Dropped by here and had a Neapolitan cake with a cap. Service was okay but the bill was double charged. I was also asked as I was still having the cake whether I wanted the bill. The place was not that busy at the time and I thought just because I was typing on the iPhone for a minute does not mean I am done with my dessert. I thought desserts are meant to savour? Maybe I have lived in the west coast for too long. It's a busy place and lots of people are inside going in and out. If you want to stay for a while I suggest getting it to-go and sit outside, especially on a much warmer fall day in NYC as well as the filming at Onieals just a couple blocks away it's great to do people watching with the blocked off traffic. read more

After a picnic and three hours of karaoke I wanted a happy ending to a fun filled day. A few of us walked around Broome Street where one of us was in need to utilize the facilities, which we stopped by Caffe Roma Pastry. I bought a cannoli as an excuse to use their facilities. The lighting is very poor as it's very dark and errie feeling. The staff is unwelcoming as we were given the most rude scowl looks when ordering our pastry. I also felt ignored and not served properly. Personally, I believe managment and staff are anti-social as they appear to hate serving customers. Been here a few times. The best part about this place is that it's not as crowded as the other "dessert" places in Little Italy. I attribute that to its location on Mulberry and Broome which is really the end of the touristy part of Little Italy. It works for us though because we usually park in Soho, take in the sights, walk down to Chinatown to dinner, and back to our car, thru Little Italy. It's a nice place to sit inside and relax especially on a hot & muggy summer night. Unfortunately, on this night the treats we had were really Meh!. I had the Bailey's Cream gelato with chunks of chocolate. At least that's what the menu said. Truth is, no flavor and barely any chunks of chocolate. Maybe a sliver or too. My friend who had the pistachio gelato also said it lacked taste. I tried it and agreed 100%. The tastiest gelato was my wife's chocolate. Very rich and very creamy. But, unfortunately was icy in parts. Not a good thing. The strangest dessert was the Lew Man's chocolate egg cream. It actually tasted delicious--they seemed to have that recipe down right. Weird thing is that even though the glass was ice cold, the drink itself was lukewarm. Considering that the glass was chilled, they must have been using warm milk and warm seltzer. We asked and couldn't get a straight answer why the drink was not cold. Somehow I doubt they were going for the frozen hot chocolate effect. Despite all this I can still see myself going there again, especially on a very crowded evening, mainly because of convenience, ambiance, and tradition. We needed a coffee and tea break, and when you're in Little Italy, it seems like you have more choices than ever. We got a small table in Caffe Roma and enjoyed our hot drinks. I took a look at their pastries and ordered a small plate of cookies. They tasted delicious and fresh, and added a great treat to our coffee break. By far, I loved the atmosphere above all else. It really reminded me of a neighborhood cafe that had been around for decades. My only complaint was that the music (pop music from the 90s and today) didn't quite fit with the ambiance.. but besides that- all of the staff were extremely friendly and courteous. Yes, it's true- they only take cash... but the atmosphere allows for it. Why would you want a place like this to pay fees on credit card charges? No matter which route you take, stumbling along from Chinatown in the cold always leads you to Caffe Roma ;) On this blistering cold Sunday after the Chinese New Year parade on Mott St. Linda, Nicolette and I piled into Caffe Roma and collapsed onto a corner table recently vacated (as we were surrounded by empty cups and trash). The cakes are great. The limited coffee on offer is old skool. The crowd is a mixture of young locals, regular family groups and me, the informed tourist looking for hot coffee and carbs. Ask the waiter/ess which is the best cake...Can't go wrong here even if it's a bit cramped and service a little slow. I've only visited New York twice, with about four years inbetween. Yet both times I somehow ended up at this cafe. Both times I was with someone who wanted a cannoli. And afterwards, both friends said, "meh." But that's not Caffe Roma's fault. That's just a difference of expectations. I like Caffe Roma because their pastries are made in house, they seem to be a long standing business with regular patrons as well as tourists, and the interior - provided you are near the window - is pleasantly photogenic. Prices seem reasonable, although I have nothing else to compare it to. Service was friendly, even for an obviously bumbling tourist as myself. My bff and I ordered a large chocolate cannoli to share, and I also ordered a small gelato with two flavors (Baileys, Mint Chip). The cannoli was so hard and thick we couldn't cut it with a knife, and the filling just tasted blah. The gelato tasted fine, but more like ice cream than gelato. Came here with a friend of mine who was seeking food. I got a cannoli that was yummy and filling. I felt like my friend was bugging the staff since they were just about to close when we came in and even had to ask for utensils but they were cordial and indulged him so that was cool. Having lived here for 15 years it's really sad to the think that tourists visiting this great city are left to think that this establishment is representative of one of the most fabulous cities in the world. It's after 8pm and still fairly light out for May 2019 and we wanted some pastries and coffee. This place sucks in many levels. The wait person isn't helpful in sitting and greeting us. Only the espresso was amazing. Don't ever order their lattes. Their cream puffs are cold and hard and their Napoleon pastry isn't the jam. Nice place! My family visited Little Italy on a recent New York vacation, and we dropped in Caffe Roma on both occasions. The coffee drinks were superb, as was the pistachio gelato. Ridiculous! So after I placed my order, I sit down to drink a watered down cappuccino with whip cream literally from a can, I glanced over and saw a very small sign that read "cash only". It's 2018, and the very least the employees could do is inform you that this is a cash only establishment prior to you placing an order, or better yet management could splurge for a big sign at the door. Luckily I always have a $20 on me, and was able to cover my bill. That being said, my cappuccino was disappointing in both flavor and amount of coffee. A solid Italian Bakery with a solid cannoli. I prefer the other locations I have reviewed for my cannoli craving. It wasn't bad by any stretch of imagination but didn't really standout. If you are in the area, sure swing by. I got pulled in by the outside decor which has this classic feel to it. Also, the lack of credit card options is ridiculous. This is 2018 and you are a small business in the heart of NYC with tourists everywhere. I understand the appeal of being cash only but I did get annoyed that I had to pay an ATM fee just to get a simple cannoli. Caffe Roma looks like a great cafe, especially to take a break from travels (walking everywhere) and enjoy something sweet and warm. I came in with high expectations and was excited to try their creations. First, when we entered in there were no signs indicating to wait to be seated so we just sat to the closest table we saw. We were not greeted at all just a quick, "excuse me, are you eating in?" I believed we were asked by the owner or the manager, not sure. She told us to sit at another table because she was saving them for a large party of 19. If you were saving these tables a simple sign (nothing fancy) should say that the tables are reserved. As we headed to another table, I looked at their desserts and pastries, they looked pretty good. It was pretty cramped in there though. We were served by a young lady who looked like she didn't want to be there. When ordering the Earl Grey, it has always been served as a prepared drink and sometimes with cream. When I received my drink it was just a cup of hot water with an early grey packet on the. I found it weird. Well the package did say its from Italy. Our waitress forgot my uncle's Italian cheesecake, when reminded of it she said, "oh ok." The Italian cheesecake wasn't bad. Service wasn't great. The ammoretti is my current favorite. The lighting is very dimmed, and it always appears closed, but on closer inspection, you'll find it is opened. You know when you are taken off your random, mildly loose agenda either by getting lost, a destination being closed, or gorgeous or incredibly horrid weather? Your mildly planned course turns into a lesson in wandering. Let's call it Walkabout 101. No, we're a bit more seasoned at this. Walkabout 342: The Art of Seamlessly Changing Course as if You Meant to Do So, Like a Cat. There was rain and the store I'd ventured to was closed, so I (upon realizing I was on the very edge of Little Italy) pretended like I preferred my jeans to be soaked with rain, held my little umbrella closer to me, and searched for desserts. I mean a cup of tea. That's how I serendipitously discovered Caffe Roma Pastry. All three words holding equal weight at that particular moment. I saw people sitting in a window table eating desserts and drinking coffee. They hadn't even bothered to take their rain panchos off. Rude, but it was rather rainy. After deciding that inside, no rain, and recouping my losses with proper sustenance was far less sad than standing in the rain, looking at a closed shop, with umbrella in hand, I entered. The cafe has a European feel. Darkish, old, long counter with lots of treats, and espresso machines and such lining the wall behind the counter. I only got cookies, but they really were amazing. The amaretto cookie and the sesame biscotti were perfect. The amaretto fell somewhere between a crisp cookie and marzipan. Slightly crispy on the outside, slightly soft, gooey, and almondy on the inside. The biscotti was more of a perfectly baked dense cookie coated in sesame seeds. Both were simple and excellent. They held their own, and didn't need all of the extra fancy note work to hide behind. Each were also just the right size and strength to compliment a strong coffee. As I had recently had breakfast, I just grabbed a few cookies for "later" and in true Walkabout 342 fashion, continued on my journey. read more

