what they had rocked. My entire group ranked our food a 10/10! Also, it can be BYOB, so keep that in mind.

I love this place! I used to come here often about 10 years ago, and life got a bit busy so I wasn't able to come to Chestnut Hill much. I always loved the huge green house dining area, the service is always friendly and food always good. Their coffee is smooth, balanced and nice. I asked which blend they use and they told me, but I forgot the name but it is from a local roasters. This time we ordered breakfast burrito, garden frittata, and citrus tart. Was very very happy with everything.

Salmon BLT

If you're in town, you definitely have to stop by here! Located in a greenhouse exterior structure, this cafe offers good food, pastries and drinks! We stopped by for brunch on Sunday and luckily were able to snag a table. I got their salmon BLT, so good! Left full, otherwise would've definitely gotten a pastry to go.

Breakfast Burrito (egg scramble, refried beans, queso fresco, pico de gallo, fresh guac, sour cream, flour tortilla, house chili sauce)

A great but small dining space (i.e., what appears to be a repurposed greenhouse with high ceilings). The menu is on the simpler side, but the food is good, and the portions are fair to large. The staff are attentive, and the prices are reasonable for the neighborhood. The breakfast burrito was tasty, and the contrast in temperatures (between the burrito and the items that framed it) and textures (the burrito was softer with the eggs and beans, and the house salad was crisp and cool) was notable. While I didn't order anything from the baked goods display case, the offerings looked delicious. They don't take reservations, so be prepared to wait or plan show up prior to opening. If you do need to be placed on the wait list, there are plenty of things to do in the neighborhood, assuming they're open (I.e., on Sundays, Cake opens at 1000, but most stores open at 1100 or noon). We're looking forward to bringing visitors to Cake in the future.

The greenhouse is a beautiful setting for a breakfast or brunch. Food took a long time, but it was all delicious once it arrived. The frittata was outstanding. Service was friendly and attentive.

Tuna sandwich with chips

Cute spot with decently fast and friendly service. Love the ambient lighting and the greenhouse setting! My husband and I stopped in for Saturday lunch and were able to get a table within 20 minutes, which we spent perusing the bookstore around the corner. Once we sat down, we ordered a tuna sandwich with chips and a beet and citrus arugula salad with a side of grilled chicken. For the quality of the ingredients, portion size, and location, the price was reasonable. But the food itself was just fine. The tuna salad was a bit fishy, and otherwise pretty standard. The beet and citrus "salad" was more of a tower, and it tasted good but I wish they'd given more arugula. The grilled chicken had good flavor but was pretty dry. Still, overall, we enjoyed the meal and ended up finishing with a chocolate peanut butter tart, which was heavy, sweet, and satisfying.

Smoked Salmon BLT and Quiche Special
Esmeralda O.

Arrived for a Saturday lunch, we had just missed the breakfast menu which is what we were craving but the food was still very tasty. The place is adorable, very cute vibes with the restaurant being in a renovated greenhouse with lots of plants everywhere and great lighting. But the place was well conditioned, very comfortable temperature. The food was good. I went with a smoked salmon BLT, which was unique and tasted surprisingly good. I would rather try some other items on the menu. The quiche was the star of the show though. I have had quiches before that are overcooked and gross. This one was cooked to perfection . The egg was light and fluffy and the brie added extra richness and creaminess. The crust was not soggy but firm to bite.

Tip: This place does not take reservation, only walk-in waitlist. We waited about an hour to get a table of four people for our Sunday brunch. So be aware of a long waiting time or get there early. The dining area is much smaller than we expected. People were really nice. Food portion is definitely worth the price! Their Ribeye steak & egg was our fav dish among the four dishes we ordered (breakfast plate, breakfast burrito, French toast). Another thing I really liked from here was their scramble eggs w/ cheese! Burrito was huge but the overall flavor of it was okay. French toast was soft but the portions of cream & berries were very small (mostly just bread & maple syrup). The downside about here were limited options of sweet brunch dishes (only French toast & Belgium waffle) and they only have plain/black coffee option.

