The menu was very easy to read, and provided enough variety in order to find exactly what you were looking for without needing to compromise on your appetite. The waitress was very friendly and provided her opinion on local favorites without demeaning other options, always a deal breaker for me when places do that, so she gets special love for her taking care of us that night. Once our meals arrived, it was time to dig in. The food was hot, prepared exactly as expected, and in typical Texas fashion there was more than we could expect to eat in a single sitting. At Chopped and Sliced BBQ, you will never leave hungry. Honorable mention to the fried Okra. I became the star of the night as almost everyone at the table couldn't get enough of it. Also, not sure if it was a regular or one-off, but the night we were dining in there was a man playing traditional Americana folk songs on guitar just inside by the entrance. He provided a nice relaxing atmosphere for the night without being too out or overbearing for my ears. I found myself tipping him on more than one occasion for his contributions to the evening.

The sides were good, but not as good as the meat. Mustard-based tater salad was of the mashed rather than chunky variety. Good mustard flavor, but I prefer chunky tater salad. Never had fried cabbage before, but this was very good with lots of bacon in it. I'd definitely order it again. Pleasant although primitive atmosphere at this joint. It's located in an ancient gas station/auto repair building and they haven't done anything to fix it up. But it absolutely fits with the food they serve. BBQ ain't alta cucina and in some ways the more rude the setting, the more appropriate it is. At any rate, they played good music--CCR, Fleetwood Mac, America, Dion and the Belmonts, etc. Bottom line, as long as joints as good as Pitforks and Smokerings and The Shack are open in the Lubbock area, I don't see any reason to be bothering with the lines and lack of seating at Evie Mae's. These are the local joints that are getting my cue money for the foreseeable future.

As I've been fortunate enough to try several restaurants for the first time in the last few months, I wanted to take time to get them all their due. Powell's Country BBQ was a unique experience that you can't really get anywhere else. First, the food was, unfortunately, not my favorite barbecue. It was mesquite-smoked, which is a huge plus to me, but in retrospect, I would have probably ordered the sauce on the side. I do appreciate that the owner does everything himself including make the sauce. The prices were extremely reasonable. What made this place special was the experience. You truly feel like you're eating barbecue prepared by one of your neighbors, and truthfully, that's what you're doing. The modest building was filled with mementos from the owner's fascinating life. There were no other customers, so once he served the food, the owner sat and chatted with us. I rather enjoyed getting to know him, and I loved hearing about all of his experiences. Take cash, as he does not accept cards, but I appreciate that Mr. Powell allowed me to run down the street to an ATM and return with cash. Apparently this is common, and Mr. Powell said he had only had one customer fail to return. If you take advantage of this wonderful gentleman, I have no place in my heart for you. As we walked in, there were 3 staff members: a lady working the register, the older Korean gentleman (the presumed heart of the restaurant), and another cook. Fried chicken takes its time and unlike a chain like Popeyes and KFC who can have legs, breasts, and wings ready at the drop of a hat, Kokio only makes what's needed per order. This means there is a longer wait for the food. As we sat and waited for our food, multiple to-go and presumed DoorDash drivers came in and had a similar wait to us. The time seemed to crawl as we waited, but once the order came out and I took my first bite, all was well. I ordered their Wings Plate which came with 5 wings, fries, and some coleslaw. I upgraded my fries to waffle fries for the vibes and they were worthwhile. For the wings, I got them tossed in the Honey Bee sauce. They were smooth and sweet while having a slight kick.
