My wife and I had occasion to be in Lubbock and wanted a good steak. Looked for a locally owned steak restaurant because they take more pride in their quality and customer experience more than a chain restaurant. Cagle's was truly AMAZING! Being from Texas, I know a good quality steak. Our steaks at Cagle's were exceptionally great! Excellent flavor, cooked perfectly with excellent sides! This is one of those steak places where the atmosphere was also fantastic. No one likes to wait for a table, but the live music bar across the walkway made the wait a lot of fun and added to the experience! Overall, if you are in Lubbock or within an hour's drive and want a great steak and experience, Cagle's is where you want to go. EXCELLENT choice! read more

First time. Good atmosphere, I like the style, great service, but the steak experience was a total fiasco. I ordered the 1" ribeye cut, it looked nice but after few bytes in I realized is actually rare in the middle and not medium as I initially ordered. The waitress took it back and she said she will fix it. What they did they threw it back on the grill and brought back. Now the steak was well done, absolute disaster. I told them I can't work with that and the waitress said she will bring another steak. 20 minutes later another stake came and to my surprise I got downgraded to the 10 ounce version from the 16 ounce 1" which I initially ordered. My family was there, I was just embarrassed and just didn't want to fight it. So yeah, that is one good way to lose a customer for life. Mistakes happen but your unwillingness to take responsibility for your mistakes and fix it, speaks volumes of your value system and customer service. I work for money as well and for a $37 steak I expect the right value and service. I will not come back again and take my $$$ somewhere else. read more

We used Cagles Townhouse Room for my daughters wedding in May. The family that owns this restaraunt/venue are great people. They were so accomodating and worked with us planning the menu,decorating and set up. They tolerated our multiple visits and changes and requests. They provided the linens for our Reception and did a great job. We had the ceremony in an outdoor area off of the restaraunt. Their staff set up the outdoor seating and the reception tables. We had our own bartender and food server that helped us a LOT. We had our Rehearsal Dinner in the Northfork Room and had 3x more guests than we planned for. The staff was accomodating and the waitstaff excellent. Our Wedding turned out beautiful and everyone had a great time! I recommend them for events and for an evening out for dinner. For a proclaimed "steak house" the steak was that of your average family cook out. Had notes similar to a Burger King whopper. Whenever I go to a different area in the country I avoid everything commercial that I can get back home and experience what the locals eat. When I got into town for the week I was lucky enough to get a Lyft driver who was born and bred in Lubbock, Texas. I told him I heard there was a good steak place in Amarillo. He told me that place (Big Tex I think??) is nothing but a tourist trap with mediocre food. He told me if I wanted a good steak I needed to go to Cagle's. Two days later, here I am at dinner with my wife and we loved the place. It's a little bit of a drive out of downtown Lubbock but not bad at all and definitely worth it. The restaurant is on a ranch. At first glance, we wondered if we were in the right place. As soon as you drive through the gates you can see the restaurant in the distance. The atmosphere was amazing, the staff was friendly and the food was great. I've attached a picture of the steaks my wife and I got. It was the most tender steak I've ever eaten. I'm pretty sure I could have cut right though it with a butter knife. If I ever find myself in Lubbock again I will make it a point to eat there again. read more

Typical friendly southern hospitality sets off the experience. Definitely go there for the unique environment! It has a very cool Texas-specific ambiance. It is in the middle of a big ranch in which you will have to drive toward where the restaurant is located. The restaurant is remodeled using an old farm house. Such unique environment makes the visits worthwhile! The service was friendly and prompt and we enjoyed the bread served on the table. The food is ok. I ordered ribs and brisket BBQ. Ribs were ok and the brisket was a bit dry. The side potato salad lacked the flavor. My apologies for this super long review. I thought long and hard before deciding to type this out as I never wanted to be that person who leaves a bad review but maybe some criticism will help improve the service and potentially the experience for