If a restaurant is operating off the back of a single man, you know it's going to be some of the best food known to man. Kokio Chicken is an underrated gem in Lubbock. As we walked in, there were 3 staff members: a lady working the register, the older Korean gentleman (the presumed heart of the restaurant), and another cook. Once we placed the order, the 2 men in the back sat up and went to the fryers immediately to lock in. Fried chicken takes its time and unlike a chain like Popeyes and KFC who can have legs, breasts, and wings ready at the drop of a hat, Kokio only makes what's needed per order. This means there is a longer wait for the food. As we sat and waited for our food, multiple to-go and presumed DoorDash drivers came in and had a similar wait to us. The time seemed to crawl as we waited, but once the order came out and I took my first bite, all was well. I ordered their Wings Plate which came with 5 wings, fries, and some coleslaw. I upgraded my fries to waffle fries for the vibes and they were worthwhile. For the wings, I got them tossed in the Honey Bee sauce. They were smooth and sweet while having a slight kick. The crisp on the chicken was insane and had an earth shattering rumble as you took a bite. It's one of those meals you go silent after your first bite and don't say anything until your last. I got take out and it was made fresh and hot. The people here are very nice. I got the waffle fries, half chicken with the hot spicy seasoning, 10 wings, half garlic half buffalo. The wings are the biggest wings ever. 10 is plenty to share for two people. Half chicken order is enough for 3 maybe even 4. The waffle fries were the most bland thing in the world, need some seasonings or even just a pinch of salt. The garlic flavor isn't very good but I enjoyed the buffalo and the hot spicy. Amazing chicken! This is the fried chicken recipe I've always wanted to experience, fried to be super crispy on the outside but still juicy meat inside and that doesn't get soggy. I visited two days in a row to try out several menu items and figure out my fave. The original crispy is the best! I placed my order to go and after transporting to my home, my tenders were still very crispy. A+ for that. The tenders were large so I only ate one and a few waffle fries for lunch. Hours later, I had the rest for my dinner and they were still crispy after sitting in the fridge for several hours. Another A+! First time I went in to try this place, what hit me right was how clean it was! Staff explained how they cooked everything fresh. Young man at the counter suggested what I should order for my wife and I. When I got it home we both were pleased and have gone back many times. I read a review awhile back, about a customer who wrote a very bad review after arriving at closing time. He complained that they had shut down the kitchen and everyone was fixing to leave. I ordered the drumstick plate with a side of fries and salad (coleslaw). Their fountain drink were out, but they did have bottled drinks for purchase. Our food came out and we dug right in. The drumsticks had to be the biggest I have ever seen. I wasn't sure if 3 legs would fill me up but I barely made it through 2. They were fried to perfection with the crispy exterior, but nice and juicy inside. I got the hot crispy flavor which I was told was pretty spicy. Though the chicken was beautifully made, the flavors were lacking. I could faintly taste any flavor and it had a slight heat. My spice tolerance is high, so that may explain that. My son got the crispy strips and he said they were good. Both our fries and waffle fries were your basic run of the mill frozen fries with absolutely no seasoning on them. We also ordered fried dumplings which were very tasty. Overall, this isn't a bad spot by any means. My flavor choices might have been wrong this time around. The veggies in the bowls are basic Normandy mix, not anything Korean or even vaguely oriental. The coleslaw was bland. And the whole thing was expensive! I ordered from Uber Eats so it was even more pricier than in person. Because it was my first time I had no idea what I was ordering. I got 5 legs and an order of 10 wings. The legs were huge and other than the 'Hot Crispy' taste, they didn't taste seasoned at all. Also not as crispy as I was expecting. The wings were 'Extra Spicy' and that was a huge mistake. Not only were they extra spicy, they had regular and black sesame seeds on them. I was also not expecting that. If I had known I would not have gotten that flavor, for both reasons. I spent $17.99 on both orders and would not say they were worth the price. I won't say they were nasty tasting, just none of the flavor other comments had led me to believe. If you are someone who is used to 'very' flavored food throughout its entirety and not just the sauce, then be cautious if you've never tried this place before. During my time at USC in Los Angeles, my friends and I frequented Koreatown's many fried chicken / chimaek places and I've had many fun memories there. That's why it's amazing that there's finally a real Korean fried chicken place in Lubbock. That crispy rice breading is truly something else, and this place does not get the credit it deserves. Even the boneless chicken is phenomenal. Make sure to ask for radishes on the side to soak up the grease from the chicken and fries!! Try the tteokboki too-- in two variations: honey and spicy rice cakes. We need more authentic Korean/Japanese/Chinese places here in Lubbock, and this certainly foots the bill.
