Everything was absolutely delicious! My family and I know about good cakes, and this place really have the most delicious, moist and flavorful cakes and pastries ever. The staff is so helpful and friendly! The place is small but it doesn't matter because everything they sell is delicious! The only down side for me was the fact that they only take cash.

((4.25 stars))…read more new-ish large spacious bakery located right across from Union Square Park on Union Square West. a selection of baked items like pizza, croissants, cakes by the slice, and tarts as well as doughnuts, gelatos, soft drinks, and a coffee + tea menu are all on display from the from the entrance to midway into the interior. the interior has a warm, casual modern vibe to it with some standing tables as well as a few seats. the space is clean, organized, and brightly lit. stopped here a few times to grab a coffee or an iced Americano to go. the coffees that i had were consistent and tasted good, especially since i was on the go and needed a caffeine pick-me-up. last time, i was here--decided to grab a slice of pizza for lunch and eat-in. there are several pies that you can choose from...as this is not a pizzeria...so i don't think that you can add toppings or anything. the slices are warmed up via one of those electric oven gadgets (i think). overall, the pizza was pretty good and better than I expected since this is not a pizza joint. the slice is an NYC-styled pizza slice. the slice: melty cheese, a nice smelling crust, and a decent sauce. the crust was not as crispy as i'd ideally want it and the sauce probably needed a punching up, but again this isn't a pizzeria. the focus at Angelina seems to be the pastries like the croissants, bombolones, cannolis, etc. but there are plenty of savory options as well. what stands at AngelinaBakery to me is the genuine friendliness of the employees. they are pleasant to deal with, making things happen for customers (versus being glued to a phone), and just have good energy behind the smiles and service. hat tip to the employees and whoever did the hiring at this location because this crew of workers understand hospitality without it seeming weird or phony-like. if you are in Union Square and need a casual place, stop by this bakery and enjoy the calories and vibes.

Creperie on Ludlow St came up in my search and we happened to be down that way on Sunday. I'm also a huge ice cream and gelato fan, but husband is lactose intolerant so he prefers non-dairy. Last year we discovered the amazing vegan ice cream at Orchard Grocery, but I wanted the real thing this trip and he apparently hadn't wanted a frozen treat at all so wouldn't do Orchard Grocer for himself and a different place for me. Happy medium? Share a good crêpe! We found it at Crêperie. SO many choices, many similar to ones we loved in France. Extensive selection, but it didn't take long to decide on the apple-walnut-caramel crêpe to share, costing not much more than 2 ice creams. We watched the lone young man as he poured batter onto the round griddle to just the perfect thinness; as he expertly flipped it; as he loaded on plenty of apple compote, plenty of walnuts, and gently squeezed caramel sauce. Then he folded it into a neat rectangle, scooped it into an exactly the same size pan, flipped the whole thing over onto another griddle and left it to heat while he made a crêpe for the person behind us. At exactly the right moment (was he watching the clock? or maybe he's just THAT good!), he flipped it over, slid the crêpe onto a plate, artistically drizzled more caramel sauce on top and then gently shook some powdered sugar over it. Handed me 2 forks and knives and we sat on stools at the counter for our Sunday afternoon treat! Excellent! They have several savory crêpes (in Paris, those were usually buckwheat crêpes called galettes) and many sweet ones. Unfortunately it's more of a takeout place, with just the few stools at a counter inside, and a couple of small tables outside.