someone else. The last time I visited this restaurant was 2 years ago but 2 days ago I decided to bring my family to dinner here as I've dined at this establishment many times before (originally in 2017 upon my first visit to Lubbock & multiple times each as the organization I worked for would have multiple interview dinners for candidates each year). My mom and uncle were visiting Lubbock for the very first time and I was super excited to show them this place. Anyways to my most recent visit, which was on a Friday night so I expected and understood if service would slower than usual. We sat down a party of 4 adults, 1 child and 1 baby. The hostess was very pleasant and sat us down as soon as we arrived. Our waitress seemed sweet enough and went to get us our beverages which we got after a few minutes but before we could ask for straws she dashed off. She came back about 5-7 minutes later to take our orders. We gave our orders and finally got some straws and she said would return with some bread & cornbread. The bread arrived shortly after but again before we could get proper silverware and plates she ran off again. We waited about 10 minutes before she came and we got the proper utensils. Fortunately it wasn't long after that before our food arrived so that was good but that lead to another disappointment. All but 1 of us was satisfied with our meals. The brisket was very dry and not flavorful; the chicken fried steak (my personal favorite) was a major letdown as it felt as if I was eating jerky; the grilled chicken was bland and dry; the things that were good were the appetizers, sausages, green beans and mashed potatoes. By this point we were all ready to call an end to night after half the party had a long day traveling and I felt bad and didn't want to be that party that sent everything back. I don't know if she was a new server or was just struggling but I could tell, having worked in a restaurant before, that she had no patience and didn't seem to want to be bothered from the start to the end of encounter. We packed up pretty after getting less than the correct amount of to-go boxes and I still tipped her generously (30%) and left a note wishing her a happy weekend even though it was a rough service encounter. I'm not sure if there's been major changes in the 2 years that I haven't been here but this will probably the last time I dine at this establishment. You have to be in the right state of mind when you come to Cagle's. The other reviewers are right - it's not a 5 star Dallas steakhouse. It's more like an entertainment ranch-style place; there's a big banquet style hall (perfect for receptions, etc.), a live music area and parts other than the restaurant. I've eaten at Cagle's a handful of times and they never let me down. The food is consistently great at Cagle's. Granted, I've only had the steaks - but today, for example, it was cooked PERFECTLY medium rare. Tender and juicy, just like a steak should be. They only offer ribeyes so don't expect a filet choice here, but that's just fine with me as long as it's cooked correctly. They offer four different size steaks depending on your appetite, from a 9 oz version to a giant ribeye, starting at a reasonable $20 for the whole meal. Our poor server, bless her heart. We were here celebrating my brother's college graduation, but she did an AWESOME job making sure our 16 bellies got fed fast. The salads and bread came out extremely fast, and I didn't hear anyone complain about their food. Even the baked potatoes were soft and yummy! The "sides" buffet comes with every steak, which includes pickles, japs, onions, potato salad, cornbread, coleslaw, beans and a bunch of other ridiculously good stuff. And it was all you can eat -- even BETTAH! They also have a good selection of salads, appetizers and barbeque on their menu in case you're not feeling steaky. It may be a little cheesy - but definitely family-friendly. But it's hella popular in Lubbock, so expect a wait (not sure if they take reservations?). read more

Sad to say this...but this landmark is on its way off the Lubbock restaurant map. There was a time that you would have to wait in line for an hour, then got a very good steak at a good value. The place used to hop. Now, they have expanded into spices, and event planning. We walked in on a Saturday night at 7pm and there was no wait, the dining room was 2/3's empty. The quality of meats are not what they were, but the prices are what you would expect from a 4 star white table cloth restaurant in Dallas. We orderd two 1 1/4 inch steaks..that an easy 1/3 was inedible, untrimmed fat, and gristle. (see poor meat quality). The side salads were underwhelming. You have to go to the "bar" to get a bland, flavorless, uninspired