Now I could tell you all about how perfectly tasty everything is. From the classic banana puddings (I prefer the caramel version myself,) to the cookies, to the pineapple upside-down mini cakes. Yes, I could tell you that. But I want to speak to something deeper. I want to speak to belonging and community; and to fairness. As a biracial person with a brown sister, I feel the pull to support black and brown businesses. It's not a secret. And sometimes you do it, and sometimes you privately think "Damn. I wanna be supportive but this place is a mess." Then there's Sweet Life. NOT that. FILLED with good product at a great price, delivered by owners and staff who actually give a damn about being loving and supportive to all different types of people. And did I mention the sweets are POPPIN'? And to that statement of fairness. Today I came in to place an order, and when the price came up, for a moment I thought "Damn. That is a lot higher than I remembered, but I am not about to question them. They set the price and that price is what they deserve." So I paid. But then I noticed there was more in my bag that I'd asked for, and that there had been a miscommunication. When I tell you that this miscommunication was corrected with swiftness *AND* a smile. No shade. No drama. Just an "Ooops, oh well, here's your refund on the balance." I know this seems very basic but we all know it isn't. We have all been in that awkward situation where as a customer we have to point out an error, and the vendor turns it into a Shakespearan tragedy. Not Sweet Life. "Oops. Sorry! Fixed. Love you." So, to recap: Stunningly delicious sweets. Prices fair as hell. Communicative, inclusive staff doing the right thing. You need to take those money dollers and haul your ass over here TODAY. Now...where did I put my insulin pen?

They definitely seem consistent, which I really appreciate. I came with a couple of friends on a Saturday afternoon, and wow... this place was packed. Even with the crowd, the staff stayed friendly and worked quickly, so we didn't have to wait too long for our drinks. One thing I still love is the seating. They have giant plushies sitting in the booths, so if you're by yourself, you're not just awkwardly staring at an empty seat across from you. Maybe I'm the only one who appreciates that, but I think it's a cute touch. The matcha here is the real deal. It's bright green, fragrant, and has that rich, earthy flavor with just enough natural bitterness that you know they're using quality matcha. A lot of places advertise matcha, but this one actually delivers. I ordered one of their matcha desserts with ice cream, and it was creamy, refreshing, and let the matcha flavor shine instead of burying it under sugar. My only complaint is that it was pretty warm inside. It was a hot summer day, and I honestly couldn't tell if the air conditioning was running or if it was just fans. Either way, it wasn't very cool inside. Thankfully I had ice cream, so it didn't bother me too much, but it's something to keep in mind if you're stopping by on a really hot day. Overall, another great visit. Friendly staff, consistently high-quality matcha, and a fun atmosphere. If you're a matcha lover, this is still one of my favorite spots in Chinatown.

Update: the rating for this shop is fabricated and inaccurate. Shop manager did reach out, offer refund and a gift card for a second chance. I appreciate that but it comes with a catch. I was asked to remove the 1 star review twice. This is why you don't see the low rating from yelp. The shop leverages yelp to build a highly recommended brand that drives you to their door. I do not intend to return, and there is a need for consumers to review all comments (good and bad) and let them make the right decision for themselves. In case you are not aware, their crepe (~$13) is priced way higher than lady m (~$8) but quality is nowhere near.

Place was nice and bright. Plenty of seating. So many things looked tasty but I got two pain aux raisins, an eclair, a merveilleux, and 4 mini choux pastries (2 for $1). The total came to $24. Pain aux raisin was good but not the best I've ever had. Would have liked them to be slightly thicker and crispier. Plenty of raisins though. Crème pâtissière was fantastic. Eclair was thin and dainty. I got this for my son as a safe bet. I tried a piece and I was so delighted to find it was filled with a chocolate pudding type of filling. The mini choux pastries were an impulse buy. I got enough for everyone in the car ride home to try. Delicious and delicate one bite treat. The merveilleux was a blind buy.
