Chai Tea Latte
Dyanna Q.

This used to be called Coffee + Milk which was a really nice coffee bar that served excellent chai tea lattes. I don't know if they changed anything else besides the name... The coffee is still good, and I swear the staff are still the same too. They don't do fancy latte art (at least on my chai tea latte), but who cares about that. They also honored my punch card from Coffee + Milk. The one improvement is the pastries. I don't remember Coffee + Milk having an abundance of food. I tried a fluffy pastry with cheese and bacon, and it was delicious and filling. Since it's across the street from City Hall, it gets packed during the morning and random times of the day as politicos meet "outside the building." There are a few tables and chairs inside but it's worth it to take a stroll around the War Memorial.

Stumbled across this coffee shop on my way to work and decided to pop in to check it out! It's located right near the entrance of the War Memorial. They brew Intelligentsia coffee and have a nice selections of milks (Oatly!!) and pastries (Neighbor Bakehouse!!). The baristas are very friendly. There isn't too much seating, I think maybe 5-6 high stool seats inside and two or three small round tables right outside the cafe (but inside the Memorial). Really lovely cafe and will definitely be back! I also saw a sign that said they have 50% off select pastries and coffee from 2-4pm (I believe they're only open weekdays).

Curry potato turnover. Pass on this.

Tried the curry potato turnover ($4). There was one single thinly sliced potato sliver, yellow curry paste, ricotta (?) cheese. IMO there wasn't enough filling. I didn't really like this. I also bought a guava and cream cheese pastry ($4). This one is pretty good and you must try it. I don't think there was enough guava.

This is supposed to be a latte?! Ugh! I didn't ask for a cappuccino.
SF S.

I asked for a latte not a cap. Make sure to ask for no foam. Which a latte shouldn't have foam..already a given.

How do we find out what the taco rotation is each week? Is it posted online somewhere? I know they have a sign there, but I don't want to walk there just to see what's being offered.

There was a lot of natural light in the coffee shop, definitely a visually-appealing, 'aesthetic' place. I got an iced red tea and it was delicious. The tea was botanical, smooth and fragrant. Amazing experience! Excited to come back and try the coffee and pastries, which looked super fresh.

It seems like there's also an upstairs but did not get the chance to check it out. I got an iced latte with their almond macadamia milk, and they're also so nice to do complimentary cold brew! So we got an extra drink for free. Trying the iced latte, it was pretty disappointing lol. I thought it would be similar to like a Hawaiian style latte with macadamia milk, but it was a lot lighter than I thought. It was definitely very nutty, but it also just tasted like water down latte. Honestly not much going on with the drink, but it does taste lighter in general. Crazy have to pay $1.50 more to add on this milk. Overall, its alright. I do like the natural lighting coming into the shop, but nothing too special.

The amazing food part is mostly because of places like Sōhn and Neighbor Bakehouse. First of all, Sōhn's space is very aesthetically pleasing with so much open space with strong industrial-minimalist elements. Food just made it better. I got their very popular Galbi patty melt and because it was so good, I got another one to go for my husband. And a cup of hot tea. Wow! The Galbi patty melt was so juicy and delicious. I definitely get why they are so popular. The service was friendly as well. When I came in, the staff was friendly and asked if I was eating in or take out and directed me inside. It was very busy with a lot of people, so i opted to sit downstairs in the bar area. Enjoyed my patty melt and people watching. Located on 3rd St and 22nd St.

===TL;DR=== - Iced hojicha latte $5.50…read more- Iced yuja perilla espresso tonic $7 ===TMI=== Came here during their SF Elorea event so thought I try their drinks. Interior is this off white with warm and soft ambient lighting. Downstairs had a cozy couch and high chair hybrid corner to the left with bar seating in the middle and then they have this U shape setup for upstairs seating. Hojicha latte - great price but this did not taste like the hojicha profile I'm familiar with. In other words, I didn't like it. I wouldn't be able to tell this was a hojicha latte if I tasted this blindly. It just tasted very grainy, doesn't have that rich toasty nutty sweetness I'm used to. Tbh, idk what I was drinking at that point. Wouldn't recommend. Yuja perilla espresso tonic - if you need a wake up call, a punch in the face, this is the drink for you. Complex flavor profile. Very zesty citrusy and herby. It kind of softens up as the ice melts so the end was more enjoyable. Really wanted to like this trendy cafe that's all over social media but this time, it didn't deliver for me. Overall, I think I'll just try their coffee series next time. PSA: parking here is like a nightmare. Limited meter parking. I've seen cars just getting meter maid tickets left and right. Recommend to take public transportation or rideshare.

Since Stonemill opens at 10 AM, I arrived around 9:40 AM. Shortly afterwards, a long line started to form behind me. Once inside, my friend and I placed our matcha orders and were seated in a cozy nook by the window. Despite the steady flow of customers throughout the morning, our drinks were brought out in about ten minutes. My matcha latte with oat milk was served in a large ceramic mug, and it was certainly one of the smoothest matcha lattes I've had in SF (where there is no shortage of contenders!). The matcha itself was slightly earthy, and the latte had a hint of sweetness to balance the flavor. I did not order food this time, but I saw several people around us order the Japanese breakfast set and matcha cream pie, which I will have to try on my next visit. Despite the constant line to enter the cafe, the ambiance inside remained relaxed and welcoming, perfect for savoring our matcha.

Getting a pretty basic, straight forward matcha or hojicha beverage is always a good way to tell how a store's quality of matcha is. Of course just a plain matcha like usucha is a better way of telling but I like mine with oat milk. Upon first sip of the matcha latte, I could tell immediately that the matcha quality is of very low grade. It was extremely bitter even with the oat milk which was unfortunate. I sipped on it on my walk home and once I was back, I added more oat milk to the cup. That's how bitter it was! On the other hand, the hojicha latte was quite alright. Nothing to write home about but I didn't have to make my own alterations for that one. I'd come back for a hojicha latte but definitely not for their matcha. I can make it better at home..using a high quality powder.

The chocolate is rich, the pastry is soft yet flakey, and there's a perfect little pinch of salt that really brings the flavor together. I'd also really recommend going to their monthly Loquat at night events with their incredible Sabich sandwiches. Too often, brunch spots are full of pancakes, waffles, and just very sweet things. I personally am a savory eater, and this breakfast was that in spades! Nothing was too sweet and there were interesting flavors, going from the salt/spice on the eggs, to the sourness/acidity of the pink things (looks like pickled radish or onion?) The only reason why I took off one star is that the babkas can be inconsistent. The first time I got the chocolate babka, it was delicious and the salt and sugar seemed evenly distributed. The second time I purchased a chocolate babka, it was so salty it was nearly inedible in many places, but there were other parts of the bread pastry that were tasty and more similar to the first time.