collection of potato salad, slaw, and tasteless beans. The cornbread was so dry that it turned to ash and blew away before it got to the table....oh, yeah, and dont forget...you get to go get this yourself. This would all be serviceable...but for 2 steaks, two side salads, and 3 beers..this cost over $100 dollars. I really dont mind paying for great steaks...the cost isnt the issue. The problem is the foisting of the lower quality meats at high prices. Additionally, they slathered one steak in WAY too much of their spice rub and my wifes steak had harldy any. I want to taste the beef, not the spice rub. I hope they get the ship righted, but normally, when a restaurants bottom line starts suffering, they skimp. Sending out fatty gristly steaks at $30 bucks a throw, well it just aint cool. In the mean time, Lubbock has a couple of other places that will get my Steak bucks...you should try and find them too. Omg. What happened? I have been here several times over the years- some good - some average. But, recently was not acceptable. First, the salad had to be the lettuce that peter rabbit refused to eat in mr. mcgregor's garden. The bread was so bad i felt sorry for other breads. I think it was the display from an italian bread basket from martha stewart's prison. A true waste of .02 cents worth of butter like disposable spread. I don't want to insult other cornbread by even discussing the yellow inedible squares. The steak was delivered. Server nice and modestly attentive. Must be low on tea bags- cant get a refill; so i took water from the closest guy with a mystery pitcher. Now cut into the steak. Good seasoning but needed grandad's dentures to chomp the gristle. Tough cow, must of gave a mike tyson worthy fight at the slaughter house to only fall in the 8 th round. I fought him good for 20 minutes and left a pile of gristle and fat that was larger than the steak i started with. The fries were good. Ate those to hold me over til taco villa. Don't know if our server had a bad night or was just tired, but I have run into more pleasant folks at a border check point. Cagle's has a lot of fans and a pretty loyal following. I hate to dump on a Lubbock institution, much less on a business owned by a fellow Red Raider, but I don't see why. I have been there maybe a half dozen times and I find the place to be mediocre. First off, they only sell one cut of steak: the ribeye. That's a good cut to offer, but it would be nice if you had the option of a filet or maybe a strip for those of us who don't like quite so much fat. They usually cook the steaks correctly in terms of doneness. They season them pretty hard, lots of salt. That's ok, I like salt, but it may be too much for some. The sides are standard and nothing to brag about. People go on about the cornbread, but I find it too sweet. I've never had any of the BBQ, so I won't opine. I will probably try it some day. The service can be hit-or-miss. I suspect the servers are mostly Tech students, so the service is either very friendly or kind of drab, depending on finals, hangovers, etc. It is, however, always quick. The place is always very clean, and the décor fits well with the "Texas steakhouse" theme. It can get pretty loud when crowded. Cagle's isn't a "bad" restaurant ...I just think there are better steaks to be had in the city. read more

The appetizer combo plate particularly was really sort of "prefab" and a little greasy. As you enter the property, you can tell that the place has a definite Western feel as you drive by a mockup of Wild West storefronts. This theme continues inside the building with lightly stained wooden eaves, cowhides, portraits of cowboys, and even a longhorn sporting a dashing hat. The hard walls don't do much to dampen the sound, leading to a noisy environment. Our waiter was quite chipper and able, making sure that all our drinks never ran dry throughout the evening. The first thing out after the drinks was a wooden paddle containing a small loaf of bread and a cube of cornbread for each dinner guest. The bread was quite soft and fluffy and in spite of this, it did not crush when cut. The cornbread did not fare as well, crumbling to pieces when we attempted to butter it. Both tasted quite good even though the cornbread was a kind of dry. The bleu cheese side salad came with some assembly required, a healthy does of bleu cheese crumbles and a small cup of ranch over a typical dinner salad. The lettuce wasn't drained properly, so I unfortunately lost about half the salad dressing to the swimming pool at the bottom of the plate. On to the main course, a medium-rare Jake Steak with green beans. The steak was the star of the show (as it should be), red all throughout the middle and well-seasoned. The