Ok, I came by with my family in February and it's taken me this long to write a review since I was so upset about this place. First, let me say that the young man behind the counter who took our order was extremely pleasant, and the coffee and pastries were fine. My complaint however is against 3 of their hispanic workers there. And before I get labeled as racist, it's not because they're hispanic because I am also hispanic. The issue is when we paid at the end, we paid with credit card and left a tip on the credit card receipt. But as we were walking out but still inside, they started speaking in spanish very loudly and complaining about how cheap we were and how tacky for us not to leave a tip. How about how tacky THEY were for assuming we didn't tip and assuming we wouldn't understand them. We answered them and told them we didn't appreciat them trying to embarrass us and complained to the young man behind the counter. He was mortified and apologized profusely. We also asked for the manager, but he/she was not present at the time. So if you want to go somewhere nice were you will be treated kindly and with respect, this is not the place to go. read more

I got two macaroons which were stuffed with icing and tasted way off, not bad, but definitely not a macaroon by any means. Little Italy is dead, and this place, like most others there, is a zombie. I don't know who is back in the kitchen, but Nonna has left the building. Knowing that Mulberry street is mostly for tourists, somehow my friends and I, locals all, decided to take a chance on coffee and a cannoli. Lattes were a powder mix made with boiling water - no espresso bean has graced this place since Nonna left. They were not just gross, they were also five bucks. Came in when I was craving a cannoli. The cafe is cute, and it feels like home. My husband and I sat down and they took our orders very quickly. We ordered two cannoli: one chocolate, one traditional. It was really good. The filling includes fruit, which is a first for me. We also order flavored ice cappuccinos: one hazelnut, and one caramel. They were strong and flavorful. I highly recommend this place! read more