steak was also very tender, I wasn't even able to cut across the grain of the meat without the steak separating along the grain. The green beans were a bit of a letdown after the steak, being not that flavorful and having a number of woody specimens that required spitting them out. First time back after about 18 months following a bad experience, thought we'd give it another shot... Took the family, a 3/4 steak, Jake steak, kids steak and kids chicken with a couple glasses of iced tea will cost you $80+ yowza The steak is much better than last time but not as good as pre-2015 cagles, they used to have amazing meat you could cut with a fork! They've changed the menu quite a bit and even added a filet, which will make a lot of folks happy. When we parked and walked in, had to double check if they were open - only 2 cars in the parking lot and dining room had 2 guys at a table, that's all. Hostess took a few minutes to come out and seat us. Waiter was super friendly and brought drinks quickly, after the drinks came then some bread came out. One of the bigger bummers is now if you want a salad with your steak it's an additional $4, I used to love a Caesar salad here!... Are times really that hard? All in all, no complaints and a decent experience - but not the old amazing steak, and for the price this can't be a family regular. More so for business dinners or solo dining. read more

First, don't go to the front because thats not how you get in. The entrance is a quarter mile from the restaurant. The property is like a big west Texas ranch. Then, once you're there the dining area is tucked in a corner of the parking lot and it's kinda not the first thing you see. Even the front door is obscured with no directional marking. Or I'm blind. Getting a table and menu was easy enough. We ordered and were offered the 'buffet bar'. This is where the keep the typical sides you get with BBQ such as pickles, onions, relish, cole slaw, potato salad and cornbread. All are available to all customers whether they order BBQ or steak. The slaw was chopped, bagged cabbage, no dressing. The beans were of the generic can variety with no seasoning. I put some A1 on them and they were outstanding. The cornbread was probably made on site.... from a box. I didn't even bother with the potato salad. I added the slaw to my salad for an extra umph. The steaks all come with salad, corn and potato so I don't understand the redundancy of the buffet bar. The steaks were cooked perfectly and were very tender but overly seasoned and salty. Tender steaks cooked just right, and good service makes Cagle Steaks worth the trip! Cagle steaks has been a Lubbock institution for a long time, and has obviously grown with the community. This large complex hosts weddings, conferences, and etc -- it is a real destination on the South Plains. The dining room is huge but not cavernous, a neat trick! It doesn't feel like a barn, even though it is. We ordered several Jake steaks for a large party. Each fork-tender steak was cooked perfectly. A request for one with no steak seasoning was fulfilled win not problem -- in our experience, most other steak places miss that detail. Baked potatoes are perfectly done, and we also enjoyed the home-style mashed potatoes, seasoned well with salt and pepper and studded with chunks of potato. There is not an extensive beer list, which is heavy on the light American lagers and a few light imports. They do have a more varied wine list, with many local wines on offer (as you would expect in this center of Texas viniculture). We had excellent service from obvious professional servers, who were charming and attentive without being bothersome. They know how to serve good food to the masses here. So why not 5 stars? Because they need some acoustical work in the dining room, which was so loud that we could not hear family sitting a few seats away, and because we all came home smelling like we had been in the kitchen for hours. My wife and I went here for a date night. I called ahead to make a reservation, and Mrs. Cagle assisted me. She was extraordinarily helpful and personable over the phone, as well as in person when we arrived. We were seated promptly, and the service from the waiter throughout our visit was perfect. He checked in on us just enough, but was never an annoyance. He even remembered little details about what we had requested that wait staff at a lesser restaurant would have ignored/forgotten. The food was perfect. Weeks later, my wife still talks about how delicious her filet tasted. She says it's the best steak she ever had. I might have to agree. The beans were also about the best I've tasted. We will most definitely be back, unless the Lord comes to take us home first. A+!!! read more
